Each one is carrying a small basket with a single egg inside. Soon more students join them-each one of them is also carrying a basket with an egg. The eggs in a basket are part of a new school program that helps young people understand that having a baby is a great duty. At the beginning of the program, the teacher puts the students in pairs-one girl and one boy. Each pair gets an egg, which they must take care of for two weeks. For those fourteen days, the students have to take care of the eggs as though they were real babies. Students whose eggs get broken have to start the two weeks all over again with a new egg. One person in each pair must have the egg with him or her at all times-twenty-four hours a day. At no time can they let the egg be out of sight. If a teacher catches you without your egg, said one student, she makes you go get it. They are really strict. (阅读理解题)Every human being has a unique arrangement of the skin on his fingers and this arrangement is unchangeable. Scientists and experts have proved uniqueness of finger prints and discovered that no exactly similar pattern is passed on from parents to children, though nobody knows why this is the case. The structure on a person’s fingers does not change with growth and is not affected by superficial injuries. Burns, cuts and otherdamage to the outer part of the skin will be replaced on time by new one which bears a reproduction of the original pattern. It is only when the inner skin is injured that the arrangement will be destroyed. Some criminals make use of this fact to remove their own fingerprints but this is a dangerous and rare step to take. Fingerprints can be made easily with printer’s ink. They can be recorded easily. With special methods, identification can be achieved successfully within a short time. Because of the simplicity and economy of this system, fingerprints have often been used as a method of solving criminal cases. A suspected man denies a charge, but his finger prints can prove who he is even if his appearance has been changed by age or accident. When a suspect leaves fingerprints behind at the scene of crime, they are difficult to detect with the naked eye. Special techniques are used to “develop” them. Some of the marks found are incomplete but identification is possible of a print in the size of a quarter of an inch square can be obtained(1). (阅读理解题)Advertisement can be thought of “as the means of making known in order to but or sell goods or services”. Advertisement aims to increase people’s awareness and arouse in terest. It tries to inform and to persuade. The media are all used to spread the message. The press offers a fairly cheap method, and magazines are used to reach special sections of the market. The cinema and commercial radio are useful for local markets. Television, although more expensive, can be very effective. Public notices are fairly cheap and more permanent in their power of attraction. Other ways of increasing consumer interest are through exhibitions and trade fairs as well as direct mail advertisement. There can be no doubt that the growth in advertisement is one of the most striking features of the western world in this century. Many businesses such as those handling frozen foods, liquor, tobacco and medicines have been built up largely by advertisement. We might ask whether the cost of advertisement is paid for by the producer orby the customer. Since advertisement forms part of the cost of production, which has to be covered by the selling price, it is clear that it is the customer who pays for the advertisement. However, if large-scale advertisement leads to increased demand, production costs are reduced, and the customer pays less. It is difficult to measure exactly the influence of advertisement on sales. When the market is growing, advertisement helps to increase demand. When the market is shrinking, advertisement may prevent a bigger fall in sales than would occur without its support. What is clear is that business would not pay large sums for advertisement if they were not convinced of its value to them.(1). (阅读理解题)Mass media, the tools of communication, can be divided into two groups: print media and electronic media. By print media, we mean books, newspapers and magazines. Electronic media include television, computer, radio and movie. Mass media allow us to record and passinformation rapidly to a large, scattered audience. They extend our ability to talk to each other by helping us overcome barriers caused by time and space. Mass media make daily life easier for us in various ways. Firstly, they help us keep a watch on our world. They gather and pass on information we would be unlikely or unable to obtain on our own. Secondly, mass media help us arrange our time and life. What we talk about and what we think about are greatly influenced by the media. When people get together they tend to talk about certain happenings in newspapers or on TV. Because we are exposed to different points of views through different