Whenever I'm near the Zhonghua Gate, I try to imagine what it looked like back then with soldiers patrolling the ramparts and keeping watch. Pretty neat, right?Qinhuai RiverAnother one of my favorite Nanjing spots is the Qinhuai River area. The Qinhuai is a little river that runs right through the center of the old town. Along both sides of the river bank, there are all these traditional buildings, shops, restaurants, and even little boats that you can ride down the river on!Whenever my grandparents come to visit, we always take them down to the Qinhuai. We'll walk along the river, looking at all the people and stores, and then pick a little restaurant right on the water to have a delicious Nanjing snack meal. My grandpa loves getting bowls of warm soybean milk with deep-fried dough twists. I like getting grilled little green pancakes rolled up with stuff inside. It's all so yummy!At night, the whole Qinhuai River area gets decorated with beautiful red lanterns hanging from all the buildings. It looks sopretty with the lanterns glowing and reflecting off the river. Sometimes my parents and I will go for a nighttime stroll and watch people putting on traditional performances or playing music along the riverbank. It's called the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall, and it's a museum remembering a very tragic event that happened in Nanjing during World War 2.In 1937, the Japanese military invaded Nanjing and caused terrible violence and suffering for the people living in the city. Over 300,000 civilians and soldiers were killed in only a few weeks - it was a horrific massacre. The Memorial Hall has exhibits explaining what happened and honoring the victims and survivors.When I went there on a school field trip, I saw photographs, artifacts, and watch videos describing the atrocities. It was heartbreaking to learn about the cruelty and pain that occurred. But I'm glad there is a memorial to educate people about this event so that we never allow such evil to happen again.One of the most powerful things was walking through an area with thousands of victim's names and ages carved into the floor and walls.
