AHaving experienced a shocking electrical accident, which caused him to become both blind and deaf, James Franco’s world became complete ly dark and quiet for almost ten years. The loss of sight and hearing threw him into such sorrow that he tried a few times to put an end to his life. His family, especially his wife, did their best to tend and comfort him and finally he regained the will to live. One hot summer afternoon, he was taking a walk with a stick near his house when a thunderstorm started all at once. He stood under a large tree to avoid getting wet, but he was struck by the lightning. Witnesses thought he was dead but he woke up 20 minutes later, lying face down in muddy water. He was trembling badly, but when he opened his eyes, he could hardly believe what he saw:a tree and a muddy road. When Mrs. Franco came running up to him, shouting to their neighbors to call for help, he could see her and hear her voice for the first time in nearly ten years. The news of James regaining his sight and hearing quickly spread and many doctors came to examine him. Most of them said that he regained his sight and hearing from the shock he got from the lightning. However, none of them could give a compellent answer as to why this should happen. The only reasonable explanation given by one doctor was that, since James losthis sight and hearing as a result of a sudden shock, perhaps, the only way for him to regain them was by another sudden shock.21. The reason why James attempted to kill himself was that _________.A. a terrible electrical accident happened to himB. nobody in the world cared about himC. he was struck by the lightning once moreD. he had to live in a dark and silent world22. The tea gardens in Hatton, Sri Lanka are actually large tea estates. The best tea usually comes from plants grown on high grounds, the cool hilltops with rows and rows of tea plants. The plants are about one meter apart. The plant is often pruned so that it remains only 60 to 90 centimeters high. Pruning is important because it encourages the growth of tender shoots, or young leaves. It is from these shoots that the best tea is got.Practically all the tea pickers are women. The estates prefer to employ women pickers because they are more careful. Their thin fingers can easily remove the twin leaves and new shoots from the plant, which are the parts used for processing tea. The pickers carry large baskets into which they throw their pickings. A skilled worker can harvest between 9 to 14 kilograms of tea leaves a day. Usually new shoots can be picked from the plants about every ten or fifteen days.Processing tea shoots into our familiar dry tea leaves requires great care and skill. There are various methods of processing depending on the type of tea required. For black tea, the young green leaves are first spread out shelves to dry. This process removes much of its water and the leaves become soft. After this, the leaves are passed through heavy rollers. This operation will press the leaves for juices which give the tea both its color and taste. Then the leaves are spread out on floors and left to ferment(发酵)under wet conditions. Fermentation develops the rich taste of black tea. The fermented leaves are then dried with a hot-air blower until they become rolled-up black leaves. The final step is to sort and grade them before the black tea is ready for sale to countries all over the world.29. T ea pickings can be done biweekly.DSome inventions are so useful, but seem so simple, that we wonder why no one thought of them long ago.Post-it Notes were invented about twenty years ago by Art Fry, a scientist at 3M Company. The idea for the product came from an awful experience he often had while singing in his church choir. Fry used pieces of paper as bookmarks to mark the places in his book of songs, but these bookmarks were always falling out. Around that time, Fry heard about a new adhesive (粘合剂) that a colleague, Dr. Spence Silver, had created. This adhesive was special because it was strong enough to hold papers together, but not strong enough to tear the paper when it was removed.A short time later, Fry realized that his new invention had even more uses than being a great bookmark. He came to this realization when he wrote a note on one of his new “bookmarks” and attached it to a report he was going to give to a colleague. Soon, co-workers were asking Fry for more of his invention so that they could use the new type of notes themselves.Fry and some other people at 3M believed so much in the new product that they asked the company to give away thousands of the “sticky pieces of paper” for trial use. When some salespeople at 3M went to offices and showed workers just how helpful the new type of notes could be, they immediately received many orders. As more and more people discovered howuseful Post-it Notes could be, the product took off.32. How did Dr. Spence help Art Fry?A. His adhesive made Art’s invention possible.B. As early as the 19th century, people produced and read books of drawing. In many ways, they were similar to modern comics. They