语鹅市安置阳光实验学校第十七组(建议用时:25分钟)阅读理解AThe lights go out—another power failure.“Get the candles,” Mom says, and I do.My younger brother and I search every room to collect the tall candles and votives (烛台) spaced around the house.I hurry from shelf to shelf gathering wax(蜡) sticks in my arms and place them in the living room, a few candles in each corner except for a small red votive. That one I keep.It is the one I will take to the coffee table to use to read.I slide my book, Things Fall Apart, beside the candle holder, determined to finish the last three chapters, but lacking determination. So the book remains closed.A sigh escapes my brother’s lips.“This is boring,” he says.A drop of wax falls on my book.“I know,”I say, but really, I am enjoying the stillness.I like to watch the candle burn and feel that life is simple.I like to look out of the window into an immediate darkness unspoiled by unpleasant light.I love these silent moments when I feel as if I can live the way they lived, the people of the past—the Egyptians, the Pilgrims(朝圣者), the Greeks—anyone who ever lived to see the black color I’m seeing, anyone who lived to see a yellow flame and depended on it.I feel at once with a secret, ancient age.I’m convinced that night, in this disturbed state, is the closest a person can get to experiencing the past. So, what was night really like for them? Night, as we know it now, is a pleasant, loving thing compared to the incomprehensible darkness that covered Earth’s first people.Even its beauty seemed unmatched. What did a farmer’s family do at night? Of course, the darkness must have brought them together, forced them into each other’s company as it has done to us tonight—developed a close relationship in a time of fear and uncertainty.A fire probably burnt brightly in a central room where the family gathered to talk and relax. Night was a time when men and women were liberated from work and socialized. They had no computers or TVs, and had to make do with books, religion, and conversation. At their bedside, they prayed to God, and felt a sense of security that they were out of the darkness and harm’s reach.Nevertheless, to run a risk of going outside was sometimes necessary, and the threat of robbers, wolves, even the ethereal (太空精灵), was present. What emotions did these people feel? Did they witness a deep bright blue cloud across heaven? What would it have been like to feel the night, heavy and damp against my back? Would it have taken me, choked me with its powerful hands, separated me from other people? Or would those have been awful dreams, and dreams only?I imagine a young girl, stepping outside her home and into a desert for some air.A cool, earthy smell would greet her. There’s a sky with millions of stars—far more than a person could see today—and there’s the moon. It’s the largest object in the sky, the midnight sun that shines in the world, the traveler’s torch. It inspires stories of uncertainty, stories of power.I imagine this girl amazed at the moon and stars. If she wanders too far, she needn’t worry, for the stars will lead her back home.Bzzz! The lights return.Everyone cheers and abandons the room, happy that their period of being lonely is over, everyone except me.I pull my candle closer, and stare into the night. The glory is gone; it has been made less bright by street lamps, electric signs, TVs, and all other manners of artificial light. But in those moments, when every light in every house was off, people may have had a taste of the old world. They may finally have touched upon the slight fear, the admiration, and the respect that our ancestors felt for the night.1.We can learn from the passage that the writer thinks the power failure ________.A.allows people to simplify their lifeB.keeps people away from artificial lightsC.brings too much inconvenience to peopleD.gives people a time to taste the old lifestyle2.By saying “This is boring” (Paragraph 2), the writer’s brother most probably means that ________.A.he really dislikes the sudden power failureB.he lacks interesting books to entertain himselfC.the writer’s book is really uninterestingD.it’s dull to see wax fall on the book3.From Paragraph 4, we can learn that the farmers of the past________.A.lived a really simple and boring lifeB.had nothing in common with modern peopleC.didn’t have to work as hard as modern peopleD.might have no choice but to stay indoors at night4.It can be inferred that when they stayed outside at night, the people of the past ________.A.would have awful dreamsB.were sure to lose their wayC.might hold some fear insideD.were faced with no danger at all5.The writer makes up the story of a young girl in order to ________.A.inspire people to explore a desertB.show his love for the beauty of nightC.to inform people of what to do at nightD.provide