A visitor came to New York city for a visit. As soon as he went
out of the airport, he began to look for a taxi.
There were many outside, but he asked the drivers one after
another until he finally chose a driver named James and his car.
“How much is it from here to the hotel?” he asked.
“50 dollars.” answered the driver.
“Then how much does it cost for one day-visit around the city?”
again asked the visitor.
“About 100 dollars.” said the driver.
The price was a little higher than others. But the visitor thought
for a moment and he accepted it.
The driver took the visitor to every beautiful corner of the city.
Three days later when the visitor was leaving, the driver asked,
“Where do you come from?” “London.” “Oh, it’s a beautiful old city.
I’ve a sister named Mary, living there. Do you know her?” said the
driver. “Of course, she’s my friend. It was she that asked me to bring
you 300dollars.” Said the visitor with a smile on his face.

“Friend” is indeed a general word and vague(含混)in meaning.
It usually refers to people you know pretty well. But I have a
different view(观点). To my mind friends are neither acquaintances
（熟人in general nor people you make friends with out of the
consideration that they may help you someday, but rather those
towards whom you have a special feeling. You care for and miss each
other when you don’t stay together: you feel comfortable with tacit
understanding(默契) when in each other company. The time spent
together is precious(珍贵) and unforgettable.
The line of friendship can extend(扩大)like snowballing, as each
of your friends has his or her own friends, until it forms a circle of
considerable size. You may take it for granted(想以为当然) that
everyone in the circle is a friend of yours. But that’s an illusion(幻
影)-with the passage of time and smaller. When at last it no longer
exists(存在)the one who still stands by you then will be a friend
indeed. A smile between you and such a friend exchanges more than
words can express(表达).
Friendship needs treasuring. We must make efforts to keep it
always refreshed(给予新的力量)， for without friends one’s life
would be lonely.
