Peter, tell us about your success.Peter Parks: Thanks very much for inviting me here to talk about the shop and the things we sell. First I should say that the reason I opened the shop was not really to make money. It was to be around the cartoon books and magazines which have been a central part of my life since I was a young boy. It has been great to become so successful, but it wasn’t something which I expected. I started out selling a number of mainly new cartoon books and magazines, but bit by bit I started to find older copies that collectors were looking for. To start with it was just Superman, Batman and Spiderman, but later I found that customers were looking for other cartoon books and magazines, too, so I started to look for them when I went to cartoon book and magazine fairs. Soon the business was doing really well. I think the best thing about the work is not the money, though. It’s still that I can spend my working day doing something that I really enjoy.Key:1. b2. a3. b4. c5. bG:Tapescript:Mary: Here we are, Mingming. I’m interested in old ones.Mary: There are so many books here. I don’t think we’ll be able to find anything.Mingming: Oh, it’s great fun once you start looking, Mary. There are all sorts of interesting things.Mary: Anyway, it’s an experience. Oh, look. Here’s an old Disney cartoon book about a princess.Mingming: That’s not really what I’m looking for.Mary: Not you maybe, but I know someone who’d like it. It’s Cathy’s favourite story. I’d like to buy it for her.Mingming: Well, see how much you can get it for. Don’t pay more than half the amount they tell you at first.Mary: Right.Mingming: I’ll be over there at the next place.Mary: See you in a bit then.(20 minutes later)Mingming: How did it go?Mary: I got it.Mingming: How much?Mary: Five yuan.Mingming: Not bad.Mary: How about you?Mingming: I’ve been lucky, too. So we’ve both been successful.Key:1. b2. b3. b4. c5. aH:Tapescript:Interviewer: Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome Yazi who’s here to talk to us about the history of manga. Manga is the name used for Japanese cartons. In Chinese these are known as manhua.Yazi: Thank you. First of all, let me say that cartoons have been used in one way or another in Japan for nearly 1,000 years, but modern manga started about 60 years ago. A medical student, Osamu Tezuka, wrote a cartoon book version which sold nearly half a million copies. This type of cartoon became very popular with children. First it was just children who read the books. When they grew up, they still wanted to read them, but they didn’t want children’s stories. By the 1960s these children were at university and soon manga were being written for them. In the 1980s, manga television programmes were being made and now there are all kinds of manga: TV, films, story books, magazines and even school and university text books. Actually, though, most manga are first made as a serial-only 20 or 30 pages appear at a time, some every week and others every month. Some series last for years. The popularity of manga has spread here to China and you can buy cartoon books and magazines and watch Chinese manga-style TV programmes everywhere. I expect that many of you enjoy them, too.Key:3. √4. √ 6. √。
