Dear all,

Please read Professor Hume’s email about his next lecture on Rose Parks.

Susan Miller

Secretary

Dear Susan,

Please forward this message to students of my history class.

Besides the life story of Rosa Parks in the textbook, the students are also required to read the passage below and some related stories that can be borrowed from the school library.

Ted Hume

The early experiences of Rosa Parke(1913-2005), long known as the “mother of the civil rights movement,”were not different from those of many African- Americans at that time. The black woman, however, turned the course of American history in December 1955 when she refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white man. “By sitting down,’ remarked John Lewis, “she was standing up for all Americans. ”

Among the numerous awards Parks received in her life were the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1996) and the Congressional Gold Medal (1999).

Parks died on Oct. 24, 2005. At St. Paul A. M. E. Church in Montgomery, a large crowd including Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice Celebrated her life. Rice said she and others, who grew up when the political activities of Parks held public attention, might not have realized her impact (影响) on their lives, “but I can honestly say that without Mrs. Parks, I probably would not be standing here as Secretary of State.”

After her casket(灵柩) was placed at the Capitol, U.S. President Bush, members of Congress and ordinary Americans paid their respects. In American history Parks is the first woman to lie in state at the Capitol, a very high regard usually reserved for Presidents of the United States.

The United States government wants to know what the pubic thinks about its findings on the safety of cloned animals.

The food and Drug Administration says meat and milk from clones of adult cattle, pigs and goats are safe to eat. An F.D.A. official called them “as safe to eat as the food we eat every day.”A nd when those clones reproduce sexually(有性繁殖), the agency says, their offspring(后代) are safe to eat as well. But research on cloned sheep

is limited. So the F.D.A. proposes that sheep clones not be used for human food. The United States this year could become the first country to approve the sale of foods from cloned animals. First, however, the public will have ninety days to comment on three proposed documents. On December 28th the F.D.A. released a long report, called a draft risk assessment, along with two policy documents.

The agency says it must receive comments by April second. The F.D.A. seemed ready to act several years ago, but an advisory committee called for more research.

For now, the government will continue to ask producers to honor a request that they not sell foods from cloned animals.

Clones are still rare. They cost a lot and are difficult to produce.

The F.D.A. says most food from cloning is expected to come not from clones themselves, but from their sexually reproduced offspring. It says clones are expected to be used mostly as breeding animals to spread good qualities.

Public opinion studies show most Americans do not like the idea of food from cloned animals. But this research also shows the public knows little about cloning. Cloning differs from genetic engineering. A cell taken from a so-called donor animals is grown into an embryo(胚胎) in the laboratory. Next, the embryo is placed into the uterus(子宫) of a female animal. If the process is successful, the pregnancy reaches full term and a genetic copy of the donor animal is born.

As societies develop, their members start to see things not so much according to what they need, but according to what they want. When people have enough money, these wants become demands.

Now, it’s important for the managers in a company to understand what their customers want if they are going to develop effective making strategies(策略). There are various ways of doing this. One way at supermarkets(超市), for example, is to interview(采访) customers while they’re doing their shopping. They can be asked what they prefer to buy and then the results of the research can be studied. This provides information on which to base future marketing strategies. It’s also quite normal for top managers from department stores to spend a day or two each month visiting stores and mixing freely with the public, as if they were ordinary customers, to get an idea of how customers act.

Another way to get information from customers is to give them something. For example, some fast food restaurants give away tickets in magazines or on the street that permit customers to get part of their meal for nothing. As well as being a good

way of attracting customers into the restaurants to spend their money, it also allows the managers to get a feel for where to attract customers and which age groups to attract.

Another strategy used at some well-known parks such as Disneyland is for top managers to spend at least one day in their work, touring the park dressed as Mickey Mouse or something like that. This provides them with a perfect chance to examine the scene and watch the customers without being noticed.

63. The text is designed for ______.

A. managers

B. salesmen

C. researchers

D. customers

64. Which of the following can help managers get useful information?

A. Visiting customers themselves

B. Giving customers free food on the street

C. Visiting parks as ordinary customers

D. Asking customers questions at supermarkets

65. What does the word “this” underlined in the last sentence refer to ?

A. Visiting Disneyland

B. Wearing attractive clothes

C. Acting Mickey Mouse

D. Dressing up and walking around

66. The main idea of the text is ______

A. how to do market research

B. how to develop marketing strategies

C. how to find out customers social needs

D. how to encourage customers to spend more money

D

Stop Spam!

When I first got an e-mail account ten years ago, I received communications only from family, friends, and colleagues. Now it seems that every time I check my e-mail, I have an endless series of advertisements and other correspondence that do not interest me at all. If we want e-mail to continue to be useful, we need specific laws that make spamming(发送垃圾邮件) a crime.

