Exquisite plot, wry humor and twist ending dominate his works. Those surprising but logical endings and article’s style are the most brilliant in all of the highlights. This thesis mainly analyses O. Henry’s surprising but logical endings and style of his famous works such as The Gift of the Magi , The Last Leaf an and The Cop and the Anthem. These O. Henry-style endings impress readers ,and at the same time ,help him express his ideas completely and vividly. So this thesis mainly analyses how O.Henry set the plot to achieve the desired ending effect, and how the twist ending help idea-expression.Key Words: artistic styles, O. Henry-style ending, humanity; social realityChapter1 IntroductionO·Henry is commonly associated with the short story and the masterful ironic “O·Henry Twist”. A prolific writer, O·Henry wrote most often about New York City, where he spent his later years, He has been called “the American De Maupassant”.Years of hardships, vagrancy and prison supplied O·Henry with abundant material for writing. The tragedy in his own life —the bad luck that seemed to bind him —had taught him a chivalrous tenderness for the unlucky, a sympathetic understanding of the underdogs, and this compassion of his is evident in most of his short stories. O·Henry’s stories about New York City —the best of which are included in The Four Million—are his most famous. His works in.The Four Billionaire full of humor. His stories are amusing, flippant, flat and filled with irony and sentiment. Drawing directly on his experiences, he combined realism with a world of his own. Commonly recurring themes in O·Henry’s short stories are those of deception, mistaken identity, the effect of coincidence, the inexorable nature of fate, and the resolution of seemingly insurmountable difficulties separating two love it.Over recent hundreds of years, works of O·Henry’s have been published for several editions, and always attracting a great number of readers. O·Henry‟s writing is seen as straightforward and simple, written in plain language. His stories may rely on a sameness of plot, but the sharp, unexpected twist at the end is still his distinctive trademark today.(田2005:5)As readers, we like O·Henry’s stories very much because we can get much fun from them. Lively characters, humorous style, and the surprising ending which leave us endless thinking, are the main factors to attract and strike us.Chapter 2 O. Henry ‘s article style--humor2.1 O. Henry ‘s article styleO. Henry good at describing the United States in particular people living in New York. His novel, witty language, the result is often surprising; because of the many descriptions of the characters and full of life, as the "Encyclopedia of American life with humor." There are representative collection of short stories, "King and cabbage", "4,000,000" and "the fate of the road." Some of the famous, such as "love at the expense" and "Police and the Hymn," "rent furnished rooms" and "The Gift of the Magi" and "the last piece of rattan leaf" to make his reputation in the world. He is a writer with a unique style, humorous works, humorous wit, vivid descriptions, concise text. Vivid description of things from the profound understanding and extensive knowledge. He was good to observe things and the accumulation of knowledge. Good at capturing life Ironically, while the wealth to the philosophy of the dramatic scenes from the grasp of the subtle characteristics of the image using the language Painted, so that the people of flesh and blood, into the Xu-xu Health.2.2 HumorO. Henry once wrote: "the nature of my jokes is amiable, irony, and never make someone angry." This is his opinion of his humor, his satire, but again not ironic.he is on the basis of goodwill, and often contain the true meaning of life in accessible short stories . And another effect is that this kind of humor played down the tragic role, so readers are more likely to accept. In addition to the humorous irony, O. Henry is good at capturing the ironic and aboundin life philosophy of dramatic scene, with the characteristics of writing outline of cartoon characters, the plot of the chrono set at the same time, the ending with unexpected knot,All this make readers in dismay want to find the deep connotation of the story, make the reader have to exclamation story of fair and reasonable, idea of exquisite. In addition to unxepecting ending ,the sequence in the novel text became O. Henry another feature of the nove.In O’Henry’s short story “The Cop and the Anthem”, he ma kes use of the vocabulary mistake and hyperbole not only endowing figures with fresh image but also obtaining definite humorous effect. It’s a concrete display of the comedic writing style and at the same time it hints at the tragic fate of the protagonist. There is such a paragraph in the article:But as Soapy set foot inside the restaurant d o o r the head waiter’s eye fell upon his frayed trousers and decadent shoes. Strong and ready hands turned him a b o u t and conveyed him in silence and haste to the sidewalk and averted the ignoble fate of the menaced mallard.Soapy’s f irst “long for being arrested” plan i s to eat extravagantly in a luxurious restaurant—“a roast duck is almost enough!” But as he sets foot inside the restaurant door, the head waiter’s eye falls upon h i s“decadent shoes”. Decadent is always used to d e s c r i b e life style or consciousness concept. The author uses it to describe