May I begin by thanking Sir Howard for this honour of speaking at the London School of Economics and Political Science.其实，我与LSE还很有缘分。
这是我第二次访问LSE。
上一次是我刚上任不久来LSE出席―汉语桥‖英国赛区的预赛。
那是我来英国后的第一场公共活动，也是第一次演讲。
由于预赛在LSE举行，又逢虎年，英国选手个个虎虎生威，一路过关斩将，最后伦敦大学亚非学院的蒋思哲（Stewart Johnson）获特等奖，开了英国选手在世界大学生―汉语桥‖中文比赛总决赛中夺冠之先河。
他们应感谢LSE给他们带来的好运。
(In fact, this is my second visit to the LSE. I made my first public appearance and first speech as the Chinese ambassador to the UK at the LSE. That was when I attended the Ninth Chinese Proficiency Competition here. As the competition was held at LSE, and it was shortly after the start of the year of Tiger, every British contestants put on a vigorous and outstanding performance. I’m glad that Stewart Johnson, an undergraduate student at SOAS won the competition in the UK, and went on to win the top prize in Beijing, becoming the first ever British student to win this prize. It is my great pleasure and privilege to visit Cambridge at the invitation of the Vice Chancellor and to speak at the Judge Business School.这是我出使英国后第一次来到剑桥，但我对剑桥丝毫没有陌生感。
This is my first visit to Cambridge as Chinese Ambassador to the UK. Yet Cambridge is no stranger to me.虽然我到英国后先去了牛津，但我知道“牛津出首相、剑桥出诺贝尔奖”这句佳话，知道剑桥大学校友获得了88个诺贝尔奖，相当于英国所获诺奖的总和，在世界所有大学中保持最高纪录。
I heard a saying: "If you want to meet prime ministers, go to Oxford; but for Nobel Prize winners, go to Cambridge". Cambridge alumni won 88 Nobel Prizes, as many as the prizes won by Britain as a country, ranking first in all the universities around the world.我最早相识剑桥，是因为徐志摩先生在这里留下了《再别康桥》这样的千古绝唱，也是因为李约瑟博士在这里写就了鸿篇巨著《中国科学技术史》。

孙大立总领事在兰卡斯特孔子学院教学座谈会上的讲话尊敬的王盈参赞及夫人,尊敬的刘院长,各位孔子学院院长,各位老师,各位同学们:大家下午好！今天让我致辞，我没有什么准备，不知道该讲什么，就随便跟大家说两句。
今天能够来到兰卡斯特大学，并不陌生，因为之前来过两次，这里摆的那张照片就是上次跟兰卡斯特大学校长的合影，不过看上去有一点皱巴巴的（笑声），不过也说明那次也是满怀诚意风尘仆仆赶来参加盛会的。
《滕王阁序》里面有句话，叫做“十旬休假，胜友如云；千里逢迎，高朋满座”，今天老朋友和新朋友坐了一屋子。
虽然刘院长说这里目前的样子比装修预期效果要略为寒酸一点，但是我想这就是孔子当年办学堂的样子。
孔子嘛，百年千年万年，昨天今天明天，多少亭台楼阁，早就化作了一片瓦砾。
而孔子和孔子学说，从公元前250年到现在，传承了已经两千多年，多少通都大邑还在汲取他的智慧，多少穷乡僻壤还在温习他的学说。
孔子之所以能流芳百世，而且现在飘洋过海变成这么多国家汲取它的经验和学问的伟大教育家，就是因为他的学说，他的人格魅力，他所倡导的“仁义礼智信，温良恭俭让”是我们全人类的智慧财富，我们想成功、想达到一个更高的境界，永远都可以从他的学说中汲取精华和力量。
在曼彻斯特领区内共有9所孔子学院和很多的孔子课堂，其中兰卡斯特孔子学院是佼佼者，办得比较好。
在教师节期间，我代表曼城总领馆来到兰卡斯特孔子学院，来看望大家，向大家表示慰问和祝贺，关心和关怀，同时也要向各位致以崇高诚挚的敬意。
（掌声）中国老师在兰卡斯特建立的孔子学院是非常优秀的。
我们感谢兰卡斯特大学，感谢兰卡斯特各方面对孔子学院的支持。
老师是非常受人尊敬的，因为老师学为人师，行为人范。
老师这个职业在中国好有一比，叫作“春蚕到死丝方尽，蜡炬成灰泪始干”。
老师是我们每个人成长过程中的启蒙者，我们说，教室放飞的是他人，守巢的是老师；黑板写上的是知识，擦下的是功利；粉笔画上的是彩虹，洒下的是泪滴；讲台举起的是学生，奉献的是老师；所以我们要对兰卡斯特大学老师们，孔子学院老师们，对王盈老师等表示敬意。

