Task 4The professor talks about logical consequences which means teachers use logical consequences to link students’ wrong behavior with its negative consequences to correct it.In the example, when the professor was teaching little kids, sometimes he would let them use pens to paint. A girl called Mary would paint on the desk and damage the facilities. He first punished her by not allowing her to play outside with other kids, but it didn’t work. Mary painted on the desk again. This time the professor warned her that if she didn’t stop the behavior, he would not let her paint next time.

2014年6月15日新托福阅读预测2014年5月24日和25日两场托福阅读真题回忆重点套题:阅读五星重点★★★★★P1R1:British colonial products in regulation act brought R2:soil compositionR3:Mesoamerican art and architecture词汇:exceedingly 非常;极端地(= extremely)hasten 加快;促进(= speed up; accelerate)bulk 大量(= mass)contribute 捐助;添加(= give; add to)enormous 巨大的;极大的(= huge; immense)embody 使具体化;代表(= incarnate; incorporate; represent)swift 迅速的(= fast; ready)P2R1:深海生物研究说有个欧洲人上了一艘爱琴海aegean sea research ship船,经常穿梭于两个海域之间,他做了一个极长无比的网子从海上捞鱼,根据他多年的经验,根据捞起来的鱼的种类判断,海里的动物分为8层渔网来捕捞海底的生物。

2015年2⽉1⽇托福真题:⼝语(新东⽅版) Task 1 Which of the following activities would you like to do on a weekend afternoon? Doing exercise, watching TV, or spending some time with families. Task 2 Do you agree or disagree with the statement that young people should learn how to draw and paint. Task 3 The school is going to offer theatre majors an off-campus field trip to see some real play performances in order to help students better understand what they learned at school, and the students will need to pay $35 for the trip. The man agrees with this plan. First, he thinks students can’t understand the plays only by reading the book. Seeing real plays will deepen their understanding. Second, $35 is worth paying because they’ll be able to see three plays. Plus the school will pay for the transportation. Task 4 The professor talks about ecosystem resilience. For example, coral reefs live in the Pacific Ocean where a kind of fish is extinct because of the pollution. This kind of fish used to feel on algae, so now the amount of algae increased enormously, covering the space where the reefs lived. But then other fish also feed on algae, and because of the increased amount of algae, the population of those fish also increased. Soon enough, the amount of algae decreased, which led to the increase in the coral reefs’ population. Task 5 The woman’s problem is that someone is supposed to come to her apartment and install the internet connection, but she waited the whole afternoon and the guy didn’t show up. She has to reschedule the installation to tomorrow, but she has a movie to see then and needs the internet to do research for her assignment tomorrow afternoon. Solution 1: She can ask her roommate to wait for the guy. She can then go see the movie, but her roommate plans to study tomorrow. Although her roommate can cancel the plan, she will feel guilty. Solution 2: She can cancel the movie plan, but she doesn’t want to lose the opportunity to hang out with her friend. Task 6 The professor talks about two reasons why ancient people observed stars. The first is agriculture. Some stars only appeared at certain time of the year, so their appearance could help farmers predict when to plow. Like ancient Egyptians decided when to plow when they saw a star which only appeared in summer. The second is navigation. For example, Vikings used the locations of certain stars to determine the direction when they were sailing.