suggestions for traveling at night6.Why does the writer not feel happy like others when the lights return?A.Because the stars will lose their power.B.Because he’s already been used to candle light.C.Because the candle must be blown off right away.D.Because he’s cut off from his spellbound journey into the past.BBy today’s standards, my mobile phone is pretty rubbish. It’s a Nokia 1616.If that doesn’t mean much to you (it’s not the kind of phone you see advertised on television), all you need to know is that it’s a small, not very heavy device with which you can send and receive telephone calls and text messages. It also has a very handy torch on the top for when you can’t find your keys, or when you drop something on the floor in the cinema.Other than that, my phone doesn’t do much.Well, it has an alarm, and it probably has a calculator and things like that, but it’s nothing compared to a smartphone. Why would I want one of those?I have often been told that the big advantage of having a smartphone is that “you can do everything with them!” But when was the last time you saw someone doing “everything” with a sm artphone? Okay, so they may have an endless list of functions, but generally they are used for checking social networking sites, playing games, and receiving and replying to emails.I’m happy just doing all of those things at home on my laptop. As far as I can tell, the best thing about having a smartphone is that you can be connected to the Internet all the time.Don’t get me wrong,I love the Internet, but I just don’t see the point of constantly being online.I can’t remember the last time I received a Facebook update which was so very urgent that I had to read it as soon as it appeared, and I can’t imagine ever having a job which was so important that I would need to read workrelated emails immediately.I would think that if someone needed me urgently, they would just ring me rather than send an email. And my trusty Nokia can manage that. One of the most peculiar effects of the smartphone is, in my opinion, the newlyfound addiction to maps and navigation(导航) systems. Is there anything more boring than knowing exactly where you are all of the time? How do you get to know an area if you don’t getlost there a few times? And if you are dependant on online maps, what happens to those great places you find just by chance? You can’t exactly find out from google map s the journey from “here” to “that hidden cafe with the tastylooking cakes”, or to “that pond next to the church which looks really pretty in the evening sun”. It is, of course, true that we all occasionally need to be pointed in the right direction, but I find that there are often real life humans you can ask. There are many benefits of having a very basic mobile phone, like the fact that it costs me about twenty pounds, and that I don’t have to worry too much about it being stolen. But the main benefit has to be the fact that it provides me with the world’s greatest excuse for my bad habits.Whether it’s turning up late to events, or getting lost on a trip, or missing buses or trains, or forgetting about an appointment at work, I’m pretty sure I’m covered with the following explanation:“I’m really sorry.I don’t have a smartphone.”7.The writer uses his Nokia 1616 mainly to ________.A.play online gamesB.do calculating workC.check social network sitesD.make calls and text messages8.It can be inferred from the above passage that ________.A.workrelated emails should be answered immediatelyB.a laptop and a smartphone share many functionsC.smartphones should always be connected to the netD.a Facebook update is usually very important9.According to the passage, if you use navigation systems, you may ________.A.miss some really wonderful placesB.find a boring trip actually excitingC.be persuaded to eat in a certain cafeD.be misled to a totally wrong place10.To the writer, one benefit of having a basic mobile phone is that ________.A.it can remind him of important appointmentsB.it can often be found back after it is stolenC.it can be used as an excuse for his bad habitsD.it can save him the trouble of catching trains11.The writer’s purpose for writing this article is to ________.A.explain why he doesn’t want a smartphoneB.warn readers of the risks of using smartphonesC.complain about the troubles caused by smartphonesD.inform readers of the latest development of mobile phones阅读理解A1.解析:选D。