Soapy’s broken shoes and exaggerates the actuality of that broken shoe to a laughable extent. Then the author also uses the humorous remarks “turn round that r o a s t duck’s nearly being killed fate “to indicate Soapy’s hope “to eat gratis is vanished.”Chapter3 Unique O-style ending methodO. Henry's trademark is the surprising ending that each of his stories contains. He sets a story moving in one direction, and just when the reader is convinced of the general direction of the narrative, the story will be completely reversed. This kind of expected but reasonable ending which called O.Henry’s ending may be a litt le sorrowful but it still gives the readers some hope, which is so-called “O.Henry’s humor(smile with tears)”And if we look back to the total story, the ending seems logical and plausible. As a “plot-maker”, and designer of incident, he is an amazing geniu s. No one can do better than him to holds the reader in “suspense”More than that, the reader scarcely knows that he is suspended until the very close of the story. Just as turns on the lights and the whole tale is revealed in its entirety. He uses this device of dramatic and humorous effect in the short story collection The Four Million which including “The Gift of the Magi ”, and “The Cop and the Anthem”“the Service of Love”“The last Leaf.”He often stresses on something important but not the most importan t in his works. The most important part always seems to write incidentally, which been the most circumscriptive reader may if more it.When the stories end in a totally unexpected but reasonable way ,we can do nothing but cheer for O.Henry’s literary talent.3.1 Improbable Coincidence (The Gift of the Magi)The novel“The Gift of the Magi” is about a young couple that is short of money but desperately wants to buy each other Christmas gifts. Unknown to Jim, Della sells her most valuable possession, her beautiful hair, in order to buy platinum as the chain for Jim's watch; unknown to Della, Jim sells his most valuable possession, his watch, to buy jeweled combs for Della's hair. In the end ,both gifts became useless——short-haired Della got a comb andJim got a chain for an already-sold watch. What a surprising coincidence! However, when we look back, we can find that O.Henry had already given us some suggestions.”Now, there were two possessions of the James Dillingham Youngs in which they both took a mighty pride. One was Jim’s gold watch that had been his father’s and his grandfather’s. The other was Della’s hair.” This description is related to how they got the money for gifts and what they bought for each other. The author used a casual and vague tone deliberately so that few people would think over its meaning before seeing the ending. So the ending turns out to be unexpected but reasonable. This coincidence is filled with complex emotions. People feel touched by the long lasting true love between the young couple and at the same time ,pity for them for their “unwise” gifts and their cruel bitter life.Though confronted with cruel reality and dull daily routine, Della and Jim can never change their eagerness toward love. To them the most valuable material possession is so slight and insignificant ,when compared with the spiritual possession of love romance.Perhaps the gifts were "unwise" as the author says, but, as he further writes, "let it be said that of all who give gifts, these two were the wisest.”In Th e Gift of the Magi , we feel so pity that Della has her precious long hair cut. But to our surprise ,Jim has sold the watch to buy the jeweled tortoise-shell combs for her wife’s hair. O.Henry does not end on the note of irony and surprise but gives to what he calls his uneventful coincidence of two foolish children the appearance of a little parable with a significant meaning. The magi , he reminds the reader ,were wise men who brought gifts to the Christ child. As for Jim and Della, the are the magi. This is the ending of the story with O.Henry’s own style.Chapter4 The Main Theme of O’Henry’s WorksIn his works, O.Henry presents the panorama of the American people to readers with ironic and humorous tone. O.Henry is sympathetic with the poor; he praises the human virtues and denounces human defeats. Humanity, as the eternal theme of O.Henry’s works, endows his works with perpetual artistic charm. Human being has many virtues from ancient times to the present. They are kind, brave, honest, hard-working, polite, thrifty, generous, and hospitable and so on. Some people pay a great deal in order to maintain these virtues, they sacrifice their own happiness even life for the lofty love and friendship; they help others without asking for rewards and regard it as a pleasure; they give up their own treasure and chance to others etc. Such people bring love and fine things to the world; they are the ones who endow the world with light and hope.Human beings have many defects, too. Sometimes t h e y are lazy, rapacious, gluttonous, officious, vain, arrogant, shameless, cowardly, impetuous etc. They benefit themselves at the expense of others, they never show mercy and sympathy to the poor in order to make money, they realize their own aims by hook or by crook etc. Their evil deeds make the world vicious. By exposing the human defects and the dark sides of the world, O.Henry wants to awaken p e o p l e’s conscience and deepest desire for all good things, so that people can use their efforts to save and