李仕才一、阅读理解。

The news of Harper Lee’s second novel broke on the Internet. Go Set a Watchman would be published in July. Lee became a recluse(隐士) after the publication of her first book,To Kill a Mockingbird, in 1960. Although the author has been out of the public eye for more than 50 years, the wave that followed the announcement showed her novel’s beloved place in the American literary works. In 1991, the Book of the Month Club and the Library of Congress conducted a survey that made readers identify books that had made a difference in their lives.Lee’s book followed only The Bible. Alongside the works of Shakespeare and Twain, To Kill a Mockingbird remains one of the most widely taught books nationwide, reaching an estimated 70% of American public schools. What makes it such a perfect read for young people?English class is a place where young Americans come to know themselves. In the folds of dusty books, students can make contact with humanity beyond the superficial(肤浅的)conversations of the school hallways. Literature promises relief,a place to figure out one’s problems and get to know oneself better. To Kill a Mockingbird particularly distinguishes itself in this regard. It speaks in a child’s voice without treating its readership as children. People have called it an “impossible” achievement, a children’s book penned in the prose (散文) of a welleducated adult—it’s unlikely that a child like Scout could exist in the real world.B ut that’s exactly what makes it such a charming read for young people. It alludes to(暗指)the consciousness of a welleducated adult going through difficult realities, but shows it through the light and playful voice of a curious little girl.【解题导语】本文主要介绍了哈珀·李的小说深受美国读者的欢迎。

Unit 4 Global warming课时作业Ⅰ.阅读理解A(2019·山师附中模拟)Sometimes we may find that every week there are a lot of new stories about how climate change is affecting the planet,or new plans to battle its effects. But the concept itself isn't new at all—in fact, scientists have been exploring questions about climate change for almost 200 years. The idea of “greenhouse gases” goes back to 1824,when Joseph Fourier wondered what was regulating the earth's temperature.Fourier concluded that the atmosphere must be responsible for containing the heat absorbed from the sun and described it as a box with a glass lid.As light shines through the glass, the inside gets warmer as the lid traps the heat.As Fourier's ideas spread,it came to be called “the greenhouse effect”.Scientists continued to study the greenhouse effect. Not until a Swedish chemist named Svante Arrhenius came along, did scientists understand how global warming actually works. After years of work,Arrhenius determined that the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere did in fact have a direct effect on global temperatures.Arrhenius found that CO2,and other gases trap radiation, which warms the atmosphere.Arrhenius was the first to suspect that burning coal could contribute to the greenhouse effect. But Arrhenius welcomed the warming effect on the planet. At a lecture later that year,Arrhenius noted that creatures of a warmer earth “might live under a milder sky and in less barren surroundings”.While Arrhenius' findings won him the 1903 Nobel Prize in chemistry, scientists kept debating whether the greenhouse effect was increasing until 1950,when researchers finally began to find strong data supporting it.By the end of the 1950s,American scientists had been sounding the alarm on the long-term consequences of climate change.Climate change research has come a long way since Fourier first described the greenhouse effect-still,maybe Arrhenius should have been morecareful of what he wished for.【文章大意】本文主要讲述了科学家们对气候变化的众多探索。

Many teens have QQ, WeChat, or Weibo but little do a lot of teens know that they can be held responsible for everything they post for the rest of their lives. Everything you post online is part of a digital footprint that can always be traced (追踪) back to you. That includes every post, even every like, comment, favorite and forward that you have ever committed. All pictures you've posted or will post have been stored in a digital database, and it is the companies' right to keep all of these documents that you believe to have been deleted or hidden. With every post comes a consequence; whether it is good or bad, what you post could be seen by anyone. That is why you have to be very careful of what you decide to post or comment. If you think you are safe from Servite finding out about one funny comment you made six months ago on a meaningless picture, you are probably wrong. Recently, a senior, Aaron, at Servite learned this lesson the hard way this year. He wrote a series of ugly comments towards Connelly girls on a web page, ignoring potential consequences. This student, however, did have to face consequences from Servite as he was removed from all of his leadership roles in the school. Surprisingly enough, he fully agreed with his punishment handed down by the administration and fully understood why he was given such severe discipline (处罚).“When you agree tocome to Servite, you are agreeing to defend what Servite stands for,”the young man said. “That continues from 8 am to 2 pm. It's at all times.”So, next time you're about to post something you think could be received as offensive or inappropriate, think twice, or don't press the “Send”.【文章大意】本文是一篇议论文。

