IELTS Sample Articles (1)1. Discuss (观点类之对立观点)Directions: It has been more than 30 years since man first landed on the moon. Some people think that space research is a waste of money. Discuss. For over fifty years, a number of nations have been involved in the exploration of outer space. This research has been very costly, of course. Has this money been well-spent or wasted? Some people believe that all or most space research should be eliminated because of its incredible expense, not only in terms of money, but also in terms of scientific and human resources. These people point out the fact that it cost billions of dollars to send astronauts to the moon, but all they brought back were some worthless rocks. These people say that the money and effort now being wasted in outer space could be spent on more important projects right here on earth, such as providing housing for homeless people, improving the education system, saving the environment, and finding cures for diseases. However, other people believe that space research has provided many benefits to mankind. They point out that hundreds of useful products, from personal computers to heart pacemakers to freeze-dried foods, are the direct or indirect results of space research. They say that weather and communication satellites, which are also products of space programs, have benefited people all over the globe. In addition to these practical benefits, supporters of the space program point to the scientific knowledge that has been acquired about the sun, the moon, the planets, and even our own earth as a result of space research.I agree with those people who support space research and wish it to continue. Space research, as shown, has already brought many benefits to humanity. Perhaps it will bring even more benefits in the future, ones that we can not even imagine now. Moreover, just as individual people need challenges to make their lives more interesting, I believe the human race itself needs a challenge, and I think that the peaceful exploration of outer space provides just such a challenge.2. Opinion (观点类之事物性质)Directions: Many people think that nowadays people are being subjected to more and more pressure in their work, and thus are having less and less time to relax. What’s your opinion? In modern society, especially in big cities, hard work has undoubtedly become a very important feature of ordinary people’s everyday life. It seems that may people are under the impression that their work is becoming more pressing and urgent, and thus they sacrifice more and more leisure time.In the first place, with the rapid development of science and technology, work today is more demanding than it used to be. For example, college graduates nowadays have to master English, computer science and driving skills before they can find decent jobs. People have to spend more time acquiring new techniques and skills. And their spare time tends to be fully occupied, not with leisure pursuits, but with work-related pursuits. In the second place, competition is becoming more intense. Many people feel anxious that they may be “laid-off” if they can’t work as hard as others. And they also feel at a disadvantage before new graduates. Therefore, it is understandable that people keep themselves involved in intensely hard work in order to preserve their positions. The worst aspect of this phenomenon, in my opinion, is that the huge pressure of work will gradually affect people’s mental health. Excessively hard wok means that people can never get rid of the fatigue of their work, even in their leisure time. This means that they can not enjoy a normal life.In a word, in modern life overwork is stealing our leisure time. However, I believe this problem will be settled eventually with the development of science and technology.3. Problem + Reasons + Recommendations (问题+原因+办法)Directions: It is generally acknowledged that families are now not as close as they used to be. Give possible reasons and your recommendations. There is much discussion nowadays as to whether or not the relationship between family members is as close as before. Diverse contributing factors can be identified. In the following, I would like to present my point of view.Great changes have taken place in family life along with the development of society. One of them is that the once-extended family tends to become smaller and smaller. Many children have to leave their parents at an early age to study or work elsewhere. As time passes, children become emotionally estranged from their parents.Compared with the past, social competition is becoming increasingly fierce. People are urged to concentrate their efforts upon work, so that they can achieve success, or at least a good standard of living. As a result, they can’t afford to spend their leisure hours with the ir families. The importance of bonds of kinship is gradually fading from their minds. In addition, the availability of various kinds of recreational facilities also diverts people from enjoying chats with the member of their families. Their free time is mostly occupied by watching TV, surfing the Internet or playing video games. They come to lose interest in communication with the other members of their families. In view of such alienation within families, I do believe that urgent steps must be taken. For members of families who live away from one another, regular contact on the phone can bring them the care that they need. Family reunions on holidays or other important occasions can make a difference as well. For those living together, it is a good idea to take some time off work or recreation periods to spend more time with each other. In the final analysis, a close family relationship can surely be maintained as long as we realize the significant role it plays in our lives and attach importance to it.4. Agree or disagree (观点类之驳斥文章)It is often said that the subjects taught in schools are too academic in orientation and that it would be more useful for children to learn about practical matters such as home management, work and interpersonal skills. To what extent do you agree or disagree?A criticism often heard these days