一、中READING (PART ONE )(共7小题,共7.0分)· Read these sentences . · Which type does each sentence (1--7) describe? · For each sentence mark one letter A, B, C or D on your Answer Sheet.
第1题
A. Microcomputer
A microcomputer is a desktop or notebook size computing device that uses a microprocessor as its Central Processing Unit, or CPU. Microcomputers are also called Personal Computers (PCs), home computers, small business computers, and micros. The smallest, most compact are called laptops. When they first appeared, they were considered single user devices, and they were capable of handling only four, eight, or 16 bits of information at one time. More recently the distinction between microcomputers and large, mainframe computers (as well as the smaller mainframe type systems called minicomputers) has become blurred, as newer
microcomputer models have increased the speed and data handling capabilities of their CPUs into the 256 bit, or even much more bit multi-user range.
B. Minicomputer
A minicomputer is a mid-level computer built to perform complex computations while dealing efficiently with a high level of input and output from users connected via terminals. Minicomputers also frequently connect to other minicomputers on a network and distribute processing among all the attached machines. Minicomputers are used heavily in transaction processing applications and as interfaces between mainframe computer systems and wide area networks (WAN).
C. Mainframe Computer
A mainframe computer is a high level computer designed for the most intensive computational tasks. Mainframe computers are often shared by multiple users connected to the computer via terminals. The most powerful mainframes, called supercomputers, perform highly complex and time consuming computations and are used heavily in both pure and applied research by scientists, large businesses, and the military.
D. Supercomputer
In computer science, supercomputers are large, extremely fast, and expensive computers used for complex or sophisticated calculations, typically, machines capable of pipelining instruction execution and providing vector instructions. A supercomputer can, for example, perform the enormous number of calculations required to draw and animate a moving spaceship in a motion picture. Supercomputers are also used for weather forecasting, large scale scientific modeling, and oil exploration

and so on and so like.
E. Distributed or Grid Computing
The power needed for some calculations is more than even a single supercomputer can manage. In distributed computing using a PC grid many computers of all sizes can work on parts of the problem and their results are pooled. A number of current projects rely on volunteers with computers connected to the Internet. The computers do the work when they are not busy otherwise. The projects that need distributed computing are highly technical. For example, the SETI @ Home project looks for signs of intelligent communication in radio signals coming from space. (SETI stands for Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence. )
They are often used for jobs like engineering design and testing, serious decryption, economic forecasting, etc.

剑桥商务英语中级考试练习题剑桥商务英语中级考试练习题Trouble with TeamworkMary Owen examines the role and efficiency of teamsRecruiters say that candidates who can give examples of work they have done as members of a successful team are in as strong a position as those who can point to significant individual achievement. Indeed, too much of the latter may suggest that the person concerned is not a team player - one of the more serious failings in the book of management. The importance of being a team player is a side effect of the increasing interaction across departments and functional divides. Instead of pushing reports, paperwork and decisions around the organisation, teams provide a dynamic meeting place where ideas can be shared and expertise more carefully targeted at important business issues, says Steve Gardner, in his book Key Management Concepts. He adds, Globalisation has added a further dimension to teamwork. Multinational teams now study policy decisions in the light of their impact on the local market. But is teamworking being overdone? Some managers are on as many as seven or eight different teams, says Dr Cathy Bandy, a psychologist who recently ran a conference on the subject. They take up so much time that managers cant get on with core tasks. Forming teams and having meetings has, she says, become an end in itself, almost regardless of purpose. There is also the danger of an unhealthy desire to keep the team going after the work has been done. People feel the need to belong, and team membership can provide a kind of psychological support. The idea behind teamworking is that, when the right groupof people is brought together, a force develops which is greater than the sum of their individual talents. This is often true in sport, where good players can reach unexpected heights as members of an international team. However, few business situations have as clear a set of objectives, or as clear criteria of success or failure, as winning a match. In business, everyone needs to be clear about what the challenge is and whether a team is the right way of approaching it, says Steve Gardner. Unfortunately, people focus instead on who the members of the team should be and what roles they are to play Dr Bandy agrees. There is always a danger that teams can turn into commit。

2020年BEC剑桥商务英语中级阅读理解练习题一Read the article below about stress management, and answer questions 13-20 on the opposite page.。

