Plants are very important living things. Life could not go on if there were no plants. This is because pla nts can make food from air ,water and sun light. Ani mals and man cannot make food from air , water and sun light. Ani mals get their food by eat ing pla nts and other ani mals. Therefore animals and man need

plants in order to live. This is why we find that there are so many plants around us. If you look carefully at the pla nts around you, you will find that there are two kinds of plants : flowering plants and non-flowering

plants. Flowering plants can make seeds. The seeds are protected by the fruits. Some fruits have one see ,some have two three or four , and some have many seeds. But a few fruits have no seeds at all. An

example of a fruit without seeds is the banana fruit. Most non-flowering plants do not grow from seeds. They grow from spores (胚芽)。 Spores are very small. Some spores are so small and light that they can float in the air. We may say that spores are quite the same as seeds. Whe n these spores are all on wet and shady pla (they usually grow into new pla nts.

员),though --just an En glish teacher in Japa n.

I came to Japa n two years ago, and did n' t thi nk I would stay, but Japa n has that effect on you. People ofte n end up liv ing here Ion ger tha n they pla nned. I thi nk it' s best to teach, i n a bigger city where there are other foreigners to mix with, rather than a small town where English teachers often compla in of feeli ng like a goldfish in a bowl. Many people choose to live in Tokyo, of course, which is good for tile nightlife factor. But I'd say that for general quality of living, cities of neither too large nor too small, like Sapporo where I live, are better choices.

I teach En glish privately, which means r m my own boss. If you want to devote yourself to private teach in g, it's well worth doing a TEFL course first, because your less ons will be much better for it. The problem with private teaching is finding students; it took me a year to build up a full schedule (日程表)of private lessons, so I started out teaching in schools part-time.

Most of my foreign friends here work full-time for big English conversation schools. The salary is fine to live on, but whether you can save money depe nds on how much going out and traveli ng you do here.

The schools are reluctant to take time off -- even teachers with tickets for the En gla nd-Arge nti na game had trouble gett ing the day off.

In a recently published book, I came across some exercises with interesting names such as fishbone diagrams, lotus flowers, and clustering. As I used these exercises in my classes, I noticed that stude nts were in terested. They said more and wrote more. They enjo yed express ing their ideas and shari ng them in groups. They were no Ion ger passively waiting for the bell, but actively took part in the less on. I find that creativity (创新)ca n act as a way to in crease participati on and improve fluency (流利程度).

Creativity has become a popular word in rece nt years. Scholar in the arts, psychology (心理学),bus in ess, educati on, and scie nce are all work ing to get a deeper un dersta nding of it. Robert J. Stern berg is a creativity specialist and Yale professor of psychology. He defi nes creativity as "the ability to produce work

that is both new (orig in al) and appropriate (applicable to the situatio n)". This definition is useful, as we want our students to use Ianguage in a new way, and to use it correctly and properly. Most scholars say there are two types of creativity: big "C" creativity and small "c" creativity. Big "C" creativity refers to genius level thinking that results in artistic masterpieces and scientific breakthroughs. Small "c" creativity refers to everyday level thinking that can be used in any situation. Our emphasis is on the latter. While it goes without saying that any of our stude nts could go on to be the n ext Picasso or Edis on, our aim is to help stude nts produce more ideas and use Ian guage in new ways.

53. The un derli ned words "wait ing for the bell" in the first paragraph probably mean _______ .

We immediately rushed out to a store, and I bought a nice pink dress with a jacket. The dress was a little tight, but I had a month to go before the June 30 wedding and I would lose a few pounds. June 29 came and, of c ourse, I hadn’t lost a single pound; in fact I had gained two. But I figured a nice new girdle (紧身内衣)would cure everything. So on our way out of the city we stopped once again at the store. I ran in and told the clerk I needed a large-size girdle. The shop assistant found the box with the described girdle marked "LG", and asked if I would like to try it on. “Oh, no, a large will fit just right. I needn’t try it on.” The next morning was rather hot, so I waited to get dressed until about 45 minutes before time to go. I opened the box only to find a new girdle in a small size. I took a trip with my friends to Haleakala National Park, which lies in Hawaii. When we arrived at Haleakala National Park, we were suggested to watch the early morning sunrise. I was lost in the sightseeing that afternoon, so I could hardly wait to meet the sunrise. In the next morning, we all jumped out of the bed very early at 3 o’clock and walked to the rocks by the seaside. In the first half an hour, we imagined how wonderful it would be when the first light came out through the thick clouds and how soft it would be when the light touched our skin, so we waited and waited. However, another half an hour later, I gradually lost my patience since there was nothing but the chilly darkness, and I felt that I was frozen to death. But my friends were still extremely cheerful. Nearly another one hour later, “Amazing!”, a word burst out from Judy and we all shouted to welcome the light orange greatness, which is really unbelievable. Until today, I dare say that it is the most impressive sunrise in my life. However, waiting in the morning darkness is also the one I can not wipe out forever. Waiting sometimes is really a hard thing for most of us as it needs patience and strong-willed determination, but what about the result after that? It might turn out to be pleased, unbelievable and satisfied. So, it is really worthwhile to wait for the best. (268 words) 21. What can we learn from the passage? A. Total. B. Cold. C. Terrible. D. Interesting. 24. What’s the author’s attitude towards waiting for the sunrise? A. Excited all the time.B Afraid all the time. C. Firstly excited then afraid. D. Firstly excited then impatient. B Good luck belongs to the brave –those who have the courage to ride into the mouth of danger for the pearl of happiness. And that’s exactly what this wonderful adventure is all about. Twelve-year-old Ferdinand and his little sister Manuela live with their elder brother Jose and his wife Esmeralda in a little village, in Goa. Work as hard as they might around the house, they are neither appreciated nor given enough to eat. It’s almost al ways a thin rice porridge that they get, while Jose and Esmeralda eat delicious fish curry. Very unhappy living with their brother, the two children want to leave as soon as possible. But Jose does not allow them to leave. He is afraid of what the neighbors might say. Opportunity presents itself in the form of Gomez, who works as a groom(马夫) for a rich woman, Dona Flavia. He takes pity on the hungry children and decides to take them along when delivering some horses to another kingdom .