cleanse the whole world.O. Henry creates a short stories which he could dominate the world , and the world as a whole is with light grey. O. Henry won't go to describe the upper-class life :a luxury and dissipation life.In contrary, he makes his writing focuse on a nobody wholives in the small world. From this world , O. Henry have created the world according to his own idea, in which expresses his sympathy as well as hate, reveals a "law of the jungle" in a capitalist society orthe rule of "the great fish eat the small one". All this, we can visit O. Henry's world from the point of O. Henry's works .Besides social deformities, O. Henry didn't forget to find a unique legend in that society. In a corner of the world, there are blooming love, friendship, lofty flowers with a spirit of sacrifice , beautiful soul and divine emotion interweaves the bright side of another society. This is mainly can be found in the part of his representative works. In The Gift of the Magi ,husband and wife be able to give up the things they proud - long hair and watch, for the Christmas gifts. Although ultimately failed to achieve, but the flower of love is brightly blossoming. For example:But on an unusually quiet corner Soapy came to a standstill. Here was an old church, quaint and rambling and gabled. Through one violet-stained window a soft light glowed, where, no doubt, the organist loitered over the keys, making sure of his mastery of the coming Sabbath anthem. For there drifted out to Soapy’s ears sweet music tha t caught and held him transfixed against the convolutions of the iron fench.<The Cop and the Anthem> The hymn of music brought homeless to restart the courage of life, which reflects the virtuous sideof societyChapter 5 ConclusionTotally speaking, in O. Henry’s works, the events of some short stories are arranged in the specific order which exceed reader’s normal expectation to the arrangement of those events in his works, make the ending unpredictable and strange. O. Henry deliberately designs the little tricks with words, for he is a master of language and not its slave. These unexpected but reasonable endings, in many conditions ,are the mos t remarkable parts in the novel. They also engage something profound in the human psyche and reflect social reality in that age . device that would become identified with his name. Wit, irony, cleverness, individuality and local color are also traditional earmarks of the typical O’Henry story. In addition, his warmth of human understanding and sympathy with the “underdog” give many of his stories poignancy. In memory of his great contribution to American literature, American literary circles set up Henry Award in 1918.References[1] Medrick, Fred. An introduction to American literature[M]. A Brief Analysis of the Writing Part of CET4-6页word资料

A Brief Analysis of the Writing Part of CET4【Abstract】The College English Test Band 4(CET4), is a nationwide English proficiency test, the difficulty level of this test various from student to student. However, the pass rate of CET4 in not high in China. This essay will analyze the writing part of CET4 from the topic choosing, the difficulty level, evaluation standard and whether the evaluation is reasonable or not.1. IntroductionThe main purpose of learning a foreign language is to communicate. In China, an important method to communication in English is writing. Therefore, the ability of learners to read and write is particularly important. So, writing is an important part in English tests, and the ability to write can have a big impact on the overall performance in the exam. It is important to understand the nature of writing activities, the methods of testing and the significance of writing.2. The nature of writingIn 1960s, there are two kinds of definition of writing, one is results-oriented, the other is process-oriented.In early 1960,the results-oriented teaching method is popular, teachers using this teaching method to teach writing always pay more attention to students’ imitative ability. They like to give students an example, and then introduce the structure, words usage, grammar and so onto students. After that, students will be given a new topic, and imitate to write a composition by what they learned from the example. However, as for the Process-oriented approach argue that writing activities not only includes language skills and discourse competence, but also includes students’ interest and familiarityto the given topic, excepts that, the culture will also have some impact on students performance in their writing activities. The process-oriented approach disagree that it is definitely wrong that just let students imitate others’ works, it includes many social and psychological factors. Until 1970s, process-oriented teaching method has become very popular for reforming English writing teaching. This teaching method focus on how to choose the writing topic, how to arrange the writing content, and how to adjust the words according to the relationship between the writer and the reader. Silva(1980: 18) thinks this teaching method is better than the results-oriented teaching method, because it is a kindof teaching method which involves the construction of knowledge, and the dissemination of knowledge, it can also construct a purposeful and efficient communication between writers and readers.3. The meaning of analyzing China’s writing testsAs it is mentioned above, In China, an important