第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A

When someone is overweight, most people wonder how they got that way. Linda and her siblings(兄弟姊妹) were born with a normal weight but from the time she was about nine, things started to change. With her sailor father hardly home, her mother turned to running a stall at a canteen for construction workers as a means of income.

Linda says that even as a child, she was forced to work very hard—cleaning floors, washing dishes and cutting up vegetables. There was, however, one big problem—she and her siblings now had access to lots of food from the canteen. Unfortunately, it was mostly unhealthy, rich in coconut cream, sugar or salt. Added to that was fizzy (冒气泡的) drinks, several times a day.

“When we got home, at about 10 or 11pm, my mother would buy us supper and it was usually fried food,”says Linda, sh aking her head at the memory.

This went on for years until Linda’s mum suffered a heart attack at 48 and she had to take over the business. By this time, Linda was clearly overweight but simply did not have the time or energy to do anything about it. Then, a wake-up call came suddenly and tragically. Her elder brother, weighing over 100kg, suffered a massive stroke (中风). He was 41 when he died in 2005.

Linda remembered it vividly.

“I saw him in hospital and it was so painful for me. He was so big, even the nurses couldn’t turn him over. I told myself I would not do that to my family or to myself,” she says, her eyes watering at the memory.

Next to go was her dad, a heavy smoker. He too suffered stroke and was in bed for six months before his death in early 2007.

Like pouring rain, the family’s troubles did not let up.

Despite her bypass operation, her mother—who was at her heaviest, weighed

70kg—did not cut back on rich, unhealthy food. So five years after her heart attack, she was diagnosed with kidney failure.

Three days before Linda’s wedding, and only 10 months after her dad’s passing, her mother gave up fighting and died, aged 63. Linda was horribly upset and fainted repeatedly during the wake, ending up in hospital.

36. The first three paragraphs mainly tell us ________.

A. that Linda and her siblings were born with a normal weight

B. how Linda and her family got overweight

C. that Linda was forced to work very hard as a child

D. that Linda and her family enjoyed food from the canteen

A. Linda’s father didn’t die from overweight

B. Linda’s mother refused to eat junk food after her heart attack

C. we should eat less unhealthy food

D. Linda’s three relatives died in the same year

39. What can we infer from the ending of the passage?

A. Linda would do something to lose weight.

B. Linda still didn’t have time or energy to lose weight.

C. Linda would continue to eat rich, unhealthy food.

D. Linda would remember her three dead relatives forever.

Sheree Washington said their seven-year-old cat, Voodoo, who has always been enjoying heights and life on the balcony(阳台), was lost on Monday after they had finished dinner.

“We searched high and low several times and he was nowhere to be found.”Mrs Washington said. Yesterday morning, she made the journey downstairs in depression, expecting to find his body at the base, 34 floors below her flat. Instead she found Voodoo was just under the bush. Mrs Washington said she was thankful to the bush. Several of the branches were snapped(猛得折断), clearly indicating where Voodoo had landed.

“I grabbed the cat box, put him in and drove him over to the vet(兽医). Normally, if he sees it he hides because he knows we’re taking him somewhere, but he just jumped straight in.” Mrs Washington said.

Miraculously, Voodoo walked away from the incident with a blood-shot eye, a scratched ear, a cut mouth and a damaged paw. The vet told her the record for an animal surviving a fall was a cat in New York who fell 64 storeys. On lower floors they tended to injure themselves, whereas by falling from further up, they had time to right themselves and land on their feet. “The temperature, the heartbeat, everything else was fine,”she said, “Apparently his color was good.”

How do you feel when you live in a dormitory? At a glimpse, you will see things people do in their local life and culture. Instant noodles(方便面), chatting, and computer games make up the tools for surviving dormitory life for most students. They sometimes do sports together, have snacks late at night, or just watch TV in the common room. This is a new living situation for most of the students. They learn to accomplish tasks of new types.

There are many new aspects of dormitory life for students. One main thing of these is personal responsibility required of an individual. There is sudden lack of parental guidance. Of course dormitories have wardens (主管) and residence tutors to oversee the well-being of the residents. However, the absence of parents as authority figures requires students to keep a watchful eye on their own responsibility. This is important for their initial college life. There are various tasks: keeping the room clean, cooking meals, doing their own laundry. These new situations will have great effect on students’ personal responsibility and are necessary to their academic and social accomplishment.

There is another important thing in dormitory life: relationship. Students need to form good relationship. The first relationship is formed between roommates. Living with a roommate and adjusting to different living habits may cause tension. Many students prefer complete privacy in their home. So, it is a good idea to discuss several

things early on with roommates and arrive at an agreeable arrangement. Like siblings in their own home before, roommates live in continuous contact with them. The condition obliges them to live with other persons, no matter what the situation is.

