III:阅读(共两节,满分40分)

第一节阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

A

It has long been known the ancient Egyptian rulers, or pharaohs, were buried with great ceremony and lavish treasures that were to be used in the other world.

Unfortunately, until 1922 no remains of any of the pharaohs or their treasures had ever been found. In that year, however, an archaeologist named Howard Carter and his sponsor, Lord

Carnavon, were at last successful. They found the tomb of King Tutankhamen, who was buried 3,200 years ago. King Tut’s tomb was the first fully preserved burial site to be uncovered in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings. The two men found the tomb to contain wonderful treasures. Gold figures and magnificent furniture decorated with gold were found in the myriad of secret rooms and tunnels within the pyramid.

The only disappointment for Howard Carter came when he found that King Tut’s body was nothing but dust. Apparently a mistake had been made when the king’s remains were mummified (使成木乃伊). Carter did, however, find 143 pieces of jewelry within the mummy case, mostly made of gold and precious stones.

Actually, despite all the publicity about the remarkable finds in his tomb, Tutankhamen’s reign (统治时期) as pharaoh was short and relatively uneventful. He died when he was just 18 years old.

There is an interesting story that goes along with King Tut’s tomb. According to legend, a powerful curse was placed in it. This curse was to descend on anyone uncovering Tutankhamen’s burial place. Not very long after the discovery, Lord Carnavon, along with sevcral of the workmen, died suddenly.

When it’s 10:15 in New York, it’s 9:15 in Salt Lake City, and 7:15 in San Francisco – isn’t it? This consistent and orderly time system, based on a grid of time zones, seems so natural that people rarely give it a moment’s thought. So you may find it surprising to learn that prior to the late 1800s each community established its own time –by looking at the sun. When the sun shone directly overhead in Washington, D.C., for example, it was 12:00 noon there; up the road in Philadelphia,

however, it was 12:07, and in Boston it was 12:24. To measure time with absolute accuracy, it is necessary to move the clock about one minute for every twelve miles of distance; so according to “sun time” your pocket watch would be slightly incorrect if you ventured only a few miles down the road.

It was not until the advent of widespread railroad travel that a need arose for regularized time. At one point over 300 local times were honored within the country, making it literally impossible for trains to arrive consistently on time everywhere. As a result, in 1883 the continental, United States was divided into four time longitude. The standardization resulting from this system proved so helpful that in 1884 the International Meridian Conference applied the same procedure to establish time zones around the world. Thus, if it is 11:07 p.m. in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, a little simple research will quickly determine that in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, it is 9:07 A.M. – and not 9:15.

46.This passage is organized as .

A.a personal narrative B.a problem and a solution

C.a spatial (空间的) description D.a persuasive essay

47.Before the 1880s, each town .

A.had its own train station

B.had the same time as towns 20 or more miles away

C.believed that a system of regulating time was needed

D.established its own time by the sun

48.The distance between Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia must be .

A.more than 75 miles B.more than 150 miles

C.more than 200 miles D.more than 300 miles

49.The cause of the regularized time is .

A.International Meridian Conference B.the sun time

C.the widespread railroad travel D.the continental US

50.The time zones around the world were used .

Have you seen the film Star Wars? If you have, you’ll know what an evergy – gun is, and a light – sword too. The gigantic space ship in Star Wars can destroy a whole planet in a second or two, and it does so. Fortunately, it isn’t our planet; it belongs to a distant system, far out in space.

The great empty spaces of the universe are no problem in star Wars. The fighters know how to fold space over, like a sheet of paper, so that very distant stars are brought close together; they call it “hyperspace”. This means, of course, that their ships don’t have to creep along at the speed of light. If they did that, they would take years, even centuries, to reach the battlefield. Hyperspace allows them to travel as “supralight” speed and get there in a couple of hours. It’s good clean fun (健康无害的娱乐) though.

We certainly don’t know all about physics yet, but we do have the work of Albert Einstein. He asked us to believe that nothing could travel faster than light through an empty space – but don’t let that miserable idea spoil the film for you, even though all our observations up to now have shown

that Einstein was dead right – forget it. Sit back and watch those energy – shells blow up the hated enemy. The Star Wars princess is extremely beautiful.

The more we “discover”, the more we must admire Einstein. He knew it all before us – by about 1910 in fact. We observe certain very high speed particles (微粒), and they behave exactly as Einstein predicted they would. We can give them a speed almost equal to light, but they never quite reach light speed. He predicted that a very fast – moving object, as it flashed by a stationary (静止的) observer, would seem to have much greater weight than usual. And that, too, was proved correct.