method tocommunication in English is writing, and writing is an important part in all language tests. Therefore, it is very important to analyze the writing part from the topic choosing, the difficulty level, evaluation standard and whether the evaluation is reasonable or not in Chinese English tests. It can help both the teacher and researcher to have a further study to how to design a more appropriate writing task.4. Information about CET4College English test band 4 is a large-scale standardized test and national education examination which is designed to satisfy the education requirement and it is organized by the ministry of education. Since January 2005, it have been held twice a year, and its purpose is to test college students’ English ability, and its evaluation is objective and accurate. The test has four parts, listening, reading, cloze, matching tasks and translation, and the score is 710, students can pass the test with 425.The college English test provides an objective description of the English level of our college students. Due to the extensive use of modern education statistical methods in the college English test, the scores are treated with equivalent value and unchanged.5. The writing part of CET4The writing part of CET4 accounted for all of the 15%.Example(2015.12): Part I: Writing (30 minutes)For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write an essay commenting on the saying “Learning is a daily experience and lifetime mission.”You can cite examples to illustrate the importance of lifelong learning. You should write at least 120 words but no more than180words.6. A Brief Analysis of the Writing Part of CET4“As Heaton(2000: 135) divided the writing skill into 5 parts, language use, mechanical skills, treatment of content, stylistic skills and judgement skills. From these 5 aspects, several writing ability are included in, for example the ability to write correct and appropriate sentence, the ability to spell and use the words appropriately, the ability to manipulate sentences and paragraphs, and use language effectively, the ability to select, organize and order relevant information.”(Zhou, 2012: 272). According to Heaton’s definition of writing skills, and the writing abilities explained that included in the skills, and from the topic chosen we can say that the writing part of CET4 can choose an appropriate and a familiar topic to test student’s writing ability. Students with a familiar topic can think much and write more, and then all the writing abilities can be easily tested, and once a topic waschosen well, the difficulty level is relatively moderate. However, from the scoring criteria, we can find that the criteria pays much attention to the usage of words and language error, as it was mentioned above, writing not only includes language knowledge, but also many social and psychological factors. So, testers should not only score a work by how well the students use the words and the sentences structure, they should also find what the testees what to express by their writing if their work with a little more language errors and misspelling.7. ConclusionAs the CET4 is a nationwide English test and the aim of this test is to help teaching, so from all above, teachers in China who still use the results-oriented teaching method should make some changes and pay more attentions to the topic and student’s interest in writing, and take the culture and psychological factors into their teaching preparation. Besides, doing more research, reading more research paper and learning more English writing theories of how to teaching English writing is also important to teach well.References:[1]J.B.Heaton,Writing English Language Tests[M].Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press.2000.[2]?申.语言测试[M].上海外语教育出版社,2012.希望以上资料对你有所帮助,附励志名言3条:1、要接受自己行动所带来的责任而非自己成就所带来的荣耀。

A Brief Analysis of english teaching in senior high school,AA Brief Analysis of english teaching in senior high schoolAbstract: Classroom teaching is the main way for students to learn English. But in senior high school, a lots of probelms still exsit in the English teaching especially in the teaching of reading and writing. In this paper, the importance and methods of reading and writing will be further discussed. Key words: reading writing techniquesIntroduction: Classes should be learner-centered, with meaningful, functional activities, often, classes begin by finding out what the students don’t know. These classes op erate on the assumption that there is a great deal of information that students lack and that the teacher and textbooks will impact that information to the students. Teachers who hold this assumption view students as plants waiting passively to be fed and watered. But I think the students should be regarded as explorers, active learners who bring a great deal to the learning process and at the same time, draw from their environment as they develop new understandings. The basic principle will be used in the teaching of reading and writing.Section One------ How to teach readingI. Why teach readingThere are many reasons why getting students to read English texts is an important part of the teacher’s job. In the first place, many of them want to be able to read texts in English either for their careers, for study purposes or simply for pleasure. Anything we can do to make reading easier for them must be a good idea.Reading texts provide good models for