6月大学生英语六级考试阅读题预测二2015年6月大学生英语六级考试阅读题预测(二)Questions 61 to 65 are based on the following passage. We all know that the normal human daily cycle of activity is of some 7-8 hours sleep alternating with some16-17 hours wakefulness and that, broadly speaking, the sleep normally coincides with the hours of darkness. Our present concern is with how easily and to what extent this cycle can be modified. The question is no mere academic one. The ease, for example, with which people can change from working in the day to working at night is a question of growing importance in industry where automation calls for round-the- clock working of machines. It normally takes from five days to one week for a person to adapt to a reversed routine of sleep and wakefulness, sleeping during the day and working at night. Unfortunately, it is often the case in industry that shifts are changed every week; a person may work from 12 midnight to 8 a.m. one week, 8 a.m to 4 p.m the next, and 4 p.m. to 12 midnight the third and so on. This means that no sooner has he got used to one routine than he has to change to another, so that much of his time is spent neither working nor sleeping very efficiently. One answer would seem to be longer periods on each shift, a month, or even three months. Recent research by Bonjer of the Netherlands, however, has shown that people on such systems will revert to their normal habits of sleep and wakefulness during the weekend and that this is quite enough to destroy any adaptation to night workbuilt up during the week. The only real solution appears to be to hand over the nightshift to a number of permanent night workers. An interesting study of the domestic life and health of night-shift workers was carded out by Brown in 1957. She found a high incidence of disturbed sleep and other disorders among those on alternating day and night shifts, but no abnormal occurrence of these phenomena among those on permanent night work. This latter system then appears to be the best long-term policy, but meanwhile something may be done to relieve the strains of alternate day and night work by selecting those people who can adapt most quickly to the changes of routine. One way of knowing when a person has adapted is by measuring his body temperature. People engaged in normal day-time work will have a high temperature during the hours of wakefulness and a low one at night; when they change to night work the pattern will only gradually go back to match the new routine and the speed with which it does so parallels, broadly speaking, the adaptation of the body as a whole, particularly in terms of performance. Therefore, by taking body temperature at intervals of two hours throughout the period of wakefulness it can be seen how quickly a person can adapt to a reversed routine, and this could be used as a basis for selection. So far, however, such a form of selection does not seem to have been applied in practice.61. The study of sleep cycle can be of practical use to places where __________.A. strict work shifts are required to cater for the need of automatic machinesB. working at night is normal for most employeesC. employees work according to different requirements of machinesD. employees have to adapt to irregular work patterns andorganizations62. According to Bonier, after the training of a different sleep pattern during the weekdays, people __________.A. resume their original sleep habits for night shifts before the trainingB. tend to come back to their routine sleep patterns at weekendsC. suffer a lot when they come back home to sleep at weekendsD. enjoy the benefits of adjusting to various sleep patterns quickly63. Which of the following is Brown's finding?A. People should choose a sleep pattern and work according to the pattern.B. Regular changes between day shifts and the night ones do good to workers.C. Permanent night workers suffer no disturbed sleep or other disorders.D. Workers act abnormally when they work on night shift every day.64. What can be done in arranging day and night shifts in a factory?A. Make a survey on employees' preference on different shifts.B. Give a physical test and find those who are always energetic at nights.C. Stick to the pattern for three months once the shifts are settled down.D. Look for those who can adjust fast to the change of wakefulness and sleep.65. According to the passage, body temperature__________.A. plays a vital role in selecting people for alternative day and night shiftsB. changes every two hours during the day and every three hours during the nightC. has been used for industries in selecting people for alternative shiftsD. changes after a person has finished the training for alternative shifts。

In an era characterized by rapid technological advancements and the ubiquity of digitalization, the debate over the potential impact of technology on humaninteraction has ignited numerous discussions. While some argue that technology fosters efficient communication and expands our social circles, others contend that it isolates individuals and erodes human connection. In this essay, we will delve into the intricate relationship between technology and human interaction, examining both its advantages and drawbacks, and ultimately arriving at a nuanced understanding of its influence on our social fabric. On the one hand, technology has undoubtedly revolutionized the way we communicate. Social media platforms, instant messaging applications, and video conferencing tools have bridged geographical barriers, enabling us to stay connected with