So far as scientific theory or evidence is concerned, there is no such thing as hyperspace, no such speed as supralight. Space is as we know it, and light speed is the highest possible speed. “But,” say the story – writers, “that’s only true at present. We don’t know all about physics yet. Who knows – who knows if there isn’t another set of facts just waiting to be discovered; another universe perhaps, just round the corner?”

Einstein seems to have been prepared for that too. In his theories he emphasized the word “relative”. Everything – speed, weight, time, etc. – is relative to something else. Nothing, by itself is real or absolute. So it there is another universe somewhere, we shall only know about it relative to ourselves. So far there’s no sign of it. But for the future, well, who knows?

51.What is the purpose of science – fiction stories and films?

A.They point out the way ahead, and scientists are grateful.

B.They encourage us in our searching for the truth.

C.They show us what the future universe will be like.

D.They are written and made to entertain us.

52.If you see Star Wars, what might spoil it for you, according to the passage?

A.Einstien’s theories.

B.The uncomfortable surroundings of the theatre.

C.The ugly actress and actors.

D.The rude audience.

53.The increase in weight that Einstein predicted

A.applies only to big things, like huge space - ships

B.is apparent only to the stationary observer

C.is a real increase

D.remains even after the objective has stopped moving

54.Einstein’s theories emphasized .

A.everything is relative to something else

B.the universe is infinite

C.light speed is the highest possible speed

D.there is another universe somewhere

55.Although Einstein did not observe the behavior of high – speed objects, .

A.his theories predicted they travels at light speed

B.his theories predicted them with great accuracy

C.he knew they would be discovered

D.he predicted them in the year 1910

阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。

Nowadays, the pressures on schools and teachers are often passed on to students and parents. Students are tested more and assigned more homework. In the past 15 years, homework assignments have risen by 51% according to a 2006 study. That is an average of 12 extra hours of homework per week!

Excessive homework often leaves no time for students to have fun or do something for themselves. Many parents spend at least three hours every night going through their children’s homework.

However, the governments’ efforts to cut the homework burden of primary and middle school students have drawn mixed reactions. Ironically, though teachers have been widely criticized for piling on homework, it is sometimes parents who ask for more work for their children! When teachers don’t give homework, some parents will go to the school and complain. They want teachers to assign homework every day as a means of making sure teachers do their job and the children have work to do.

读写任务

Homework or No Homework?

Today, both students and parents are suffering from excessive homework. However, while the government is trying to relieve students’ burden, some parents complain about the small amount of homework and ask for more.

Personally, I don’t think the function of homework can be ignored. Homework is a means for teachers to find out whether or not their students understand the lessons. What’s more, practice makes perfect. The more questions they practice, the less painful they feel during exams. To some extent, minimizing the amount of homework may encourage students to be lazy.

However, excessive homework is harmful. Students cannot enjoy their leisure time which is occupied by countless assignments and sometimes they have to copy homework from each other in order to finish it on time. All work and no play makes John a dull boy. Students should have more time for leisure activities like reading and sports.

On balance, homework is necessary but the amount must not be a burden for students.

2021高考英语七选五+完形填空+语法填空每日一练47

2021高考英语七选五+完形填空+语法填空每日一练46 一、七选五 Even if you don’t know the more complex aspects of index funds, everyone generally knows what it means to be good with money. Spend less than your earn, save for the future, stay out of debt. 36 In fact, when we are talking about money management, we are actually talking about our psychological relationship with money. Fundamentally, our financial problems come from unmet needs. In the case of compulsive overspending, the problem is almost never that a person lacks self-control. 37 If you overspend on clothing, you don’t actually believe you need 1,000 items in your closet. More likely, you are uncomfortable with your body or status. Clothing helped you feel good about yourself in the past. 38 If overspending on restaurants, you are not so lazy that you can’t be bothered to cook a single meal. Rather, you are exhausted from doing things you don’t want to do. You need to give yourself energy in the form of a food high, one that will temporarily mask your unhappiness. The path to true financial health is not to reduce your life to a tight budget, 39 Instead of letting yourself be controlled by uncomfortable impulses, financial health is all about creating a budget that allows you to do what you truly desire in life. If your problem is low self-worth, invest strategically in things that will make you feel worthy. Maybe it’s a few amazing pieces of clothing that are tailored well and last long. Maybe it’s a few sessions of therapy. If your problem is burnout, invest in rest and relaxation. 40 When something shifts within you, something shifts around you. Not the other way around. A.Now, you think you are always one dress away from feeling at peace in your own skin. B.Consider reducing your working hours, or setting aside money for a personal trip. C.However, it’s easier to say than to do. D.but to turn to financial consultants for advice on how to manage your bank account. E.Rather, he usually has an unmet basic need which he is addressing through overspending. F.Money principles are simple; it’s human psychology that’s complex. G.but to take an honest look at your needs and meet them with long-term solutions.