contained stories of naughty children and playful animals. The owl and the elephant were usually wise animals, ready to give advice. The lion and the tiger were brave. The fox and the wolf were cunning(狡猾的)greedy and dangerous.A century ago, an American newspaper published the first full-color comic strip. It was so popular that sales of the newspaper, Morning Journal, increased quickly. Since then, newspapers throughout the world have included comic strips. In modern times, comics are popular in China, Japan, the USA and almost everywhere. Not even video games or CD-ROMs have reduced their popularity. Names such as Snoopy, Woodstock and Garfield are well known in dozens of countries. The Peanuts comic strip appears in over 2,000 newspapers and in more than 25 languages. People believe that its creator, Charles M. Schultz, earned US$60 million a year.Perhaps one day, you may like to create your own comic strip and become a millionaire. First, you must think of a good plot. It should be funny, exciting or interesting in some way. It should have plenty of action. Moreover, the language must be realistic and simple. The words should suit the characters i n your story. One type of person might say, “Please be quiet and listen to what we have to say.” But another type of character might simply say, “Shut up and listen!”Furthermore, the characters in your story must be clear to readers. They should be obviously good or bad ---- and not a mixture of both. A leader must be stronger or cleverer than his or her followers. In many comic strips ---- especially those showing crime of adventure ---- there should also be a hero or heroine. This will attract the reader to keep on reading the story.21. The underlined word “plot” is similar in meaning to _____.A. placeB. stripC. storyD. character22. Which of the following is NOT the name of a cartoon Character?A. Snoopy.B. Peanuts.C. Woodstock.D. Garfield.23. In the 19th century, the wolf in the cartoons was NOT _____.A. cunningB. dangerousC. greedyD. braveBA Swiss airplane powered only by energy from the sun left from Abu Dhabi early on March 9. Its creators hope the plane will make the first around—the—world journey without any fuel. The plane is called Solar Impulse 2. It has one seat and is made from carbon fiber. The planeweighs only as much as a car but its wings are wider than a Boeing 747. The plane’s wings stretch 72 meters across. Those wings include 17,000 solar units or cells that catch the sun’s energy. The energy allows the plane to fly day and night. Two Swiss scientists built the plane. Bertrand Piccard is also an explorer who made the first none—stop flight around the world in a balloon, while Borschberg is an engineer and has trained fighter pilots. The scientists say they are not trying to change the airplane industry. Instead, they want to show that new energy sources and technologies can a chieve what some say is impossible. “We want to show that we can fly day and night in an aircraft without a drop of fuel,” Mr. Piccard said. Some parts of the trip will require the pilots to be in the tiny plane for five to six days and nights in a row. So it is good that the pilot’s seat is also a toilet. The plane’s route begins in the United Arab Emirates. The pilots also plan stops in Oman, India, and China(the first stop in Chongqing, and then in Nanjing). They will cross the Pacific Ocean, stop in the United States, and continue over southern Europe or North Africa. They plan to arrive back in the United Arab Emirates in late July or early August.Internet viewers can go to the Solar Impulse website to see the plane’s location and listen to broadcasts from the pilots.24. How long will the flight last?A. About three months.B. About four months.C. About five months.D. About half a year.25. The plane’s wings are made so wide in order to ________.A. fly more smoothlyB. get enough energyC. look more beautifulD. make sure of its safety26. The scientists have made Solar Impulse 2 to _______.A. cut the cost of making a planeB. go on a tour around the worldC. show their ability in science and technologyD. prove it’s possible to fly with solar energy only27. What is the best title for the text?A. A long flight without fuelB. The first solar—powered planeC. Solar—powered plane starts its world tourD. A plane with the longest wings in the worldCThe age at which kids first fall victim to bullying (欺侮)could influence how strongly they are affected, suggests a new study. And,surprisingly,it is not the youngest kids who are hurt the most in the long term.Bullying can have long-lasting effects, but particularly when it begins in adolescence, the researchers say. People subjected to either verbal (口头的)or physical bullying are known to be at greater risk of developing depression, anxiety disorders or to behave violently. But not everyone reacts in this way.Children bullied for the first time before they hit adolescence seem to get over it,but those who are bullied for the first time later on in adolescence seem to become more aggressive or are more likely to turn to drink as a means of coping. These