A

The scream echoed in the house and hurt my ears as I watched my mother and father fight.

It killed me inside knowing that their marriage was over, and there was nothing that could

be done to save it. I knew one had to go, and I knew who it would be.

My mother started drinking when I was 2 years old. She would leave the house late at night and not return until the next morning. I knew my father was hurting inside, and I felt his pain too. He had to do something about that, because her problems were beginning to change our lives.

I watched her walk out that night, not realizing what was happening to our family. It didn’t occur to me that I would not see her again for almost two years.

That day changed my life in more ways than I can say. I had looked up to and counted on her --- and now she was gone. I believe she was perfect in every way, and hoped to be just like her. After a while, though, I began to see just who she really was.

The court gave my father full custody(监护) of my brother and me; my mother had no visitation right. It was two years before she was allowed to see us.

That first Saturday visit came and went --- she didn’t arrive. She had her chance and blew it, which hurt me more than anything. I fell into a serious depression. I sat in my room and did not sleep, eat, talk or do anything but cry for six months.

Then she was given another chance to see us. This time she came, but she was completely drunk. She was violent and out of control; she refused to leave. My father had to call the police to remove her.

After that visit, my mother decided to try to sort herself out. She began attending Alcoholics Anonymous(嗜酒者互戒会). It was difficult for her in the beginning, and she was in and out of the program constantly.

Finally, she decided to give it her all; she went on with the program and became stronger every day for her and for us.

My mother has been sober for 10 years. Even though my parents are no longer together, I feel very lucky and thankful that I have my mother in my life again. She is the same woman now that I used to know and love --- an amazing person. I have learned from her mistakes and that will help me in the future to be a better person. There is hope for everyone --- if you give it your all and believe in yourself, anything can happen.

21. From the writer’s reaction after the first Saturday visit, we ca n conclude that __________.

A.she was disappointed in her mother’s method of dealing with drinking

B.she had expected her mother to come and return to her old self

C.she no longer expect her mother to change

D.she had a clear idea of who her mother really was

22. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?

A.The writer had her mother go home in the end.

B.The writer’s mother could hardly win her respect again.

C.The writer drew strength from the fact that her mother finally pulled through.

D.After the second visi t, the writer’s mother continued attending Alcoholics Anonymous all

the time.

23. The underlined word “sober” in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to “__________”.

A.not drunk

B. not calm

C. single

D. healthy

24. Which is the best title for the passage?

A.Drinking Drives Mother Away, Love Draws her Back

B.The Reunion of a Ruined Family

C.Believe in Your Family and Yourself

D.Medical and Psychological Dangers of Drinking

I’ve visited several controversial(有争议的) dam sites around the world. For all of them, the tension has been between the national economic advantage offered by the dam and the local environment and social damage caused by its construction. The countries often sell the power to international neighbors, rather than directly improve electricity access to the local people.

Some countries, such as Chile, which is planning to build a dam across Patagonian Rivers, and

Laos, which plans to dam the Mekong, rely on energy imports and so hydro(电能) is a very attractive domestic opti on. Other countries, such as Brazil which is planning the world’s third largest dam at Belo Monte, China which recently complete的 the largest dam at Three Gorges, and Ethiopia which is planning dams along the Omo, insists that these dams are essential for national economic development.

The economic benefits can be huge. The Aswan Dam on Egypt’s Nile, for example, was highly controversial when it was built in the 1960’s. Yet for all the environmental damage to its downstream(下游的)river system, it’s very d ifficult for you to find an Egyptian that is in favor of its removal. The dam has been an outstanding economic success, bringing improved harvests from better irrigation despite drought conditions, hydropower and flood protection worth billions of dollars.

So if we accept that many controversial dams are going to be built, how can we limit their damage? Jamie Skinner, who was senior advisor to the World Commission on Dams, and now heads the Water division at the International Institute for Environment and Development, suggests the answer might be to issue dam builders with limited-length licenses. “In America, the licenses are only for 30 or 50 years, after which there is a review. The reason why many dams are being removed there now is that their licenses have expired(到期)and the dams would no longer pass the stricter environmental planning regulations, ” he says.