The principal difference between urban growth in Europe and in the North American colonies was the slow evolution of cities in the former and their rapid growth in the latter. In Europe they grew over a period of centuries from town economies to their present urban structure. In North America, they started as wilderness communities and developed to mature urbanism in little more than a century. In the early colonial days in North America, small cities sprang up along the Atlantic Coastline, mostly in what are now New England and Middle Atlantic states in the United States and in the lower Saint Lawrence valley in Canada. This was natural because these areas were nearest to England and France, particularly England, from which most capital goods (assets such as equipment) and many consumer goods were imported. Merchandising establishments were, accordingly, advantageously located in port cities from which goods could be readily distributed to interior settlements. Here, too, were the favored locations for processing raw materials prior to export. Boston, Philadelphia, New York, Montreal, and other cities flourished, and, as the colonies grew, these cities increased in importance. This was less true in the colonial South, where life centered around large farms, known as plantations, rather than around towns, as was the case in the areas further north along theAtlantic coastline. The local isolation and the economic self-sufficiency of the plantations were antagonistic to the development of the towns. The plantations maintained their independence because they were located on navigable streams and each had a wharf accessible to the small shipping of that day. In fact, one of the strongest factors in the selection of plantation land was the desire to have its front on a water highway. When the United States became an independent nation in 1776, it did not have a single city as large as 50,000 inhabitants, but by 1820 it had a city of more than 10,000 people, and by 1880 it had recorded a city of over one million. It was not until after 1823, after the mechanization of the spinning had weaving industries, that cities started drawing young people away from farms. Such migration was particularly rapid following the Civil War (1861-1865).1. What does the passage mainly discuss?(A) Factors that slowed the growth of cities in Europe.(B) The evolution of cities in North America(C) Trade between North American and European cities(D) The effects of the United Sates' independence on urban growth in New England.2. The word "they" in line 4 refers to(A) North American colonies(B) cities(C) centuries(D) town economies3. The passage compares early European and North American cities on the basis of which of the following?(A) Their economic success(B) The type of merchandise they exported(C) Their ability to distribute goods to interior settlements(D) The pace of their development4. The word "accordingly因此" in line 11 is closest in meaning to(A) as usual(B) in contrast(C) to some degree(D) for that reason5. According to the passage , early colonial cities were established along the Atlantic coastline of North America due to(A) an abundance of natural resources(B) financial support from colonial governments(C) proximity to parts of Europe(D) a favorable climate6. The passage indicates that during colonial times, the Atlantic coastline cities prepared which of the following for shipment to Europe?(A) Manufacturing equipment(B) Capital goods(C) Consumer goods(D) Raw materials7. According to the passage , all of the following aspects of the plantation system influenced the growth of southern cities EXCEPT the(A) location of the plantations(B) access of plantation owners to shipping(C) relationships between plantation residents and city residents(D) economic self-sufficiency of the plantations8. It can be inferred from the passage that, in comparisonwith northern cities, most southern cities were(A) more prosperous(B) smaller(C) less economically self-sufficient(D) tied less closely to England than to France9. The word "recorded" in line 26 is closest in meaning to(A) imagined(B) discovered(C) documented 记录(D) planned10. The word "drawing拉" in line 28 is closest in meaning to(A) attracting(B) employing(C) instructing(D) representing11.
3. Reading ComprehensionSections Three:Reading ComprehensionRemoving DamsP1: In the last century, many of the dams in the United States were built for water diversion, agriculture, factory watermills, and other purposes that allowed farming on lands that would otherwise be too dry, with low-cost hydroelectric power generation being a very significant side benefit. Building these dams was rather labor-intensive, which created jobs for workers and stimulated regional economic development. But those opposed to large dams can marshal a sobering array of criticisms based on those already built, which have provided some benefits but have without exception destroyed river environments and the human communities that depend on them.P2: Many, perhaps most, of the more than 90,000 dams in the country are now obsolete, expensive, and unsafe, and were built with no consideration of the environmental costs. As operating licenses come up for renewal in 1999, habitat restoration to original stream flows will be among the options considered. As these dams age and decay, they can also become public safety hazards, presenting a failure risk and a dangerous nuisance. Worse still, with the growth of the American population, more people are moving into risky areas. Dams that once could have failed without major repercussions are now upstream of cities and development. In 1998, the Army Corps announced that it would no longer be building large dams. In the few remaining sites where dams might be built, public opposition is so great that getting approval for projects is unlikely.P3: For many years, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service had advocated the removal of the Edwards Dam, which was built in 1837 on the Kennebec River in Augusta, Maine, to ease navigation and generate electricity. The Kennebec River was once home to all ten species of migratory fish native to Maine, along with several