English writing, provide opportunities to study language vocabulary, grammar, punctuation, and the way to construct sentences, paragraphs and texts. Lastly, good reading texts can introduce interesting topics, stimulate discussion, excite imaginative responses and be the springboard for well-rounded, fascinating lessons. The last but not the least, students must read widely because only a fraction of knowledge about the world can come from other experiences in their short lives.II. What kind of reading should students do?When the teachers give reading class to students, they should notice a balance----a balance to be struck between real English on the one hand and the students’ capabilities and interests on the other. There is some authentic written material which beginner students can understand to some degree: menus, timetables, signs and basic instructions, for example, and, where appropriate, teachers can use these. But for longer prose, teachers can offer their students texts, which, while being like English, are nevertheless written or adapted especially for their level. Anyway, the materials to be read should be interesting and meaningful. Teachers should become better acquainted with books written specially for teenagers and dealing with their problems.III. What are the principles behind the teaching of reading?i) Permit Students To ReadNo one has learned to swim by practicing the skills of backstrokes, flutter kicks or treading water while staying on the edge of the swimming pool. Yet, in the teaching of reading teachers often do just that. Rather t han let the students into “the water”, teachers keep them in skills books learning rules about letters, syllables or definitions of words rather than letting them into the book itself, permitting them to be immersed in thelanguage which comes from the authors as the readers try to reconstruct the written message.ii) Encourage students to respond to the content of a reading text, not just to the languageOf course, it is important to study reading texts for the way they use language, how many paragraphs they contain and how many times they use relative clauses. But the meaning, the message of the text, is much more important. Teachers should help students understand that the main reason to read is for them. They have to have their own purpose to read and reading must make sense, they have to find ways of doing something about it. They should be encouraged either to reread or to continue reading to gain meaning. But they must realize that the meaning is not in the teacher, but in the interaction between the reader and author. Students should be encouraged to ask themselves repeatedly, “Does this make sense to me?” Students should be encouraged to reject and to be intolerant of reading materials that do not make sense.iii) Encourage students to guess or predictReaders’ guesses or predictions are based on the cumulative information and syntactic structure they have been learning as they have been reading. Therefore, their guesses are more often than not appropriate to the materials. Students have to realize that risk taking in reading is appropriate; that using context to decide what words mean is a proficient reading strategy and that they have the language sense to make appropriate guesses which can fit both the grammatical and semantic sense of what they are reading.iv) Match the task to the topicOnce a decision has been taken about what kind of readingtext the students are going to read, teachers need to choose good reading tasks—the right kind of questions and useful puzzles, etc. Asking boring and inappropriate questions can undermine the most interesting text; the most commonplace passage can be made really exciting with imaginative and challenging tasks. Working in groups, the English teacher and students take turns asking each other questions following the reading. The teacher may ask, “ What is the significance of the character’s age?” These questions require inferences based on details from the reading text.Section Two------How to teach writing (Developing correctness in students’ writing)“Students learn to write by writing, and they learn to write correctly by writing, revising, and proofreading their own work”---with some help or direction from the teacher when it is necessary. They do not learn to write correctly by studying about writing or doing isolated workbook exercises unrelated to their own writing. So, the most important technique a teacher can use to guide students toward grammatically correct writing is to let them write, let them write things related to their own experiences. There is no limit to the kinds of text the teacher can ask students to write. Teachers’ decisions, though, should based on how much language the students know, what their interests are.