29. How do the countries gain their economic benefits from dams?

A. By exporting the power.

B. By improving the local environment.

C. By increasing the energy charge.

D. By improving the local use of electricity.

30. The examples are given in the second paragraph in order to show _____.

A. these countries are in great need of power

B. dams bring huge economic benefits to the countries

C. local people are eager to benefit from dams

D. the benefits as well as the disadvantages of dams are huge

31. Why do Egyptians oppose to removing the Aswan Dam?

A. They are used to living around the dam.

B. They are well protected against the drought.

C. They regard it as the symbol of their country.

D. They benefit from the dam more than expected.

32. What is the key way of limiting dam’s damage according to Jamie Skinner?

A. Reviewing the dams every year.

B. Giving dam builders more freedom.

C. Removing the dams every 30 or 50 years.

D. Making stricter environmental planning rules.

Last month two shocking front-page reports highlighted a sad trend in parenting:the end of the picture books. In the rush to early reading, it seems parents prefer reading chapter books to picture books. This is a big mistake.

In the second report, from Paris, a glorious exhibition of Monet’s works reminds us how artistic expression gives form to our thinking. The rush to read chapter books should not deprive(剥夺)children of artistic pleasure, or of one of mankind’s deepest and most profound modes of thinking and feeling.

I was shocked to read Julie Bosman’s front page report in the New York Times, “Picture Books, Long a Staple, Lose Out in t he Rush to Read. ” Is it true that parents of kindergarten

and first graders are pressuring their children “to leave the picture books behind and move on to more text-heavy chapter books” — all for the sake of strictly standardized testing? What has happened to cognition(认知) imagining, and feeling? If you think depriving children of picture books is a good idea, just read a wonderful “critics notebook” review from the same paper in the same week, by Michael Kimmelman:“Paris Rediscovers Monet’s Magic at Gran d Palais.”

Kimmelman describes the sweeping show of over 160 of Monet’s paintings as “the biggest spectacle in Europe this fall” —“a box office breakthrough” —but most importantly for this discussion, he goes on to explain why:Pictures, in this case of M onet’s, don’t just “stimulate sun, rain and snow, but states of mind as well.” The same can be said of picture books —they stimulate a state of mind in children that words alone cannot achieve. “Monet’s vision of places can come to inhabit and even take the place of our direct memories of them,” Kimmelman writes. For me, The Velveteen Rabbit — a chapter book with wonderful art comes to mind:the pictures improve the value of the story.

33. The passage reminds Monet’s work in order to _____.

A. think high ly of Monet’s works.

B. prove mankind’s deepest feeling

C. warn people not to deprive children’s artistic pleasure

D. motivate more people to learn art

34. What’s the main idea of the passage?

A. Explanation about two surprising reports.

B. Picture books should return to the world of children

C. Paris rediscovers Monet’s magic.

D. Comments of Kimmelman about Monet’s works.

35. What’s the author’s attitude towards children’s leaving picture books?

A. Excited

B. Puzzled

C. Curious

D. Angry 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Rose is digging in the ground for a potato when along comes Peter. Seeing that there is no one in sight, Peter starts to scream. Peter’s angry mother rushes over and drives Rose away. Once his mum has gone, Peter helps himself to Rose’s potato.

We’ve all experienced similar annoying tricks when we were young—the brother who stole your ball and then got you into trouble by telling your parents you had hit him. But Rose and Peter are no t humans. They’re African baboons(狒狒). 36

Peter’s scream and his mother’s attack on Rose could have been a matter of chance, but Peter was later seen playing the same tricks on others. 37

Studying behavior like this is complicated, but scientists discovered apes(猿) clearly showed that they intended to cheat and knew they themselves had been cheated. 38 An ape was annoying him, so the psychologist tricked her into going away by pretending that he had seen something interesting. When she found nothing, she walked back, hit him over the head with her hand and ignored him for the rest of the day.

