1.IKEA is the world’s largest furniture retailer, and the man behind it is Ingvar Kamprad, one of the world’s most successful entrepreneurs. Born in Sweden in 1926, Kamprad was a natural business man. As a child, he enjoyed selling things and made small profits from selling matches, seeds and pencils in his community. When Kamprad was 17, his father gave him some money as a reward for his good grades. Naturally he used it to start up a business – IKEA.2.IKEA’s name comes from Kamprads’initials(I.K.)and the place where he grew up (E and A ). Today IKEA is known for its modern, minimalist furniture, but it was not a furniture company in the beginning. Rather, IKEA sold all kinds of miscellaneous goods. Kamprad’s wares included anything that he could sell for profits at discounted prices, including watches, pens and stockings.3.IKEA first began to sell furniture through a mail-order catalogue in 1947. the furniture was all designed and made by manufactures near Kamprad’s home. Initial sales were very encouraging, so Kamprad expanded the product line. Furniture was such a successful aspect of the business that IKEA became solely a furniture company in 1951.4.In 1953 IKEA opened its first showroom in Almhult, Sweden. IKEA is known today for its spacious stress with furniture in attractive settings, but in the early 1950s, people ordered from catalogues. Thus response to the first showroom was overwhelming: people loved being able to see and try the furniture before buying it. This led to increased sales and the company continued to thrive. By 1955, IKEA was designing all its own furniture.5.In 1956 Kamprad saw a man disassembling a table to make it easier to transport. Kamprad was inspired. The man had given him a great idea: flat packaging. Flat packaging would mean lower shipping costs for IKEA and lower prices for customers. IKEA tried it and sales soared. The problem was that people had to assemble furniture themselves, but over time, even this grew into an advantage for IKEA. Nowadays, IKEA is often seen as having connotations of self-sufficiency. This image has done wonders for the company, leading to better sales and continued expansion.6.Today there are over 200 stores in 32 countries. Amazingly, Ingvar Kamprad has managed to keep IKEA a privately-held company. In 2004 he was named the world’s richest man. He currently lives in Switzerland and is retired from the day-today operations of IKEA. IKEA itself, though, just keeps on growing.1. Paragraph 2 ____.2. Paragraph 3 ____.3. Successful Language LearnersSome people seem to have a knack for learning languages. They can pick up new vocabulary, master rules or grammar, and learn to write in the new language more quickly than others. They do not seem to be any more intelligent than others, so what makes language learning so much easier for them? Perhaps if we take a close look at these successful language learners, we may discover a few of the techniques which make language learning easier for them.First of all, successful language learners areindependent learners. They do not depend on the book or the teacher; they discover their own way to learn the language. Instead of waiting for the teacher to explain, they try tofind the patterns and the rules for themselves. They are good guessers who look for clues and form their own conclusions. When they guess wrong, they guess again. They try to learn from mistakes.Successful language learning is active learning. Therefore, successful learners do not wait for a chance touse the language; they look for such a chance. They find people who speak the language and they ask these people to correct them when they make a mistake. They will try anything to communicate. They are not afraid to repeat what they hearor to say strange things; they are willing to make mistakes and try again. When communication is difficult, they can accept information that is inexact or incomplete. It is moreimportant for them to learn to think in the language than to know the meaning of every word. Finally, successful language learners are learners with a purpose. They want to learn the language because they are interested in the language and the people who speak it. It is necessary for them to learn the language in order to communicate with these people and to learn from them. They find it easy to practice using the language regularly because they want to learn with it.What kind of language learner are you? If you are a successful language learner, you have probably been learning independently, actively, and purposefully. On the other hand, if your language learning has been less than successful, you might as well try some of the techniques outlined above.1. Paragraph 1__________2. Paragraph 2__________3. Maglev TrainsA few countries are using powerful electromagnets to develop high-speed trains, called maglev trains. Maglev is short for magnetic levitation1, which means that these trains float over a guide way using the basic principles of magnets to replace the old steel wheel and track trains. If you’ve ever played with magnets, you know that opposite poles attract and like poles repel each other. This is the basic principle behind electromagnetic propulsion. Electromagnets are similar to other magnets in that they attract metal objects, but the magnetic pull is temporary. You can easily create a small electromagnet yourself by connecting the ends of a copper wire to the positive and negative ends of an AA-cell battery. This creates a small magnetic field. If you disconnect either end