My School Year at Xi'an High SchoolHi there! My name is Xiao Ming and I'm a 5th grade student at Xi'an High School of New and Hi-Tech Industries. I just finished up the 2020-2021 school year and I wanted to tell you all about it. It was definitely a year like no other with the coronavirus pandemic going on. But my teachers and my school did a great job of keeping us safe while still letting us learn and have fun.The year started off a little weird because we had to go back to online learning for a few weeks due to a COVID-19 outbreak in Xi'an over the summer. I didn't mind too much though because I'm pretty good with computers and videoconferencing by now after doing it so much the previous year. My teachers put up pre-recorded video lessons for us to watch and then we'd have live class meetings to ask questions, go over homework, and even have group activities together. It was kind of cool because we got to have virtual guest speakers from all over the world join our classes. One week we had a scientist from NASA teaching us about the Mars rover missions. Another time we had an author from Canada reading her new children's book over video. My favorite though waswhen we got to have a zookeeper from the Taipei Zoo introduce us to some endangered species and tell us how they're working to protect them. The virtual field trips were also awesome - we went inside the Egyptian pyramids, walked through ancient Athens, and even got to see the surface of the Moon! After a few weeks of remote learning, we finally got to return to campus in late August. Of course, there were a lot of new rules and safety protocols in place. We had to get our temperatures checked every morning before entering the school and wear masks all day except for when eating. The classrooms had been rearranged so all the desks were spaced out and we had plastic dividers installed on them. Recess and gym class were split up into smaller groups on separate playgrounds to avoid too many kids congregating. It was definitely an adjustment at first. I missed being able to collaborate closely with my friends on group projects and having big birthday parties in class to celebrate. But my teachers made sure to incorporate a lot of fun and creative ways for us to socialize safely like virtual lunch bunches and outdoor mask parties. We also wrote a ton of letters and made video messages for the elderly residents at nursing homes who couldn't havevisitors. It felt good to do something kind for others during a difficult time.In terms of academics, we worked hard as always at Xi'an High! Math was probably my biggest challenge as we started learning more advanced algebraic concepts. It took me a while to get the hang of solving for variables and graphing linear equations. English was a highlight as we read classics like Charlotte's Web, Where the Red Fern Grows, and The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. I love getting lost in the magic of fiction!Science was definitely my favorite subject this year though. We went really in-depth learning about biology, studying everything from the microscopic units of cells all the way up to the complexity of the human body's systems working together. We even got to dissect frogs (which was a little gross at first but actually pretty fascinating). Our big project at the end of the year was developing our own mock treatments and preventative plans for major diseases like cancer, diabetes, and HIV/AIDS. It gave me a whole new appreciation for just how remarkable the medical field is.Outside of academics, I was also really happy to be back participating in extracurriculars and school clubs again, even ifthey looked a bit different with social distancing precautions. I stayed super busy juggling basketball, art club, STEM club, and student council. Basketball games were intra-squad scrimmages rather than playing other schools. Art club met virtually but we still had some amazing guest teachers giving us lessons in everything from oil painting to stop motion animation. STEM club was probably my favorite overall because we kept doing super cool hands-on projects like building rovers, coding games, and even launching rockets! The social distancing rules applied to extracurriculars also meant we didn't get to go on any overnight field trips. But the teachers got creative by planning lots of incredible day trips for us around the Xi'an area. We visited ancient sites like the Terracotta Warriors, the City Wall, and the Shaanxi History Museum. We did an underground boat tour through the Reed Flute Caves. And we went on several hiking excursions like climbing Mount Huashan(which had me terrified with its crazy narrow paths along the cliffside!). Learning about the rich history and natural beauty of Shaanxi Province was definitely a highlight.Even though holiday breaks looked a little different too with public events shut down, my family made sure to still celebrate and make wonderful memories. For Mid-Autumn Festival, wehad a huge backyard festival with games, mooncakes, lanterns, and even a small bonfire. My grandparents visited for a few weeks during the winter break and we all worked together on building an enormous model of the Forbidden City out of popsicle sticks and cardboard. And of course Chinese New Year was full of cleaning, decorating, feasting, and giving of red envelopes (my favorite part!).As the year came to a close, we finally got to have anin-person graduation ceremony for my grade in early June. We had to limit the number of guests and it was held outdoors with spacing between families. But it was so worth it to be able to walk across the stage and celebrate four years of elementary school with my classmates. In some ways, the 2020-2021 school year was one we'll never forget with all its disruptions and safety measures. But my teachers and Xi'an High worked so hard to make it not just educational but really meaningful and memorable too. I'm sad to be leaving but I know I'm prepared to take on the challenges of middle school. Thanks for an awesome elementary school experience!。

2024I. English response:English response:As a student at Gaoxin No.1 High School, I have always been interested in the topic of cultural diversity. In my opinion, cultural diversity is a crucial aspect of our society that should be celebrated and embraced. One example that comes to mind is when I participated in a cultural exchange program with students from a school in Japan. Through this experience, I was able to learn about their customs, traditions, and way of life. It was fascinating to see how different our cultures were, yet how much we had in common. Despite the language barrier, we were able to communicate and form friendships that transcended cultural differences.Another example is when I attended a multiculturalfestival in my city. I was able to taste delicious foods from different countries, watch traditional dances, and listen to music from around the world. It was a truly enriching experience that opened my eyes to the beauty of diversity.Overall, I believe that embracing cultural diversitynot only enriches our lives but also promotes understanding and tolerance among people from different backgrounds. Itis important for us to respect and appreciate the uniqueness of each culture and learn from one another.II.