friends and familyregardless of distance. The ease and immediacy of digital communication have fostered a sense of global interconnectedness, allowing us to engage in real-time conversations, share our thoughts and experiences, and maintain relationships across continents. Technology has also facilitated the formation of online communities and virtual social groups, where individuals with shared interests or backgrounds can connect and engage in meaningful discussions. Moreover, technology has expanded our social circles beyond our immediate physical surroundings. Through online platforms, we can interact with individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and perspectives, enriching our social experiences and broadening our horizons. Social networking sites, in particular, have empowered us to connect with experts, thought leaders, and individuals we would otherwise not have the opportunity to encounter. By exposing us to different viewpoints and challenging our preconceptions, technology can foster greater tolerance, empathy, and understanding within society. On the other hand, there are also concerns that technology may have detrimental effects on human interaction. Critics argue that excessive reliance on digital communication can lead to isolation and loneliness. The replacement of face-to-face interactions with virtual ones may result in a loss of nonverbal cues, body language, and the nuances of human expression. This can hinder our ability to build deep and meaningful relationships, as non-verbal communication plays a crucial role in conveying emotions, establishing rapport, and fostering intimacy.Furthermore, some studies suggest that heavy social media use may contribute to feelings of inadequacy and anxiety. The constant stream of curated and idealized content on social media platforms can lead to comparisons, envy, and a sense of not measuring up to others. This can negatively impact our self-esteem and social well-being, potentially undermining our ability to interact with others authentically and confidently.Additionally, the rise of technology has raised concerns about privacy and surveillance. The collection andanalysis of our online data, including our browsing history, social media activity, and location, can raise questions about our freedom, autonomy, and the erosion of our private spaces. This can create a sense of unease and distrust, making us less inclined to engage in open and honest communication online.

Many criminals continue to commit crimes even after being punished for it. Why do you think this happen? How can we solve this problem? IntroductionA mushrooming number of criminals, after being released from the jail, will revert to crime, exerting ceaseless baneful influence on the social harmony and stability. Behind such a ticklish problem, from my perspective, are two predominant factors and viable solutions are in desperate need to avert the bleak future. Body 1The chief culprit for re-offending would be the difficulty for the criminals to settle down and reintegrate into the society. Indisputably, one of the root causesfor anti-social behaviors is poverty, by which I mean living odds force some people to embark on a path of delinquency to support themselves by engaging in illegal activities such as stealing, larceny and the like. After being freed from the prison, with a criminal record, never would it be easy for the law-breakers who lack livelihood skills to secure a job and become economically independent. Another contributing factor for such a worrying trend has much to do with the psychology condition of the criminals. Suffering from improper treatment, be it physical punishment or verbal aggression, many offenders, when set free from the prison, are inundated with resentment instead of visions of life, for which they, running after revenge, are apt to fall back into perpetrating crimes. 语言攻击;embark on a path of delinquency v. 盗窃;be inundated with v. 复仇;are apt to v. Body 2Prickly as the issue is, steps can be taken to address this . Primarily, the government should play a leading role by enacting tougher laws and carrying out more severe penalties such as heavier fines or longer sentences for offenders toaccomplish the purpose of deterrence. The authorities should also polish the effectiveness of imprisonment with the aim to help criminals achieve rehabilitation. To specify, job-related training targeted at those released offenders are staunchly suggested, which enables them to be furnished with some employment abilities, be they a plumber, a hairdresser or a driver. In this case, they can be, in large part, encouraged to live a normal life rather than violate the law for survival. Efforts from family members, friends and the society are also indispensable to cure the mental disorders. To elaborate, showing enough respect and helping those ex-prisoners to find a job are great tender solicitude. The general public and the whole society should be made to believe are formed man deserves a new leaf. 强烈地;be furnished with v. ConclusionIn conclusion, the problem for ex-prisoners to resort to offence, notwithstanding its gravity, can be brought under control with both the government and the public shouldering joint responsibility. 2There are a variety of punishments for criminals, including imprisonment, fines, and community service. However, even after serving their sentences, a significant proportion of ex-prisoners continue to commit crimes. This essay will explore the reasons behind this and propose solutions.