be causing hearing loss in many people. Some experts say people may be playing them too loud and for too long. And experts say sound levels on these devices need to be set lower.[2]Researchers did a study with three hundred high school students and one thousand adults. They were asked about their use of portable music devices.Forty percent of the students and adults said they set the sound levels high on their players. But students were twice more likely to play the music at a very loud volume.More than half of the students said they would not probably limit listening time.[3]The study found that more than half of the students and less than forty percent of the adults had at least one kind of hearing loss. Some reported difficulty hearing parts of a discussion between two people.Others said they had to raise the volume on a television or radio to hear it better. And,some experienced ringing in their ears or other noises.[4]Hearing experts say part of the problem is the listening equipment people are using._They say larger earphones that cover the whole ear areprobably safer than smaller earphones that come with most music players.Hearing loss may not be obvious for years, however, once it happens, there is little chance of curing.About thirty million Americans have some hearing loss. One third of them lost their hearing as a result of loud noises.[5]The American pain affects one in three British adults, costs the country over £5 billion every year and is extremely difficult to treat.[2] But now Britain's National Health Service (NHS) will be offeringa new solution: acupuncture (针灸).The ancient Chinese needle treatmenthas been around in the UK for many years, but this is the first time it has been officially supported.[3] Traditionally, doctors in the UK have advised back pain sufferers to stay active,do stretching exercises and take painkillers when necessary. In more serious cases some people are given Xray treatment or injections.[4] The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE),however, say there is evidence that acupuncture may __________ than expensive Xrays or injections,so patients who have been suffering for over six weeks should be given a choice. As an alternative to acupuncture, patients will be able to opt for either a course of spinal manipulation (脊椎推拿),or a series of special exercise sessions.[5] In the UK,acupuncture is classed as a complementary treatment, which is the term given to a medical procedure which hasn't gone through the strict trials by which scientists prove some treatments work.[6] While many experts have welcomed the move to make acupuncture available on the NHS,some are still sceptical about its effectiveness.Research from the US earlier this month found that simulated acupuncture using toothpicks which do not make a hole in the skin could be as good as using real needles. So while some are yet to be convinced, back pain sufferers will be hoping that acupuncture helps get them feeling We were hot, sticky, and mad that the fish refused to try our night crawlers.Being only seven years old, I observed that perhaps the worms were the problem. Maybe the night crawlers only moved at night, and now they were just lying still there. Dad ignored my guessing. We began to pack up to leave. As we headed back to our truck, we heard tires roaring in the distance. Getting into our truck was tough. Having sat in the boiling sun for six hours, I found the seats were burning.I shifted from side to side in the seat so as not to cook my bottom. While driving out we sawa truck stuck in the mud. That explained the sound of roaring tires we’d heard.Being a nice guy, my dad helped pull the man from the mud. In return, this fellow gave Dad some fish for being a Good Samaritan. As Dad climbed back into our truck with a brown bag full of fish, we waved goodbye to our newfound friend. On the drive home, we agreed to take in the fish as if we had caught them. We were sure there was no way for Mom to know the difference. It was just a little white lie.We arrived home hot and sweaty, and went to shower while Mom prepared the fish. After showering, Dad and I met in the hall and sat down to enjoy freshly fried fish. We started eating happily and went on talking about how delicious the fish tasted. As we got up to do the dishes, Mom cleared her throat. “I just have one question for you two great fishermen,” she said. We looked at her expectantly, thinking we had another opportunity to delight her with our great fishing ability. Forests that absorb carbon dioxide are cut down for raising animals while fertilisers used for growing their feed are rich in nitrogen, which can contribute to air and water pollution, climate change and ozone depletion. Livestock also produces large quantities of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas.A Dutch city will become the first in the world to ban meat advertisements from public spaces in an effort to reduce consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.Haarlem, which lies to the west of Amsterdam and has a population of about 160,000, will pass the prohibition from 2024 after meat was added to a list of products thought to contribute to the climate crisis. Ads will not be allowed