comparisonandcontrast例文Comparison and Contrast essaysModel one: one-side-at-a-time essay:Contrast Between Backpacking or Staying in HotelsTraveling is one of the favorite hobbies almost all people have. There are several ways for traveling around the world, and they all include some good things and some bad things. Backpacking and staying in hotels are two of the most common ways of traveling. That’s why they are used by most peopl e. The major differences that could be discussed between these two ways of traveling are the costs, the safety of the staying, and the availability of plans.Backpacking has been used by teenagers for a long time, and it has become really famous among youn g people who don’t have a lot of money for traveling. By backpacking people could save a lot of money and travel with less money than what they would need for paying a hotel (the cost). As the travelers will need to sleep in a hotel, there will always be the issue of insecurity, as any kind of people could enter and sleep in a hotel (safety of the staying). Hotels are not always available as there are a lot of people who use them, so change of plans will always be a possibility in this way of traveling. People who rely on backpacking for their trips should always have a backup plan. (the availability of plans)Hotels are one of the most comfortable ways of traveling, but only if you have enough money. This way of traveling is mostly used by families and people who are wealthy enough to pay for good hotels (the cost). By staying at a hotel people will spend more money than they would spend in a hotel; of coursea hotel will provide a high level of security to the traveler (safety of the staying). To stay at most hotels, you need reservations, and once you have them you can rely on a place to sleep every night. In this way of traveling no backup plan is needed. (the availability of plans)The two possibilities discussed above are really good; everything depends on the economic possibilities of every person. Personally I recommend staying at hotels even if they do not have an excellent quality because the services you get in exchange for your money could be the difference between having a good trip or a perfect mess.Model Two: point-by-point essayCows and WhalesThere are some things that happen to cows and whales. One of the things, both cows and whales are eaten by people in some countries as edible meat. Another thing, although they are living in different places like ocean and land, they have their own lives. It seems that cows and whales are in a same situation. But there are some differences that could be compared. First, many cows are slaughtered everyday. On the other hand, whales are protected by national law recently. Second, cows are important provisions for all over the world. However, whales are important edible animals only in a few countries. Finally, there is the biggest difference between cows and whales. It is that whales are free in the huge ocean until caught by people, and cows will be grown up in the field by the people to eat.The first difference between cows and whales is that cows are the most popular edible meat all over the world. Therefore, many cows are butchered everyday. Of course, there are several reasons that people use cows to their provisions. On one hand, cows are easy for farmers to breed, and they are not as clever as other animals. On the other hand, whales have been protected by a law. (The UnitedNations Convention on the Law of the Sea) Therefore, every whaler has been limited in number to catch the whales recently. The reason of this law is whales are not easy to breed as cows. And they are such clever animals more than any other kind of animal. The second difference is that cows are important provisions all over the world. Almost all countries use beef as their main dish. Therefore, it is nothing wound and gives any impression to us to slaughter cows. But whales have been used as edible meat in a few countries like small islander countries. Therefore, for the people who are living in big countries, to slaughter the whales look like violence activity and wounded hunting. The final difference is the biggest difference between cows and whales. Cows are raised by farmers in the fields that are surrounded by fences. They don't have any future. And they have to wait their slaughter in the field. On the other hand, whales are free in a huge ocean. They can swim and travel wherever they want. Even though, they are caught by people, other whales have a future. They don't need to wait their slaughter. They have their lives and freedom until caught by people. In conclusion, there are something that happens to cows and whales. Both cows and whales are eaten by people as edible meat. Some people said that it is so poor for whale to be caught by whaler. But, how about cows? Sometimes cows and whales are both on the same situations. However, practically both cows and whales are completely opposite situations and different treatment.。

用比较对比的方法写一篇英文作文

用比较对比的方法写一篇英文作文Comparison and ContrastWhen it comes to writing an essay, one of the most effective ways to organize your thoughts and present your ideas is through comparison and contrast. This method allows you to highlight the similarities and differences between two or more subjects, helping the reader to better understand the complexity of the topic at hand.In a comparison and contrast essay, it is important to first identify the subjects that you will be comparing and contrasting. These could be anything from two different works of literature, two historical events, two scientific theories, or even two products on the market. Once you have identified your subjects, you can then start to brainstorm the similarities and differences between them. One way to organize your essay is to use a point-by-point structure. In this format, you would first introduce the subjects you are comparing and contrasting, providing a brief overview of each. You would then go on to discuss one point of comparison or contrast at a time, providing evidence and examples to support your arguments. This allows for a clear and organizedpresentation of your ideas, making it easier for the reader to follow along.Another way to structure a comparison and contrast essay is to use a block format. In this format, you would first discuss all the similarities between the subjects, followed by a discussion of all the differences. This format allows for a more in-depth analysis of each subject, as you can focus on each aspect individually before moving on to the next.No matter which format you choose, it is important to remember to include a clear thesis statement at the beginning of your essay. This statement should outline the main point of comparison or contrast that you will be discussing, helping to guide your reader through your argument. In conclusion, using comparison and contrast in your writing can be a powerful tool for organizing your ideas and presenting them in a clear and concise manner. By identifying the similarities and differences between your subjects and presenting them in a logical and organized way, you can help your reader to better understand the complexities of the topic at hand. So next time you are writing an essay, consider using comparison and contrast to make your argument more compelling and effective.。