诺丁汉大学迎来中国驻英国大使刘晓明的演讲稿，很荣幸今天能够与大家见面，就是在这个非同寻常的时刻。
前几天我从微信上得知大使先生将来到诺丁汉大学做演讲，我感到万分振奋。
所幸今天我能够亲临现场，更加感受到刘大使在推进中英友好交流方面所付出的努力。
中国和英国有着悠久的文化交流历史，而中国驻英国大使馆作为中英两国之间的桥梁，一直致力于加强两国之间的关系。
特别是刘大使就任以来，一直在推动中英合作与交流，推动了两国之间前所未有的交流与合作。
在今天的演讲中，刘大使一定会就中英两国关系及未来合作提出中肯的指引。
不同国家之间的合作，需要的不仅是政府层面的协调，更需要的是各个领域之间的合作与交流。
考虑到当下中英两国具备的优势领域，我们可以重点考虑以下几个方面：首先是教育领域。
中国和英国在教育方面的合作历史悠久。
如今的英国拥有许多世界著名大学，而中国的高校正在日益壮大。
双方之间的教育交流有助于推动两国教育事业的发展。
其次是文化领域。
中国和英国不仅有着悠久的历史文化底蕴，也有着独特的现代文化魅力。
两国之间的文化交流可以激发出许多新的火花，促进两国文化艺术形式的互补和交融，共同推动世界文化的发展。
最后是经贸领域。
中英商贸往来和技术交流一直是双边合作的重要组成部分。
近年来，中国的经济不断增长，与此同时，英国也在积极开展国际贸易。
两国的经济将会更加互补，形成共赢的局面。
诺丁汉大学是英国著名的高等院校，拥有着很高的学术声誉。
在各个领域的人才培养方面均有显著成就。
今天可以邀请到刘大使来到学校做演讲，正好可以推动学校和中国的合作交流，促进中英两国在教育领域的更深入的合作。
在此，我代表诺丁汉大学对刘大使的到来表示热烈欢迎，并期望今后我们能够在各个方面继续拓展中英之间的合作与交流，共同推动中英两国在全球范围内的更加广泛合作与发展。

中共中央政治局常委李长春、国务委员刘延东不久前成功访英，在座的不少企业家参加了相关活动。
两国启动了高级别人文交流机制，英方在华举办的“艺述英国”活动已经拉开序幕。
我们也正在准备今年下半年两国的一系列对话和访问，推动两国在贸易、投资、金融和人文领域的一系列合作和交流，并期待伦敦奥运会成为两国关系的新亮点。
然而，就是在这样令人鼓舞的形势下，总有一些势力不愿看到中英关系发展，总有一些人不珍惜中英关系来之不易的成果，不珍惜两国关系面临的难得机遇。
结果，中英关系就出现了我们不愿看到的情况。
回顾中英关系过去40年走过的历程，我们看到两国关系并不总是阳光灿烂，也有乌云密布；并非总是一帆风顺，也有坎坷起伏。
如果说两个月前，我在中国驻英使馆举办的招待会上对中英关系过去的40年更多是讲成就，今天我想更多讲如何总结经验，吸取教训，避免中英关系大起大落。
十九世纪英国著名首相帕默斯顿有句名言：“国家之间没有永恒的朋友或盟友，只有永恒的利益”。
可见英国的外交十分重视利益，可以说利益至上。
无疑，利益是左右国家关系发展的一大决定性因素。
那么，在中英关系中什么是利益？如何处理好这些利益？我认为有以下三点至关重要：第一，促进共同利益。

驻英国大使刘晓明在英国伊顿公学的演讲 伊顿和牛津，同样具有数百年历史，同样坐落在泰晤士河畔，同样是《哈利·波特》的拍摄地，同样是英才辈出，我不知道英语中是否有这么一个词：Oxtonian,用来指先后就读于伊顿和牛津的学子。
因为，“伊顿+牛津”，这是一个最富英国特色的黄金教育组合，培养了许多杰出人才。
一个最为人津津乐道的例子是，伊顿和牛津共同造就了13位英国首相，包括现任首相，名副其实地成为英国政治家的摇篮（"the chief nurse of England's statesmen"）。
还有一个不为人知的例子是，詹姆斯·邦德（007）据说也是伊顿和牛津校友，不过听说他因为惹了麻烦，伊顿开除了他。
Eton and Oxford have a lot in common: · They both have a history of hundreds of years. · They are both located by river Thames. · They were both chosen to be the settings for the film Harry Potter. · And they have both produced a wealth of talents. I wonder whether you have a word ‘Oxtonian’ for those attending both Eton and Oxford! Eton plus Oxford is an optimal combination of education. This combination is distinctively British. Together they have cultivated a galaxy of great people. Thirteen Prime Ministers have come from Eton and Oxford, including the incumbent one. As a traditional description explains, Eton is truly the “the chief nurse of England’s statesmen.”James Bond is in the news again with his latest movie called ‘Skyfall’. You may be interested to know his films are very popular in China! A less known story is James Bond also went to Eton and Oxford. I gather that the story goes that he was expelled by Eton for his talent in trouble making! 今天在座的不少是伊顿公学“前沿社”的成员。

