Successful women with demanding jobs are almost twice as likely to suffer a heart attack, research shows.

Those with highly stressful careers (职业) are more at risk from strokes (中风) , high blood pressure and heart trouble. Women who say their role requires them to work very hard with little opportunity to use their creative skills are 40 per cent more likely to develop heart disease or need surgery, American researchers found. They are 88 per cent more likely to suffer a heart attack than those with more relaxed jobs — almost double the risk.

Traditionally doctors have always believed that men under pressure at work are far more likely to fall victim to heart disease. But these latest findings from researchers at Harvard Medical school in Boston show women are just as easily harmed — particularly as they often face the added stress of dealing with a family.

The study, which was presented to the American Heart Association's annual conference in Chicago, showed that successful women were 43 per cent more likely to need heart surgery. The

researchers looked at the records of more than 17,400 women in their 50s and 60s who all provided details on their work stress and job insecurity. Those with highly stressful roles, who felt they did -not have the chance to use their creative skills, were most at risk. Women who were scared of losing their job were more likely to be overweight, have high blood pressure and raised cholesterol (胆固醇) .

The researchers recommend successful women take certain steps to try to protect their health. These include regular exercise, trying not to bring your work home and having a close network of friends and family close by.

64. What can be learned from the text?

A. Women working with creative skills are more likely to develop heart disease.

B. Women under pressure are more likely to suffer heart trouble than men.

C. Women with more relaxed jobs are less likely to have a heart attack.

D. Women succeeding in their work are 40% more likely to need heart surgery.

65. According to the researchers, what can be done to protect women's health?

A. Taking less work and doing regular exercise.

B. Doing regular exercise and trying not to bring work home.

C. Going on a diet and doing regular exercise.

D. Taking relaxed jobs and spending more time with friends.

66. Which of the following shows the structure of the text?

(P1 = Paragraph 1, P2 = Paragraph2, P3 = Paragraph3 ...)

67. Which of the following would be the most proper title for the text?

A. Career Women More Likely to Have Heart Attacks

B. A Recent Science Report

C. Career Men Less Likely to Have Heart Attacks

D. Bread-winner or Bread-baker?

D

Nineteen-year-old Christopher Paolini has always loved adventure books. In fact, he plotted out his first book, Eragon, when he was just fifteen! Eragon is selling more copies than most of the Harry Potter books. A reporter from Who's News talked to this young author about his books and how he ended up being one of the best-selling authors of all time!

Reporter: What inspired you to write Eragon?

Christopher Paolini (CP): I love the sense of respect and wonder that you always get at the end of a great book or movie. Eragon was an attempt to express that. When I was about twelve, I

read a book called Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher. It's about a young boy who went into a mysterious shop and bought a dragon egg that ends up hatching (孵出). It stuck in my head. Eragon was an attempt to see what I could do with the idea myself.

Reporter: ____________

CP: I'm definitely influenced by authors who have a fairly inventive use of language, imaginative worlds and a sense of wonder—authors who write about things that other people don't. Reporter: What was the hardest thing about writing Eragon?

CP: Probably the editing because I wasn't used to it. It was a kind of shock doing it. But also I was having to learn a huge amount about grammar and punctuation (标点) and other things I'd never paid much attention to before. I'd say that editing and writing are pretty much equal in difficulty. My raw writing is a lot more professional now than it ever was before because of everything I learned through the editing process.

Reporter: How do you avoid becoming annoyed with the writing process? CP: Write about what you enjoy the most or what touches you the most; otherwise you'll never be able to survive a book-length project.

Reporter: Anything else you'd like to share with your readers?

CP: Before I wrote Eragon, I spent an entire month plotting out the entire story so I wasn't writing blindly. That helps. It's not just an adventure story; it is about Eragon trying to work out who we are, why we are here and how we can live honorably.