are the conclusions ofpsychologist Matthew Newman and colleagues from the University of Texas at Austin,US.The team gave questionnaires to nearly 1,500 college students regarding their experience of physical and psychological bullying before adolescence—before high school—and in late adolescence—at high school. They assessed mood and mental state, judging by signs of anxiety or depression, such as sleeplessness. The group was also questioned about how they would react to certain embarrassing situations, such as humiliation.People who were bullied all revealed slightly higher levels of stress. But while those bullied earlier in life seemed to respond normally to provocation (挑畔),people bullied for the first time late in adolescence are more withdrawn and sensitive to violence. There are also sex differences between those bullied for the first time during adolescence, with females more likely to react aggressively when provoked and males are much more likely to turn to alcohol to escape bad situations. The best solution in all cases was strong social support, whether from friends, family or school. Those with no one to share their problems with suffered the most.So perhaps it is best not to shelter children completely from bullying early on,suggests Newman. “They may get stressed, but unhealthy coping really jumps out when they are bullied for the first time later on. ”28. What determines the degree of bullying's effect on people according to the study?A. The reason why they are bullied.B. The place where they are first bullied.C. The age at which they are first bullied.D. The person who first bullies them.29. What may happen to those first bullied later on in adolescence according to Newman andhis colleagues?A. Some are likely to be more aggressive.B. They seem to easily get over the effect of bullying.C. Most of them will respond to bullying normally.D. Most of them are afraid of sharing their problems.30. What does the underlined word “humiliation” in Paragraph 4 mean?A. Carrying out an important plan.B. Being made to feel ashamed.C. Trying hard to survive an accident.D. Feeling hopeless in an emergency.31. The sex differences between people bullied for the first time during adolescence arereflected in .A. the support they get from the societyB. the effect bullying has on themC. the way they react to bullyingD. the type of bullying they receiveDPeople who are cheerful and relaxed are less likely to suffer from colds. It’s pos sible that being full of vim and vigor helps the body fight illnesses, say the researchers from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in Pittsburgh.“We need to take more seriously the possibility that a positive emotional style is a majorplayer in disease ri sk,” says psychologist Sheldon Cohen, the study’s lead researcher. In a previous study, Cohen and his colleagues found that people who tended to be cheerful and lively were least likely to develop sniffles, coughs, and other cold symptoms. Those findings w ere interesting, but they didn’t prove that a person’s attitude affects whether he or she gets sick. Instead, it was still probable that a person’s underlying personality is what matters.Evidence suggests, for instance, that certain people are naturally more likely to be outgoing and optimistic, with high self-respect and a sense of control over life. This would mean that who we are, not how we feel, finally decides our chances of catching colds. To figure out which mattered more (per sonality or emotions). The CMU team interviewed 193 healthy adults. The researchers talked to each person over the phone every evening for 2 weeks. They told the researchers about the positive and negative feelings that they had experienced that day.The results showed that everyone in the study was equally likely to get infected. Their symptoms, however, differed depending on the types of emotions that they had reported over the previous 2 weeks.Among those who reported good moods and had been infected with the flu virus, for example, 28 percent developed coughs and stuffy (堵塞)noses. On the other hand, those symptoms struck 41 percent of people who had been less positive. Scientists argue about whether negative emotions or positive emotions have a stronger effect on how healthy we are. For now, it cannot hurt to look on the bright side more often than not.32. What is the text mainly about?A. How to get rid of colds.B. Attitude determines life.C. Smiles turn away colds.D. Different opinions about colds.33. The phrase “full of vim and vigor” underlined in Paragraph 1 probably means___________.A.ignorantB. Well-informedC. energeticD. in low spirits34.According to the research, persons who are likely to catch colds should be those __________?A. Who have negative attitude towards their life.B. Who are very emotional and optimisticC. Who are open-minded and outgoingD. Who have trouble with their noses35.The last paragraph implies that __________.A. positive and negative emotions have good aspects.B. people who have been less negative tend to catch colds.C. Keeping an optimistic state of mind is good for health.D. positive emotions have a stronger effect on health.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

