The passages will be read twice, but the questions will be spoken only once. When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on your paper and decide whic h one would be the best answer to the question you have heard.Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.American English is full of colorful expressions. One such expression is to touch all bases. There are four bases in baseball—first, second, third and home plate.T ogether, the bases form a diamond shape. When a baseball player hits the ball, he must run to each base — in order — and touch it with his foot. It is the only way to score a point. The importance of touching all the bases was shown at the start of the 1974 baseball season.Hank Aaron was a player with the Atlanta Braves team. He was seeking the record for hitting the most home runs. Aaron needed just one home run to equal the record held by Babe Ruth, the greatest hitter in baseball history.Aaron got that home run the very first time he had a chance to hit the ball. That gave him 714 home runs — the same as Babe Ruth. After that day, baseball fans held their breath every time it was Hank Aaron’s turn to hit. When would he hit home run number 715? The wait was not long. In the second week of the season, Aaron again hit the ball over the wall. He had beaten Babe Ruth’s record. But first, he had to run around the four bases. The other players on his team watched carefully to make sure he touched each one. So, to touch all bases means to do what is necessary to complete an activity.Questions:11. Which of the following players will score in a baseball game?12. Why did baseball fans pay so much attention to Hank Aaron?13. What’s the purpose of this passage?Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.Crowds of people gathered on the Great Wall of China holding D-STRONG signs to help a dying 8-year-old boy achieve his goal of becoming famous inChinaand across the world.Dorian Murray told his father he wanted to be famous on the “bridge in China,”meaning the Great Wall of China, after a medical check revealed his cancer was no longer treatable. He had been battling the illness for four years. Dorian’s father then posted his dialogues with the boy on Facebook. “Hey dad,you know what I really want before I go to heaven?” Dorian asked. “I would like to be famous inChina.”His fa ther responded by spreading Dorian's wish across the web. “I am reaching out to anyone who may know someone inChinaor other countries who would be willing to send a picture to Dorian with a #D-STRONG sign,” the father said. The support spread beyondBeijing. Photos with #D-STRONG also appeared from Tian’anmen Square in Beijing, West Lake in Hangzhou and the Huangpu River inShanghai. “They believe in me. And it’s just really nice to know that so many people have my back for me,” the boy told a lo cal TV station.Murray’s story was quickly picked up by several Chinese newspapers, attracting more people to join the effort to fulfill his dream. China’s most influential English language newspaper China Daily even ran the story on its front page, which is usually devoted to big political news.Questions:14. How did Murray want to make himself famous?15. Which of the following sites was not reported to have joined the activity?16. What is the news mainly about?Section CDirections: In Section C, you will hear two longer conversations. Theconversations will be read twice. After you hear each conversation, you are required to fill in the numbered blanks with the information you have heard. Write your answers on your answer sheet. Questions 17 through 20 are based on the following passage.M: Passport, please … Thank you. Why are you applying forUSvisa?W: I want to further my study after high school graduation. But, first I am going to takesome intensive English language courses in New York during the summer session.M: And how long do you plan on staying?W: Approximately two months. My return flight is estimated on the 30th of August becauseI will be back toShanghaiand finish my last year study.M: Ok. And do you plan on working while you’re here?W: No, definitely not. I am only here for study and short-term traveling.M: Where will you be staying while you are here?W: Actually, I have already made a reservation of a single-room dormitory in the school. Iam sure that I will stay there for the whole summer.M: Ok, well, welcome to US. Enjoy your stay.Complete the form. Write ONE WORD for each answer.Questions 21 through 24 are based on the following passage.M: Could you tell me why you want to work in our kindergarten? You know kids are very annoying sometimes.W: I love children. And their innocent smiles impress me a lot.M: Do you have relevant experience? Your major is English, right?W: Yes, I will graduate this coming July and I have some babysitting experience. M: Go on please.W: I like the children’s company. I often sing to the kids and teach them how to dance. I think my major works to my benefit, because I can teach kids standard pronunciation and cultivate their interest in the language。