kinds of media every day, we are able to evaluate all sides of a certain issue. Thirdly, the media are used to persuade people. Newspapers, magazines and TV are filled with all kinds of colorful, persuasive advertisements. Though many advertisements may not say openly that they want you to buy a certain product, they describe their products in such a way that you may want to buy them. Fourthly, the media also entertain. All media make efforts to entertain their audience. For instance, even though the newspaper is a prime medium of information, it also contains entertainment features. Television, motion pictures, some radio stations and magazines are devoted mainly to entertainment. It is estimated that in the future, the entertainment function of mass media will become even more important than it is now.(1). Some of the greatest men in history had thought about the problem. One of them, for example, was the great Italian artist, Leonardo Da Vinci. In the 16th century he made designs for machines that would fry, but they were never built. Throughout history, other less famous men had wanted to fly. An example was a man in England 800 years ago. He made a pair of wings from chicken feathers. Then he fixed them to his body and jumped into air from a tall building. He did not fly very far. Instead, he fell to the ground and broke every bone in his body. The first real step took place in France, in 1783. two brothers, the Montgolfiers, made a very large “hot air balloon”. They knew that hot air rises. Why not fill a balloon with it? The balloon was made of cloth and paper. In September of that year, the King and Queen of France came to see the balloon. They watched it carry the very first air passengers into the sky. The passengers were a sheep and a chicken. We do not know how they felt about the trip. But we do know that the trip lasted eight minutes and that the animals landed safely. Two months later, two men did the same thing. They rose above Paris in a balloonof the same kind. Their trip lasted twenty-five minutes and they traveled about.(1). (阅读理解题) A scientist who wants to predict the way in which consumers will spend their money must study consumer behavior. He must obtain data both on the resources of consumers and on the motives that tend to encourage or discourage money spending. If an economist were asked which of three groups borrow most—people with rising incomes, stable incomes, or decreasing incomes—he would probably answer, those with decreasing incomes. Actually years 1947—1950, the answer was: people with rising incomes. People with decreasing incomes were next and people with stable incomes borrowed the least. This shows us that traditional assumptions about earning and spending are not always reliable. Another traditional assumption is that if people who have money expect prices to go up they will hasten to buy. If they expect prices to go down, they will postpone buying. But research surveys have shown that this is not always true. The expectations of price increases may not stimulate buying. One typical attitude was expressed by the wife of a mechanic in an interview at a time of rising prices. “In a few months,” she said, “we’ll have to pay more for meat and milk; we’ll have less to spend on other things.” Her family had been planning to buy a new car but they postponed this purchase. Furthermore, the rise that has already taken place may be disliked and buyer’s resistance may be produced. This is shown by the following typical comment: “I just don’t pay these prices; they are too high.” The investigations mentioned above were carried o ut in America; condition most helpful to spending appears to be price stability. If prices have been stable and people consider that they are reasonable, they are likely to buy. Thus, it appears that the common business policy of maintaining stable prices is based on a correct understanding of consumer psychology.(1). 英语作业听力:第一篇This is the VOA Special English Education Report This week in our Foreign Student Series; we continue our discussion of college entrance tests in the United States. There are two competing admissions tests at the undergraduate level, the SAT and the ACT. We talked last week about the SA T. The reasoning test involves mathematics and language and includes writing an essay. You can also take SA T subject tests. The ACT is designed to measure what a student learned in high school. There are questions in f our skill areas: math, English, reading and science. The ACT takes just over f our hours. It costs f i f ty-six dollars to take outside the United States. A writing test, whichis not required, adds thirty minutes and f if t een dollars. Details about the ACT can be f ound at . ACT used to be short f or American College Testing, SAT once meant Scholastic Aptitude Test. But today the letters no longer stand f or anything. Most American colleges and universities require applicants f or a bachelor's degree to take one of the tests. Some students take both. The