COMPARISON AND CONTRAST ESSAY[1]

COMPARISON AND CONTRAST ESSAY[1]

Comparison and Contrast EssayDefinition:In this kind of essay, the aim is to show the similarities and differences of two items, two people, two countries, or how something or someone has changed. When comparing two things, we focus more on the similarities though we may mention the differences shortly. When contrasting two things, we point out the differences between them. The most important point to consider while planning a comparison and contrast essay is choosing comparable items.e.g. Middle East Technical University and Bogazici University. We have to make sure that these two items have enough points to be compared. After writing the comparable points as a list,•location,•size,•reputation,•specialty,•social clubs,•sports facilities,we have to eliminate some of them and choose 2-3 from the list that can lead to full supported paragraphs.•location•size•specialtyOrganization:Two patterns of organization are possible:1. Point-by-PointIn this pattern, the organization is as follows:thesis statement: METU and BOUN are Turkey's two veryprestigious universities with some differences in theirspecialties, facilities, and locations.I. specialtyA. METUB. BOUNII. facilityA. METUB. BOUNIII. locationA. METUB. BOUNFor each of the points of comparison, we compare andcontrast the two items.2. Block (All of One / All of the Other)In this pattern, the two items to be compared andcontrasted form two separate paragraphs. In eachparagraph the points of comparison are discussed in thesame order, as in the following organization:thesis statement: METU and BOUN are Turkey's two veryprestigious universities with some differences in theirspecialties, facilities, and locations.I. BOUNA. specialtyB. facilityC. locationII. METUA. specialtyB. facilityC. locationThis pattern is mostly used when the amount ofinformation about the items is limited. Also some topics(e.g. Your life before and after the divorce of your parents)lend themselves to block type organization.Language:The two patterns differ in terms of language as well. While pattern 2 is quite straightforward, pattern 1 requires more transitions but the end product is more understandable for the reader. Some transitions that can be used for showing similarity:similar to, similarlylikeboth ... and ...in additionmoreoverbesideslikewisein the same waySome transitions indicating difference:different fromin contrast tocompared withunlikebut, howeveron the other handconverselyin contrastDo not forget that using transitions enables the piece of writing to be coherent; it is easier for the reader to follow our ideas whentransitions are used to link them together. However, overuse of transitions causes a traffic jam and should be avoided. We should be using transitions sparingly (only when necessary).Sample comparison contrast essay:METU and Bogazici UniversityAlmost all high school students who would like to further their academic lives in the university search for information about the various universities of Turkey. Among many universities in Turkey, two of them are the most popular: Middle East Technical University and Bogazici University. They are considered the best. However, since both cannot be THE BEST, their specialties, facilities and locations need to be examined in detail to be able to choose the most suitable university for one's education life. One of the areas that one should investigate is the specialties of the two universities. METU is a comparatively new university (1956). Its aim was to contribute to the development of Turkey and Middle East countries and especially to train people so as to create a skilled workforce in the fields of natural and social sciences. The first academic program to start education was the Department of Architecture. It was followed by the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Today, there are 37 undergraduate programs in five faculties of METU. Bogazici University, on the other hand, is a very old university (1863). Its first name was Robert College. It got its present name in 1971. It started education by giving Bachelor of Arts degree.Engineering building was built later (1912). Today, Bogazici is known to graduate students who have strong social and business skills. The second point we would like to compare is their facilities. METU is widely recognized with its cultural and intellectual facilities. The campus houses pioneers of some clubs such as mountaineering and scuba diving clubs, which are only two of a total of 25 different social clubs that students can choose. There is an alumni society. There are two gymnasiums, 7 tennis courts, a closed and an open swimming pool. However, the campus is far from the city center; therefore, there are not many places to eat at around the campus. METU has a very good library with hard and electronic copies of many books and journals. Bogazici also has a very good library, a swimming pool, a gymnasium and an alumni society that offers many extra-curricular courses, such as fitness, yoga, cooking courses. There are canteens on campus. However, unlike METU, Bogazici is situated in Etiler and it is close to Bebek, places popular with young people and there are a lot of places to eat around the campus. This brings us to the third point we would like to compare; the campus. The two campuses are quite different from each other. Bogazici campus is quite old; dates back to the second half of 19th century. The buildings are very old. Though they are restored from time to time, they have historical value and their facades cannot be changed. The campus is full of old trees and it has an awesome view of the Bosphorus. The campus is quite large. However, new buildings cannot be added so two new campuses have been constructed. One is called the North Campus and is quite close to the main campus. The other is in Kilyos, 40 km away. There are shuttle busses for both campuses. METU, on the other hand, is modern looking with concrete and red brick buildings. The campus is large enough to allow construction of new buildings. With many green areas where students can meet and talk, it has a more academic atmosphere. As a conclusion, we can say that METU dwells more on the technical departments and a closed campus life which enables the students to concentrate on their courses more. On the other hand, Bogazici is very good at social sciences and economics departments and has every facility to create a cultural and intellectual environment for the student. One should evaluate one’s priorities before making such a choice.__________________________________________________ Written by Oya Ozagac, September 2004Copyright @ 2006 Bogazici University SFL。

