Personal experience
In 1865, O. Henry was 3 years old. In the same year, his mother William Potter died due to tuberculosis. This year, his father moved the whole family to living with his grandmother. He and his brother were sent to a private school run by the school. In 1885, he met a girl named Athol Porter at the age of 17, when she was in high school. On the night of July 1, 1887, Athol Estes married O. Henry in secret. O. Henry lived a very happy life with his wife. His wife encouraged O. Henry to write, so he published works in "Detroit free press and true“ in the year of marriage. In July 25, 1897, his wife Athol Porter died of tuberculosis.

• The Gift of the Magi describes an extremely poor young couple id determined to give Christmas presents to each other. He sells his watch to buy a set of combs for her long hair, and she cuts off her hair and sells it to buy him a watch fob. The moral of the story is that physical possessions, however valuable thy may be, are of little value in the grand scheme of things.

• His father was a physician. When William was three, his mother died, and he was raised by his parental grandmother and paternal aunt.
• In 1894 Porter started a humorous weekly The Rolling Stone. It was at this time that he began heavy drinking. When the weekly failed, he joined the Houston Post as a reporter and columnist.
• William was an avid reader, but at the age of fifteen he left school, and then worked in a drug store and on a Texas ranch. He continued to Houston, where he had a number of jobs, including that of bank clerk.
• In 1819, he died at Columbus.
