英语动物词汇反映客观世界的同时,沉淀并传达着大量的文化信息与内涵,经历了不断的变化,也丰富了语言表达形式。
动物名称的动词化指的是根据动物本身所具有的形象和特征把名词动词化,以此来认识并说明人的本质特征,寄托和表达人的感情,包含着他们带有感情倾向的褒义、贬义等。
虽然关于名转动词的研究很多,但其称谓却并未达成一致。
本文为方便起见暂时借用名词转动这一术语,从隐喻角度探讨动物名称动词化的喻人用法。
1相关概念解读1.1名词转动及研究概况名词转动是英语中一种活跃的构词法,这一语言现象不仅包括了词类范畴的转移(名词直接变成动词),还存在一个意义的变化过程,对此国内外学术界早有研究。
国外以斯坦福大学的EveVClark和HerbertHClark最著名,他们联名发表的“WhenNounsSurfaceasVerbs”深入探讨了名词转动的实质。
在他们所研究的实例中,有一些已经收入了英语词典,成为固定词汇[1]。
此外,Quirk等人讨论过名词转动与原生名词的语意关系,把他们分成了七种类型[2]。
国内的研究主要有徐盛桓的《论英语名动词的转化》,徐提出了一个新理论,它的核心称为“一个基础和两个过程”,即一个语意基础和两个过程———语法过程和语意过程,具体来讲就是:名词和动词分别都可以用来表示动作和物体,这是名动转化的语意基础;这两个过程执行着以语意功能对语法功能的补偿[3]。
