How long has Mr. Page been teaching?I have just received a letter from my old school, informing me that my former headmaster, Mr. Stuart Page, will be retiring next week. Pupils of the school, old and new, will be sending him a present to mark the occasion. All those who have contributed towards the gift will sign their names in a large album which will be sent to the headmaster's home. We shall all remember Mr. Page for his patience and understanding and for the kindly encouragement he gave us when we went so unwillingly to school. A great many former pupils will be attending a farewell dinner in his honour next Thursday. It is a curious coincidence that the day before his retirement, Mr. Page will have been teaching for a total of forty years. After he has retired, he will devote himself to gardening. For him, this will be an entirely new hobby. But this does not matter, for, as he has often remarked, one is never too old to learn.【课⽂翻译】我刚刚收到母校的⼀封信,通知我说以前的校长斯图亚特.

a. use to 不合乎语法,也不合乎题⽬意思;b. used to 表⽰过去经常性的动作,与前⼀句时态不⼀致;c. is accustomed to (习惯于)意思不完整。

5. a前⼀句中的not telling the truth 意思为“不讲实话”,本句应该选a. telling (说谎)才合乎习惯⽤法,并与前⼀句含义相符。

其他3个选择b. saying (说);c. talking (讲话,交谈);d. speaking (讲说)中,虽然都有“说”,“讲”的含义,但不⽤于“说谎”,或“说实话”这类短语中,只有tell 常⽤于tell the truth, tell a lie 这样的固定短语中,所以应该选a.6. c在钟点前⾯要⽤介词at, 所以应该选c. at 才合乎语法,其他3个选择都不能⽤在钟点前⾯。

7. ca. can't catch (不能赶上) 是现在时,与前半句的动词(broke down)时态不⼀致。

d. mightn't have caught (不应该或不可能赶上) ,⼀般might + have done 表⽰对过去发⽣的事情的猜测,语⽓是不肯定的。

She had left home when the phone rang.其否定表达为:sb. had not done sth.如:She had not left home when the phone rang.其疑问句只要把had提到主语前面即可,如:- Had she left home when the phone rang?- Yes, she had.- No, she hadn't.When had she left home?

采用一般过去时的时间状语从句,如:when he came back。

本课侧重学习的是时间状语从句中过去完成时的用法,常见的从句连接词有:when、after、before、until、as soon as。

如:When he came back, his wife had already flown to Paris. After she had finished her job, she went to the cinema.before I gave him the notebook, he had bought a new one.She did not go to sleep until her husband had come back home.As soon as she had arrived in London, she called her mother.(二)本课继续学习的是过去完成时的用法,侧重表“一...

的句型一般是由as soon as引导,但另外常用的句型还有:hardly...when...;no sooner...than...。