So, producers made electronic cigarettes as a safer smoking choice ---- safer than tobacco. Although e-cigarettes contain the drug nicotine like cigarettes, they do not use tobacco and you do not light them. They are powered by battery. However, if e-cigarettes are so safe, why has the United States Center for Disease Control (CDC )seen an increase in telephone calls about e-cigarette poisonings? The answer is children. Most of the calls are from people worried about children who have played with the devices. In the period of one month this year, the Center said 215 people called the Center with e-cigarette concerns. More than half of these calls were for children aged five and younger. The devices had made them sick.Tim McAfee is director of the Center's Office on Smoking and Health. He says the problem is regulation, meaning, the U. S. federal government does not control e-cigarettes even though they contain liquid nicotine. Mr. McAfee adds that liquid nicotine is a well-known danger. Mr. McAfee explains that nicotine poisoning happens when it gets into the skin, gets into the eyes试卷第2页,共12页or is swallowed. It can cause stomach pain or a sense of unbalance. And too much nicotine can kill.Tim McAfee says e-cigarettes do not create the level of risk to people that tobacco products do. He notes that almost 500,000 Americans die each year from cigarettes. "So, cigarettes are the winner in that contest." E-cigarettes do not contain hundreds of harmful chemicals that are found in real cigarettes. So, the U. S. Surgeon General Boris D. Lushniak has suggested that e-cigarettes may be a useful tool for adults trying to end their tobacco use.But McAfee worries that teenagers may think electronic cigarettes are harmless. They could become addicted to the nicotine and then start smoking real cigarettes. In other words, he fears that for young people fake e-cigarettes could be a "gateway" to the real thing. 1、What do the producers think of e-cigarettes?A .Dangerous.B .Expensive.C .Safer.D .Cheaper. 2、Why did the CDC receive so many calls about e-cigarettes? A .Parents feared that their children might get poisoned. B .Parents found the device useless in quitting smoking. C .Children swallowed the liquid nicotine from the device. D .Children might get addicted to playing with the device. 3、It can be inferred from the passage that . A. the CDC wants to develop a better type of e-cigarettes B. the government is in favor of the use of e-cigarettes C. Surgeon General Boris D. Lushniak is a heavy smoker D. smokers most probably can't quit smoking using e-cigarettes 4、What is Tim McAfee's opinion about smoking? A .Adults should use harmless e-cigarettes. It is the largest of the West Indian rock iguanas, one of the most endangered groups of lizards. This species with red eyes and a thick tail is one of the largest lizards in the Caribbean. The Cuban iguana is primarily herbivorous; 95% of its diet consists of the leaves, flowers and fruits from as many as 30 plant species, including the seaside rock bush and various grasses. However, Cuban iguanas occasionally consume animal matter, and individuals have been observed eating the dead flesh of birds, fish and crabs. The researchers wrote that quite a few people on Isla Magueyes could have caused this incident. The Cuban iguana is distributed throughout the rocky southern coastal areas of mainland Cuba and its surrounding islands with a wild population booming on Isla Magueyes, Puerto Rico. It is also found on the Cayman Islands of Little Cayman and Cayman Brac, where a separate subspecies occurs. Females guard their nest sites and often nest in sites half destroyed by Cuban crocodiles. To avoid the attack from them, the Cuban iguana often makes its home within or near prickly-pear cacti (仙人掌).In general the species is in decline, more quickly on the mainland than on the outlying islands. One of the reasons for their decline is habitat destruction caused by the over consuming of farm animals, housing development, and the building of tourist resorts on the beaches where the animals prefer to build their nests. Although the wild population is in decline, the numbers of iguanas have been sharply increased as a result of captive-breeding (圈养)and other conservation programs.8、The underlined word "herbivorous" (Paragraph 2)probably means . A.dangerous B.gentleC.plant-eating D.flesh-eating9、Why does the Cuban iguana build its nest near prickly-pear cacti?A.To keep itself cool.B.To get the food easily.C.To stay away from people.D.To avoid crocodiles' attack.10、How many reasons are mentioned for the habitat destruction?A.Two. B.Three. C.Four. D.Five.11、What's the author's purpose of writing the text?A.To give us a brief introduction to the Cuban iguana.B.To show he is concerned about the Cuban iguana.C.To explain reasons for the Cuban iguana's decline.D.To draw people's attention to the endangered Cuban iguana. My 16-year-old son, Anton, had gone to the local swimming hole. Most of the kids swim there, and there are plenty of rocks for them to use as safe harbors, so I had no fears for his safety. Still, the firefighter's first words "You need to come up here to the Stillwater River" made me catch my breath, and his follow-up w ords gave me relief: “ Your son is OK. ”When I got to the river, I immediately saw the firetruck, ambulance and Anton, wrapped with a towel about his shoulders, sitting quietly on a low platform of the fire engine.I hurried over to him. "You OK?" I asked.