2009年7月，由于主要竞 争对手通用汽车公司破产 重组，出售了8个品牌中的 4个，市场份额下降，福特 汽车公司成为全美最大汽 车制造商，但和全球最大 的丰田仍有较大差距。福 特公司在2008年爆发的国 际金融危机中坚决拒绝了 美国联邦政府的注资援助 。
福特汽车公司成立于1903年6 月16日，那天亨利·福特和11 位合伙人在密歇根州递交了成 立公司的申请报告。福特汽车 成立后仅几个星期，便向加拿 大的一位客户售出了一部A型汽 车，从此开始了福特走向世界 的伟大历程。十年之间，福特 汽车已经销遍欧洲、南美和亚 洲。
1978年11月，福特公司设立“中国事 务办公室”，以探求在中国成立一家 生产重型卡车合资企业的可能性。 1979年中，福特向中国出售了750辆F 系列卡车。这是自1949年以来美国汽 车第一次销售到中国来。
1993年6月，福特在中国建立零 售业务，初期委派了首批5家经销 商在中国销售福特汽车。目前， 福特拥有10多个经销点，40多个 特许授权的服务设施及3个全球零 部件分销商，为各市场提供更佳 的服务
由1914年至今不断生产福特汽车 的Rouge，在新世纪讲求高效率环 保政策，以及大部分福特汽车的生 产线已迁移到其他厂房进行之时， 正面临是否应该继续存在的问题。 福特打算将这间有接近90年历史的 车城改建重修，使其能继续成为全 球汽车生产业的典范。
于1903年创立的福特汽车，创立人 亨利·福特一直希望汽车可以由工人 阶级拥有，但传统的制车方法只会令 车价高昂。虽然当时的制车方法已有 高效率的所谓流动生产线，但福特觉 得这个概念可以加以改善，使汽车生 产的成本大大减低，他说过：“如果 供应商产品的价格，不能让我们生产 成本低廉的汽车的话，那么我们只好 靠自己生产配件。

1926年后，销售的T型车基本都配置了电子启动 装置。 福特T型车的引擎T型车有一个独特的电磁点 火系统，但由于产生电压过低需要点火线圈的加强。 为了更方便地启动，它同时也可通过手动的方式切换 为独立的干电池系统点火，在高速运转的时候转换回 电磁点火系统，这个设计的优点为即使电池组耗尽也 可继续运行。火花由通过一个安装在引擎前方凸轮轴 端部的低电压“计时器”分配到火化塞产生，这种“ 计时器”就是现代的分电器的前身，它将电流导引安 装在驾驶室前部一个箱子内的4个振动线圈，点火的 计时调节是通过借助转向柱上的杠杆装置人工转动计 时器来实现的。做出到电磁点火或电池组点火之间最 好的选择与在不同载荷与速度条件下最理想的计时方 式需要相当的技巧。 该车的10加仑的油箱安置在前座下的汽车骨架上，另有一种考虑了美国 农民使用需要的设计配备了改进型化油器可以使用乙醇作为燃料。由于燃料依 靠重力作用从油箱流到化油器，故T型车当其中燃料较少时，不能翻爬陡坡， 通常的解决方法是将车倒着开上坡去。1926年后，大多数汽车都将油箱移至前 方的风罩下。
在该车的生产历程中经历了数次重大的变化。早 期的型号的冷却器，车灯和许多小部件都是由黄铜制 成，样式单一，大多数车都为敞篷旅行车，且没有配 备车门。后期车型逐渐丰富，在原有底盘下开发了轿 车、跑车、皮卡、卡车等车型。车前灯由最初的乙炔 灯发展为电气灯。T型车运用了当时的许多先进科技， 例如钒钢，使其的耐久性表现十分出色。80年后的今 天，许多部件仍可正常使用。
