下面分别对这三种制式进行简要介绍。
NTSC、PAL、SECAM三大制式采用区域分布图一、NTSC（National Televison System Committee）制式NTSC制式，又简称为N制，是1952年12月由美国国家电视标准委员会（National Television Syste m Committee，缩写为NTSC）制定的彩色电视广播标准，属于同时制，帧率为每秒29.97fps，扫描线为5 25，隔行扫描，画面比例为4:3，分辨率为720x480。
这种制式的色度信号调制包括了平衡调制和正交调制两种，解决了彩色黑白电视广播兼容问题，但存在相位容易失真、色彩不太稳定的问题，需要色彩控制（t int control）来手动调节颜色，这是NTSC的最大缺点之一。
美国、加拿大、墨西哥等大部分美洲国家以及日本、台湾、韩国、菲律宾等均采用这种制式，香港部份电视公司也采用NTSC制式广播，其中两大主要分支是NTSC-US（又名NTSC-U/C）与NTSC-J。
二、SECAM（Se'quential Co'uleur A Me'moire）制式SECAM制式，又称塞康制，法文全名“Séquential Couleur Avec Mémoire”，意为“按顺序传送彩色与存储”，1966年法国研制成功，它属于同时顺序制，帧率每秒25帧，扫描线625行，隔行扫描，画面比例4:3，分辨率720x576。
在信号传输过程中，亮度信号每行传送，而两个色差信号则逐行依次传送，即用行错开传输时间的办法来避免同时传输时所产生的串色以及由其造成的彩色失真。