The Allure of Simplicity in a Complex World In a world characterized by relentless technological advancement and an ever-increasing pace of life, the allure of simplicity has become increasingly powerful. The relentless pursuit of progress, often fueled by consumerism and the pressure to keep up with societal expectations, has led many individuals to feel overwhelmed and disconnected from what truly matters. This essay will explore the various facets of simplicity, examining its benefits, challenges, and its crucial role in fostering a more balanced and fulfilling life. Simplicity, at its core, is about stripping away the unnecessary, decluttering both our physical spaces and our mental landscapes. It's about prioritizing experiences over material possessions, fostering meaningful connections over fleeting distractions. In a society saturated with information, simplifying our consumption habits allows us to focus on quality over quantity, savoring the essential and discarding the superfluous. This conscious effort to streamline our lives extends to our relationships, encouraging deeper bonds built on authenticity and shared values, rather than superficialinteractions driven by social pressures. The benefits of embracing simplicity are manifold. Firstly, it reduces stress and anxiety. By minimizing unnecessary commitments and obligations, we free up time and energy to dedicate to activities that truly nourish our souls. This renewed focus fosters a sense of calm and clarity, allowing us to engage more fully with the present moment and appreciate the beauty of everyday life. Secondly, simplicity promotes creativity and innovation. Unburdened by the weight of excessive possessions and obligations, our minds become more receptive to new ideas and perspectives. This freedom allows us to explore untrodden paths and embrace unconventional solutions, leading to personal growth and a heightened sense of purpose. However, the path towards simplicity is not without its challenges. In a world obsessed with material wealth and social validation, choosing a simpler lifestyle can be perceived as unconventional or even counter-cultural. The constant bombardment of advertisements and the pervasive influence of social media fuel a sense of inadequacy and pressure to conform to societal expectations. Overcoming these external pressures requires a conscious effort to cultivate inner contentment andredefine personal values, prioritizing genuine happiness over fleeting trends. Another challenge lies in determining what constitutes "simplicity" for each individual. What one person finds liberating, another might perceive asrestrictive. The essence of simplicity lies in tailoring it to our unique needsand aspirations, finding a balance that fosters personal fulfillment without sacrificing our core values. This journey requires introspection and self-awareness, identifying the elements in our lives that genuinely contribute to our well-being and discarding those that hinder our growth. Despite these challenges, the pursuit of simplicity is a worthy endeavor. By choosing to focus on what truly matters, we create space for greater meaning and purpose in our lives. This shiftin perspective allows us to cultivate gratitude for the simple joys, fostering a sense of contentment and inner peace that transcends the allure of material possessions and fleeting trends. Ultimately, embracing simplicity empowers us to live authentically, prioritizing experiences, connections, and personal growthover the relentless pursuit of more. In conclusion, the allure of simplicity lies in its power to liberate us from the complexities of modern life. By consciously choosing to simplify our surroundings, consumption habits, and social interactions, we create space for greater meaning, purpose, and fulfillment. This journey requires introspection, courage, and a willingness to challenge societal norms, but the rewards are immeasurable. In a world saturated with distractions and fleeting desires, simplicity offers a path towards a more balanced, authentic, and ultimately fulfilling life.。

Doctors encourage older people to take regular exercise, but few of them take enough physical exercise. What are the causes and what can be done to encourage them to take exercise? IntroductionTaking regular exercise, as is universally acknowledged, plays midwife to helping old people keep physical fitness, while most of them, in spite of strong recommendation from doctors, still fail to take ample exercises. Behind such a ticklish problem, from my own perspective, are three predominant factors and viable solutions are in desperate need to avert the bleak future. Body 1Primarily, much as many elders are pleased to enjoy their twilight years, it does not look feasible since most youngsters, bread winners in families, are swamped with work under this cut-throat competition, under which circumstance, their parents will voluntarily help them with chores and minister to their grandchildren. Consequently, hardly do they have sufficient time to take sports. Another major contributing factor would have much to do with the transformed lifestyles of the elderly. Unlike the past when people have limited forms of entertainment, the current digital era is saturated with intriguing activities, ranging from surfing the internet to shooting off to see amusing videos, which tightly grip the old's attention. Benefited from its online convenience and diversity, the old will be indisposed to step out for exercises. Undeniable is also the fact that the lack of tailored creational amenities in the vicinity of residence will dampen the old's zeal for taking sports. To illustrate, with a swimming pool being kilometers away, swimming would only be a wild wish. 可行的,办得到的;be swamped with v. 照顾;援助;be saturated with v. 使感兴趣,吸引住(某人)的注意;be indisposed to v. Body 2In order to address the prickly problem of inadequate physical exercise among elderly, the government should play a leading role by earmarking funds to proffering more age-appropriate sports facilities with either installing handrails or perfecting walking path, which are expected to give the old easier access to recreational areas, opening up more opportunities for them to join in activities like jogging and hiking. Apart from fiscal policy from the government, disseminating information through public service advertising, community centers and senior organizations is also of tangible boons in boosting the awareness concerning the significance of physical health. Besides, young adults, instead of being boomerang children, are supposed to shoulder more family responsibility for the care of older people is firmly within the domain of the family. ConclusionIn conclusion, barriers for the lack of sufficient exercise among the older individuals are various and the thorny issue should not be downplayed. By tailoring exercise facilities and elevating their awareness, older generations will be more likely to engage in regular physical activities.
