本句是由where引导的特殊疑问句。
where adv.“(疑问副词)在哪里”，用来引导特殊疑问句，对某人或某物所在的位置(地点)进行提问。
回答时，要根据具体情况作答。

Where are the pencils？铅笔在哪里？

本句是含有主系表结构的简单句。
they 是主语，are是系动词，介词短语on the sofa作表语。
on prep. “在……上面”，强调某物在另一物的表面上。

本句是一个否定陈述句。
当对对方的问题自己不清楚，不理解，或者不明白的时候，常常使用这个句子。
使用时，习惯在前面加上“sorry”或“I’m sorry”，这样显得礼貌、客气。
其中I是主语，don’t know是谓语。
do是助动词，本身无意义，和not构成
否定，缩写为don