Of course, in a dormitory there are problems. Students must solve these problems in a reasonable way. A college student may adapt to all new challenges and freedoms of dorm life. By learning, they will accept dormitory life as unique environment. Preparing themselves those ways will enable them to face new things in their life.

44. The first paragraph mainly talks about ________.

A. what a dormitory life is like in general

B. the importance of a harmonious dormitory life

C. how to handle new things in a dormitory

D. practical advice to make dorm life meaningful

45. It can be inferred from the second paragraph that ________.

A. responsible roommates are always popular with others

B. parents have positive effects on students’ behaviors

C. complete independence from parents is hard to achieve

D. doing dorm duties benefits academic accomplishment

46. According to the text, life in a dormitory ________.

A. is a difficult but necessary part of college life

B. plays an important role in one’s character training

C. is more or less based on the concept of family

D. might be disturbed when there is a new situation

47. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?

A. Life in a Dormitory

B. Responsibility & Relationship

C. The ABCs of College Students

D. How to Start a College Life

D

Through different advertising techniques, companies achieve a growth in the sales of their products and services by attracting the masses. Print advertising makes use of the print media such as magazines and newspapers. The print media also offers options like advertising through brochures or pamphlets. Fliers(传单) and brochures are commonly distributed with newspapers and supplements are attached to newspapers. In such cases, the popularity of the newspaper and the location of the advertisement in it matter most.

The use of audio-visual media is another popular advertising technique. Television and radio have been used in advertising for long. In case of radio and television the broadcasting time decides the cost of the advertisement. Internet advertising that has emerged in the relatively recent times has earned a huge recognition. Advertisements relate to the subject discussed by the website and popularity of the website and the position of the advertisement on the web page are determinants of its noticeability.

Advertisers also use movies to feature their advertisements. Covert advertising is the practice of indirectly publicizing a product through movies and TV shows. For

example, the actress in the film or the TV show may be shown to be using a particular brand of clothes or cosmetics; a particular restaurant or company may be shot so that the company name appears in the scene. The audiences watching the show or the movie are sure to notice the name advertised.

The use of famous people for the promotion of a brand is one advertising technique while making use of common people is another. Celebrities are widely admired and hence prove highly effective on advertising, while the use of plain folks strategy in advertising is based on the idea that common people can easily reach out to the masses.

48. Covert advertisements refer to ________.

A. advertisements published in brochures or pamphlets

B. indirect advertisements through movies and TV shows

C. advertisements of a certain brand of clothes or cosmetics

D. the promotion of a brand using famous people

49. Some advertisers use common people instead of pop stars because ________.

A. common people are more believable and reachable to the masses

B. pop stars usually ask for a lot more payments from the advertisers

C. common people are usually admired and trusted by advertisers

D. pop stars never have lasting popularity among the masses

50. The text is mainly about ________.

A. the function of advertising

B. the benefits of advertising

C. the history of advertising

D. the techniques of advertising

Teens, Television and Depression

A new study suggests that the more teenagers watch television, the more likely they are to develop depression(抑郁) as young adults. But whether TV may or may not be to blame is a question that the study leaves unanswered.

51 They based their findings on more than four thousand adolescents who were not depressed when the survey began in 1995.

As part of the survey, the young people were asked how many hours of television or videos they watched daily. They were also asked how often they played computer games and listened to the radio. 52 More than two hours of that was spent watching TV.

Seven years later, in 2002, more than seven percent of the young people had signs of depression. 53

Brian Primack at the University of Pittsburgh medical school was the lead author of the new study. He says every extra hour of television meant an eight percent increase in the chances of developing signs of depression.

54 But the study did find that young men were more likely than young women to develop depression given the same amount of media use.

55 But one possibility, he says, is that it may take time away from activities that could help prevent depression, like sports and socializing. It might also interfere (妨碍) with sleep, he says, and that could have an influence.

A. If you feel down, or your mood isn’t the right color, then turn off the TV!

B. The average age at that time was twenty-one.

C. The researchers say they did not find any such relationship with the use of

other media such as movies, video games or radio.

D. So, don’t watch as much TV, and take a walk or play basketball, or even read a

book and sip some lemonade!

E. The researchers used a national long-term survey of adolescent health to

investigate(调查) the relationship between media use and depression.

F. Doctor Primack says the study did not explore if watching TV causes

depression.

G. Media use totaled an average of five and one-half hours a day.
