M: Oh, nothing.

W:You can’t fool me.I know something’s boring you. I’ve never seen you looking so down before.

Text2

W: Is this seat taken?

M: I don’t think so. The lady who was here finished her lunch and left.

Text3

W: Thank you very much for the meal .

M: Not at all. I’m glad you could come.

W: You must come and have a meal with me some time.

M: Yes. That would be nice.

Text4

W: While traveling, which do you prefer to take, train, ship or plane ?

M: It depends. Different people have different reasons for their choice.

Text5

W: Did you turn off the lights when you left the conference room ?

W: I had Miss Wu turn them off.

Text6

W: Would it be possible to travel to other planets in future?

M: Yes, I think so. Remember we were talking about the international space station.

W: Yes. What does that have to do with space travel ?

M: When the international space station becomes a center for all kinds of space activities, it would be easier to do many things, including space travel.

W: It sounds really fascinating!

M: Yeah. When human beings have a well established lunar base, it would become the stepping-stone for travel to other planets.

W: Which planet would it be likely for us to travel to ?

M: Mars, I think.

Text7

W: Hello, Mr. Brown. How are you ?

M: Fine, thanks, Mrs. Downs. How is your boy, Paul ?

W: He is a bit tired. You know, he goes to school at 7:30 every morning. He doesn’t get home until 4:30. Then he does his homework after tea. It often takes him a couple of hours to finish it.

M: Poor boy. They work hard at school nowadays, don’t they?Does he like it?

W: You mean the school ? Yes, he does. He likes his teachers and classmates.

M: Does he go to school by bus ?

W: No, he walks. He likes walking. He meets some of his friends at the corner and they go together.

M: What does he do when it rains ?

W: My husband takes him in the car. He passes the school on the way to the office.

Text8

M: Hey, Christine, I can’t wait to start working with you on Monday. Can you tell me about your co-workers ?

W: Well, you know Lisa. She works really hard. I think she even comes to the office on the weekend. But, then there’s Zach…

M: Oh, yeah. What’s he like ?

W: The total opposite. Every time I see him, he’s either taking a break, or talking on the phone. I don’t know how he gets any work done.

M: What about your boss ?

W: Angela ?

M: Yeah. What’s she like?

W: She’s so relaxed. She never gets angry or upset. I really enjoy working for her.

M: That’s good.

W: Well, it sounds like things are going well for you in Singapore.I’ll bet you’re not missing the cold weather.

M: No, but you know it’s warm . I can’t say that I like having no change of seasons. I missed fall and seeing all the colors change on the trees.

W: I guess that it would be strange, wouldn’t it … So are you thinking of coming home any time soon for a visit ?

M: Well, I was thinking of coming homes for Christmas, but Mom and Dad are coming here to visit me in January, so I’ll probably hold off for a bit. I think I’ll wait until summer. It gets incrediably hot here around July and I think that would be the best time to come home.

W: Tha’s a long time away.

M: I know, but I’m planning to stay for three weeks when I come back. Who knows, I may end up coming sooner.

W: Well, it’ll be great to see you when you do come. We all miss having you around.

M: I miss you guys too. Anyway, I should get going. I’ve got to be at work in half an hour. I’ll talk to you soon, okay.

W: Yeah. I’ll give you a call in two weeks or so. Take care.

M: Bye, Jane.

Many Japanese never take the vacations they should enjoy, but with the coming of the “Golden

Week” , a series of holidays following one after another in late April and early May, they pour out of

the country by tens of thousands. The most popular place they go to is Hawaii, but Hong kong , Singapore and South Korea are also favored. The typical Japanese traveling abroad, as it is reported,

travels for about a week and takes, on average, 2008U.s. dollars to spend on airlines tickets, hotels

and gifts for friends and relatives. It may seem high, but it’s cheap for the Japanese, who would have

to spend a lot more if they spent a week touring in their own country.

M: Well, she never comes when I call her, she spills her food, and she sheds all over the place. I can’t wait till Debbie gets back.

Text6

M: Hello, Betty. What are you doing ?

W: I am reading the novel Red and Black.

M: Yeah. The National Holiday is coming. I want to know what you are going to do.

W: My husband told me last night that he would be working overtime during the holiday, so I had to cancel the plans of going to the beach with him.

M: Don’t be sad. Paul called me a few days ago. He invited you and me to climb the mountains with our college classmates. How about you ?

W: Great idea! I haven’t seen them since we graduated.

Text7

W: What are you going to do in Canada ?

M: I’m going to do some research.

W: how long will it take ?

M: Three months, probably. It’ll depend on how everything will be going.