on Haarlem’s buses, shelters and screens in public spaces, prompting the complaint from the meat sector that local authority is “going too far in telling people what’s best for them”.Ziggy Klazes, who drafted the proposal banning meat advertising, said she had not known the city would be the world’s first to enforce such a policy when she proposed it. She told a radio channel: “We do not prohibit what people are baking and roasting in their own kitchen; if people wanted to continue eating meat, fine... We can’t tell people there’s a climate crisis and encourage them to buy products that are part of the cause.”The ban also covers holiday flights, fossil fuels and cars that run on fossil fuels. The ban is delayed until 2024 due to existing contracts with companies that sell the products. Research suggests that to meet the EU target of net zero emissions by 2050, meat consumption must be reduced to 24kg per person per year, compared with the current average of 82kg.4. Why does Haarlem intend to ban meat advertisements?A. To take the lead in cutting emission.B. To switch food to plant-based food.C. To stop advocating eating meat publicly.D. To contribute to the climate crisis.5. What does the phrase underlined in paragraph 3 probably mean?A. The government have taken too much control of people.B. The local authority is wrong about the best meat.C. Meat sector complains for harming their interests.D. Climate crisis has gone too far to be left untreated.6. What is Ziggy Klazes’s attitude to eating meat?A. Uncaring.B. Opposing.C. Guilty.D. Understanding.7. What can be inferred about the ban?A. It won’t benefits the EU market.B. It has a long way to go.C. It is a short-sighted decision.D. It can hardly meet the target.【七选五】(2022·浙江A9协作体联考)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Federal Hocking High School in Stewart, Ohio, draws its 360 students from a 270-square-mile rural area of the state’s southeast corner. In the early 1990s, teachers and students were not at all motivated. The school, says social studies teacher Deborah Burk, was sticking to the 19th-century concept of dividing the day into 42-minute periods (still common in many schools across the country), with each period counted as a credit toward graduation. Back then, Burk says, students focused more on the clock than on what she was saying. They weren’t entirely to blame. The system, she felt, didn’t let her do much beyond repeating the same lectures over and over: Ther e wasn’t time to challenge students to research into details. “You couldn’t analyze their progress -- or even think about it.”In 1992, Dr. George H. Wood, an Ohio University education professor who’d never run a high school, was named principal. He asked students for their ideas, organized visits to programs around the country, and met frequently with staff. The result: Time passed quickly. With s ome arm-twisting of superintendents and state lawmakers, Federal Hocking moved from the tiresome credit system to a less-is-more schedule tied to four 80-minute classes.“We decided,” Wood says, “to teach fewer things better.” In American history, for example, the emphasis changed from devoting equal time to every era to focusing on big events. The school developed its own credit syste m based on important studies but added other requirements -- a senior portfolio, and a yearlong project created by the students that’s not always linked directly to their coursew ork. Project topics range from writing a world-foods cookbook to the restoration of an old tractor. Graduation based just on racking up a set number of credits was no longer possible.Other changes followed. The seven-minute daily homeroom period -- basically an attendance call -- was replaced by an hour-long advisory meeting every Wednesday morning. Each teacher advises the same 14 or 15 kids through high school. Wood, meanwhile, never lowered his strictacademic standards. “Everybody here reads Shakespeare, Emerson and Thoreau,” he says, “even kids who ar e going to be mechanics.”Teacher Tim Arnold says the schedule changes had an effect similar to the flipping(弹开)of a switch: “The pressure was released. Instead of looking at the clock, we could look at the students. On the first day we all went ‘Wow! That was cool.’”Between the 1995-96 and 2003-04 school years, the percentage of the school’s ninth-graders that passed Ohio’s math proficiency test rose from 50 percent to 85 percent. Passing grades in reading shot from 69 percent to 96 percent. And honors diplomas jumped from 8 percent to 20 percent. “We don’t focus on test scores,” Wood says, “but it’s clear that if you pay attention to the overall culture of the school, the test scores will rise.”Proble ms of the school in the past The 1 of the day into 42-minute periods2 the same teaching content again and