“Yeah,” was all he said. But my eyes begged for an explanation, I didn't get it from my son, however, who tends to play his cards close to his vest. The story was this: A woman was being swept under water. Hearing the cries, Anton and his friend Tyler, without hesitation, swam out to her, and brought her safely to shore. In an age in which the word "hero" is broadcast with abandon and seemingly applied to anyone who make it through the day, I realized the real thing in my son. The teens are stubborn and self-centred, but that didn't mean they have no desire to do good.Still shocked by my son's daring, I drove him home. Along the way, I tried to dig out somemore information from him, but he had precious little to say. The only words he said were,试卷第6页,共12页“What's for supper?”I spent some time alone that evening, thinking about the tragedy that might have been. The following ideas should get you started. All of London's major museums are free, but most offer some special exhibitions for a fee. My favorite is the Museum of London where you can learn the history of London from Roman times to today. And I love the Geffrye Museum which shows English domestic interiors and helps bring to life what it was really like to live in London.I regularly hear people tell me the Queen Mary's Rose Gardens in Regent's Park is their favorite spot in London, and who am I to argue? I would also recommend St. James's Park as it offers one of the best views of Buckingham Palace. Hyde Park is enormous and Kensington Gardens nearby includes the ever popular Diana Memorial Playground and the Peter Pan Statue. No visit to London is complete without seeing this military tradition. The Queen's Guard in London changes in the Forecourt inside the gates of Buckingham Palace at 11.30am every day in the summer and every other day in the winter. Get there early and view the spectacle from outside the front gates. Trafalgar Square is one of Britain's greatest visitor attractions and was designed by John Nash in the 1820s and constructed in the 1830s. This iconic square has many sights to see including Nelson's Column and the National Gallery. It is both a tourist attraction and the main focus for political demonstrations. Every December, Norway donates a marvelous Christmas tree, to thank Britain for liberation from the Nazis.1. Where can visitors find the Peter Pan Statue?A.in Regent's Park. The findings of the team, led by Zhao Liping with Shanghai Jiaotong University, Yin Aihua with the Guangdong province children's hospital, and Tang Huiru with Chinese Academy of Sciences, have been published on EBioMedicine, a renowned medical journal co-sponsored by Cell and The Lancet in July. The team identified bacterial genomes specifically for producing obesity-related metabolites (代谢物), and said an improved gut microbiota can significantly help to treat genetic obesity such as Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS).Beginning in childhood, PWS affected kids develop an insatiable appetite, leading to chronic overeating and obesity. The scientists used a diet therapy with beneficial gut bacteria on trial patients and found considerablediminishedappetite, weight loss and improved health conditions on the patients. The paper concluded dysbiosis (失调)of gut microbiota is highly related with both genetic and simple obesity in children, implicating dietary modulation of gut microbiota a potentially effective treatment method.4.Which of the following factors contributes to child obesity?A.dietary modulation of gut microbiotaB.beneficial gut bacteriaC.an improved gut microbiotaD.dysbiosis of gut microbiota5.Which can replace the underlined word “diminished”?A.unsatisfied B.increasedC.decreased D.good6.Where is the passage extracted?A.Medicine book B.Science bookC.Doctor’s instructions D.News report7.Which might be the best title for the passage?A.Chinese scientists discover treatment to child obesity.B.The reasons for genetic obesity in children has been found.C.Obesity-related research has been done by Chinese scientists.D.An effective treatment to obesity has been found.Getting rid of dirt, in the opinion of most people, is a good thing However, there is nothing fixed about attitudes to dirt.In the early 16th century, people thought that dirt on the skin was a means to block out disease, as medical opinion had it that washing off dirt with hot water could open up the skin and let ills in. A particular danger was thought to lie in public baths. By 1538, the French king had closed the bath houses in his kingdom. So did the king of England in 1546. Thus began