I am delighted to be on my first visit to the City of Nottingham and your picturesque university, which lives up to its reputation as one of the most beautiful campuses in the UK.最近英国和中国正同时热映一部电影——《罗宾汉》，据说，这位劫富济贫的绿林好汉当年就活跃在诺丁汉郊外的舍伍德森林里。

The recent film Robin Hood has been a big hit with audiences both in China and here in the UK. The story as I am sure youknow, is about a man who robbed from the rich to give to the poor, while living in Sherwood Forest on the outskirts of Nottingham. But it has been as much about the stunning natural beauty and rich British culture depicted in the film, which has fascinated a lot of Chinese viewers. I believe this is great news for you, as Nottingham should expect to receive more visitors from China, and University of Nottingham will be home to more Chinese Students.创建于1881年的诺丁汉大学，是英国排名前十的高等学府。

These are the All Party Parliamentary China Group and London South Bank University. It is your support that has brought the conference to such a distinguished and unique location, the British Parliament.My thanks also go to Han Ban for leading the effort for Mandarin promotion in Britain.This UK Confucius Institute National Conference embodies the important task of building deep, lasting and long term Sino-UK understanding.Creating that kind of understanding will be won in schools and universities. In my 18 months in the UK, I have attended many cultural activities. Among them, events related to Mandarin promotion, Confucius Institutes and Confucius Classrooms have always been a priority for me. Whenever my schedule allows, I will always turn up and take part!我出任中国驻英国大使已是一年半有余，出席过中英之间举办的各种文化活动，其中事关汉语推广、孔子学院和孔子课堂的活动，我不仅是优先参加，而且有请必到。
In fact, the first event I attended as Chinese Ambassador to the UK was the UK preliminaryfor the ‘Ninth Chinese Bridge Competition.’ As you may know, this is a highly successful global contest organised by Han Ban.Then last September, I spoke at the Second Joint Conference of European Confucius Institutes.Shortly afterwards, I unveiled the Confucius C lassroom at the St Mary’s Primary School.When Vice Premier Li Keqiang was here on an official visit this past January, I was with him at an exchange with British students learning Mandarin.Two months later, I joined His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales at the official unveiling of the Confucius Classroom at Llandovery College in Wales.The same month, I attended the UK Regional Final for the ‘Tenth Chinese Bridge Competition.’In two days time I will be giving a reception at our Embassy for the UK contestants in the ‘Chinese Bridge Competitions’. They will be joined by their teachers and families.That will be another occasion for us to celebrate the outstanding performances of these young British contestants. It is a proud symbol of the success in Mandarin teaching in this country.去年3月我刚到任时，参加的第一场公众活动是第九届世界大学生“汉语桥”比赛英国区预选赛；接着，参加了欧洲孔子学院联席会；不久又为伦敦圣玛丽小学孔子课堂揭牌；今年1月，我陪同到访的李克强副总理会见了英国汉语学习爱好者；3月，我同查尔斯王子一同出席了威尔士兰德福瑞公学孔子课堂的揭牌仪式；当月，我又出席了第十届世界大学生“汉语桥”比赛英国区预选赛。

You may now be asking: Why is the Chinese Ambassador devoting so much time on Mandarin promotion in the UK?There are three reasons. Let me take each in turn.为什么我这么重视在英国的汉语推广？我想，原因有三：First, Mandarin is at the very core of Chinese culture and civilization. It is one of the most popular cultural products of China.So if China is to be truly understood and integrated with the world, we must promote the learning of Mandarin.One question put to me by many visiting Chinese delegations is this: “What does Britain sell most to the rest of the world?”I respond: “That must be English”!Let me give you some compelling statistics. Today, roughly 1 billion people are learning English worldwide. An additional 1.5 to 2 billion are speaking or exposed to English every day.In contrast, Mandarin is spoken by over 1 billion users. This means Mandarin has more native speakers than any other language.More importantly, Mandarin is part of the very ‘DNA’ of Chinese civilisation, the core building block of Chinese culture. China is the longest continuous civilisation in the world. Mandarin has been an integral part of the development of China for the past five millennia.Coming back to the language statistics, Mandarin now has more than 40 million learners across the globe. This is a key trend for the people of the world outside China to truly grasp the depth and breadth of Chinese culture and civilization.One powerful example of Mandarin’s growing popularity is the Confucius Institutes initiative.Confucius Institutes started from scratch six years ago.