ACT is advertised as "America's most widely accepted college entrance exam." The SA T is advertise d as the one "most widely taken" and, combined with high school grades, "the best predictor of college success." Yet activists have long debated the f airness of these tests and what they really show. The issue has intensif ie d as the test preparation industry has grown. Now, some colleges and universities have stopped requiring the tests.A group called Fair Test has f ound almost eight hundred schools where students may be able to gain admission without the SA T or ACT. The list is at f . For graduate-level programs, applicants of ten have to take the Graduat e Record Examinations, or GRE. The general test measures reasoning, thinking and writing skills. The cost outside the United States is one hundred seventy dollars, except in China, Taiwan and South Korea. The cost there is one hundred ninety-f ive dollars. Students can also take GRE subject tests. Inf ormation about the GRE can be f ound on the Educational Testing Service Web site, . The two major language tests f or non-native English speakers are the TOEFL and the IELTS. These will be our subject next week. And that's the VOA Special English Education Report, written by Nancy Steinbach. Our Foreign Students Series is online at . I'm Steve Ember.第二篇Now, the VOA special English Program words and their stories. Americans use many expressions with the word dog. People at the United States love their dogs and treat them well. They take their dogs f or walks, let them play outside and give them go od f ood and medical care. However dogs without owners to care f or them lead a di ff erent k ind of li f e. The expression to lead a dog’s lif e describes a person who has an unhappy existence. Some people said we live in a dog eat dog world. That means many people are completing f or the same things like good jobs. They say that to be successf ul. A person has to work like a dog, this means they have to work very very hard. Such hard work can make peopl e dog tired and the situation would be even worse if they became sick as a dog. Still people say every dog has its day. This means that every people enjoy a successf ul period during his or her lif e. To be successf ul, people of ten have to learn new skills. Yet some people say that you can never teach an old dog new trick. They believe that older people do not like to learn new things and will not change the way they do things. Some people are compared to dogs in bad ways. People who are unkind or uncaring can be describe d as meaner than a junkyard dog. Junkyard dogs live in places where people throw away things they do not want. Mean dogs are of t en used to guard their property. They bark or attack people who try to enter the property. However, sometimes a person who appears to be mean and threatening is really not so bad. We say his bark is worse than bite. A junkyard is not a f un place f or a dog. Many dogs in the United States sleep in saf e little houses near their owner’s home. This dog houses provide shelter. Yet they can be cold and lonely in the winter. Husbands and wives use this dog house term when they are angry at each other. For example, a woman might get angry at their husband f or coming home late or f orgetting their waiting anniversary. She might tell him that his is in the dog house. She may not treat him nicely until his apologizes. However, the husband may decide they it is the best to leave things alone not create more problems. He might decide to let sleeping dogs lie. Dogs expressions also are use to describe the weather. The dog days of summer are the hottest days of the year. A rainstorm may cool the weather, but we do not want it to rain too hard. We do not want it to rain cats and dogs. This VOA Special English program words and their stories with written by Jill Mos. It’s time f or us to wake up. We need to realize how not to be a target, and also what we can do to prevent an attack from going bad if trouble cannot be avoided. Our biggest defenses against ending up a victim are to be aware. This means being completely aware of what is going on around y ou and what could possibly happen. Armed with this information, you are less likely to walk into dangerous situations, and therefore less likely to end up in trouble. But how do you become aware? What do you need to lookout f or and avoid? When you’re out, wherever it may be…. shopp ing, sightseeing, going to a restaurant, at a party---- you can protect yourself from becoming a victim. When you are out, make sure you keep away, at all costs, from arguments between people, such as couples, friends, strangers and trouble makers. If you are out at night and you hear some raised voices or shouting, mov e away as quickly as possible.Under no account, try to inv estigate what is happening. Even if you see a couple f ighting, be careful if you want to help. The chances that the boy might turn on y ou are very high. As regards a fight between the police and troublemakers, you may think you are giving the law a hand by hopping in, but the police might think you are one of the troublemakers and take you off for questioning. Here, now, are some things y ou should remember-1.Try never to walk alone at night. Do your best to have someone with you. If you are alone, you are an easy target for any group of people. 