The Thames
Tower Bridge
• London’s Tower Bridge is one of the most recognizable bridges in the world. Its Victorian Gothic style stems from a law that forced the designers to create a structure that would be in harmony with the nearby Tower of London. • Plans for the Tower Bridge were devised around 1876 when the east of London became extremely crowded and a bridge across the Thames in that area of the city seemed a necessity. It would take another eight years - and lots of discussions about the design - before construction of the bridge started.
Hyde Park
• is one of several royal parks in London connected to each other, forming one large green lung in the center of the city. • Hyde park covers more than 360 acres and hosts many large events, including celebrations and concerts. It is also a popular place for jogging, swimming, rowing, picnicking and even horse riding.
Fleet Street
• Fleet Street has been the meeting place for newspaper men since the 18th century, when writers met to talk in its coffee-houses. And up to now Fleet Street is the Street of news. Fleet Street is now the centre of journalists and newspaper men. Offices of most English daily and evening papers are situated in this street.Fleet Street is the centre of Britain's national newspapers. The Daily Telegraph and the Daily Express have their offices here, and The Times, The Guardian and many others are nearby. Publishing houses of many big foreign newspapers are also there. Fleet Street is busy day and night. It is packed with vans, cars, motorcycles, newsboys every day between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. when the latest news is ready to go out all over the world.
Piccadilly Circus
• Piccadilly Circus is a busy plaza in the heart of London at the junction of five major streets: Regent street, Shaftesbury Avenue, Piccadilly and Covent Street. • The Circus was created by John Nash as part of the future King George IV's plan to connect Carlton House - where the Prince Regent resided with Regent's Park.
Regent Park
• Part of London since the days of Henry VIII, Regent’s Park is one of the largest green areas in the city and home to a variety of attractions. • The area that would later be known as London’s Regent’s Park was first appropriated in 1538 by King Henry VIII to be used as hunting grounds. Originally called Marylebone Park, it remained a “royal chase” until 1646 after which it was mainly used as farmland.
Westminster Abbey
• Westminster Abbey, located near the Houses of Parliament, is more a historical site than a religious site. Since 1066 every royal coronation, with the exception of Edward V and Edward VIII has taken place in Westminster Abbey. The abbey also serves as the burial ground for numerous politicians, sovereigns and artists. The abbey is stuffed with tombs, statues and monuments. Many coffins even stand upright due to the lack of space. In total approximately 3300 people are buried in the Church and cloisters. Some of the most famous are Charles Darwin, Sir Isaac Newton and David Livingstone.
St. Paul’s Cathedral
• The majestic St. Paul's Cathedral was built by Christopher Wren between 1675 and 1711. It is one of Europe's largest cathedrals and its dome is only exceeded in size by that of the St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. • St Paul's Cathedral is an Anglican cathedral on Ludgat e Hill, the highest point in the City of London, and is the seat of the Bishop of London. The present building dates from the 17th century. It is generally reckoned to be London's fifth St Paul's Cathedral, all having been built on the same site since 604 A.D. • London’s St James’s Park is the oldest Royal Park in the city and the site of many special events. The 23-hectare park boasts beautiful gardens, a lake, and lots of wide open spaces. • The land on which St James’s Park sits was acquired by Henry VIII in 1532. At this site, he built St James’s Palace. Later, Elizabeth I held many special events in the park, and her successor, King Charles II, made many additions to the park, including more trees and grassy areas. He was the first to open the park to the public.