W: It’s cold there. You may need some heavy clothes. Oh, this suitcase is probably too small. M: Don’t worry. I expect to do most of our work in the lab. But I do need a large suitcase. I’ll take a lot of research materials with me.

W: So why don’t we go to the shop to get a large suitcase?

M:Ok. Let’s go.

Text8

W: Where shall we take the children this weekend?

M: Well, we could take them to Newport Waterworld or to Oldfield Adventure park. Thay love that sort of thing. Which one would you prefer?

W: Well, how far away are they? I don’t want to spend all day in the car.

M: Well, Newport is pretty close—about one hour away. But Oldfield will take about two and a half hours—if we’re lucky.

W: Do they have swimming pools?

M: Well, Waterworld has a huge pool for swimming and playing about. The Adventure Park hasn’t got a pool, but it’s got a small zoo.

W: I really don’t like zoos. I hate seeing animals in cages.

M: Well, there aren’t any animals at Waterworld.

W: Well, if we are going, I’m going to take a picnic. I know they’ve got restaurants but they are always so expensive. I’d rather take our own food and drinks.

M: That’s a good idea. I’ll tell the children.

Text9

M: Thank you for contacting me, Mrs. Seymour. My wife and I have been a little concerned about Sandra as well. She’s always been such a good student, so I must admit; I was shocked to see how bad her marks have been lately.

W: Yes, Sandra has excelled until now, so it was a surprise to see her grades take such a rapid fall. I had a chat with her yesterday though, and it seems to me she is very tired. She’s captain of the school basketball team, and I believe she is also learning the clarinet and piano after school?

M: That’s right. My wife is a pianist and has great hopes for Sandra.

W: But she also learns ballet and swimming as well, doesn’t she ?

M: Tha’s right. We want her to be as active as possible. She told me she’s just started a part-time job delivering newspapers. We think it’s important for her to learn responsibility from a young age.

W: Well, it seems to me that with all these extra-curricular activities that Sandra is spreading herself too thin. It may be a good idea to cut back on something and give her time to study. Text10

The train I was traveling on was already half an hour late. I had planned to arrive in Chicago at

7:00 in time to catch the 7:50 train to St.Louis, but there was no hope of that now. I explained the situation to the conductor who advised me to get off before Union Station and take a taxi. When the time came, he even helped me with my luggage. He wished me good luck as I jumped off, and a few minutes later I was going towards Union Station in a taxi. It was almost 7:50 when we stopped outside the station. I paid the driver quickly, carried my bags and hurried inside. The St.Louis train was all I had time to say to the first porter I saw. You can imagine my disappointment when he pointed to a train that was just moving out of the station.

M: Mmm, these noodles are yummy.

W:Thanks.

M: But you could have put in more tomatoes.

W: What are you trying to say ? I didn’t put enough tomatoes in the sauce, right ?

M: No, I’m just saying you could have put more tomatoes in.

W: Why do you always try to prove that you are right and I’m wrong?

M: I’m not trying to prove anything.I’m just saying if you had put more tomatoes in the sauce, it would be more nutritious.

W: You are trying to show that you are right. If not, how come one minute you said the noodles

were good, and the next minute you said I didn’t put enough tomatoes in the sauce? You suggested that I use more tomatoes when I was making the sauce and I refused. Now you are saying the sauce doesn’t have enough tomatoes in it even though the noodles taste good.

Why do you always have to be right?

M: No, that’s not true. Don’t try to read things into my words. I’m not blaming you for not putting more tomatoes in the sauce or saying you should have accepted my suggestion. It doesn’t have to do with who is right and who is wrong. I’m just saying more tomatoes wouldn’t hurt…

W: See,you are still trying to defend yourself. Oh, I’m tired of this meaningless argument. Let’s just eat.

W: Well. I left school after I’d done my A-levels.

M: What subjects did you take?

W: French, German and art.

M: Art?

W: Well.I really wanted to study art. But a friend of my father’s offered me a job—he’s an accountant in the city.

M: Right. What do you do in your spare time?

W: I like jazz and folk music. I go to the theatre occasionally and act a bit myself. I read quite a lot, and I ‘ve done a bit of photography. Also, I’ve travelled a lot.

M: Very interesting, Miss Smith. I think that’s all I wanted to ask about your background.

Text10

W: It’s amazing to me how international businesss has become. Take my store for example. On any given day, you’ll find imported items from more than 20 different countries on our shelves.

M: How many different varieties of products do you import from China?

W: China provides the bulk of our products inventory, for sure. We import more than 40 different items from China. Most of the imports that come out of China are low-grade plastics or toys. Japan produces many eletronic exports, Germany produces excellent mechanical exports.

M: Do you import any food items?