2.People easily recognize a person who is lost. So stay away from areas you are unfamiliar with.3.If you are out walking, avoid places where there are no street lights. Trouble often takes place in dark alley w ays or culls-de sac.4. Don’t over indulge in alcoholic drinks or talk on your mobile phone while walking alone, late at night. Please go bed and sleep.2.It was only a few weeks after my surgery, and I went to Dr. Belt's office for a checkup. It was just after my first chemotherapy treatment. My scar was still very tender. M y arm was numb underneath. This whole set of unique and weird sensations was like hav ing a new roommate to share the two-bedroom apartment formerly known as my breasts - now lovingly known as "the breast and the chest." As usual, I was taken to an examination room to have my blood drawn, again - a terrifying process for me, since I'm so frightened of needles. I lay down on the examining table. I'd worn a big plaid flannel shirt and a camisole underneath. It was a caref ully thought out costume that I hoped others would regard as a casual wardrobe choice. The plaid camouflaged my new chest, the camisole protected it and the buttons on the shirt made f or easy medical access. Ramona entered the room. Her warm sparkling smile was familiar, and stood out in contrast to my fears. I'd first seen her in the office a few weeks earlier. She wasn't my nurse on that day, but I remember her because she was laughing. She laughed in deep, round and rich tones. I remember wondering what could be so funny behind that medical door. What could she possibly f ind to laugh about at a time like this? So I decided she wasn't serious enough about the whole thing and that I would try to find a nurs e who was. But I was wrong. This day was different. Ramona had taken my blood before. She knew about my fear of needles, and she kindly hid the paraphernalia under a magazine with a bright blue picture of a kitchen being remodeled. As we opened the blouse and dropped the camisole, the catheter on my breast was exposed and the f resh scar on my chest could be seen. She said, "How is your scar healing?" I said, "I think pretty well. I wash around it gently each day." The memory of the shower water hitting my numb chest flashed across my face. She gently reached ov er and ran her hand across the scar, examining the smoothness of the healing skin and looking f or any irregularities. I began to cry gently and quietly. She brought her warm ey es to mine and said, "You haven't touched it yet, have y ou?" And I said, "No." So this wonderf ul, warm woman laid the palm of her golden brown hand on my pale chest and she gently held it there. For a long time. I continued to cry quietly. In soft tones she said, "This is part of your body. This is you. It's okay to touch it." But I couldn't. So she touched it f or me. The scar. The healing wound. And beneath it, she touched my heart. Then Ramona said, "I'll hold your hand while you touch it." So she placed her hand next to mine, and we both were quiet. That was the gift that Ramona gave me. That night as I lay down to sleep, I gently placed my hand on my chest and I left it t here until I dozed off. I knew I wasn't alone. We were all in bed together, metaphorically speaking, my breast, my chest, Ramona's gift and me.单词1.surgery ['sə:dʒəri] 外科手术,外诊He is preparing f or the surgery.2.checkup ['tʃekʌp; 'tʃek.ʌp]检定,健康检查I went to see my doctor and had a checkup yesterday.3.chemotherapy[.keməu'θerəpi] 化学疗法He can use a chemotherapy.4.underneath [.ʌndə'ni:θ]在底部,在下面The coin rolled underneath the piano.5.sensate['senseit] 可感觉的,易察觉的He has a good sensation.6.f lannel ['f lænəl] 说或写兜圈子的话Stop flannelling and give a straight answer!7.camisole ['kæmisəul; 'kæmə.səul]女背心She want to buy a camisole.8.button ['bʌtn; 'bʌtən] 纽扣My skirt buttons at the back.9.tone [təun] 语气,音调,使更强壮Exercise tones up the muscles.10.paraphernalia [.pærəfə'neiliə] 已婚妇女的私人财产All my f ishing paraphernalia is in the car.11.camouf lage ['kæmuf lɑ:ʒ; 'kæmə.f lɑ:ʒ] 伪装,掩饰The soldiers camouflaged themselves with leaves and branches.12.remodeled [ri:'mɔdld]重塑的,改建的This is a remodeled park.13.catheter ['kæθitə] 导尿管,导管He need a catheter.14.numb [nʌm] 麻木的,失去知觉的The shock lef t me numb.15.smoothness ['smu:ðnis] 柔滑,平滑I f elt comf ort able sailing on the smoothness of the sea.16.irregularities The attendant smoothed away the slight irregularities in the running track17.quietily ['kwaiətli] 静静的,悄悄的We sat quietly in the moonshine.18.beneath [bi'ni:θ]在下方,被覆盖The ship sank beneath the waves.19.doze [dəuz] 打瞌睡He doz ed off during the class.20.metaphorically[.metə'fɔrikəli]用比喻的He think that she said has metaphoric meaning.句子1.