”I looked at my school headmaster in confusion.“I never mentioned wanting to go to Hungary.”And with that,my adventure started. My name is Jonathan Diamond and I just finished an amazing school exchange year in Hungary.Going on an exchange had always been my dream. When my high school offered anall-year program,I jumped at the opportunity. It would pay for almost everythingand all I had to do was buy a plane ticket.I knew where I wanted to go : Spain ,the country of dancers wearing flowing red dresses. So when I heard that I was going to Hungary ,I was pretty shocked. But I decided to make the best of it , since it was, after all , a once - in - a- lifetime opportunity. Before I knew it , I was on the airplane ,leaving for Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport , Hungary.I had difficult times when I almost gave up.Hungarian is the hardest languageon the planet.Cultural differences occasionally embarrassed both my peers and me.I had to give up eating carrots ,my beautiful favorite , for Hungarians think carrots are rubbish in their country. The change in the landscape was amazing ,looking nothing like skyscrapers , bullet trains , cars , and people in tiny houses that I had been accustomed to.Gradually ,I fell in love with the relaxing lifestyle ,the warm- hearted people , and getting home at 2 : 30 p .m.at the latest from school. And I was sad toleave on my very last day.Having the host family who took me as one of their own members was the best thing I ’ ve ever experienced. From my little sisters , I learned how to embrace life to its fullest. From my brothers I learned that it ’s OK for a boy to run around thehouse. From my host parents I learned to stay positive , to smile and that when youpick the right people and take their hands , suddenly , you become friends.【解题导语】本文是一篇记述文,叙述作者作为一个互换生在外国学习的经历和感觉。

Unit 4 Global warmingⅠ.阅读理解A(2020·“四省八校”高三第二次质量检测) Fires sweeping across the Amazon rainforest this year have been a hot topic as scientists and environmental groups are worried that they will worsen the climate change crisis and threaten biodiversity(生物多样性).As the largest rainforest in the world, the Amazon rainforest is often called “the lungs of the world”.It is also home to about 3 million species of plants and animals, and 1 million native people. The vast areas of the rainforest play an important role in the world's ecosystem because they absorb heat instead of it being reflected back into the atmosphere. They also store carbon dioxide and produce oxygen, ensuring that less carbon dioxide is released, mitigating the effects of climate change.“Any forest destroyed is a threat to biodiversity and people,” Thomas Lovejoy,an ecologist at George Mason University told National Geographic.“The overwhelming threat is that a lot of carbon dioxide goes into the atmosphere,”he stressed.“In the midst of the global climate crisis,we cannot afford more damage to a major source of oxygen and biodiversity. The Amazon rainforest must be protected,”U.N.Secretary General António Guterres said.Data from the National Institute for Space Research(INPE) show that the number of forest fires in Brazil quickly increased by 82 percent from January to August this year pared to the same period last year.A total of 71,497 forest fires were registered in the country in the first eight months of 2019,up from 39,194 in the same period in 2018,INPE said.“We estimate that the forest areas in the Brazilian Amazon rainforest have decreased by between 20 and 30 percent pared to the last 12 months,”Carlos Nobre,a researcher at the University of Sa~o Paulo, told German broadcaster Deutsche Welle.Brazil owns about 60 percent of the Amazon rainforest, whose degradation(恶化) could have severe consequences for global climate and rainfall. The extent of the area ruined by fires has yet to be determined, but the emergency has transcended(超出)Brazil's borders, reaching Peruvian,Paraguayan and Bolivian regions.语篇解读科学家和环保组织担心席卷亚马孙雨林的火灾将加剧气候变化危机,威胁生物多样性。

What are your retirement plans? Keep working? Get more exercise? Or learn something new? You may put them on hold. There’s a chance that, sooner or later, you might have to move further than you were thinking, as far as Mars (火星).On Thursday, National Geographic will show the first ever Mars show home, giving earthlings an idea of what their life could look like on the Red Planet. Set in the notsodistant year of 2037, the iglooshaped structure could be the home of your future. It shows a house built using recycled spacecraft parts and Martian soil, called regolith, which has been microwaved into bricks. Some parts of the home are recognisable—kitchen, bedroom—but there are fundamental differences that are vital for human survival. As the Martian atmosphere is around one hundredth as thick as the Earth’s, people will need permanent shelter from the sun and society will move largely indoors. Most buildings will be connected by underground passage s and the houses won’t have windows. The homes will have simulated solar lighting, or natural light that has been bent several times.Walls will need to be 10 to 12 feet thick, to protect people from dangerous rays that can pass through six feet of steel, and a double airlocked entrance to keep the home under proper pressure.“We don’t think of our houses as things that keep us alive, but on Mars your house will be a survival centre,” says Stephen Petranek, author of How We’ll Live on Mars. This is not just the stuff of scifi. “Ten to twenty years from now there will certainly be people on Mars,” Petranek says.“We’ve had the technology for 30 years to land people on Mars, but we haven’t had the will,” Petranek says. “But two main factors have completely swung publicattitudes.”The private companies’ participation has forced government agencies to up their game, and influential films such as Gravity and The Martian have caught society’s eye.【解题导语】本文要紧对人类以后在火星上居住作了相关介绍。