a long time when the rich and the poor in Europe lived with dirt in a friendly way. Henry IV, king of France, was famously dirty. Upon learning that a nobleman had taken a bath, the king ordered that, to avoid the attack of disease, the nobleman should not go out.Though the belief in the merit(优点) of dirt was long-lived, dirt has no longer been regarded as a nice neighbor ever since the 18th century. Scientifically speaking, cleaning away dirt is good to health. Clean water supply and hand washing are practical means of preventing disease. Yet, it seems that standards of cleanliness have moved beyond science since World War II. Advertisements repeatedly sell the idea: clothes need to be whiter than white, cloths ever softer, surfaces to shine. Has the hate for dirt, however, gone too far?Attitudes to dirt still differ hugely nowadays. Many first-time parents nervously try to warn their children off touching dirt, which might be responsible for the spread of disease. On the contrary, Mary Ruebush, an American immunologist(免疫学家), encourages children to playin the dirt to build up a strong immune system. And the latter position is gaining some ground. 8.The kings of France and England in the 16th century closed bath houses because . A.they lived healthily in a dirty environmentB.they thought bath houses were too dirty to stay inC.they considered bathing as cause of skin diseaseD.They believed disease could be spread in public baths9.Which of the following best describes Henry IV’s attitude to bathing?A.Curious B.Afraid C.Approving D.Uninterested 10.How does the passage mainly develop?A.By following the order of time. B.By making comparison.C.By providing examples D.By following the order of importance. 11.What is the author’s purpose in writing the passages?A.To call attention to the danger of dirt.B.To introduce the history of dirt.C.To present the change of views on dirt.D.To stress the role of dirt.Welcome to your future life! You get up in the morning and look into the mirror. That’s the finding of a study of Dutch men in which deaths from heart disease were more than 50 percent lower among those who consumed at least an ounce of salt water fish per day compared to those who never ate fish. The Dutch research is one of three human studies that give strong scientific support to the long held belief that eating fish can provide health benefits, particularly to the heart.Heart disease is the number-one killer in the United States, with more than 550,000 deaths occurring from heart attacks each year. But researchers previously have noticed that the incidence (发生率)of heart disease is lower in cultures that consume more fish than Americans do. There are fewer heart disease deaths, for example, among the Eskimos of Greenland, who consume about 14 ounces of fish a day, and among the Japanese, whose daily fish consumption averages more than 3 ounces. For 20 years, the Dutch study followed 852 middle-aged men, 20 percent of whom ate no fish.At the start of the study, average fish consumption was about two-thirds of an ounce each day, with more men eating lean fish than fatty fish.During the next two decades, 78 of the men died from heart disease. The fewest deaths were among the group who regularly ate fish, even at levels far lower than those of the Japanese or Eskimos. This relationship was true regardless of other factors such as age, high blood pressure, or blood cholesterol(胆固醇)levels. 48.The passage is mainly about ________.A.the high incidence of heart disease in some countriesB.the changes in people’s dietC.the effect of fish eating on people’s healthD.the daily fish consumption of people in different cultures49.We can infer from the passage that there are fewer heart disease deaths ________.A.in the countries with high consumption of fishB.in highly-developed countriesC.in countries of the yellow-skin raceD.in the countries with good production of fish50.The phrase “this relationship” in paragraph 6 refers to t he connection between ________ and the incidence of heart disease.A.the amount of fish eaten B.regular fish-eatingC.the kind of fish eaten D.people of different areas第二节:(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余项。

APeople in the western state of California who are in the United States illegally can now request a driver's license. The law went into effect on January l. California is not the first American state with such a law, but it has the largest number of illegal immigrants. More than a million people began to request licenses shortly after the new state law went into effect. Among them was Christian Alvarado. Mr. Alvarado entered the United States from El Salvador eight years ago without perm ission from the U.S. government. Some call such people "illegal immigrants." Others call them "undocumented immigrants".Mr. Alvarado thinks it so exciting, for he has been waiting for the license for a long time. But some are worried that their personal information will be used to find them and deport them. Armando Botello is a spokesman for the California Department of Motor Vehicles, or DMV. He says people