68. What does the underlined word "that" refer to in the third paragraph?

A. A story.

B. The sense of respect and wonder.

C. An idea.

D. A great book or movie.

69. What could the reporter's second question most probably be?

A. What's the most interesting thing about Eragon?

B. Where else do you get your ideas of Eragon!

C. How has your writing improved after Eragon?

D. Why did you attempt to deal with your ideas in Eragon?

70. What does Paolini find as difficult as writing?

A. Plotting out the story.

B. Grammar and commas.

C. The editing process.

D. The creative use of language.

71. What can be inferred from the text?

A. Christopher is the author of Harry Potter as well as Eragon.

B. Christopher only writes what he enjoys or what touches him.

C. Christopher spent an entire month plotting out the entire story.

D. Christopher really poured his heart and soul into Eragon.

US scientists have fixed experimental sensors (传感器) in some cities to map wind patterns and provide possible lifesaving information in a chemical or biological attack.

Two test models, in the form of nine-meter high aluminum (铝) towers, are now undergoing testing in New Y ork City, one in Greenwich V illage and the other near Times Square.

Half a dozen similar sensors have been fixed in and around Washington.

Simulations (模仿) of terrorist attacks carried out since the Sep. 11,2001 attacks have stressed the importance of finding out as soon as possible those areas that would be most affected by giving out poisonous gas or radioactive material into the air.

Now, the only reliable sources of information on wind speeds and direction are major airports, which are generally located too far away from city centers to be of much use.

The experimental sensors measure wind strength and direction 10 times per second. The information is downloaded through the Internet to computers that can turn out a detailed wind map, updated every 15 minutes.

Addressing a recent House of Representatives committee meeting, the director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA's) "Air Resources" laboratory, Bruce Hicks, stressed the importance of developing the wind mapping program.

"The wind sensors now being tested were produced by scientists recognizing there's a real problem and we'd better start handling it fast or else we'll get into trouble." Hicks said.

Funds (资金) during the testing period had been provided by the new Department for Homeland Security which will decide whether to fix sensor networks in major US cities, if the experiment should have positive results.

72. The purpose of developing the wind mapping program is to _____.

A. get lifesaving information during terrorist attacks

B. get useful information about weather changes

C. map the speed and direction of the wind

D. prevent possible terrorist attacks

73. According to the text, the information from major airports is _____.

A. slowly downloaded

B. not quite reliable

C. quickly updated

D. not very useful

74. From the text, we can learn that the wind mapping program _____.

A. has been put into practical use

B. is being experimented

C. is just an idea under discussion

D. has finally failed for lack of money

75. What is the text mainly about?

A. Scientists' mapping wind to sense terrorist attacks.

B. Whether wind mapping program is useful or not.

C. How the wind mapping program works.

D. The importance of wind mapping program.

The hardest thing in the world is saying yes to the world. Do you say yes to the world? Most of us have a habit of going through our days saying no to the things we don't like and yes to the things we do, and yet, everything we face is our life. We won't say yes to the things we do not like, because we fear that we will not remove them forever.

But in fact, it is only through accepting the existence of what's not working for us that we can begin the process of change. When we say yes to the world, we enter into a state of trust that whatever our situation is, we can work with it. We express belief in ourselves, and the world, and we also express a willingness to learn from whatever happens to us, rather than running and hiding when we don't like what we see. Therefore, in one word, saying yes is definitely good for our life.

The question we might ask ourselves is what it will take for us to get to the point of saying yes. For some of us, it takes dealing with something we can't escape or refuse, and so we are left with no choice but to say yes. For others, it just seems a natural process of events that leads us to make the decision to say yes to life. Saying yes to life might be difficult at first, and even painful at times, but if we continue to say yes to every moment through the process, it will be far less difficult in the end. And we will find the joy of being in a positive talk to the world with a very powerful word—yes. We should accept everything life puts in front of us.

第二节书面表达

One possible version

Helping others is helping yourself As is known to all,no one can avoid difficulties. So everyone needs others' help. However, it is a pity that some people won't offer their help to people in trouble. I have had such experiences. Sometimes when I can't work out a maths problem and turn to my classmates, they often refuse me,which makes me annoyed. In fact, I think they might have problems that I know how to work out. If they are willing to help me, I will be ready to help them. Otherwise, I may refuse them too. That's why an old saying goes like this: Helping others is helping yourself. I hope everyone should be unselfish and do whatever they can to help others. Only in this way can we help each other and improve each other.
