Period 1 warming up & reading

Teaching goals:

1. knowledge aims:

Learn and master the new words and expressions in this period.

(1)Talk about the fine quality of great people to improve the students’ speaking ability.

(2)Do reading practice to improve the students’ reading abilities.

(1)Learn about some great people and qualities they have in common.

(2)Develop the students’ moral quality.

Teaching important points:

(1)Talk about the fine quality of great people to improve the students” speaking ability.

(2)Enable the students to grasp the main idea of the passage.

(1)How to express their own opinions and ideas.

Fast reading and careful reading; asking and a nswering activities to check the student’s understanding of the text; Individual ,pair or group work.

Step 1. Warming up

(Before class, get the Ss to enjoy a beautiful song Hero for 3-5 minutes. After enjoying, ask the Ss

some questions in a moving atmosphere.)

T: Well, for a beautiful song, do you know what it is about?

S : Hero

Q: What is hero/heroine?

Ss: …

T: What qualities do you think a great person should have?

(Show a picture of. Nelson Mandela)

Get to know Nelson Mandela

Before we go to read Elias’s story let’s first try to know about Nelson Mandela by reading the following short passage.

1918 Born in South Africa

1940 finished law degree at the university

1944—1980He fought for the rights(权利)of black people for all the time.

1982 put into a prison

1990 released from prison

1993 won the Nobel Peace Prize(诺贝尔和平奖)

1994became President(总统) of South Africa.

Step 2 lead-in

T: It seems you know Nelson Mandela a little. Do you want to know more about him? Let’s read the following story and see what Elias thinks of Nelson Mandela.