This time last year I entered two longdistance massparticipation swimming events, including the Jubilee River 10 km swim.At the last minute, just before both swims,I decided to pull out.The reality is,I live in fear of coming last.Last year, before the two events,I realized that I couldn't deal with coming last.I had looked at the swim times of those who had completed the previous year and calculated that,at my current swim pace,I would probably have come last in both.I just couldn't face it.But when next year came around,I decided to enter those same events again. For a few months,I trained hard, but I didn't get any faster. Then it was June 5,the day of the Jubilee River 10 km.The event started at 9:30 a.m.,and the swimmers were anxious and eager to start. As I swam along, the river was quiet and clean and everything was peaceful. The sun shone.Meadows(草地)rolled by and every now and then someone would wave at the scene unfolding in the water. As the day wore on,somehow I didn't mind that, predictably, almost everyone was ahead. There were at least some swimmers still near me,and although we shared the same river we quietly occupied our own spaces. As I concentrated on doing my own thing, watching the sky,the bank, the other swimming caps passing or not passing,I realized I was enjoying myself. In the end, four hours and 29 minutes after I'd started,I staggered(摇摇晃晃地走)out of the water and was greeted with a smile and a“well done”from the race organizer.I glanced back over my shoulder toward the water and noticed that there were a small handful of swimmers who were still to finish, behind me,out of a field of around 300 swimmers. But it didn't matter.I_was_just_relieved,proud_and_happy_to_finish.As I drove away,my thoughts turned to my next long race of the season and how much I was looking forward to it,my fears of coming last gently receding(渐渐远去).1.The author intended to quit swimming mainly because ________.A.she feared that she couldn't finish the two racesB.she was afraid that she would let family members downC.she was unwilling to accept the possibility of finishing lastD.she wasn't fully prepared for the two races2.The author hopes to convey the message that ________.A.never give up when facing challengesB.it is process that matters mostC.failure is the mother of successD.winners always take it all3.What does the underlined sentence mean in Paragraph 5?A.She took pride in leaving all the other swimmers behind.B.She was proud that she was not the last one in the race.C.She was glad to finish the race and had a sense of relief.D.She was proud to be praised by the organizer.4.It can be inferred from the end that the author is likely to ________.A.participate in another race without any hesitationB.analyze the reason why she failed in the raceC lose confidence completelyD.decide whether she is suitable for the race【解题导语】作者通过描述自己参加游泳比赛的经历告诉我们最后一名并不可怕,关键是要学会享受比赛的过程。

Priscilla Ouchidas' “energyefficient” house turned out to be a horrible dream. When she and her engineer husband married a few years ago, they built a $100 000,threebedroom home in California.Tightly sealed to prevent air leaks, the house was equipped with small doublepaned windows and several other energysaving features.Problems began as soon as the couple moved in,however.Priscilla's eyes burned. Her throat was constantly dry.She suffered from headaches and could hardly sleep. It was as though she had suddenly developed a strange illness.Experts finally traced the cause of her illness. The level of formaldehyde(甲醛)gas in her kitchen was twice the maximum allowed by federal standards for chemical workers. The source of the gas? Her new kitchen cupboards and walltowall carpeting. The Ouchidas are victims of indoor air pollution, which is not given sufficient attention partly because of the nation's drive to save energy. The problem itself isn't new.“The indoor environment was dirty l ong before energy conservation came along,” says Moschandreas, a pollution scientist at Geomet Technologies in Maryland.“Energy conservation has tended to accentuate the situation in some cases.”The problem appears to be more troublesome in newly constructed homes rather than old ones.Back in the days when energy was cheap, home builders didn't worry much about unsealed cracks.Because of such leaks, the air in an average home was replaced by fresh outdoor air about once an hour.As a result, the pollutants generated in most households seldom build up to dangerous levels.1.It can be learned from the passage that the Ouchidas' house ________.A.is well worth the money spent on its constructionB.is almost perfect from the point of energy conservationC.failed to meet energy conservation standardsD.was designed and constructed in a scientific way2.What made the Ouchidas' new house a horrible dream?A.Lack of fresh air.B.Poor quality of building materials.C.Gas leakage in the kitchen.D.The newly painted walls.3.Why were cracks in old houses not a big concern?A.Because indoor cleanness was not emphasized.B.Because they were technically unavoidable.C.Because environmental protection was more important.D.Because energy used to be inexpensive.4.This passage is most probably taken from an article entitled “________”.A.Energy ConservationB.Houses Building CrisisC.Air Pollution IndoorsD.Traps in Building Construction【解题导语】本文是一篇说明文,介绍了Ouchida夫妇响应国家号召建造了节能的房子,但是因为房子密不透风,使室内缺少新鲜空气,而且甲醛含量超标,室内空气污染,导致他们的身体出现了状况。