thriving commercial fisheries. Damming the river not only transformed the natural landscape, but it also prevented migration of salmon, shad, sturgeon, and other fish species up the river. In 1999, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) refused the renewal of the dam license due to excessive negative environmental impact, and the dam was removed, freeing a 17-mile stretch of the Kennebec River that had been submerged for 162 years. P4: The cost of keeping outdated hydroelectric equipment running decades after it was installed or upgrading dam safety systems may not be worth it. This was proven true on the Elwha River in the Olympic National Park in Washington when an extraordinarily rich salmon habitat was being disrupted by an outdated hydroelectric plant. Before dams were built on the Elwha River, 400,000 salmon returned each year to spawn, but that number dropped to fewer than 3,000 after dams were put up. Once the hydroelectric power generating capacities of the dams had outlived their useful lives, the importance of this salmon habitat necessitated the removal of the dams on the Elwha River. Simply removing the dams will not restore the salmon, however.Where 50-kilogram king salmon once fought their way up waterfalls to lay their eggs in gravel beds, there are now only concrete walls holding back still water and deep beds of muddy deposits.P5: When the negative environmental effects outweigh the benefits, a dam may be considered for removal. The Hetch Hetchy Dam, whose construction was one of the first major defeats of the nascent American environmental movement, was approved in 1913 to assist earthquake-ravaged San Francisco. Environmentalists and nature lovers, who said the valley’s beauty surpassed even Yosemite Valley’s, have constantly fought for its removal. They claim that restoring Hetch Hetchy Valley could reclaim an area that is half the size of Yosemite Valley and nearly identical in terms of beauty. Revenue and increased local spending from tourism could offset some or all of the losses from removing the dam. This problem can be thought of as appraising the relative value of two scarce resources, water and space, in Yosemite National Park.P6: How does one weigh the many different economic, cultural, and aesthetic considerations for removing or not removing these dams? Do certain interests, such as the rights of native people or the continued existence of native species of fish or wildlife, take precedence over economic factors, or should this be a utilitarian calculation of the greatest good for the greatest number? And does that number include only humans, or do other species count as well?P4: ■The cost of keeping outdated hydroelectric equipment running decades after it was installed or upgrading dam safety systems may not be worth it. ■This was proven true on the Elwha River in the Olympic National Park in Washington when an extraordinarily rich salmon habitat was being disrupted by an outdated hydroelectric plant. ■Before dams were built on the Elwha River, 400,000 salmon returned each year to spawn, but that number dropped to fewer than 3,000 after dams were put up. ■Once the hydroelectric power generating capacities of the dams had outlived their useful lives, the importance of this salmon habitat necessitated the removal of the dams on the Elwha River. Playing sports teaches people important lessons about life.
Common people spend a lot of time on watching sports in television or
following their favorite sports team, and it has negative effects on their life.

In recent years, Chinese government has began to advocate people to
participate in sports nationwide, which leads to an increasing concern on how
sports affect the individuals’ quality of life. And the concern brings about the
issue whether playing sports teaches people important lessons about the life. In
my opinion, sports do help us to learn life lessons of great importance and I am
going to develop my argument by presenting three aspects of the influence of
sports on people.
1,
No one would deny the fact that sports teach us the value of teamwork. With
the increasing complexity in today's tasks, dealing with problems alone no
longer works. It is teamwork that brings individual's talent together and
results in more effective work.
2,
In addition, there is no better way than playing sports to teach us the spirit of
Never Give Up. Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're
going to get.
3,
At last, it has to be reminded that sports can enhance one's leadership.
In conclusion, sports do not only teach us to build up our body muscles but
some more important qualities we need in our life.
A huge deserted boat called Mary Celeste was found by sailors in the ocean, but
its captain and crew, altogether 10 people, have been missing. Several theories
have been proposed to explain what happened to the 10 people who have been
aboard the Mary Celeste.
1.One theory is that the crew of the Mary Celeste fell into victim of pirate.
2.Another theory is based on the fact that the Mary Celeste was transporting
flammable liquid stored in barrels.
3. The third theory asserts that the captain and crew may have determined
that the ship was in danger of sinking.
None of the theories in the reading is convincing.
1.The crew was not the victim of pirate. The pirates on the ocean area just
wanted money, not the crew in the ship. But nothing in the ship is missing
except the captain and crew. The pirates demanded none of the things in the
ship, so they would not take away the crew.
2.The ship could not have been transporting flammable liquid, because if it was
transporting flammable liquid on aboard, the liquid may diffuse an unpleasant
smell, which would linger for a long time. But there is no smell in the ship. If
there was really smell, the crew could not tolerate it for such a long time.
3. The Mary Celeste was not likely to be sinking, for the reason that the ship
was navigating on ocean for a few days, specifically it lasted a long time, and
the ship was very expensive, so it could not be possible to be sinking. If it was
really sinking, the captain and crew could abandon the huge ship and buy
small boats on the way.