of the wire from the battery, the magnetic field is taken away. The magnetic field created in this wire-and-battery experiment is the simple idea behind a maglev train rail system. There are three components to this system: A large electrical power source, metal coils lining a guide way or track, and large guidance magnets attached to the underside of the train. The big difference between a maglev train and a conventional train is that maglev trains do not have anengine-at least not the kind of engine used to pull typical train cars along steel tracks4. The engine for maglev trains is rather innoticeable. Instead of using fossil fuels, the magnetic field created by the electrified coils in the guideway walls and the track combines to propel the trains. The magnetized coil running along the track, called a guideway, repels the large magnets on the train’s undercarriage, allowing the train to levitate between 1 to 10 cm above the guideway. Once the train is levitated, power is supplied to the coils within the guideway walls to create a unique system of magnetic fields that pull and push the train along the guideway. The electric current supplied to thecoils in the guideway walls is constantly alternating to change the polarity of the magnetized coils. This change in polarity causes the magnetic field in front of the train to pull the vehicle forward, while the magnetic field behind the train adds more forward thrust.Maglev trains float on a cushion of air, eliminating friction. This lack of friction allows these trains to reach unprecedented ground transportation speeds of more than 500 kph, or twice as fast as the fastest conventional train. At 500 kph, you could travel from Paris to Rome in just over two hours.23. Paragraph 3 _____24. Paragraph 4 _____25. Paragraph 5 _____26. Paragraph 6 _____A. Breaking the News about Your Diagnosis1 When I was diagnosed with breast cancer nearly a year ago, I found myself at a loss for words at first. Over time, however, I developed some pointers (点子), which I hope willhelp others.2 During the first few weeks of emotional "aftershocks" (余悸) from the diagnosis, I found myself unable to utter the word "cancer". Still, I wanted to share the news with my relatives and friends who already knew that I'd had a biopsy (活检) and were anxiously awaiting my telephone call. I did the best I could, which is all anyone can do in this situation. When I called them, I said, "What we feared has happened." They immediately knew what I meant.3 Nearly a year after my diagnosis, I find myself more comfortable telling people "1 was diagnosed with cancer" instead of saying '"1 have cancer." On some deep level, Idon't want to "own" this illness. Choose language that suits you when you share your news. And keep in mind that there is no one "right" way of doing this.4 Most people, after hearing your announcement, will be curious about the next step. They may wonder if you will be undergoing radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy (化疗).They may wonder where and when you will have surgery. Answer their questions as best you can, but keep in mind that "1 don't know right now" or "I'm still in too much shock to think about that" are good answers.5 Wait until the initial wave of strong emotions has passed before telling the children in your life. Don't overwhelm (使不知所措) very young children with too much information. Assure them that, even if you will be in the hospital for a while, they will see you every day and they will be cared for. Older children may already fear the word "cancer", so be prepared to reassure them. Old Man Myths and Realities1 When does a middle-aged man become an old man?Officially, of course, it's when we reach retirement age. But, as we all know, this is a fairly blunt(生硬的)method of decision making. As life expectancy(预期寿命)increases, retirement planning needs to be changed. This is becausebeing an old man today is very different from what it was a generation or so ago.2 Sixty-five is the new middle-aged man. These dayspeople are talking about the young-old, that is ages 70-75, and those over 75 as the old-old. The young-old frequently continue in good health and maintain strong links withfriends and family. The old-old have a much higher chance of poor health and social isolation.3 Although men are living longer, there are still moreold women than old men. This fact alone should arouseinterest as to why. Relatively little is actually known about why this is the case or about the experiences of the old man. Sure, we are aware that the old man experiences anxiety, financial problems, loneliness, etc., but that's really about all we know.4 It is usually believed that the old man often complains about their health. In fact, most rate their health as good even though most are diagnosed with at least one chronic illness. The physical health of the old man is strongly affected by their health behavior when they were younger.1 Paragraph 1__________.2 Paragraph 2__________.3 Paragraph 3__________.4 Paragraph 4__________.A New definitions of the old manB Changing concept of the old manC Health of the old manD Happy old man and sad old manE Limited knowledge of the old man's experiencesF Contempt for the old man5 Nowadays men generally live longer than__________.6 A man in his mid-60s is now regarded as__________.7 More research should be done on the experiencesof__________.8 Most old men consider themselves to be__________.A in good healthB in the pastC in the wrongD the old manE a middle-aged manF a young man【参考答案】1.