W: Generally speaking, food items are difficult to import. Food with a short shelf is liable to spoil in the time it takes to ship from one place to another. The only food items we import are specially canned or preserved foods. The shelf life is longer for these products.

M: What do people do when they create viruses?

W: A person has to write the code, test it to make sure it spreads properly and then release the virus. A person also designs the virus’s attack phase, whether it is a silly message or destruction of a hard disk.

M: So why do people do it?

W: There are at least three reasons. The first is the same psychology that drives people to set fires with intention. The second reason has to do with the passion of watching things blow up.

Many people have a fascination with things like explosions and car crashes. The third reason probably involves showing off their power.

Text7

W: Oh, excuse me, Mr. Austin. I almost forgot there is a telephone message here for you.

Dr. Green called and asked you to call him back.

M: Where is he now, do you know?

W: He’s staying in Room 1515, at the Hilton Hotel.

M: Thank you. Do you have the telephone number of the hotel?

W: I’m sorry. I don’t . But you can get it. Just dial 100.

M: Oh, could I trouble you to change a dollar?

W: All right. Here is the change. By the way, the public phones are over there on your right.

M: I see. Thank you.

Text8

W: Excuse me. Have you been here long?

M: Yes. About 45 minutes. I’ve moved forward a total of about 3 feet in that time.

W: Does anyone know what’s causing the delay?

M: If so, no one has let us know. Maybe there aren’t enough people selling tickets this afternoon.

Or maybe their computer is down. I’m sure the concert hasn’t been called off.

W: I just hope they don’t run out of tickets before I get up there. I guess I should have come before lunch.

M: In fact, before I came I tried calling to charge my tickets over the phone, just to avoid this long wait. But they’re not taking phone orders, so you have to come in person.

W: Well, it’ll be two hours before the ticket office closes. Tickets for a good concert are worth waiting for, so I think I’ll just make myself comfortable.

Text9

W: Dad, guess what? Katie won the tickets to the New Era concert next week! Isn’t that cool? M: Really? How did she manage that?

W: She won a radio call-in competition. She just happened to be the first caller to get through

and she answered all the questions they threw at her about the group, so they gave her two free tickets!

M: Well, she must be pretty pleased with herself, then.

W: Are you kidding? She’s over the moon! She even got backstage passes so we’ll be able to meet the boys in the flesh!

M: We? Who’s we?

W: She asked me to go with her. Isn’t that cool? I can go, can’t I Dad?

M: Now, now, aren’t we being a bit hasty here? I thought we made a deal that you would knuckle down and study after your terrible grades at school last term. I don’t think you should be going to pop concerts when you have exams coming up soon.

W: But Dad! This is a once in a lifetime chance to meet New Era! I’ll never get the chance to do this again! And besides, it’s only one night. I promise I’ll study really hard for the rest of the term if you let me go.

M: I’m sorry Christy. You’re not going ot the concert. You’re going to stay at home and study for your exams!

Look at me now and you can’t imagine I was fat and overweight three years ago. I was a professional dancer and I danced for 4-5 hours a day. So you can’t say I didn’t have enough exercise. But I was busy and didn’t have much time for healthy meals. I ate snacks, chocolates and sweet cakes. I also smoked heavily. The result was my weight shot up. It was terrible. I got worried. Then I talked to a lot of people about the food I was eating and they said my diet was rubbish. I changed my food. And in nine months I was down from 133 pounds to 102 pounds. I stopped eating meat, cakes, chocolates , alll sorts of things. Now I eat brown bread, fish and lots of vegetables. I feel good and confident.

M: Really good.

W: That’s great. Now your first solo single is coming out tomorrow. How are you feeling?

M: I’m feeling great, really positive. We’ve worked very hard on the album, and I think we’ve come up with some really good songs.

W: Excellent. Are you doing any concerts?

M: Actually, we’re starting a European tour next week. We’re doing three nights in London.

W: So, how should we get to the theatre ?

M: Let’s take the bus.

W: I hate the bus system in London! The bus drivers are rude, the buses are never on time, and there are few people around who can help you.

M: It’s not that bad. You probably just had a bad experience once.

W: It wasn’t just once. Every single time I take the bus, somehting bad happens to me or to someone else on the bus.

M: We could take the subway, but we’d have to go three stops along one line and then change trains twice.

W: Train fares are twice as expensive as the bus fare, too.

M: If we don’t hurry up, we’ll miss the show. Should we take the bus?

W: We’re already late, so I think we had better take a taxi.

M: I don’t think we’ll be able to find a taxi very easily during rush hour. Let’s just take the bus. W: Fine. Have a look at the timetable to find out when the next one arrives.

