Aims of this period:
1. Get the main idea and the writing structure of a blog post.
2. Learn to write a blog post in appropriate format and language
3. Develop the students’ sense and ability of co-operative learning and
self-learning
4. Train the students’ critical thinking and inspire the students to think
about online safety critically.
Important points and difficulties:
Important point: How to get information from a text and the structure of
a blog post.
Difficulties:
To write a blog post in the appropriate language and format.
Preparations:
Collect some blog posts about online safety (for the teacher) ;
Review grammar: the present perfect passive voice ,sentence structures
about making suggestions and vocabulary regarding online safety.
Teaching procedures:
Step1: Lead-in
1. Ask a question:Have you ever written a blog post on the Internet ? Is it
in Chinese or in English? What do you call the person who writes a blog?
2. Get through a few blog posts about online safety.
Step2: Preparation for reading
Help the students to smooth away the obstacles in reading by explaining
some key words and expressions in the text.
Step3: Skimming
Let the students skim the text for the main idea, the structure of the
text,and the language features, then answer the questions.
Step4. Scanning
Scan the text for specific information:
1.What tips did the blogger put forward?
2. Who are the online troublemakers the blog post
mentions?
3. What does the following terms mean?
Step5: intensive reading
Further reading for details, try to fill in the blanks with key words from
the text.
Step6:Guide for writing a blog post
Briefly introduce the way of writing a blog post and prepare some useful
expressions and sentence structures in writing a blog post.
Step7: Presentation and sharing
Get the students to exchange and revise their partners’ drafts ,using the
checklist for judging and correcting a draft.
Step 8: Homework
Ask the students to write a blog post about giving gifts.