Both have their merits and shortcomings.Living in the city has a great many advantages. First, you can enjoy various kinds of foods, both foreign and domestic. Second, there are more cultural activities in the city –you can go to the concert, the theatre, the movies or the disco club after a day’s hard work. But city life has many problems, too. The overcrowded population, traffic jam, industrial pollution, and the lack of understanding between people may result in disease and unhappiness. Living in the country, however, you can watch the magnificent sunrise and sunset and listen to the bird singing in the tree.If you want, you can certainly have a huge garden when a small green space seems a luxury in the city. In the country, you don’t have so mucn worries. You can enjoy the pleasure of work by planting seeds in the earth and watching them grow into flowers and finally into fruits or food. But rural life may not be that perfect. Things are going so slowly that sometimes you may feel that you are absolute left behind in some remote corners of the world. You may again miss the parties, friends and movies in the city.Like anything else, country life and city life have their advantages and disadvantages. The best solution may be that you enjoy pleasures of both lives and get rid of their inconveniences.范文二:Middle School Life and College LifeThere are many differences between middle school and the college.First,in middle school,we have to listen to what the teacher says in class, to understand the content of the text. Comparison & Contrast essay

Comparison & Contrast essay
My hometown and my college town have several things in common. First, both are small rural communities. For example, my hometown, Kent, has a population of only about 10,000 people. Similarly, my college town, Portland, consists of about 11,000 local residents. This population swells to 15,000 people when the college students are attending classes. A second way in which these two towns are similar is that they are both located in rural areas. Kent is surrounded by many acres of farmland which is devoted mainly to growing corn and soybeans. In the same way, Portland lies in the center of farmland which is used to raise pigs and cattle. Thirdly, these towns are similar in that they contain college campuses. Kent, for example, is home to Kent College, which is famous for its Agricultural Economics program as well as for its annual Flower Festival. Likewise, the town of Portland boasts the beautiful campus of Stanton College, which is well known for its Agricultural Engineering department and also for its yearly Invention Contest.

