Besides owning some cooking tools and farming equipment, the Tarahumaras exist much as they did before the Spanish arrived in the 1600s. They live in caves or in small houses made of stone and wood, and they eat what they can grow on the dry land.Ten years ago, linguist(语言学家) James Copeland entered the world of the Tarahumaras to study their language and culture. Since then, he has been visiting the Tarahumaras three or four times a year. Tarahumara is not a written language, so part of Copeland's project was to learn to speak Tarahumara so that he could deal directly with the people. "There are no language police," Copeland says. "Children are seldom corrected by their parents. They learn by observation of speech in conversations and by imitation."Copeland learned the language through his frequent exposure(暴露) to it and by analyzing the grammar. His linguistic skills and mastery of German, Spanish, French, and Russian, plus a partial knowledge of twenty other languages, also helped. Drawing on his research, Copeland plans to produce a Tarahumara grammar book in English and perhaps one in Spanish. The idea to study the Tarahumaras came to Copeland in 1984 when he discovered that very little research had been done on their language. He got in touch with a Tarahumara Indian called Lornezo Gonzalez through a social worker who worked with the Tarahumaras in the border town of Juarez, Mexico. At first, Gonzalez was very reluctant to cooperate. He told Copeland that no amount of money could buy his language. But after Copeland explained to him what he intended to do with his research and how it would benefit the Tarahumaras, Gonzalez agreed to help and took Copeland to his village. "Over a period of a year our relationship became closer and warmer," says Copeland. "Thanks to him, the Tarahumaras started trusting us and understood what we were doing."1. AIn my very first job with some 1archaeologists,I wasn’t digging objects out of the ground, instead I was employed as an artist, drawing what they found. However,I was soon more interested in the stories behind the objects than in drawing them and that’s how my career in archaeology started. I still draw what I find in my work as a specialist on the Silk Road, the old trade route running from Egypt to Mongolia, and I also work on some underwater projects too.In archaeology,my all-time hero is an American called Raphael Pumpelly. I first heard about him when I was a student on a trip to Turkmenistan,a country right in the heart of Asia. To getaround the country,I had to learn Russian so that I could speak to the local people. When I got there I thought,“Wow! I’m one of the first Americans here!” Then an old man told me about an American archaeologist,Raphael Pumpelly, who was there doing the same thing over 100 years ago.Archaeology’s in my family. My wife’s in the same 2profession,and,although our two boys aren’t interested in the future in archaeology themselves,we’ve been on some great digs together and they love what we do because they get to travel with us. Last summer,we took them to Lake Titicaca in South America,in the high areas of the Andes mountain range. My best experience was when I was digging on the Egyptian Red Sea coast. There’s very little rain and it’s so dry that everything is kept as it was. In an old house, where the owner used to store goods from the ships that came in,I picked up a 700-year-old mat in front of the house and there, under it,after all that time, was the house key with the owner’s name carved on it. It felt like he could be on his way home any minute! And I thought,“Hey,I do just that. This man’s not much different to me!”

以when, where, what, which, who, how much/many等疑问词引出的问题。

A(2019山东潍坊三月一模,B)Hawking was perhaps the most famous scientist in the world when he died in 2018 at age 76.His 1988 book, A Brief History of Time, sold ten million copies and made him an unlikely superstar even to people who sweated over high school science.Humor was always a big part of Hawking's effort to bring physics to the masses. In his 2010 book, The Grand Design, for instance, he recounts how, in 1277, the Catholic Church declared scientific laws such as gravity to be wrong, since they seemed against God's idea.“Interestingly,”the text adds jokingly, “Pope John was killed by the effects of the law of gravity a few months later when the roof of his palace fell in on him.”Hawking was only 21 when he was diagnosed with the disease ALS. For most people, the condition would have been a disaster. But Hawking rolled over hardship as if it were just a pebble under his wheelchair.“Life would be tragic,”he once said, “if it weren't funny.”He kept smiling even though he spent more than 50 years in a wheelchair.“He loved adventure and fun,”says Mlodinow, who once took Hawking on a punt-boat trip down the River Cam in Cambridge, England, despite the obvious danger of the boat turning over.“You know about when he went on the Vomit Comet? It's a plane that flies in a parabolic(抛物线的)path so you are weightless, like you are in space. A lot of people vomit, but he loved that sort of thing.”And he was 65 at the time.Hawking's greatest hit, humor-wise, was probably the cocktail party he threw in 2009. It was a “welcome reception for future time travelers,”he said, so naturally, he sent out the invitations the day after the party. No one showed up yet. “Maybe one daysomeone living in the future will find the information and use a wormhole time machine to come back to my party, proving that time travel will one day be possible,” Hawking explained. And if that happens, don't be surprised if Hawking is there too. After all, he never missed a chance to have fun.1.What can we learn about Pope John?A.He was not in favor of God.B.He was a scientist like Hawking.C.He was opposed to the law of gravity.D.He was killed due to the discovery of gravity.2.What drove Hawking to go on the Vomit Comet?A.His fondness of adventure.B.The invitation from his friend.C.The requirements of his work.D.His desire for recovery from ALS.3.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A.The cocktail party was a great success.B.The possibility of time travel was not proved.C.Hawking was a man who enjoyed holding parties.D.The wormhole time machine was used at that time.
