加拿大的汤姆森公司于2008年4月收购英国路透社后，两家公司合并成为汤森路透集团。

专利统计简报2010年第19期（总第95期）国家知识产权局规划发展司 2010年11月11日汤森路透预计：2011年中国专利申请量将居世界首位【摘要】近日Thomson Reuters发布了一份关于中国专利活动的研究报告，报告预计：在德温特专利数据库中，中国“首次专利”申请数量将在2010年超过美国，专利申请总量将在2011年超过日本和美国，居世界领先地位。
报告对于中国政府政策做出了积极评价，主要观点包括：中国专利质量不断提高，向外申请专利数量逐步增长，中国经济由农业主导向高科技主导转型是导致专利申请量激增的根本推动因素。
同时报告对于实用新型专利制度在中国得到广泛应用，促进专利总量增长给予了充分肯定。
全球知名的专业信息服务提供商汤森路透（Thomson Reuters）最近发布了一项名为《专利在中国：中国创新活动的现状与未来（第二版）》的研究报告。
报告使用2003至2009年间，德温特世界专利索引数据库中美、日、中、欧、韩五局专利数据1，对五局专利申请总量以及“首次专利申请”量2的平均增长率进行计算，同时对2010年至2014年间的趋势作出预测。
报告预计：德温特专利数据库中的中国1 德温特专利数据包括发明专利和实用新型，不含外观设计。
2 “首次专利申请”是指首先在某个地区寻求保护的专利。
由于申请人一般倾向于首先在发明产生的国家寻求保护，因此其也可以作为衡量自主创新的一个指标。
— 1 —“首次专利”申请数量将在2010年超过美国，专利申请总量将在2011年超过日本和美国，居世界领先地位。
相关数据显示：近年来，中国专利申请增长速度遥遥领先。
2005年中国便已经超过了欧洲和韩国，位居第三（图1）。
另一方面，中国“首次专利申请”的增长速度也极为迅猛，2006年超过欧洲、2009年直逼美日（图2）。
