Nonverbal Communication

When you are in another country, it is important to know the language, but it

is equally important to know how to communicate nonverbally (不用语言地). Before

saying anything,

people communicate nonverbally or by making gestures. According to an

investigation (调查), only 30 to 35 percent of our communication is verbal. When people

don't know the language, the most common way to communicate is through gestures.

However, many gestures have different meanings, or no meaning at all, in different

parts of the world.

In the United States, for example, nodding your head up and down means “yes”.

In some parts of Greece and Turkey, however, this motion can mean “no”. In Southeast

Asia, nodding your head is a polite way of saying “I've heard you”.

In ancient Rome, when the emperor wanted to spare someone's life, he would put

his thumb up. Today in the United States, when someone puts his/her thumb up, it means

“Everything is all right”. However, in Sardinia and Greece, the gesture is insulting

and should not be used there.

In the United States, raising your clasped (握紧的) hand above your head means

“I'm the champion” or “I'm the winner”. It is the sign prizefighters make when

they win a fight. When a leading Russian statesman (政治家) made this gesture after

a White House meeting, Americans misunderstood and thought he meant he was a winner.

In Russia, however, it is a sign of friendship.

There are other nonverbal signals that you should be aware of when you go to another

country, such as the distance to maintain between speakers. Americans stand closer

to each other than English people. English people don't like touching somebody or being touched. Now in America, touch is important. Friends touch each other on the

arm, for example. They often put an arm around a friend when they say “Hello” or

“Goodbye”.

Some locals of Venice, Florida, were in for a surprise when they met their new

neighbors this summer. A family of coyotes (丛林狼) had moved into the yard of an

empty house on their street.

“Coyotes are a hot topic around here,” says Pam DeFouw, a wildlife rescue expert

in Venice. “We get lots of calls about them.” A hundred years ago, you wouldn't

have seen a coyote in Florida. For centuries, coyotes lived mainly in the grasslands

of what is now the western United States. Now, it's not unusual to see a coyote just

about anywhere in the U.S., even in major cities such as Chicago, Illinois, and New

York City. A recent study found that since 1950, the number of coyotes has greatly

increased more than any other carnivore (肉食动物) in North America. Researchers

握手是人与人问候的基本礼仪,但方式不同,表达的意义也大不相同。

The Secret of the Successful Handshake

The secret of the successful handshake is no secret anymore.

Management consultant Robert E. Brown explains what shaking hands

is all about in his book, The Art, the Power, the Magic: How to Read

Hands That Talk.

For example, to do the “AllAmerican Handshake”, you have to look into another person’s eyes, hold his or her whole hand, two or three times. According to Brown, this is the handshake

of a good listener and trustworthy person.

Politicians and salespeople often use the “TwoHanded Handshake” because it’s extrafriendly. They put their left hand on the other person’s arm or shoulder as they shake hands. This

can feel too friendly to some people, so it’s best to use it with good friends.

Watch out for people with handshakes that pull your fingers, or twist(扭转) your hand. If you