Ivan/Wang Yifan & Romeo/Yu BingfuENG1300Compare/Contrast EssayTwo Old WomenThere are two old women’s stories, a fake old lady and a death old lady, and do you want to know what’s similarity or what’ s difference between them? When comparing “Old Before Her Time” and “From The Way To Rainy Mountain”, it can be clearly identified that both of them have well-organized structures and brilliant descriptions, but differ greatly in content and emotion. In “Old Before Her Time”, which written by Katherine Barrett, the protagonist Patty, a industrial designer, wanted to find out the needs of the elderly so she made herself up which makes her looked very old. And during May 1979 to September 1981, she learned seven lessons from seven sufferings. First suffering, Columbus, Pat find she was ignored and counted out which she had never experienced when she stood alone in the middle of a crowd of young professionals, then she learned that the old are often ignored; Second suffering, New York City, she couldn’t run away when she was attacked, and she learned the old often couldn’t afford to move and became unsafe; Third suffering, New York City, she risked a terrible fall when she get up and down stairs, or on and off bus, and she learned old people treat with no mercy of every barrier or rude person you encountered; Fourth suffering, Florida, she was impressed when she heard a women saying that she wouldn’t tell her children their father beat her because she didn’t want to disillusion them, and Pat learned even afifty-year-old marriage wa sn’t necessarily a good one; Fifth suffering, Florida, she was rudely hit and laughed by four little boys when she tottering down the side walk, and she learned social class affected every aspect of an older person; Sixth suffering, New York City, Pat felt lack of hugging and men when she was wasting time at benches, and she learned that you never grow old emotionally and you always need to feel love; Seventh suffering, New York City, Pat had her first date with a thin gentleman since her marriage ended and she learned that life does go on as long as you’re flexible and open to change. Finally, after she was back to living the live of a single thirty-year old, she realized that though people’s bodies age, inside they are really no different than when they were young.Likewise, “From The Way To Rainy Mountain”, which written by Scott Momaday, narrated a series of stories about author’s grandmother and their nation the Kiowas when he climbed the Rainy Mountain to visit his grandmother’s grave. First, when he arrived, he remember grandmother born when her nation the Kiowas surrendered to the soldiers at Fort Sill and imprisoned in the old stone corral in order to save themselves after the last great moment of their history, so she was exempted from high gray walls and realized the harm and damage of defeat. What’s more, he mentioned that the ancient Kiowas were hunters in North America and then they entered upon the Southern Plains they had transformed. Then he also review grandmother’s adult ag e at Yellowstone where she lived out her long life. The Kiowas reckoned their stature by the distance they could see, and they were bent and blind in the wilderness. Descending eastward, the Kiowas paused on their way and came tothe plains where they must change their lives. Finally, he remembered her old age. He describes some postures that were peculiar to her which constructed a mercy and unique figure. And it’s end with a peaceful view about the rooms where grandmother once lived and an beautiful scenery. Thus, s tructure is a wonderful similarity between “Old Before Her Time” and “From The Way To Rainy Mountain”. Obviously, both essays followed time logic and developed by different places, “Old Before Her Time” narrated Patty’s seven sufferings from May 1979 to September 1981, just as “From The Way To Rainy Mountain” narrated grandmother’s all live and the Kiowas’s history, very clear, straight-forward and flexible, so their structures both were familiar in general.Besides the excellent well-organized structures, there are some brilliant descriptions existing in the two essays. Firstly, in order to make the descriptions vivid, both of the two essays use figurative language. Like Momaday’s writing, “Her long, black hair, always drawn and braided in the day, lay upon her shoulders and against her breasts like a shawl,” he uses figurative language to draw the image of his grandmother and impress us deeply. Correspondingly, when Barrett writes, “Life is like a hard closed gate for the elderly, what’s the elderly should do is to come and open it,” We can get a vivid impression about the tough life for the elderly. What’s more, the two essays both reveal the characters through their action. In Barrett’s essay, she records a set of reactions of the major character when she gets the ignorance and discrimination. She successfully reveals the character’s sadness and embarrassment using the action. Similarly, Momaday uses the action to describe his grandmother aswell. In his description, he shows how his grandmother leads the life in the Rainy Mountain. Using describing what his grandmother does, he reveals his grandmother’s personality and life pursuit. Thus, both two essays use figurative language and record of the characters’ action so that to have brilliant descriptions.Rather than the similarities in writing skills of the two essays, obvious differences could be found in content and emotion. Barrett’s essay “Old Before Her Time” records a strange real journey. During this journey, the character named patty makes herself up as an old woman. She travels around the world with the special make-up. In the essay, the author aims to records all the facts and details about people’s reactions when meeting such an old woman. Conversely, Momaday’s essay “From The Way To Rainy Mountain”doesn’t record a set of experience about the strange journey. Instead, his essay presents his personal trip when he returns to Rainy Mountain where his grandmother lived all her life. Unlike Barrett’s essay recording quantities of facts, Momaday adds some his memory and history of Rainy Mountain to the essay. When referring to the emotion, Barratt desires to use her records of the special journey to show the discrimination about the elderly. Furthermore, the deeper emotion is that the author aims to use her essay to evoke or raise people’s awareness that the youth should respect the elderly without any discrimination. Unlike Barrett’s emotion and purpose, Momaday wants to show his personal feelings and emotion in his essay. Using some memory about his grandmother’s life in Rainy Mountain and some history about Rainy Mountain, naturally, Momaday expresses his miss to his grandmother and previous life in Rainy Mountain. Deeply, he reveals his sincere loveto his grandmother and Rainy Mountain. In conclusion, the two excellent essays both use time line to organize the essay and both use figurative language and record of the character’s action to have brilliant descriptions. However, two essays aim to convey different meanings, though they both have outstanding writing skills .In other words, it can be got a lot of similarities when reading as writers to analyze the writing skills. On the contrary, when reading as readers, it can be got different content and emotion from the two essays. Thus, when reading as a reader, Momaday’s essay is better. Comparing with Barrett’s essay, his essay has a stronger emotion, which can lead to a lasting impression to its readers.。