is that the subjects taught in schools tend to be too academic, and contribute little to preparing a young person for the real-life tasks he or she will have to perform after graduation. They say that academic subjects are rooted in the past, and are not useful for solving modern problems. I disagree with this point of view for three reasons. My first reason is that it is the duty of parents, not teachers, to prepare their children to deal with the practical affairs of life. The home, not the classroom, is the ideal place to learn about home management and interpersonal skills. As for work abilities and attitudes they are best learned “onthe job” and under the supervision of an experienc ed older worker. My second reason is that academic subjects have withstood the test of time. They represent the accumulated wisdom of our ancestors down through the ages, and, far from being impractical, they equip us with the knowledge and confidence to make sound judgments about any problems which may crop up. In addition, academic subjects are good for training us in mental discipline, while practical subjects are weak in this regard. My third reason is based on the saying “Man does not live by bread alone.” Schooldays devoted solely to instruction in down-to-earth practical matters would be dull indeed! Lessons in the best literature of the world, and the epoch-making scientific and geographical discoveries of the past enrich our lives and make us feel that we are part of the great family of mankind. All in all, the teaching of academic subjects in schools is entirely appropriate. It is my firmly held view that practical subjects have no place in the classroom. On the contrary, the curriculum should be more academic!Appendix: Quotations for All of You1.It’s a funny thing about life; if you refuse to accept anything but the best, you very often get it.– Maugham2.If you do not plant knowledge when young, it will give us no shade when we are old.– Chesterfield3.All the advantage isn’t in running fast, but rather in getting an early start. – Rabelais4.There is nothing like a dream to create the future. – Victor Hugo5.Write it on your heart that every day is the best day of the year. – Ralph Waldo Emerson6.Progress is the activity of today and the assurance of tomorrow. – Emerson7.You cannot create experience. You should spend about20minutes on this task. The graph shows the impact of vaccinations on the incidence of whooping cough, a childhood illness,between1940and1990in Britain.Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. The graph shows the changing number of cases of whooping cough in Britain from1940to1990,and how the introduction and use of a vaccine for the disease affected the pattern.Apparently, there was a direct link between the administration of the vaccine and the number of cases of whooping cough among children during this period in history. Overall, the number of cases fell from a high of170,000to almost zero. However, there were significant fluctuations in the trend. For example, just after1940,there was a surge in the number of cases from50,000toapproximately170,000.Although the figure fell back in the next few years, it peaked again in the early1950s and fluctuated considerably until the introduction of a vaccination in the late1950s.Following this, the number of cases dropped sharply to well below20,000 in the mid-1970s,until a sudden fall in vaccinations,from81percent to30 percent, resulted in a parallel rise in the incidence of the illness.Figures then went up again to60,000around1980,but gradually fell back to their earlier level as vaccinations were resumed.By1990,94percent of children were being vaccinated against whooping cough, and there were few,if any, cases.(208words)。

It is evident that both nations saw considerable fluctuations in fertility, with lows during the 1940s and highs during the 1950s.1920 to15 percent in 1935, China’sThis was followed by a period of exponential growth, with fertility in the countrypercent in 1950.in this figure. The US birth rate, meanwhile, and 13 percentin 1950, followed by a steady fall.It is interesting to note that whileuntil 1950, the gap between the two after this time as fertility in China slid away.2.Given are two figures concerning criminality in Britain. The first provides data on the rates of conviction among men and women of various ages, while the second indicates the gender balance of the UK prison population.the rate of conviction among Britsof both during adolescence the age of about 20. men are far more likely to offend than women. From a negligible 2 percent among 10-year-old boys, the male conviction rateto approximately 20-year-olds. The percentage of0 percent among girls of 10 to some 5 percent for 20-year-olds. The however, see dramatic decreases in criminality among both sexes. A mere 2 percent of crimes are committed by 60-year-old men and 0 percent by women of the same age.As for the proportion of male and female prison inmates, men outnumber women 24 to 1. Some 96 percent of all prisioners are men, while the remainder are female.A glance at the two pie charts provided reveals the relative popularity of various leisure activities among European adults in 1985 and 1995.Of these activities in both years, at 32 percent in 1985 and a slightly lower 30 percent in 1995. Yet, by far the most significant change to take place during this period was the increased popularity of computer games. Not a single respondent to the survey rated playing computer games as their preferred leisure activity in 1985. However, by 1995 this figure stood at 27 percent –the second highest overall. Also more popular in 1995 was talking with friends, at 26 percent compared to 21 percent a decade earlier. In stark contrast, however, all other activities decreased in popularity. Eating out –which was the second most widely enjoyed pastime in 1985,percent of respondents – slipped to a mere 8 percent in 1995. Likewisealso considerable decreases in the popularity ratings of talking withactivities and (as previously mentioned) watching television.4.Given are two figures providing a comparison of internet use in five European