“鸭尾”、“RS”以及“2.7”，这都是保时捷911 Carrera RS 2.7的典型标志之一。
但这台车的意义远非几个词语能够囊括的，该车投产时，是当时最快的德国量产车，也是第一款配备前后扰流板的量产车型，也是因此获得了“鸭尾”的绰号。
1972年，保时捷911 Carrera RS 2.7掀起了在量产车上安装后扰流板的潮流。
该车基于普通911打造，但保时捷的目标是让该车成为具有多项技术创新的赛车以及拉力赛的基础车型。
第一代911中最强大的车型是首款被命名为“Carrera”的911，这也是保时捷系列中至高荣耀的称号。
保时捷的工程师对该车的重量、空气动力学、发动机和底盘都经过深入研究。
从1972年5月开始，大约有15名工程师陆续加入开发行列，同时也有生产人员的加入。
保时捷最初计划制造500辆样车，以便让911 Carrera RS 2.7允许开发认证的Group 4 Special GT赛车。
1972年10月5日，这款新车在巴黎车展亮相，同年11月底，所有500辆车都已售出。
保时捷对这款车的成功感到非常惊讶，到1973年7月，该车的销量翻了三倍，共制造了1,580辆样车，在生产出第1,000辆后，保时捷911 Carrera RS 2.7就获得了Group 3和Group 4的认证。
另外保时捷还为该车开发了选装版M471设备包，这也因此制造
了200辆轻量化运动版车型，另外还有55台赛车版、17台基础车型和1308台Touring车型。
911 Carrera RS 2.7 'Light' (M471) 版本的内饰根据客户的要求进行精简设计，该版本的后排座椅、地毯、时钟、挂衣钩和扶手都被去掉了。
同时换装两台轻量化座椅，甚至发动机罩上的保时捷徽标最初也是粘在上面的。
而另一方面，相比“Touring”选装包（M472），“Sport”选装包的重量减轻了115公斤，整备质量为960公斤，售价为34,000德国马克。
M471运动套件单选售价700德国马克，而“Touring”选装包（M472）售价2,500德国马克。
动力部分，该车的2.7升水平对置六缸燃油喷射发动机在6,300rpm时产生强大的210匹马力，在5,100rpm时产生255Nm的扭矩。
这使得最轻的“Sport”版在5.8秒内就可以破百，这也使911 Carrera RS 2.7成为第一款打破德国杂志《汽车和运动》设定的6秒量产车记录，最高时速则突破了245公里/小时。
911 Carrera RS 2.7成为结合重量、性能、空气动力学和操控性的完美车型。
而薄金属板、薄窗户以及塑料部件等都有助于将车辆的总重量降低到新车型获得认证所需的900公斤以下。
该车的空气动力学也得到改善，目的是最大限度地减少高速行驶时前后轴的升力，以实现更好的操控。
工程师Hermann Burst和Tilman Brodbeck以及设计师Rolf Wiener首次为该车开发了后扰流板，并在风洞和跑道上对其进行了测试。
其目标是保留911的封闭式车身风格，通过适当的措施弥补倾斜
的尾部造成的视觉缺点，并改善911的空气动力学性能。
当该车在高速行驶时，新鸭尾可以将911 Carrera RS 2.7牢牢贴在路面，并为尾部发动机提供额外的冷却空气，而增加了鸭尾后，该车的最高速度提高了4.5公里/小时，工程师在测试过程中发现，使用更高的扰流板可以减少阻力，从而提高最高速度。
因此，他们不断将后扰流板向上提升，并在边缘处使用金属板过渡，直到找到阻力反转点。
1972年8月5日，三名保时捷员工向德国专利局提交了编号为2238704的专利公开文件，正式为鸭尾申请专利。
工程师们还升级了车辆底盘，保时捷在当时已经有了使用更宽后轮的赛车经验，因此开发工程师也在911 Carrera RS 2.7上进行了相关试验。
保时捷希望通过后轴上的宽轮胎提高牵引力和操控性，因为后轴上承载的重量更大。
这也是保时捷量产车首次在前轴和后轴上采用不同尺寸的轮胎。
前部搭配Fuchs锻造6J×15轮圈和185/70 VR-15轮胎，后部7J×15轮圈搭配215/60 VR-15轮胎。
为了使车辆驾驶起来更加舒适，保时捷在靠近轮拱的后部将车身加宽了42毫米。
随着运动原型车法规的变化，同时由于新的3.0升排量限制而阻碍了车辆进一步的开发，保时捷也因此结束了一个非常成功的时代。
1972年11月，车身明显加宽的911 Carrera RSR在环法自行车赛上首次亮相后，保时捷决定在1973年为911开启新篇章。
那一年2月，由彼得·格雷格和赫尔利·海伍德驾驶的RSR在代托纳24小时耐力赛中以22圈的领先优势冲过终点线，这是新赛季的辉煌开局。
而Herbert Müller和Gijs van Lennep则于1973年5月在
Targa Florio赛事获胜，这也印证了带有较大尾翼的RSR在铺装赛道和拉力赛都可以表现的非常好。
在第一赛季，911 Carrera RSR赢得了三项国际冠军和七项全国冠军——为911在未来几十年的成功奠定了基础。
而在1973年10月举行的国际冠军赛（IROC）上，来自美国的Roger Penske甚至派出12辆相同的911 Carrera RSR 3.0赛车，来自不同级别赛车的车手来相互竞争。
凭借911 Carrera RS 2.7，保时捷开发了一款既可以用作日常驾驶也可以用于赛道的汽车，911 Carrera RS 2.7把豪华跑车带到了赛道。
“Carrera”字样首次出现在911 Carrera RS 2.7侧面下部装饰区域。
其是西班牙语，在英语中翻译为“比赛”，后扰流板上的RS代表“Rennsport” ——赛车，对于保时捷而言，“Carrera Panamericana”是新名称的灵感来源。
1953年，保时捷凭借550 Spyder在耐力赛中夺得了冠军，在1954年，获得了总成绩第三名，而在随后的几年里，保时捷将Carrera这个名字用在搭载着1954年四凸轮轴/Fuhrmann发动机的最强大车辆上，例如356 A 1500 GS Carrera与356 B 2000 GS Carrera GT。
Carrera这个字样是从1963年开始装饰在保时捷904 Carrera GTS的后部，而在1965年的906 Carrera 6上，可以在前轮拱后面的翼子板上找到。
简而言之，它是911未来顶级车型的理想名称。
除了Carrera字样外，保时捷还提供独特的设计特色：当时有29
种车身油漆色调可供选择，其中有一些非常亮眼的颜色，其中包括亮黄色、艳红色和血橙色等。
保时捷还可以满足个别客户的颜色要求，比如轮辋的颜色与车身或侧面的Carrera字样相匹配，例如带有红色、蓝色或绿色字样的白色车身的车辆。
直到今天，这些字母仍然具有非凡的意义，其RS缩写也是如此，其一次又一次地出现在最运动的911车型上——911 GT2 RS/GT3 RS等。