should not be afraid, for such information will not be shared. The new licenses are the same as licenses given to citizens except that they have the words "Federal Limits Apply". That means the license cannot be used to travel on an airplane or enter a federal building. Ana Garcia, working at the Central American Resource Center, says someillegal immigrants fear those words will be used to abuse them. Civil rights groups say the police and others will not.Dan Schnur, a political scientist at the University of Southern California, said that the main argument against the new law is that it rewards illegal behavior. But Professor Schnur argued that young, white Americans generally support immigration reform, including giving driver's licenses to illegal immigrants"It's simply because they grew up in a much more multicultural society than their parents or their grandparents did." Professor Schnur says he believes the changes in beliefs about illegal immigrants that have taken place in California will spread throughout the United States.21. He is the lead writer of a research paper describing the effects of cocoa flavones on brain activity. His study involved 37 volunteers aged between 50 and 69. Researchers gave them a high-level flavones drink made from cocoa beans or a low-level flavones drink. For a period of three months, some subjects got 900 milligrams of flavones a day. The others got 10 milligrams of flavones each day. Brain imaging and memory tests were given to each study subject before and after the study. Dr. Small says that the subjects who had the high-level flavones drink showed much improvement on memory tests. The researchers warn that more work is needed to be done because this study was performed only on a small group. Dr. Joann Manson is the lead researcher of a four-year study involving 18,000 adults. This study will use flavones capsules(胶囊). The study subjects will be divided into two groups and will take two pills per day. The capsules used will all look the same. But one group's capsules will contain flavones, while the other group will take capsules made of an inactive substance, or placeboDr. Manson says it's not necessary for people to start eating more chocolate, because 3 persons would have to eat a huge amount of chocolate to get the same level of flavones given to the rest subjects. He adds many manufacturers have planned to remove the flavones from their chocolate products. Similarly, Dr. Manson says a cocoa-based flavones extract(提取)may be developed in the future But he says that more studies are needed to see how much flavones is good for our health.28. What was done to the subjects after Dr. Small's study?A. They were asked to take a high-level flavones drink.B. They were given capsules containing flavones.C. They were given brain imaging and memory tests.D. They were asked to take two pills of flavones capsules per day.29. What's the similarity of the two experiments?A. Both use high-level flavones capsules.B. The number of the subjects is the same.C. Drinks a nd placebos are used in both experiments.D. The subjects are divided into two groups in both experiments.30. Why will Dr. Manson carry out the four-year study?A. To prove the first experiment is wrong.B. To carry out the experiment further.C. To test how much flavones can improve our memory.D. To show eating chocolate is better to improve memory.31. What can we learn from the last paragraph?A It's not necessary for us to eat chocolate.B The more we eat flavones, the better our health will be.C. In the future we can ge t flavones without eating chocolate.D. It's easy for people t o get the same level of flavones given to the test subjects.DAll you have is what you brin g with youI've always felt a need to be prepared for whatever situation I've found myself in.My mother once took me to a store when I was seven years old. She and I got to the checkout counter, and she realized she had forgotten a couple of things on her shopping list. She left me with the cart and ran off to get what she needed."I'll be right back." she said. She was gone just a few minutes, but in that time, I had loaded all the things on the belt and everything was rung up. I was left staring at the cashier, who was staring at me." Do you have money for me, son?" she said. "I'll need to be paid."I didn't realize she was just trying to amuse herself. So I stood there, ashamed and embarrassed.By the time my mom returned, I was angry. "You left me here with no money! This lady asked me for the money, and I had nothing to give her!"Now that I'm an adult, you'll never catch me with less than $200 in my wallet. I want to be prepared in case I need it.I've alw ays admired people who are over-prepared. In college, I had a classmate named Norman. One day he was giving a presentation on an overhead projector (投影仪) and in the middle of his talk, the light bulb(灯泡)on the projector blew out. We would have to wait ten minutes until someone found a new' projector."It's Okay." he announced. "There's nothing to worry about."We watched him walk over to his bag and pull something