然而，这件事发展到最后却并未如她们所愿，她们可真是不走运。
班福德戴着眼镜，是个很纤瘦的姑娘。
由于玛奇的积蓄不多，也可以说一点积蓄都没有，所以投资农场的钱基本都是由班福德出的。
班福德的父亲在伊斯林顿做小生意，他非常疼爱自己的女儿，他觉得女儿很可能一辈子都嫁不出去了，为了她的将来考虑，他便帮助她买下了这家农场。
玛奇是个很强壮的姑娘。

班福德那年迈的爷爷先前也是一个农场主，起初两位姑娘就跟他在一起生活。

当然了，她们这样的年纪也称不上老。
她们开始开创自己的事业，在行动的过程中她们非常勇敢果断。
她们养了不少鸡，一些鸭，另外，还有两头小母牛就放养在牧场上。
她们的鸡品种繁多，其中包括黑色和白色的来航鸡，普利茅斯鸡，以及怀恩多特鸡。
她们很不走运，有一头母牛很不老实，在农场里根本就待不住。
那头小母牛老是往外跑，农场的墙壁被玛奇铸造得坚固极了，但还是无法阻止它外逃。
它逃出去以后，要么就在树林中到处乱跑，要么就跑进附近的牧地里去。
玛奇和班福德无奈地追在它后面，她们总也逮不住它，尽管她们已经追得相当卖力了。
后来，她们只能卖掉了这头小母牛，除此之外，她们实在想不出别的办法了。
年迈的爷爷随即离开了人世，当时另外一头牛的第一个牛犊就要出世了。
两位姑娘又急急忙忙地卖掉了第二头牛，因为将要发生在它身上的这件事叫她们觉得很恐惧，之后她们便开始一心一意地喂养她们的鸡和鸭。
