Across the street was a gas station, which was closed for Christmas, but I noticed a family standing under the narrow overhang to keep dry. I wondered briefly why they were there but then forgot about them as I couldn’t wait to see my gifts.Once I got home, there was hardly any time to enjoy my gifts. My grandparents were still waiting for us to have Christmas dinner together at their house. As we drove down the highway, I noticed that the family was still there. The closer we got to my grandparents’ house, the slower the car went. Suddenly, my father U-turned and said, “I can’t stand it!” “What?” asked my mother. “It’s those people back there at the gas station, standing in the rain.”When my father pulled into the station, I saw there were five of them: the parents and three children—two girls and a small boy. Then we learned that the family was waiting for the bus to Birmingham, where the man planned to find a job.“Well, that bus won’t come along for several hours. Winborn’s just a few milesaway, and there is a shed (棚) with a cover there,” my father advised. “I will run you up there.”Then they climbed into our car,. My father looked back and asked the children if Father Christmas had found them. Three sad faces gave him his answer.“Well, Father Christmas said he was having trouble finding you, so he just left your toys at my house this morning. Let’s go to get them first,” my father said. All at once, the three children’s faces lit up.When we arrived at our house, one girl spied a lovely doll, that little boy took a ball, and the other girl picked up something else. In those days she had always picked up hitchhikers (搭便车者), until the day her sister told her of a friend who had been killed by a hitchhiker, all because she had stopped out of kindness to help him during a storm. Her family worried about her safety over the hitchhikers until the family heard her promise: “No more hitchhikers!”Then, one night, she saw a man waving. She slowed down for him, but now as he ran toward the car in the dark she shook with fear. Yet she thought that if he was truly in need she couldn’t leave him here in this storm. The stranger explained that his car was broken, and she told him to get in the car. They drove for an hour into the next city and she took him to a telephone booth (公用电话亭). When he reported back to her that a family member would soon come for him, she wished him well and left.Tears fell on her cheeks as she drove away. Try to serve your meals at the same place at the same time of a day. Keep the meal itself as the main event and leave the toys and television for later use.Snacks are also important. We can give our body and brain energy by eating snacks between meals. Children are often hungriest in the afternoon after school andin the evening.Offer snacks at regular time between meals. A.It’s official. Denmark—as well as being the world’s best country to live in for women with the second-happiest people and one of the best healthcare systems in Europe—has the most contented babies. Or, at least, the ones who cry the least. According to research published in the Journal of Pediatrics, Danish, German and Japanese babies cry the least, while British, Canadian and Italian babies cry the most.“I’m not surprised,” Danish parenting expert and co-author of The Danish Way of Parenting Jessica Alexander tells me. “The first year of a child’s life is considered so important in Denmark Danish parents are much less stressed because they get good maternity and paternity leave(孕产假). The atmosphere is much calmer and, if mothers are getting more time off, that goes hand in hand with less stress, more contact, more routines and less crying.” She paused before throwing in a final tip: “Oh, and Danish babies sleep outdoors a lot.”In Denmark, a woman is given four weeks pregnancy leave followed by 52 weeks of paid leave that can be shared between parents. And Alexander thinks there is another important reason why Danish babies cry less: breastfeeding. “It’s just the done thing in Denmark,”she says of a country that has the world’s highest breastfeeding rates. “In others countries, there are continual discussions about whether you shouldor shouldn’t breastfeed. In Denmark, breastfeeding has never gone out of style. And everyone does it for a year.”For Iben Ssandahl, Alexander’s co-author, it comes down to the Danish attitude to life in general. “We are honest and pure people,”she tells me. “We are surrounded by social support and are less likely to become angry, sad or annoyed when our babies are crying. And we are good at embracing(拥抱) all kinds of feelings, so we aren’t scared. Instead, we try to connect with the babies when they cry. It’s how babies communicate and it’s about trying to understand it.”21. Which of the following can make a baby cry less?A. An effective healthcare system.B. More company from a parent.C. It was used during commercial breaks, the line at the bank, the three minutes it takes the popcorn to pop...I broke the most sacred technology rule I had with my kids --- not in the bedroom.I didn't just take my smart phone in the bedroom. I charged it there.Soon, that device was the first thing that I grabbed after waking --- checking the weather, the news, my email, my messages, all before going to the bedroom or letting out the dog.Eventually, it moved from my purse to my pocket. I glanced up from my screen and saw her looking right at me.I started apologizing, but she smiled: "My friends are much better at multitaskingonline." Ouch! The next morning, I did something that was more painful than I'd like to admit.I deleted all the apps. When I finished, my smart phone was just a phone again.