“Do I read a paper and ignore all punctuation, w hat good is that for students? We spend hours at night with papers---I’m not sure the students get as much from it as the time I spend on it.”These comments by senior high school English teachers discussing the process of marking student papers reflect the dissatisfaction and frustration of many teachers over the problemof dealing with the errors in student writing-----the obvious mistakes in spelling, punctuation----Traditionally, teachers have worked to correct errors in two ways: by teaching grammatically correctness through exercise in grammar texts; by pointing out all errors when making student papers. Most students find it very dispiriting if they get a piece of written work back and it is covered in red ink, underlings and crossing-out. It is a powerful visual statement of the fact that their written English is terrible. Of course, some pieces of written work are completely full of mistakes, but even in these cases, the teacher has to achieve a balance between being accurate and truthful on the one hand and treating students sensitively and sympathetically on the other. Some techniques can be used in dealing with the errors in student papers:i) SelectivityRather than engage in intensive error-correction when responding to student writing, teachers are encouraged to adopt a more moderate approach to error. If the teacher over-corrects the students’ mistakes, the students would be likely to focus on errors instead of ideas. Students are more likely to grow as writers when the teacher’s primary purpo se in reading student papers is to respond to content. However, if attention to content and correctness are combined when making papers, it is more helpful to select one or two kinds of errors the individual student is making than to point out every error in the paper. The teacher can identify a selected error, show an example or two on the student paper, and either explain the correct form or direct the student to a handbook for further explanation. It is always worth writing a comment at the end of a piece of written work -----anything from “Well done” to “This is a good story, but you must look again at your use of past tenses---see X grammar book page .”ii) Error-analysisAnother method for working with student error, one that can be especially fruitful for teachers, is to approach it from an analytic perspective. Teachers, as error-analyst, look for patterns in the errors of an individual student, tries to discover how the mistake arrived at the mistakes by analyzing the error (Lack of knowledge about a certain grammatical point; A careless one or a mis-learned rule?), and plans strategies accordingly.iii) Publish Student WritingThe final basic strategy is publishing. Students need a reason for laboring over a draft until it is perfect; the urge to see oneself in print can be a powerful drive toward revision and proofreading. Conclusion: As teachers to the students who are in senior high school, they should learn to turn students’ hard work toward supporting the language strengths students already have, proving students with a feeling of success, finding materials and planning classroom experiences will turn students on to reading and writing, the reading and writing will develop with much greater ease than it does at the present time.Reference:Gu Xueliang, The Basic Technical Training in English Teaching, Hangzhou University Press, 1998.Wilga M.Rivers & Mary S. A Brief Analysis of the Thesis of TICKETS PLEASE
The vivid portrayal of the characters, settings and intense conflicts between two sexes shown in the short novel "Ticket, please" written by D. H. Lawrence has given readers a clear picture of social life and phenomena in wartime and industrial revolution, which has aroused the interest and curiosity of numerous readers around the world for centuries.
The story happened in the age of the industrial revolution during the World War I, during which time people were greatly driven by desire for money and sex. Not only were the industrial development and economic prosperity seen in the countryside, of which tramcar, electricity, colliery were all obvious examples, but also the dark side of the society and pollution caused by the industrial progress were presented in the novel, such as smoke, shadow and cold little market-places, etc, which made the reader deeply attracted by the settings and the happenings between different people in the countrysie. With the rapid development of the industry, the environment had been polluted and human nature had been distorted. In general, the conflict between nature and industrial development could easily be seen by the surroundings.Furthermore, it was rather hard for people who only cared about money and sex to live a stable and happy life because of the war and ever-changing social situation.
At that time, men were superior to women and seemed to have a higher status. As a result of what was mentioned above, men tended to satisfy their own desires regardless of the interest of women who began to be aware of their own social status and tried to fight for their own destiny. In the novel "Ticket, please", the conflict between male and female was presented by the events happening between the two main protagonists John Thomas and Annie Stone in the short novel "Ticket, please". Having known John Thomas was a man who was always chasing for pretty girls and had lots of affairs with them for a long time, Annie still couldn't control his desire and feelings, as a result of which she had fallen in love with Thomas desperately. Later she was also deserted by Thomas and decided to take revenge. Consequently, she urged many other girls who were also deserted by him to unite and set a trap for Thomas, which showed that women also meant to become masters of their own fate. Finally, the girls had beaten him and he had paid for his own desires and irresponsible actions. However, Annie didn't feel happy at all as her dream of love was entirely destroyed by Thomas's purposefully choice of her to express his hatred.