One of the main creators of the World Wide Web,Sir Tim BernersLee has warned that the fast growth of the Internet is also creating serious problems. He especially warns of false information being easily spread around the Internet,“A great danger is that it becomes a place where untruths start to spread more than truths,or it becomes a place which becomes increasingly unfair in some way.” In particular, he mentions the phenomena of blogging.Blogging enables friends and contacts to easily spread information. However, he argues that people may too easily trust information mentioned in a blog. This inaccurate information can then easily become an accepted truth on the Internet. He suggests that the most important development of the Internet will be in creating ways of allowing people to check the correctness of information by providing original sources.Sir Tim admits that this is an important challenge. It’s interesting to note that Wikipedia(维基百科) has had to take steps to prevent false information from being added to the biographies of living people. It’s easy for anybody to edit the open source. However, some people have pointed out that it has been used to spread false materials. In seeking to raise standards,Wikipedia has sought to stop the false materials. At the same time there is a growing view that the Internet has had a great effect on the way millions of people work. The last two years have seen a big growth in the use of the Internet. There appears no slowdown in the growth of the Internet with increasing access in the developing countries.Sir Tim says another major challenge will be to provide free Internet for everybody.Sir Tim has recently launched a new joint initiative(倡议) between the University of Southampton and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to create the first degree in Web science. The two schools hope to raise the standards of web content.【解题导语】本文是一篇说明文。

Everyone knows that death is natural, but do you have any idea of the process of dying? Modern scientists divide the process of dying into two stages —clinical or temporary death and biological death. Clinical death occurs when the vital organs, such as the heart or lungs, have stopped functioning, but have not suffered permanent damage. The organism can still be saved. Biological death occurs when changes in the organism lead to the “breaking up” of vital cells and tissues. Deat h is then unchangeable and final.Scientists have been seeking a way to prolong the period of clinical death so that the organism can remain alive before biological death occurs. The best method developed so far involves cooling the organism, combined with narcotic (麻醉) sleep. By slowing down the body’s metabolism (推陈出新), cooling delays the processes leading to biological death. To show how this works, scientists performed an experiment on a six-year-old female monkey called Keta. The scientist put Keta to sleep with a narcotic. Then they surrounded her body with ice-bags and began checking her body temperature. When it had dropped to 28 degrees the scientists began taking blood out from an artery (动脉). The monkey’s blood pressure decreased and an hour later both the heart and breathingstopped: clinical death set in. For twenty minutes Keta remained in this state. Her temperature dropped to 22 degrees. At this point the scientists pumped blood into an artery in the direction of the heart and started artifici al breathing. After two minutes Keta’s heart became active once more. After fifteen minutes, spontaneous (自发的) breathing began, and after four hours Keta opened her eyes and lifted her head. After six hours, when the scientists tried to give her a penicillin (青霉素) injection, Keta seized the syringe (注射器)and ran with it around the room. Her behavior differed little from that of a healthy animal.1.For a person who suffers from the clinical death _________.A. he is still very much aliveB. he cannot avoid final deathC. his most important organs are damaged foreverD. he still has the possibility of getting back to life2.Scientists try to make the time of clinical death longer in order to _________.A. cool the organismB. delay the coming of biological deathC. slow down the body’s metabolismD. bring vital cells and tissues back to active life3.The text mainly talks about _________.A. clinical death and biological deathB.an experiment on a monkeyC. the meaning of deathD. the process before death4.From the underlined sentence in the last paragraph we can know that _________.A.