A Lesson In Stress ManagementDemands placed on us at work can often lead to considerable worry and discomfort. There are, however, ways of protecting ourselves from the stress we face at work. We interviewed Jane Collard, a consultant in stress management.1. In Jane Collard’s opinion, stre ss is becoming an increasingly common feature of the workplace. Stress is a highly individual reaction, which varies considerably from person to person, and it is difficult for some employees to avoid it. Indeed, stress is regarded by many as part of the organizational culture of our institutions: itcomes with the job. Recent figures indicate that time taken off work because of stress has increased by 500 per cent since the 1950s. Undoubtedly, changes in working conditions have led to greater pressure at work at all levels. With reductions in staffing, workloads for individual employees have increased. In addition, many employees are left worrying about the security of their jobs.2. On the stress management courses that she runs, Jane Collard tries to make the trainees realise that stress in itself is not harmful. Everyone needs a certain level of stress to enable them to feel motivated and to perform effectively. A complete absence of stress can be as damaging as overstress, since it can make people lose interest in their work, and even lead to depression. The difficulties occur when the amount of stress rises above a level which is healthy for a particular individual. If this happens, the effects are very obvious and the trainees are taught to recognize the signs. Stress may be expressed physically, for example through headaches and tiredness, or through emotional problems such as depression. A person suffering from stress may also start to behave differently, and can be difficult to deal with.3. While it may not always be possible to prevent stress, there are a number of ways in which it can be controlled. The first thingthat the trainees learn is how to manage their time effectively. This involves, first of all, setting realistic goals for both the short and long term. Once this framework has been established, tasks are then prioritised on a daily basis. The trainees are also reminded that when they are under pressure the less important items should be left, and they should never hesitate to delegate. Everyone is encouraged to look at ways of reducing ’wasted time ’, for example by grouping similar tasks together or dealing with items immedkiately.4. Jane feels that one of the most useful features of the course is that it enables trainees to deal with those demands or deadlines that they regard as unreasonable. They are encouraged to avoid being defensive, but at the same time they are advised not to be afraid of saying ’no’. They are asked to give reasons only if necessary. The training helps them to foresee difficult situations or unwanted demands, and they learn how to prepare themselves mentally. Everyone is encouraged not to get stuck in negative thought patterns, where stress can feed a circular sense of helplessness. One solution they discuss is to think of a more encouraging alternative for each negative message. They learn, for example, to remind themselves that nothing terrible happens when a demand is refused or a deadline missed. Life goes on.Questions 13-16For questions 13-16, choose the best title for each numbered paragraph from the list below. For each numbered paragraph 1-4, mark one letter (A-G) on your Answer Sheet. Thanks to sophisticated IT and communications systems, businesses can now market their products on a truly global scale. The world is indisputably becoming a smaller place, as service and manufacturing companies search the international marketplace for new suppliers and clients. Businesses must, however, be aware that once they expand the area in which they operate, they face increased competition. The standard and quality of their goods become increasingly important in keeping up with competitors. But most of all, it is the service element accompanying the goods which is crucial to a company’s success in a particular market. This new philosophy has led to many companies, some of which have even offered products of a lesser quality, gaining success overseas.Although globalisation may, in some senses, have brought national economies closer together, societies around the world still have radically different expectations, processes and standards. These are not a function of economic change, but are moredeep-rooted and difficult to alter. They can be a major problem for businesses expanding abroad, with the greatest obstacle of all being the language barrier. If you have to deal with clients, suppliers and distributors in a range of countries, you will not only need the skills to communicate with them, you will also need to reconcile any national biases you have with the diverse ways of doing business that exist around the globe. The value of effective communication is not to be underestimated. New technology such as videoconferencing and email has played a part in making the communication process easier, and it may also be possible that the introduction of language interpretation software will help with some global communications problems. But, of course, it is the human element of the communication process that is so vital in business, especially in negotiations, presentations and team-building. It is essential for managers to meet regularly with staff, customers and partners, so that issues can be discussed, messages communicated and feedback obtained. The value of well-organised language training is immense, and can bring benefits to all levels and departments within a multinational organisation. Unfortunately, however, many organisations have a very narrow view when it comes to training of any kind. Often, an urgent requirement has to be identified before training is authorised. Then, a training company is employed or aprogramme is developed in-house, the team is trained, and that is seen as the end of the matter. However, the fact remains that training programmes are effective only if they are relevant to a company’s broader, long-term needs. They should be regarded as an investment rather than a cost.Changes in expectations and attitudes are certain to continue for companies that trade globally. Although such companies are not yet faced with their international partners and clients demanding that business be conducted in their mother tongue, they realise that overseas competition is increasing fast. If these companies want to continue to achieve success on the international trading circuit, they must be prepared to adapt to situations and speak the local language. If not, someone else will.13 According to the first paragraph, improved communications have enabled companies toA offer a wider variety of products and services.B expand beyond their domestic markets.C perform better than their international competitors.D open more manufacturing facilities abroad.14 Some companies have succeeded at an international level even though they haveA produced inferior goods.B failed to adapt products for local markets.C ignored the standards set by their competitors.D reduced the standard of the service they offer.15 Approaches to doing business vary between countries because ofA local economic considerations.B the existence of cultural differences.C strong wishes to remain independent.D regulations about business practices.16 The writer thinks that the use of modern technology willA speed up the process of language interpretation.B never replace the need for face-to-face interaction.C help solve the problems involved in maintaining strong teams.D not lead to greater communication between companies and clients.17 A common weakness of training courses is that theyA are developed by the wrong team.B do not give good value for money.C are provided only if there is an immediate need.D do not deal with a company’s specific requirements.18 Why should companies do business in the language of the countries they are operating in?A to prevent other companies taking their businessB to help them find new international partnersC to meet clients’ current expectationsD to become more aware of their competitors’ activities《Speaking Your Customers’ Language》,说客户的语言。