Another way to decide whether an animal’s behavior is deliberate is to look for actions that are not normal for that animal. A zoo worker describes how an ape dealt with an enemy. “He slowly stole up on the other ape from behind, walking on tiptoe. When he got close to his enemy, he pushed him violently in the back, and then ran indoors.” Wild apes do not normally walk on tiptoe. 39 But looking at the many cases of deliberate trickery in apes, it is impossible

to explain them all as simple copying.

It seems that trickery does play an important part in ape societies. 40 Studying the intelligence of our closest relatives could be the way to understand the development of human intelligence.

A. In most cases the animal probably doesn’t know it is cheating.

B. An amusing example of this comes from a psychologist working in T anzania.

C. And playing tricks is as much a part of monkey behavior as it is of human behavior.

D. So the psychologists asked his colleagues if they had noticed this kind of trickery.

E. The ability of animals to cheat may be a better measure of their intelligence than their use of tools.

F. This use of a third individual to achieve a goal is only one of the many tricks commonly used by baboons.

G. Of course it’s possible that they could have learnt from humans that such works, without understanding why.

First of all, we should turn off the lights and the tap before we use them. Secondly, we’d better eat up what we buy in the school cafeteria. More important, we should form the habit of saving natural resources however we do.

参考范文:

Dear Sir,

I’m so grateful for your good service during my stay in Thailand for a tour, but I’m writing to ask a favor to find and send back my pack which I left in your hotel.

I checked in on July 1 and out on July 8. Setting off in a rush for the airport, I left the pack in Room 504. It’s a medium-sized, red leather backpack which contains some traveling books, a white iPod of special edition, a credit card and some cash. All in the pack matter to me, especially the iPod, a precious gift from my father on my 18th birthday. So much do I cherish it that I feet upset for its loss.

If you find it, would you please post it to me? The return address is on the envelope.

I’ll appreciate it very much if you can give me your earliest reply and thank you for anything you can do for me.

Yours sincerely,

Li Hua

The goal of their game was to write the word “shmily” in a surprise place for the other to find. They took turns leaving “shmily” around the ho use, and as soon as one of them discovered it, it was their turn to hide it once more. They dragged “shmily” with their fingers through the sugar and flour containers to await whoever was preparing the next meal. “Shmily” was written in the steam left on t he mirror after a hot shower, where it would reappear bath after bath. There was no end to the places where “shmily” would pop up. Little notes with “shmily” were found on car seats, or taped to steering wheels. The notes were put inside shoes and left und er pillows. “Shmily” was written in the dust upon the mantel(壁炉架)and traced in the ashes of the fireplace. This mysterious word was as much a part of my grandparents’ house as the furniture. It took me a long time before I was able to fully appreciate my grandparents’ game. Skepticism has kept me from believing in true love—one that is pure and enduring (持久的). However, I never doubted my grandparents’ relationship. It was based on passionate affection which not everyone is lucky enough to experience. But there was a dark cloud in my grandparents’ life: my grandmoth er had breast cancer. The disease had first appeared ten years earlier. As always, Grandpa was with her every step of the way. He comforted her in their yellow room, painted that way so that she could always be surrounded by sunshine, even when she was too sick to go outside. But my grandmother grew steadily weaker until, finally, she could not leave the house any more. Then one day, what we all dreaded finally happened. Grandma was gone. “Shmily.” It was written in yellow on the pink ribbons of my grandmother’s funeral bouquet (花束). As the crowd thinned and the last mourners turned to leave, Grandpa stepped up to my grandmother’s coffin and, taking a shaky breath, he began to sing to her. Through his tears and grief, the song came: S-h-m-i-l-y: See How Much I Love You. 21. The first paragraph is mainly about ________. A.what the word “shmily” means B.how the author’s grandparents played their special game C.how the author appreciated her grandparents’ game D.how the author’s grandparents cared for each other 22. The underlined phrase “pop up” in Paragraph 1 means ________. A. appear B. change C. survive D. work