If lawmakers do not do something soon to prohibit spam, the problem will certainly get much worse. Computer programs allow spammers to send hundreds of millions of e-mails almost instantly. As more and more advertisers turn to spam to sell their products, individual(个人的) e-mail boxes are often flooded with spam e-mail. Would people continue to use e-mail if they had to deal with an annoying amount of spam each time?

This problem is troubling for individuals and companies as well. Many spam e-mails contain computer viruses that can shut down the entire network of a company. Companies rely on e-mail for their employees to communicate with each other. Spam frequently causes failures in their local communications networks, and their employees are thus unable to communicate effectively. Such a situation results n a loss of productivity and requires companies to repeatedly repair their networks. These computer problems raise production costs of companies, which are, in the end, passed on to the consumer.

For these reasons, I believe that lawmakers need to legislate(立法) against spam. Spammers should be fined, and perhaps sent to prison if they continue to disturb people. E-mail is a tool which helps people all over the world to communicate conveniently, but spam is destroying this convenience.

67. What does the underlined word “correspondence” in Paragraph l probably mean?

A. Messages

B. Ideas

C. Connections

D. Programs

68. According to the text, what is the major cause of the flooding spam?

A. Companies rely on e-mail for communications

B. More people in the world communicate by e-mail

C. Many computer viruses contain spam e-mails

D. More advertisers begin to promote sales through spam

69. According to Paragraph 3, who is the final victim of spam?

A. The business

B. The advertiser

C. The employee

D. The consumer

70. What is the purpose of the text?

A. To inform

B. To educate

C. To persuade

D. To instruct

One possible version

Nowadays many parents decide to leave their work in order to keep their children

company in schools when they reach Senior Grade Three. There are positive effects as well as negative effects over the issue.

The advantage is obvious. With parents preparing delicious food and helping doing all the washing, children can eat properly and have more time to study and enjoy themselves.

However, it costs more money and gives students more pressure because they have to be thinking from time to time how they can reward their parents. On the other hand, it may change the way the students spend their time. If a student is always under the protection of his parents, he can’t develop his own ability to live independently, nor will he be able to deal with his daily life properly. They might meet with trouble when getting along with his fellow students in the days to come, which may affect his work or even his life in the future.

I hope we students should not only learn the book knowledge, but also learn to live independently.

或是I like she。

A For me, the greatest story of rags to riches is that of Andrew Carnegie, who started life in poverty but became one of the richest men in the world. Carnegie was born in Scotland in 1835, the son of a weaver. In 1848, the family moved to the United States and at 13Carnegie began to work in a cotton mill, earning $1.5per week. About three years later, he found a better job as a telegraph messenger boy. At work, his superiors were impressed by his abilities and willingness to work hard. In 1853, he gained an office job at the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. This was his first big break. He continued to impress and rose rapidly through the company, gaining more and more responsibility. At the same time, Carnegie loved reading very much and made use of every opportunity to visit the library. He read widely on all subjects, particularly literature. Carnegie now began to save a little money and, with the help of his employer, began to make some successful investments. He invested in the iron industry and eventually set up in business himself, owing several iron and steel plants. This was where he made his fortune. By the 1890s, the Carnegie Steel Company was the biggest and most profitable business in the world. Carnegie had always believed that the pursuit of wealth would never end in itself. In his view, successful, wealthy people should redistribute their wealth for the benefit of everyone in society. True to his word, in 1901, at the age of 66, he retired from business and devoted the rest of his life to charity work. Carnegie's lack of formal education and his poor family background clearly didn't put barriers in the A. Becoming more and more intelligent. B. Having a better sense of confidence. C. Reading more and more books. D. Being promoted to higher ranks. 22. When did Carnegie get his first big success in his li f e? A. When he took a job as a telegraph messenger boy. B. When he worked at the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. C. When he made investments in the iron industry. D. When he founded the Carnegie Steel Company. 23. W h at ca n b e lea rn t fro m t h e te x t? A. Carnegie's employers had a high opinion of him. B. Carnegie made the investments independently after saving enough money. C. Carnegie believed that we should try to earn as much money as possible. D. Carnegie could have been more successful if he had been formally educated. 24. Which of the following will be the suitable title for the te x t? A. From Rags to Riches: The Story of Andrew Carnegie B. Andrew Carnegie: A Wealthy Man C. Steel& Iron: The Most Profitable Business D. Intelligence and Good Business Sense: Two Factors in Becoming Wealthy. B We always can see firefighters holding a hose(水管)outside of a burning building, but the Golden Eagles Hotshots don't fight fires quite that way. When they go into action, you may not even see a fire truck. The Hotshots are firefighters who battle fires in wilderness areas. But don't think you'll only find them in their home state California. Wherever there is a national wildfire emergency, the Golden Eagles Hotshots could be there.