BEC真题一C 1 Listen to what your boss tells you about how well you are working.D 2 Realise that your boss will occasionally need to be left alone.A 3 Comment on your bosss work in a positive spirit.B 4 Try to impress your boss with your thoroughness.A 5 Do not hesitate to involve your boss if you have difficulties with your work.B 6 Show your boss that you are capable of working at a higher level.C 7 Speak to your boss, even about matters not directly related to your work.MANAGE YOUR BOSSAdvice from four top business people on how you should treat your bossAThe ConsultantNo boss likes nasty surprises. Thinking you can solve a serious problem before he or she finds out is a doomed strategy. Much better to inform your boss about the situation early on, together with your suggested solution. Also, remember that bosses like praise as much as any employee. Do this without making it obvious, if only to earn the right to criticise (constructively, of course). Consideration is the key word. Treat bosses as you hope to be treated - it should help you to move up to the next level.BThe DirectorOf course there are all the formal things in managing your boss -ensuring that you come to meetings well prepared, that you have a good eye for detail, and so on. But you also need to distinguish effectively between things that are important and things that are merely small details. Bosses like it if you can see the big picture because they want to be able to delegate. So its all about psychology, as well as performance.CThe ChairmanBosses want people to understand their objectives, their way of working and the pressures they are under. If you can understand what sort of individual your boss is, it is easier to appreciate why certain reactions might arise, and thus avoid problems. Also, keep the lines of communication with your boss open. You need to receive ongoing feedback on whether your work is effective, asking about what you do not understand, and, if necessary, discussing personal issues from outside the workplace. When the gap between you is reduced, so are the difficulties.DThe Chief ExecutiveUnderstand that a boss will want to take the glory when things go well. After all, they take ultimate responsibility, so they deserve some of the credit. Also, find out about your bosss outside interests, as this can help to improve the relationship. You may find you have an interest in common. Similarly, recognise that everyone is human, and there are times when a request from you may be unwelcome. Get to know your bosss Personal Assistant, who can advise you when it is a good time to talk to him or her.《Manage your boss》,管理你的老板,文章是四个业内人士就如何与老板相处给出了自己的意见,哪些应当做的,哪些不应当做的,是一门技巧,更是一门学问。

ACOUISITION When should a company consider acquisition as a way forward?
There are many circumstances in which a company may wish to take over another organisation through an acquisition. The need to keep up with a changing environment often dominates thinking about acquisitions. One compelling reason to develop by acquisition is the speed with which it allows the company to enter new product or market areas. This is particularly true of e-commerce.
The Stars of the Future
A. Existing management research does not tell us much about how to find and develop highflyers, those people who have the potential to reach the top of an organisation. As a result, organisations are left to formulate their own systems. A more effective overall policy for developing future leaders is needed, which is why the London Business School has launched the Tomorrow's Leaders

Have you finished the report for tomorrow's meeting?Sarah: No, not yet. I've been having some technical difficulties. I need more time to finalize it.John: That's unfortunate. The deadline has already been set. How about submitting it later in the day?Sarah: Well, instead of submitting it late, why don't we work on it together? I think we can finish it on time if we collaborate.Question: Sarah suggests working on the report together.答案解析:根据对话内容,我们可以得出Sarah提议说他们一起工作来完成报告,因此选项C是正确答案。