againNo time to challenge students to 3 out research into details4 of solving the problems A schedule of four 80-minute classesTeaching fewer things betterCr edit system based on important studies in 5 to other requirementsAn hour-long meeting every Wednesday morning to give 67 up the high and strict academic standardsSigns of 89 percent more ninth-graders passed Ohio’s math proficiency test.Much 10 was made in passing grades in reading.Honors diplomas increased from 8 percent to 20 percent.1. division2. Though a few __1__ of our life like birth, marriage or death are controlled by destiny, when it comes to hard times, we can change some things by our __2__ . Even when passing through the roughest period of our life, we can change it by hard work. No good deed goes without being __3__ and we do have the power of changing the fortunes. 专题限时集训(十七) 细节理解题(二)A(2016·镇江第一学期期中考试)In 1693 the philosopher John Locke warned that children should not be given too much “unhealt hy fruit” to eat.Three centuries later, misguided ideas about child -raising are still popular. Many parents fear that their children will die unless ceaselessly watched. In America the law can be equally paranoid (偏执的).In South Carolina this month Debra Harrell was jailed for letting her 9-year-old daughter play in a park unsupervised(无人监督的).Her severe punishment reflects the rich world's worry about parenting.By most objective measures, modern parents are far more conscientious (认真的) than previous generations.Dads are more hands-on than their fathers were, and working mothers spend more time nurturing their children than the housewives of the 1960s did. However, there are two problems in this picture, connected to class. One is at the lower end.Even if poor parents spend more time with their children than they once did, they spend less than rich parents do.America is a laggard here: its government spends abundantly on school-age kids but much less than other rich countries on the first two or three years of life.If America did more to help poor parents with young children,it would have huge returns. The second one, occurs at the other end of the income scale, and may even apply to otherwise rational (理性的) Economist readers: well-educated,rich parents try to do too much.Safety is part of it—they fear that if they are not constantly watching, their children may break their necks, which is the least rational. Despite the impression you get from watching crime dramas, children in rich countries are safe,so long as they look both ways before crossing the road. The other popular parental fear—that your children might not get into an Ivy League college—is more rational. Academic success matters more than ever before. But beyond a certain point, parenting makes less difference than many parents imagine.Studies in Minnesota and Sweden, for example, found that identical twins grew up equally intelligent whether they were raised together or apart.A study in Colorado found that children adopted and raised by brainy parents ended up no brainier than those adopted by average parents. This doesn't mean that parenting is irrelevant. The families who adopt childrenare carefully screened,so they tend to be warm, capable and middle-class.But the twin and adoption studies indicate that any child given a loving home and adequate stimulation is likely to fulfill her potential.Put another way,better-off parents can afford to relax a bit.And if you are less stressed, your children will appreciate it,even if you still make them eat their fruit and vegetables.本文主要指出了一些错误的育儿观念,劝说那些紧张的父母学会放松——你的孩子没事的,要多给孩子一点自由。

Lee, a secondgrade teacher at Belle Terre Elementary School, was named Flagler County’s Teacher of the Year in 2011. “I was in such a great group of excellent teachers and I was just shocked.” Lee said in an interview after the announcement. One day at lunch time, I was getting ready to eat my tuna fish(金枪鱼)sandwich and suddenly Mrs. Amatuli asked me if she could buy my sandwich from me. She explained that I could use the money to buy a hot lunch from the cafeteria. I was thrilled. I never bought my lunch at the cafeteria. It was too expensive for my family, and I always carried my lunch and brought the bag back home to use again the next day. My sandwiches were either bologna(大香肠)or tuna fish. It rarely varied beyond that. You can understand my delight when I had the opportunity to buy a hot lunch. When we finished lunch that day. Mrs. Amatuli took me aside and said she wanted to explain why she had bought my sandwich. You see, she was Catholic and she told me that Catholics didn’t eat red meat on Fridays—they ate fish on Fridays. Oh,I couldn’t wait to get home and tell my mama that from now on I wanted tuna fish on Fridays. After my mama understood why, she gladly fixed tuna fish for me on Fridays.
