汉代的“达人”“达人”作为社会称谓,很早就已经出现。
《左传·昭公七年》记录了鲁国贵族孟僖子推崇“礼”的一段话,其中称孔子为“达人”。
他说:“礼,人之干也。
无礼,无以立。
吾闻将有达者曰孔丘,圣人之后也。
”他追溯了孔子家族的光荣,又引了臧叔纥的话:“圣人有明德者,若不当世,其后必有达人。
”臧叔纥认为“达人”的出现和“明德”的理念有一定关系。
他的所谓“圣人”如不当世,其后代必有“达人”的说法,可以说是“达人”称谓比较早的记录。
“达人”虽然不是“圣人”,却和“圣人”有某种颇相亲近的关联。
汉代人说到“达人”的一个典型的例子,见于贾谊撰写的一篇文采特异的文章。
他在《鵩鸟赋》写道:“小智自私兮,贱彼贵我;达人大观兮,物无不可。
”《史记·屈原贾生列传》则写作:“小知自私兮,贱彼贵我;通人大观兮,物无不可。
”可见,在当时人看来,“达人”和“通人”的意思是大体相近的,都是说通达之士。
“达”就是“通”,是汉代语言文字学常识。
《仪礼·士昏礼》“下达纳采”,郑玄的解释就是“达,通也”。
东汉晚期,“达人”的出现比较密集。
所谓“月旦评”形式与士人阶层对风誉的普遍追求,可能是这一现象的文化背景。
后来在中国民间被看作智慧化身的诸葛亮,就被称作“达人”。
《艺文类聚》卷六四引晋习凿齿《诸葛武侯宅铭》对他有“达人有作,振此颓风”的高度赞美。
汉末作为社会称谓的“达人”,通常的涵义大约是指有地位、有身份、有影响、有名望的人。
