2022-2023学年广东省韶关市广东北江实验学校高一下学期期中英语试题1. Theater is a big part of what makes New York shine. This city is full of talent that even the youngest can appreciate, and at the best Broadway shows, everyone in your crew will be interested. The Lion King (Ages 8 and up.)There’s a reason Simba’s story continues to draw in crowds year after year: It’s an amazing production with amazing sets and a moving score. Seeing The Lion King live is something like a ceremony for New York kids. Unconvinced? Ask the 100 million+ audience members worldwide who’ve seen the performance.Six (Ages 10 and up.)On a concert stage, backed by an all-female band, the six wives of Tudor Dynasty Henry Ⅷ air their complaints in the form of modern pop. The queens sing their heads off, and the audience loses its mind. Some of the stories are pretty dark, but the girl-power dance moves will make older kids excited.Wicked (Ages 8 and up.)Based on novelist Gregory Maguire’s 1995 adult variation on L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Wicked shows what happened before the events in the children’s book. The musical addresses complex themes, such as standards of beauty and morality. While children five and up are permitted in the theater, little ones might be afraid of the flying monkeys.Come from Away (Ages 10 and up.)One of the more unlikely musicals on Broadway is an excellent choice for the family: Come from Away is the tense but humane story of an airport in Gander, Newfoundland, where 38 planes and more than 6,000 passengers were forced to land on September 11, 2001. Coming of age is that time in each of our lives when we begin to see the possibilities. The world opens up in ways that mature our vision and give us a sense of responsibility and gratefulness. Connor had just started college and loved being at that stage in his life where he could eat all the pizza he wanted, get engaged in adult conversations with his parents about the responsibility to make life better for others. Connor’s optimism was infectious. There was so much he could do, and so much he could become. But it all ended one night when Connor was distracted while driving on a Colorado high- way. A young man,who gave off so much light, suddenly went dark.Connor’s father, David, took it particularly hard. A father sees more than his own traits (性格) in his son; he sees greater possibilities than he achieved. Taking that hope away left David feeling at a loss. But Connor’s optimism was one of those traits passed on to him by his father. So, David got to work.First, he established the Honor Connor Scholarship Fund to reward students who served in the community. Next, he went to work creating a research-based curriculum that educates University of Colorado Boulder students and their families about the dangers of texting while driving. It includes a very simple three part promise: Do not text or use social media while driving, speak out if riding with a driver who is distracted and encourage friends and family to drive phone-freeDavid now works with lecturers at various colleges and high schools, ensuring young minds understand how statistically at risk they are when they text while driving. He’s become a passionate advocate for preparing young people to drive safely and not reach for their phones while they’re at the wheel. “I just don’t want other parents to go through what I did when I lost Connor,” says David. “It’s just so preventable.”1. What’s the p urpose of paragraph 1?A.To give the background of a funny story.B.To explain why David chose to volunteer.C.To set off David’s great pain of losing his son.D.To sing high praise for Connor’s healthy growth.2. Why did David work with lecturers under a research-based curriculum?A.He wanted to take a job in a college.B.He took the classes that Connor hadn’t finished.C.He wanted to prevent the sad event that he had suffered.D.He honored Connor for what he had done in the community.3. This was a major week in AI (Artificial Intelligence), with some of the largest companies announced their most updated and leading models: GPT-4 fr om OpenAI’s made its first show to the public, while Google put out its Med-PaLM 2, a new-and-improved medical model etc. Meanwhile, Company Anthropic introduced its lighter and cheaper Claude API, which is a ChatGPT competitor. Some people cannot handle even the smallest amount of chili peppers in their dinner while others can’t get enough of them.Scientists have long been puzzled by why some people love the chili while others loathe it. Plenty of research has been done on the subject, dating as far back as the 1970s. Previous results showed that a love of chilies is related to childhood experiences, and that cultural influences affect our taste too. But the latest study has found that a person’s love of spicy food may be linked to his or her personality (性格) more than anything else, CBC News reported.“We have always assumed that liking drives intake — we eat what we like and we like what we eat. But no one has actually directly bothered to connect personality with intake of chili peppers,” said Professor John E. Hayes from Pennsylvania State University, who led the study. But before you look at the study, you should first know that “spicy” is not a taste, unlike sour, sweet, bitter and salty taste. It is, in fact, a burning feeling that you feel on the surface of your tongue. This got scientists thinking that maybe a love of spicy food is brought about by people’s longing for thrill, something they usually get from watching action movies or riding a roller coaster. In the study, 97 participants, both male and female, were asked to fill out questionnaires about their personality, for example, whether they like new experiences or tend to avoid risks. They were then given a glass of water with capsaicin (辣椒素), the plant chemical that makes a chili burn, mixed into it.By comparing the answers to the questionnaire and what participants said they felt about the spicy water, researchers found that those who tended to enjoy action movies or take risks were about six times more likely to enjoy the spicy water.Interestingly, we used to believe that the reason why some people can withstand (耐受) spicy food is that their tongues have become less sensitive to it. However, this latest study has found otherwise. “It’s not that it doesn’t burn as badly, but that you actually learn to like the burning feeling,” Hayes explained.1. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “loathe” in the second paragraph?A.Dislike. B.Fear.C.Put up with. D.Adapt to.2. What did Professor John E. Hayes and his team discover from their study?A.What we eat actually helps to develop our personality.B.Males are more likely to enjoy spicy food than females.C.Those trying to avoid risks tend to be less interested in spicy food.D.People are wrong to treat " spicy" as a kind of taste rather than a feeling.3. Why do some people like spicy food according to the recent study?A.Because their taste has become less sensitive.B.Because they love the burning feeling.C.Because they want to challenge themselves.D.Because the more they try spicy food, the less it burns.4. What’s the main idea of the passage?A.What one likes to eat mainly depends on one’s personality.B.Whether one enjoys spicy food depends largely on one’s personality.C.One’s personal experiences have nothing to do with their taste.D.Different people have different taste.5. Quality of life refers to an individual's general well-being. It can be determined by a variety of factors, especially the mental ones. 1 The following tips could give you what you need.Spend time with your thoughts. Spending time with your thoughts is a good way to know what makes you happy. It is worthwhile to always think about what you really need, and then act as you like. Know what upsets you and try to get away from it if possible. 2Get some help for constant problems. Sometimes things affecting your quality of life are simply your worry. 3 For instance, you may have issues with insomnia(失眠症) as you are aging. It can be difficult to get rid of it all by yourself. In this case, speaking to a professional doctor could relax yourself and help get your life back on track,4 If you feel down for having been leading a plain or even boring life and not accomplishing something meaningful, now it might be the time to start working on something bold(大胆的) to cheer you up. You can start by taking on a project that you’ve previously been afraid of.Learn something new. The more you develop your talents in many different areas, the more you have to be proud of. Have you ever doubted yourself? 5 This is because learning something new can help you add more skills to your list and prepare you for more chances ahead.6. She then ra n a marathon every day for 150 days— a 3,900-mile journey that ended in Melbourne on Monday, January 16,2023.By running the entire north-south distance of Australia, Murray-Bartlett beat the record held by British runner Kate Jayden, who ran a marathon for 106 continuous days last year. In addition to the new Guinness World Record, Murray-Bartlett was running to raise money for a conservation charity, the Wilderness Society. She raised $70,000 during her journey across Australia.“Yesterday was everything,” she said. “When I stood on the start line on August 20 I could never have imagined what the next 22 weeks would bring... I can’t put into words how good crossing that finish line felt, and to be honest, I think I’ll be processing for a few weeks, months, and even years to come.”Murray-Bartlett has been running professionally for many years. When she missed out on qualifying. for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, she decided on a new goal: running the length of Australia and setting a new female record for continuous marathons. To state the obvious: it wasn’t always easy. Murray-Bartlett experienced three injuries during the first 3 weeks of the journey. But she didn’t give up, and her body adapted as she ran along her country’s coasts, rainforests, dirt roads and highways. She ran through heavy rain and intense heat. The journey also served to raise awareness of Australia’s extinction(灭绝) crisis. Many of the island nation’s plants and animals are found nowhere else — yet 500 of them are threatened with extinction. Throughout the trip, Murray-Bartlett highlighted her country’s biodiversity on social media. When she finally crossed the finish line on Monday evening, she learned she’d raised nearly double her fundraising(募捐) goal.4.What’s one goal of Murray-Bartlett’s running?A.To enter the next Olympics.B.To go on running professionally.C.To collect money for protecting wildlife.D.To help bring back lost plants andanimals.5.How did she feel when crossing the finish line?A.Pleased.B.Faint.C.Confident.D.Horrible. 6.What do we know about the journey from paragraph 6?A.Murray-Bartlett finished the journey uninjured.B.The good weather continued during her journey.C.There were many challenges during the journey.D.The journey raised awareness of extinction crisis.7.Which words can best describe Murray-Bartlett?A.Energetic and frank.B.Tough and determined.C.Positive and adventurous.D.Considerate and generous. The old saying “Use it or lose it” doesn’t seem to be true when it comes to someone’s ability to preserve and use a foreign language, a new study has showed. The research team tasked almost 500 British people who had taken French GCSE or A-level between the 1970s and 2020 with completing a French vocabulary and grammar test. They included a survey of whether participants had used their French knowledge over the years since their exams, and excluded (排除) anyone who had studied a language later on in life. They found that participants who had taken their exam 50 years ago and not used French ever since performed as well as as recent school leavers and those who occasionally used French.Lead researcher Monika Schmid said: “The knowledge of language is surprisingly stable over long periods of time, compared to other subjects such as maths, history or science. This is likely because of the way language is stored in memory. V ocabulary is memorized in the same way that facts, dates and names are, while this memory may become weaker over time, and grammar is learned in a similar way to riding a bike, a kind of muscle memory, which is much more stable. V ocabulary knowledge on the other hand, exists in a highly connected network, which means that we need only be reminded of a word that sounds similar to a foreign language word for our brain to recall it.”