N: It looks like it should be here in just a few minutes. Don’t worry. Nothing bad will happen. I’ll even buy your ticket for you.

W: Thanks, that’s nice of you.

M: See, now something good has happened to you on a bus trip!

M: Could you suggest some ways to bring family members close together?

W: Well, I feel it’s vey important for families to have regular meals together. One of my good childhood memories is having dinner with my parents and two sisters. Because my husband and I both work and our three children are busy with their studies, we seldom had a chance to get together as a family. But we thought it would be possible for us to sit down and enjoy meals together every week. First, we tried setting three fixed days: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. But almost everyone was unhappy. Then my son had the idea that everyone could tell me his or her most convenient days and I would choose the the two best days. For

a while, the children were still unhappy with the idea. They said they’d rather spend their

time with their friends playing sports. Gradually though, they began to see these evenings together as interesting and helpful. We loved it. We made plans for trips. We discussed each other’s problems. After a couple of months, anyoner who had to miss the family meal felt regretful. And now, we all feel we’ve been able to build up much stronger relationships within the family than we had before.

Do you know how to get inexpensive airline and train tickets? On a recent flight, Edward was chatting happily with me in the seat until the conversation turned to fares. I bought my ticket three weeks in advance, and paid $ 148. Edward paid the full fare of $ 480. He decided that next time he would find out how to travel for less. Here are some useful ways: To fly for less money, you can buy non-refundable plane tickets two or three months before your trip. The cheapest way to fly is as a courier. In return for delivering a package for a courier company , you get a plane that costs as little as one-quarter of the regular fare or even less if the company needs someone at the last minute. Recently , a courier flew a round trip from New York to Hong Kong $ 105; a regular ticket costs around $1900.

If you are going to do a lot of traveling by train , a train pass will save you money. Train passes can be especially useful in Indian, which has the world’s largest rail system; in Japan, where trains are fast and convenient; and in Europe, where trains go to over 30000 cities. The Rail Europe Group even offer senior passes for those of 60 yars of age and over, youth passes for those under 26 years of age, and provides a great bargain.

Shopping for the perfect wedding gown can be a challenge. With thousands of dresses available in the United States, finding the dress that best suits you can be quite diffficult. It’s a good idea to start dress shopping early—up to a year before your wedding date if possible. Call

the gown stores in advance to set up an appointment with a sales person. Bring the under-garments you plan to wear with your dress to the shop, as well as shoes. If you don’t have your shoes picked out yet, bring dress shoes with a heel about the same height as you think you will wear on your wedding day. At the shops, you will be trying on samples of wedding dresses that can range from size 6 to 18. Remember that the dress you order may vary slightly from the sample you see in the store. For example, if the manufacturing company runs out of one kind of lace, it may substitute a similar one. Who you bring with you when you try on dresses is important. Bring one or two friends whose opinion you trust, but no more than three people. You might also want to bring a camera, so that you can take pictures of each dress you try on and then be able to compare the photos at home. The photos might also be fun to look back on after your wedding, when you show your fiance which dresses you didn’t choose.

W: Yes, sit down, Paul. Now some of your teachers have told me that you are not doing well with your studies. Is the work too difficult?

W: Um, let’s see. Yes, it’s a textile company that seems to import from abroad. That’s odd, isn’t it? What else? … They say the salary is really good. They operate a system of paying you a basic salary and then offering extra money for selling more. They say it is high. And oh, look!

They give you a car to travel round in. Gosh! That’ not bad, is it?

M: Um, do they say anything about experience?

W: Um, Let’s see. No, they want someone young with ambition and enthusiasm. Oh yes, they want graduates, so that’s OK. You’ve been to university. Now what else? Let’s see.

M: There must be some trick.

W: No, the only thing is that you have to travel, but then the company takes care of that. Oh, and you have to be able to get on well with other people. It says that you have to be good on a team.

M: Um, perhaps I’ll have a closer look at that one.

Tourists come to London for many reasons. Do you know that the transportation is a tourist attraction in itself? The London Underground is the oldest and one of the busiest underground railway networks in the world. Often called “ the tube” , the London Underground is a major business with three million passenger journeys made a day, serving 275 stations over 408km of railway. In 2002 and 2003, London Underground drove a total of 65.4 million kilometers. However, some stations fell into disuse and were closed. These stations are called ghost stations, and there are about 40 of these.

The London Underground was formed in 1985, but its history dates back to 1863 when the world’s first underground railway opened in London. The London Underground is divided into a series of main travel zones, in a series of concentric circles ranging out from the center of

London. Asimple journey between two stations is priced based on how many zones you will travel through. The more zones you pass through , the higher the cost is, with a basic single journey single zone fare being £2.