3Screen Test1. Every year millions of women are screened with X-rays to pick up signs of breast cancer. If this happens early enough, the disease can often be treated successfully. According to a, survey published last year, 21 countries have screening programmes. Nine of them, including Australia, Canada, the US and Spain, screen women under 50.2. But the medical benefits of screening these younger women are controversial, partly because the radiation brings a small risk of inducing cancer. Also, younger women must be given higher doses of X-rays because their breast tissue is denser.3. Researchers at the Polytechnic University1 of Valencia analysed the effect of screening more than 160, 000 women at 11 local clinics. After estimating the women’s cumulative dose of radiation, they used two models to calculate the number of extra cancers this would cause.4. The mathematical model recommended by Britain’s National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB)predicted that the screening programme would cause 36 cancers per 100,000 women, 18 of them fatal. The model preferred by the UN Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation led to a lower figure of 20 cancers.5. The researchers argue that the level of radiation-induced cancers is “not very significant” compared to the far larger number of cancers that are discovered and treated. The Valencia programme, they say, detects between 300 and 450 cases of breast cancer in every 100,000 women screened.6. But they point out that the risk of women contracting cancer from radiation could be reduced by between 40 and 80 percent if screening began at 50 instead of 45, because they would be exposed to less radiation. The results of their study, they suggest, could help “optimise the technique”for breast cancer screening.7. “There is a trade-off between the diagnosticbenefits of breast screening and its risks,” admits Michael Clark of the NRPB. But he warns that the study should be interpreted with caution. “On the basis of the current data, for every 10 cancers successfully detected and prevented there is a risk of causing one later in life. That’s why radiation exposure should be minimised in any screening programme.”

Voice Your Opinion:Change Is Needed in Youth Sports
Everywhere you look, you see kids bouncing a basketball or waving a tennis racquet (网球拍).And these kids are getting younger and younger. In some countries, children can compete on basketball, baseball, and volleyball teams starting at age nine.(46) And swimming and gymnastics classes begin at age
four,to prepare children for competition.
It's true that a few of these kids will develop into highly skilled athletes and may even become members of the national Olympic teams.(47) This emphasis on competition in sports
is having serious negative effects.
Children who get involved in competitive sports at a young age often grow tired of their sport. Many parents pressure
their kids to choose one sport and devote all their time to it.(48) But 66 percent of the young athletes wanted to play more than one sport-for fun.
Another problem is the pressure imposed by over-competitive parents and coaches.Children are not naturally competitive. In fact,a recent study by Paulo David found that most children don't even understand the idea of competition until they are seven years old.(49)The third, and biggest, problem for young athletes is the lack of time to do their homework, have fun,be with friends—in short, time to be kids. When they are forced
to spend every afternoon at sports practice, they often start to hate their chosen sport.A searchers found that 70 percent of kids who take part in competitive sports before the of
twelve quit before they turn eighteen.(50) Excessive competitive away all the enjoyment.
Need to remember the purpose of youth sports – to give kids
a chance to have developing strong, healthy bodies.
A.But what about the others, the average kids?
B.The youth soccer organization has teams for children as young as five.
C.A survey found that 79 percent of parents of young athletes wanted their children concentrate on one sport.
D.Very young kids don't know why their parents are pushing them so hard.
E.Sports for children have two important purposes.
F.Many of them completely lose interest in sports.
本句前…kids are getting younger and younger. In some countries, children can compete…start-ing at age nine,而后面…swimming and gymnastics classes begin at age four,这些都
It's true that a few of these kids will develop into highly skilled athletes and may even become members of the national Olympic teams的a few指出了少部分孩子运动竞技成绩好,此处笔锋一转,转向绝大部分其他孩子。
Many parents pressure their kids to choose one sport and devote all their time to it,后面 But 66 percent of the young athletes wanted to play more than one sport for fun,说明父母和孩子对待体育活动的态度不同,父母希望孩子能专注一项运动,而孩子却希望能从多项活动中获得乐趣,将A项内容补入后,进一步说明父母的态度,正好与后面But一句形成转折关系,所以本题选A.
本句前一句…most children don't even understand the idea of competition until they are seven years old说明很多孩子直到7岁才能理解竞赛的含义,补入F项内容后进一步说明幼小的孩子不明白竞赛的含义,所以本题选F.
70 percent of kids…quit before they turn eighteens Excessive competitiveness took away all the enjoyment说明过度强调竞赛使人失去运动的乐趣,所以此处选C 项,补充前面的研究结果,且与后文形成递进关系。
故选C.。