countries (namely Switzerland, Germany, France, Spain and the UK) in 1995, 2000 and 2004, as well as the popularity of internet shopping in these countries. It is evident from the information provided that Britain had by far the highest number of internet users in all three years. From 16 million in 1995, the number of British users climbed steadily to 22 million in 2000, before soaring to a staggering 41 million in 2004. Second in terms of internet use was Germany. This country saw a threefold increase during the period in question, from 5 million people in 1995 to 14 million in 2000 and 15 million in 2004. A similar increase took place in France. The two nations with the fewest internet users, meanwhile, were Switzerland and Spain. It is also interesting to note that internet shopping was far more common in the UK than in any other country listed. In fact, the prevalence of internet shopping in Britain was double that of Germany and triple that of Switzerland. France and Spain, meanwhile, had moderate levels of online shopping.A glance at the table provided reveals a number of clear differences between the major metro systems of the world in terms of age, scale and annual carrying capacity. One particularly interesting fact highlighted by the figure is that the more recently established metro systems are considerably shorter than the older ones. Completed in 1863, the London underground is the oldestthe longest, extending for 1100 kilometres.stark contrast, howeverand 2001 respectively– are far shorter. The formerthe latter just 14 kilometre s.With regard to yearly carrying capacity, the metro systems mentioned in the table vary greatly. The Tokyo metro is equipped to carry the largest number of passengers, at 1434 million. With 850 million, meanwhile, the Paris metro has the second largest carrying capacity. The systems with the smallest capacities are those of Kyoto and Washington DC, transporting just 11 million and 70 million people per year respectively.6.Given are two column graphs comparing the rates of secondary and tertiary education among males and females in various different parts of the world.compared with only 20 Asia, meanwhile, have moderate levels of secondary education – between 40 and 50 percent for both sexes. With regard to higher education, the figures are much lower throughout the world. IELTSWritingTask1--bysimonIELTS Writing Task 1: describe a processHere is some more advice for describing a process diagram. The question I'm using comes from Cambridge IELTS 6. It's also on this website(go down the page to test 3).Advice:1.Introduction: paraphrase the question statement (one sentence).2.Summary paragraph: write how many steps there are in each of the2 diagrams. You could also mention the first step and the last stepin each process (two sentences).3.Details: describe each step in the diagrams. We'll look at this nextweek. Here's my example introduction and summary paragraph:The figures illustrate the stages in the life of a silkworm and the process of producing silk cloth. There are four main stages in the life cycle of the silkworm, from eggs to adult moth. The process of silk cloth production involves six steps, from silkworm cocoon to silk material. Can you see the paraphrasing I have used? Next week we'll work on describing the stages in each process.paraphrasing:diagrams=figuresshow=illustratestages=stepsthe life cycle of the silkworm=the stages in the life of asilkworm production=process of producing...=process of ...production.there are ...stages=...involves ...steps.Hello Simon,I hope the paraphrasing aboved is correct. I enjoy you daily lessions very much. I am preparing for the IELTS test, and your lessons help me a lot. Thank you very much. Here I have some qustions about this lession. The following is my sentence:There are six stages in the process of silk cloth production, beginning with selecting cocoons. Then the qualified cocoons will* be boiled, unwind into* thread, and the thread will be twisted and finally weaved. My first question is that should I use future tense (will be boiled....) or present simple tense (is boiled)? The second question is that which preposition should i use? (the qualified cocoons will be unwind into* thread: should I use "into") ?I am looking forward to your reply. Thanks again.Best wishesTheresaHi Theresa,Your paraphrasing is perfect. Here are the answers to your questions:1. I would use the present simple to describe processes e.g. "The selected (not 'qualified') cocoons are boiled."2. I would avoid trying to use a preposition - I'd find another way to describe it e.g. "The cocoon is unwound, leaving a single thread". Or, "it is then possible to unwind the cocoon in order to have a thread of silk."Hope this helps,SimonWhen describing stages in a process:1.Start at the beginning. Use words that clearly show the stages (e.g.firstly, at the first stage, after that, next, following this,finally)./doc/a05597000.html,e the present simple tense./doc/a05597000.html,e the 'active' when someone or something does the action (e.g.the moth lays its eggs)./doc/a05597000.html,e the 'passive' when it is not important to say who or what doesthe action (e.g. the silk cloth is dyed). Here are some example sentences from last week's question: The life cycle of the silkworm begins when the moth lays its eggs. After 10 days the silkworm larva is born, and 4 to 6 weeks later the larva produces silk thread. At the first stage in the production of silk cloth the cocoon is boiled in water.Next, the silk thread is unwound and twisted. It is then dyed, to give it colour, or woven to make cloth and then dyed.I have highlighted the passive verbs and the words that mark stages.Advice: you can avoid difficult passive verbs like 'unwound' or 'woven' by writing 'it is then possible to unwind' or 'the thread is then ready for weaving'.IELTS Writing Task 1: describe a tableToday I'm going to look at a question from Cambridge IELTS book 5 (page 98). You can see the question and an example answer on this website. The problem with the example answer is that it is long (233 words) and quite complicated. I'm going to suggest some