EN 60335-2-9

EN 60335-2-91. IntroductionThe EN 60335-2-9 standard is a part of the IEC 60335 series, which sets the safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances. This specific standard focuses on the safety of electric grills and toasters. It provides guidelines for the manufacturers to ensure that their products are safe to use and do not pose any risks to the users.2. ScopeThe scope of EN 60335-2-9 standard covers electric grills and toasters intended for household and similar purposes. It specifies requirements for the design, construction, and testing of these appliances to prevent hazards such as electric shock, fire, and mechanical injury.3. DefinitionsThis section provides definitions for various technical terms used throughout the standard. It helps to ensure a clear understanding of the requirements and specifications mentioned in the document. Some important definitions include:•Electric Grill: A heating appliance designed for cooking food by direct exposure to radiant electric heat.•Toaster: An appliance designed for toasting slices of bread or other similar foods using electric heating elements.4. General RequirementsThe EN 60335-2-9 standard lays down general safety requirements that apply to all electric grills and toasters. These requirements include the following:•Electrical Safety: The appliances should be designed and manufactured to ensure that there is no risk of electric shock to the user. This includes usingappropriate insulation materials, providing propergrounding, and ensuring that the electrical components are properly secured.•Mechanical Safety: The appliances should be constructed in such a way that there are no hazards due to moving parts. This includes ensuring that the parts areproperly guarded and that there are no sharp edges orpoints that could cause injury.•Thermal Safety: The appliances should be designed to minimize the risk of burns or fire. This includes usingappropriate materials that can withstand hightemperatures and providing proper insulation to prevent heat transfer to external surfaces.5. Specific RequirementsThis section of the standard specifies the specific safety requirements for electric grills and toasters. It covers various aspects such as:•Marking and Instructions: The appliances should be marked with appropriate warnings and instructions for safe use. This includes providing information on propercleaning, maintenance, and usage guidelines.•Protection against Electric Shock: The appliances should have appropriate measures in place to preventelectric shock. This includes proper insulation of live parts, use of double insulation, and provision of groundconnection.•Protection against Overheating: The appliances should have built-in mechanisms to prevent overheating. This includes thermal cut-offs, temperature controls, and proper ventilation to dissipate heat.•Protection against Fire: The appliances should be designed to minimize the risk of fire. This includes usingfire-resistant materials, providing adequate clearancearound heating elements, and incorporating safety features such as automatic shut-off in case of overheating.6. Testing and ComplianceThe EN 60335-2-9 standard specifies various testing procedures to ensure compliance with the safety requirements. The manufacturers are required to perform tests such as electrical resistance, insulation resistance, temperature rise, stability, and endurance tests.7. ConclusionThe EN 60335-2-9 standard provides comprehensive safety requirements for electric grills and toasters. By complying with this standard, manufacturers can ensure that their products are safe to use and do not pose any risks to the users. It is crucial for both manufacturers and consumers to adhere to these safety guidelines to prevent accidents and promote product safety.。

Hazards

Clause 8.1.1:
Replace the third paragraph by the following: Test probe B and probe 18 of IEC 61032 are applied in turn without appreciable force, the appliance being in every possible position. Through openings, the test probe is applied to any depth that the probe will permit and is rotated or angled before, during and after insertion to any position. If the opening does not allow the entry of the probe, the force on the probe in the straight position is increased to 20 N when probe B is used or 10 N when probe 18 is used. If the probe then enters the opening, the test is repeated with the probe in the angled position.