out. He had brought along a spare bulb for the Overhead projector. Who could even think of that?I often told my students, "When you go into the wilderness, the only thing you can depend on is what you take with you." And essentially, the wilderness is anywhere but your home or office. So take money. Pack a light bulb. Be prepared.32. Why did the cashier ask a seven-year-old boy to pay for the purchases'?A. Why was the boy angry with his mother?A. His mother left him alone.B. He lost face in front of the cashier.C. His mother forgot to buy something.D. He had just quarreled with the cashier.34. Why did Norman bring a spare bulb with him?A. He was always well-prepared.B. His presentation was about bulbs.C. He knew the classroom equipment was of poor quality.D. He predicted the bulb on the projector would blow out.35. What do the two stories tell us?A. Accidents happen almost every day.B. Money is the key that opens all doors.C. In fair weather, prepare for a rainy day.D. Chances favor those who are well-prepared.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

AMy 16-year-old son, Anton, had gone to the local swimming hole. Most of the kids swim there, and there are plenty of rocks for them to use as safe harbors, so I had no fears for his safety.Still, the firefighter's first words "You need to come up here to the Stillwater River" made me catch my breath, and his follow-up words gave me relief:“ Your son is OK.”When I got to the river, I immediately saw the firetruck, ambulance and Anton, wrapped with a towel about his shoulders, sitting quietly on a low platform of the fire engine.I hurried over to him. "You OK?" I asked.”Yeah," was all he said. But my eyes begged for an explanation, I didn't get it from my son, however, who tends to play his cards close to his vest. The story was this:A woman was being swept under water. Along the way, I tried to dig out some more information from him, but he had precious little to say. The only words he said were, “What's for supper?"I spent some time alone that evening, thinking about the tragedy that might have been. The next morning, when Anton got up, I half expected him to tell me the story. But all he did was toast some bread, pull himself together, and head for the door to start a new day. Watching from the window, I was reminded that still water often runs deep.21. Why did the mother allow her son to swim there?A. He was an excellent swimmer.B. The water of the river is shallow.C. What might be the best title for the passage?A. My Son, My HeroB. Anton, A Silent BoyC. A Good DeedD. A Proud MotherBThe Cuban iguana is a species of lizard(蜥蜴) of the iguana family. To avoid the attack from them, the Cuban iguana often makes its home within or near prickly-pear cacti(仙人掌).In general the species is in decline, more quickly on the mainland than on the outlying islands. One of the reasons for their decline is habitat destruction caused by the over consuming of farm animals, housing development, and the building of tourist resorts on the beaches where the animals prefer to build their nests. Although the wild population is indecline, the numbers of iguanas have been sharply increased as a result of captive-breeding (圈养)and other conservation programs.25. Although e-cigarettes contain the drug nicotine like cigarettes, they do not use tobacco and you do not light them. They are powered by battery. However, if e-cigarettes are so safe, why has the United States Center for Disease Control (CDC)seen an increase in telephone calls about e-cigarette poisonings? The answer is children. Most of the calls are from people worried about children who have played with the devices. In the period of one month this year, the Center said 215 people called the Center with e-cigarette concerns. More than half of these calls were for children aged five and younger. The devices had made them sick.Tim McAfee is director of the Center's Office on Smoking and Health. He says the problem is regulation, meaning, the U. S. federal government does not control e-cigarettes even though they contain liquid nicotine. Mr. McAfee adds that liquid nicotine is a well-known danger. Mr. McAfee explains that nicotine poisoning happens when it gets into the skin, gets into the eyes or is swallowed. It can cause stomach pain or a sense of unbalance. And too much nicotine can kill.Tim McAfee says e-cigarettes do not create the level of risk to people that tobacco products do. He notes that almost 500,000 Americans die each year from cigarettes. "So, cigarettes are the winner in that contest." E-cigarettes d o not contain hundreds of harmful chemicals that are found in real cigarettes. So, the U. In other words, he fears that for young people fake e-cigarettes could be a "gateway" to the real thing.32. What do the producers think of e-cigarettes?A. Dangerous.B. Expensive.C. Safer.D. Cheaper.33. Why did the CDC receive so many calls about e-cigarettes?A. Parents feared that their children might get poisoned.B. Parents found the device useless in quitting smoking.C. Children swallowed the liquid nicotine from the device.D.