changes, starting with the introduction and summary paragraph.1. Introduction. Paraphrase the question (make small changes):The table shows data about the underground rail networks in six major cities.2. Summary paragraph. Look for the most noticeable feature or main trend:The table compares the six networks in terms of their age, size and the number of people who use them each year. It is clear that the three oldest underground systems are larger and serve significantly more passengers than the newer systems.Next week I'll add the final paragraphs.Last week I wrote the introduction and summary paragraph for this question. The example answer on the website is good, but it's 233 words long, it contains a few mistakes, and it's a bit complicated.I've now written the full essay. I've followed my usual 4 paragraph structure (see previous Task 1 lessons) and I've tried to make the essay clear and simple.I'd give my essay a band 9, but maybe I'm biased! Please let me know if you find any mistakes in my writing (nobody's perfect), or ask if anything is unclear.Describe a table (Cambridge IELTS 5, page 98)The table shows data about the underground rail networks in six major cities. The table compares the six networks in termsof their age, size and the number of people who use them each year. It is clear that the three oldest underground systems are larger and serve significantly more passengers than the newer systems. The London underground is the oldest system, having opened in 1863. It is also the largest system, with 394 kilometres of route. The second largest system, in Paris, is only about half the size of the London underground, with 199 kilometres of route. However, it serves more people per year. While only third in terms of size, the Tokyo system is easily the most used, with 1927 million passengers per year.Of the three newer networks, the Washington DC underground is the most extensive, with 126 kilometres of route, compared to only 11 kilometres and 28 kilometres for the Kyoto and Los Angeles systems. The Los Angeles network is the newest, having opened in 2001, while the Kyoto network is the smallest and serves only 45 million passengers per year.(185 words)Analysis of this essay:Simple paragraph structure: Introduction, summary paragraph, one paragraph about the 3 older systems, one paragraph about the 3newer systems.Select key information: There is too much information to include in ashort essay. I found it difficult to write less than 185 words. Notice that Itried to include only one (sometimes two) statistics for each city.Compare as much as possible: e.g. London is the oldest andlargest; Paris is about half the size but serves more people.Commas: Notice how I use commas to add extra information e.g. “…isthe oldest system, having opened in…” I often use the word “with” aftera comma to add a figure to the end of a sentence e.g. “…is the mostused, with 1927 million passengers.”ModelIt is a nice piece of writingI have tried one.The table reveals information on the Underground railway station among six cities during two centuries. As is shown by the table, London, the oldest railway system, has by farthe longest distance with 394 km, closely followed Paris, the second oldest underground railway , with 199 km, or equaling a haft distance of London system. This then preceded the opening of the railway system in Tokyo, Washington DC, Kyoto and Los Angeles.Interestingly, although Tokyo has the middle position as regards the kilometers of route with 155 km, it appears to be the highest system used by passengers, with 1927 million. This number is considerably higher than that of both Paris and London. These figures are 1191 and 775, respectively.Surprisingly, Kyoto and Los Angeles have the lowest number of either kilometers of route and passengers per year. In fact, the number of passengers using both of them is a great deal less than that of Washington DC, with approximately three times less , while the distance of Kyoto and Los Angeles railway system isnegligible (ranging from 11 to 28).In conclusion, London has the highest number of kilometers of route, while T okyo occurs to be the successful railway system with the overwhelming majority of passengers(193 ws)IELTS Writing Task 1: comparing (bar charts)。

25%=a quarter of, 50%=half of, >50%=a/the majority of.

The topic of the IELTS Task 1 and Task 2 for IELTS 15is not disclosed here, but I will provide a sample essaythat meets the requirements mentioned. Please note that the essay below is a sample and may not be directly related to the actual IELTS test prompts.Title: The Impact of Social Media on Society. In today's digital age, social media has become an integral part of our lives. It has revolutionized the waywe communicate, share information, and interact with others. This essay will explore both the positive and negative impacts of social media on society. On the positive side, social media has greatly enhanced communication and connectivity. It allows people from different corners of the world to connect and share ideas.Social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have made it easier for individuals to stay in touch with friends and family, regardless of geographical barriers. Moreover, social media has also facilitated the spread of information and awareness about important social issues. It has become a powerful tool for social movements and activism, enabling individuals to raise their voices and bring about positive change. However, social media also has its drawbacks. One of the major concerns is the impact it has on mental health. The constant exposure to carefully curated and often unrealistic representations of others' lives can lead to feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem. Additionally, the addictive nature of social media can result in decreased productivity, as people spend excessive amounts of time scrolling through their feeds instead of focusing on important tasks. Moreover, the spread of fake news and misinformation on social media platforms has become a significant issue, as it can easily influence public opinion and create social divisions.中文回答:社交媒体对社会的影响。
