Unit 5 Nelson Mandela--- a Modern Hero

Period 1 warming up & reading

Teaching goals:

1. knowledge aims:

Learn and master the new words and expressions in this period.

Words：hero，quality，willing，active，republic，principle，nationalism，livelihood，fight，peaceful，prison，prisoner，law，advise，continue，fee，gold，passbook，ANC，youth，league，stage，vote，position，accept，violence，equal

（1）Talk about the fine quality of great people to improve the students’ speaking ability.

Step 1. Warming up

(Before class, get the Ss to enjoy a beautiful song Hero for 3-5 minutes. After enjoying, ask the Ss

some questions in a moving atmosphere.)

T: Well, for a beautiful song, do you know what it is about?

Get to know Nelson Mandela

Before we go to read Elias’s story let’s first try to know about Nelson Mandela by reading the following short passage.

1918 Born in South Africa

1940 finished law degree at the university

1944—1980He fought for the rights(权利）of black people for all the time.

1982 put into a prison

1990 released from prison

1993 won the Nobel Peace Prize(诺贝尔和平奖)

1994became President(总统) of South Africa.