“Many people are not willing to revisit languages they once learnt as they fear they willbe forced to relive some of the more ‘boring’ elements of the courses, such as grammar, but our work suggests that this would not be necessary. We hope that it might encourage more people to pick foreign languages back up if they know it would only take a short amount of time in refresher lessons to go back to their original level,” Schmid added.8.What did the researchers ask the participants to do?A.Take a French exam.B.Conduct a survey in French.C.Learn French from recent school leavers.D.Talk about their French GCSE experience.9.What can help us recall a foreign word?A.A fact related to it.B.Our muscle memory.C.A similar-sounding word.D.The grammar of the language. 10.What can we infer from Schmid’s words in the last paragraph?A.One is able to quickly and easily to learn a new language.B.Years of use promises fluency in a foreign language.C.The boring elements of a language course are important.D.It is easier than one thinks to pick a foreign language back up.11.What is the best title for the text?A.Language Tests Taken at School MatterB.If You Don’t Use a Language, You Lose ItC.Knowledge of Foreign Languages Lasts a LifetimeD.When You Grasp the Grammar, You Learn the LanguageHousing officials say that lately they are noticing something different: students seem to lack the will, and the skill, to deal with ordinary conflicts. “We have students who are mad at each other and they text each other in the same room,” says a teacher. “So many of our conflicts are because kids don’t know how to solve a problem by formal discussion.”And as any pop psychologist will tell you, bottled emotions lead to silent discontent (不满) that can boil over into frustration and anger. At the University of Florida, emotional conflicts occur about once a week, the university’s director of housing education says, “Over the past five years, roommate conflicts have increased. The students don’t have the person-to-person discussions and they don’t know how to handle them.” The problem is mostdramatic among freshmen; housing professionals say they see improvement as students move toward graduation, but some never seem to improve, and they worry about how such students will deal with conflicts after college.Administrators guess that reliance on cell phones and the Internet may have made it easier for young people to avoid uncomfortable encounters. Why express anger in person when you can vent (发泄) in a text? “Things are posted on someone’s wall on Facebook like: Oh, my roommate kept me up all night studying,” says Dana Pysz, an assistant director at the University of California, Los Angeles. “It’s a different way to express their conflict to each other, consequently creating even more conflicts as complaints go public.” In recent focus groups at North Carolina State University, dorm residents said they would not even deal with noisy neighbors on their floor.Administrators point to parents who have fixed their children’s problems in their entire lives. Now in college, the children lack the skills to attend to even modest conflicts. Some parents continue to interfere (干涉) on campus.12.What is the main reason for many roommate conflicts?A.Students are not good at reaching an agreement about the problems.B.Students are not satisfied with each other.C.Housing directors are not responsible for them.D.Students are not strong-willed.13.What do we learn from the second paragraph?A.Students, especially freshmen, should bottle up their dissatisfaction.B.Students in Florida sit down and have a person-to-person talk once a week.C.Not all students are able to handle conflicts by the time they graduate.D.The number of conflicts among roommates has decreased in the past five years. 14.What is the attitude of Dana Pysz when he mentions roommates reveal their conflicts in the media?A.Disapproving.B.Indifferent.C.Supportive.D.Unclear. 15.What should parents do according to the passage?A.They should be involved in their children’s life on campus.B.They should deal with their children’s problems in their whole lives.C.They should constantly contact the administrators of the college.D.They should teach their children the skills to tackle the conflicts.Reviews (评论) play an important role in our online society; they allow you to get an idea of what you are getting yourself into before actually putting any time into such a venture (冒险). Despite this, some people still choose not to take advantage of this useful tool. 16 Let’s look at why you should read reviews before buying something online.17 Many factors (因素) determine what quality a product has, and trying to look for them all on your own when trying to shop is going to take you days of research. Many user review websites can give you a good idea of what the usual experience is when buying a product.18 Not only will you have to create an account (账户) but you will also need to spend money to try out the game for a while to get a full view of what it has to offer. You can just look up reviews by experienced players and know right away whether it’s a great game. It’s really that simple. With the number of companies that are out there, finding one that meets your tastes for what you are looking for can be a near-impossible task. 19 Reviews allow you to jump straight to the key points you need to know before wasting any time on a product that isn’t to your tastes. So next time you consider buying something online, look up a few simple reviews.20 But you will not regret it.A.It might take a few minutes.B.This may sound like a big deal.C.It can lead you to having a bad shopping experience.D.Reviews allow you to see if a product is worth your time.E.This is especially the case if you happen to be someone with special tastes.F.This can be for many reasons such as believing that others can’t exactly describe whatever product you are looking to buy.G.For example, you are considering trying out an online game.二、完形填空A Life-Giving TouchOn March 25, 2010, Kate and David heard the words every parent 21 : Theirnewborn wasn’t going to make it.
