1My Thoughts After Reading "The Pine Tree and the Willow Tree"Hi there! My name is Emily and I'm in 5th grade. Our teacher Mrs. Jones just had us read this story called "The Pine Tree and the Willow Tree" for our English class. It's a fable, which means it's a little made-up story that teaches you a lesson at the end. I thought I'd share my thoughts on it!The story is about these two trees that were planted right next to each other when they were just saplings. One was a pine tree and the other was a willow tree. At first, they were the best of friends. They loved keeping each other company and watching the seasons change together year after year. But after a while, the pine tree started getting really full of itself. It bragged about being tall and sturdy with branches that pointed up towards the sky. The willow tree was much morehumble, with slender drooping branches. The pine tree started making fun of the willow tree for being so flimsy and weak. The willow tree tried its best to stay positive. It told the pine tree that being flexible was actually a good thing during strong windstorms. But the pine tree wouldn't listen. It just kept going on and on about how superior it was. Then one winter, a huge blizzard came through with heavy snow and fierce winds. The strong, mighty pine tree refused to bend at all and ended up cracking under all the weight and pressure. But the willow tree was able to sway and bend safely in the storm without breaking. When spring came, the poor pine tree was a broken, laughing stock. Meanwhile, the willow tree was totally fine because it knew how to go with the flow and bend rather than always standing still and rigid. The willow tree felt bad for the pine tree but also taught it a lesson about not being so stuck-up and arrogant all the time.I think this story is trying to teach kids that it's better to be humble, gentle and flexible than to be arrogant and unwavering. The pine tree thought being tall and sturdy made it better than the willow tree. But in the end, those qualities actually made it weaker when put to the real test of the storm. The willow tree, on the other hand, was looked down on for being so flimsy and droopy. But its ability to bend and sway ended up saving it when things got really tough and dangerous. Its flexibility was a strength, not a weakness like the pine tree thought.I can totally see examples of this lesson applying in real life. Like, say there are two kids in school - one is really book smart and gets amazing grades all the time. The other kid doesn't test as well but is really good at making friends and just going with the flow in social situations. The brainy kid might look down on and tease the other kid for not being as academically gifted. Kind of like how the pine tree mocked the willow for not being as tall and sturdy. But then let's say they get into middle school or high school, where social skills start becoming more important than just math and reading skills. The kid who was an outsider for being so "floppy" and flexible could actually end up being more successful because they know how to adapt to changing situations and get along with others really well. Just like how the willow survived the storm by bending with the winds rather than fighting them.Whereas the kid who was seen as so "mighty" and "strong" academically could end up struggling because they're too stuck in their ways and unfamiliar with flexibility and adapting. They could end up being that broken pine tree that everyone laughs at because their one skill isn't as valuable anymore in the bigger picture. So to summarize, I think the moral of this story is to appreciate flexibility, humility and going with the flow. It's teaching us not to be arrogant or look down on others just because they aren't as outwardly strong or skilled in a particular area. Because what seems like a weakness can actually be a powerful strength when things get tough and unpredictable in life.A gentle willow that knows how to bend isn't nearly as weak and pathetic as the pine tree thought. In many ways, the willow is a lot tougher because of its ability to be flexible and roll with the punches. Rigidity will only get you so far before you're at risk of cracking or breaking entirely. Those are just my thoughts though! Mrs. Jones asked the whole class what we took away from the story, and I'm really curious to hear my classmates' different perspectives too. Fablesare so cool because they can teach such important lessons in a really simple, fun way that sticks with you.Even though it was just a short little story about two trees going through a storm, I can already see so many real-life examples where the moral applies. Like with school, careers, friend groups, family relationships - you name it! Being arrogant and inflexible is almost never the right approach. We could all afford to be a bit more like that humble, bending willow.Alright, that's all from me! Let me know if you want to hear about any other books, stories or lessons we cover in English class. I'll do my best to summarize them as awise-beyond-my-years 5th grader. Take care!
