弗里曼将象征艺术手法运用得淋漓尽致,女性思想觉醒就是要走出婚姻的牢笼,奋起反抗并寻求自我。

一、标题的象征主义效果A New England Nun让人眼前一亮,我们猜测露易莎不同常人,修女必须摒弃性欲和社交,追随一种相对高道德的生活方式,露易萨不是修女,而是新英格兰传统女性,为“老处女”。

本研究主要从系统功能语言学中的及物性分析来研究艾米莉的诗歌,分析研究她在当时的社会背景和文化语境下,是如何运用各种小句和各种不同的动词过程来表达外部客观世界和她的思想、信仰和情感等,旨在为更好地欣赏艾米莉的诗歌提供借鉴意义。

二理论基础根据韩礼德的语域理论,“文化语境决定着整个语言系统,即决定着语言使用者在这一文化语境中能够表达的语言。

而情景语境则决定着语言使用者在某一具体语境中的语言”。

因此,在一个具体语境中,讲话者究竟能用什么样的语言取决于语境中的各种因素。

韩礼德把这些语境因素归纳为三个组成部分:语场(field)、语旨(tenor)和语式(mode),他们分别对应于语言的三个功能,即概念功能、人际功能和语篇功能。

外边院里,树影也变换了模样。

老远不知什么地方牛声哞哞,夹上一个小铃在叮当作响;不时一辆农家大车晃晃悠悠过去了,扬起一片尘土;有些身穿蓝上衣的庄稼汉,肩扛铁锹,拖着沉重的步子走了过去;小股小股的苍蝇迎面拥来,在和风里不住上下起舞。

万物好象就因为要平静下来,才稍稍振作一番——正是一个先兆,预示着夜晚来临,万籁俱寂。

白昼这一番不紧不慢的折腾也传到了露易萨·艾丽丝身上。

她本来一下午都坐在起居室的窗前,安安静静做着针线。

这时候她把银针仔细别在针线活上,东西叠得方方正正,跟顶针、丝线、剪子一起放到一只筐里。

她这一生,这些妇女用的小搭配,记得从来没有一件放错过地方;东西用久了,常年不离手,成了她身上的一部分了。

露易萨拦腰系上一条绿围裙,拿出一顶扁平的草帽,上面还扎着一根绿丝带。

接着她端起一个蓝色的小瓦钵走进园子里,去摘点红醋栗烧茶喝。

摘完红醋栗她坐在后门的台阶上,把秸梗去掉,拿围裙小心兜着,过后扔进鸡笼。

她仔细看了看台阶边上的小草,怕有秸梗落在草上。

露易萨一举一动从容文静,她烧茶就烧了好久;不过茶好了一摆出来,那份讲究就象是她在请客,而来客正是她本人。

小方桌端端正正摆在厨房中央,上铺一块浆过的桌布,四边的镶花图案斑斓夺目。

露易萨在茶盘上盖了一块织锦餐巾,盘里摆好了一只盛满茶匙的雕花玻璃杯,一个银制的奶油罐,一个瓷糖缸,一只带茶托的粉色瓷茶杯。

露易萨是天天用瓷器的——左邻右舍谁家也不这样。

就为这事大家都在窃窃私议。

人家每天上桌的是常见的陶器,上等瓷器都是成套的摆设在客厅的壁橱里,何况她露易萨·艾丽丝一点也不比别人富裕,不比别人有教养。

可她还老是用的瓷器。

她晚饭吃的是满满一玻璃碟子的糖渍红醋栗,一盘小蒸糕,一块浅色的发面饼。

还有一两片生菜,切得煞是细巧。

露易萨非常爱吃生菜,她自己在小小的园子里种了一些,出色极了。

她吃得可香了。

但是,看那细嚼慢咽的斯文劲儿,简直很难相信那顿饭菜会被她吃光。

喝完茶,她盛了一盘烤得正到火候的薄玉米饼,端到屋外后院去。

“西塞!”她喊了起来。

“西塞!西塞!”一声急窜,铁链啷当一响,只见花草深处,一间小棚隐约可辨,门口出现一只黄白相间的大狗。

露易萨拍了拍它,把玉米饼给了它。

接着她又回得屋来涮洗茶具,把瓷器一点点擦得锃亮。

暮色已深,蛙鸣四起,从敞开的窗口飘了进来,尖声尖气噪得出奇,不时还穿插一只雨蛙刺耳的长吟。

露易萨解下绿方格的围裙,露出一条短围裙,白底上套着桃红的印花。

她掌上灯,又坐下来拿起针线。

约莫过了半个钟头,裘·戴格特来了。

她听到他沉重的脚步踏在走道上,起身解下白底红花的围裙。

里边还有一条——白色的布料,兜底是窄窄的一道细纺滚边;这是露易萨待客的围裙。

她有条不紊的匆匆叠起那条白底红花的围裙,刚把它放进饭桌的抽屉,门就开了,进来了裘·戴格特。

他象是把整个房间都占满了。

南面窗口的绿色鸟笼里,一只小小的黄金丝雀本来睡得好好的,这下闹醒了,瞎扑腾起来,小小的黄翅膀不住拍打着铁丝网。

每逢裘·戴格特进屋,它总是这样。

“晚上好,”露易萨说。

她伸出手去,亲切里带着几分庄重。

“晚上好,露易萨,”来人答话,声音响亮。

她拿了一把椅子给他,两人面对面坐下,中间隔张饭桌。

他坐得笔直,沉重的双脚端端正正朝前放着,拘谨而又不失轻松,四下里张望了一眼。

她彬彬有礼的挺身坐着,纤细的两手搭在白布围裙上。

“天真爽啊,”戴格特说。

“可不是,真爽,”露易萨轻轻应了一声。

“你一直在割草吗?”她稍后又问。

“嗯,我割了一整天了,就那块十英亩的地。

干得可热了。

”“那敢情的。

”“嗯,顶着日头干,可热了。

”“你母亲今天可好?”“嗯,母亲满好。

”“眼下想必莉莉·戴尔陪着她吧?”戴格特脸红了。

“嗯,是她陪着,”他慢声慢气答着腔。

他不怎么年轻了,可是宽阔的脸上还露出几分稚气。

露易萨没有他那么大,一张脸比起他来又白又细嫩,可是给人的印象倒是她大。

“她想必给你母亲帮不少忙,”她又说。

“我看也是;要不是有她,母亲都不知怎么过了呢,”戴格特说,热切里有点不好意思。

“她看样子真是个能干姑娘。

再说人长得也俊,”露易萨说。

“嗯,她长得是满俏的。

”戴格特说着说着翻起桌上的书来。

有一本是四四方方的红皮纪念册,还有一本“少女赠书”,本来归露易萨的母亲所有。

他拿起一本又一本,把书打开;过后又放下,纪念册摞在“赠书”上。

露易萨不住盯着书本,有点不自在。

她终于站起身来,把两书的位置调换一下,纪念册放到了下边。

原来一直是这么个摆法。

戴格特轻轻憨笑了一声。

“管它哪本书放顶上,不都一样吗?”他说。

露易萨望着他笑了笑,表示不赞成。

“我一向这么放的,”她咕了一句。

“你真是事事都要强,”戴格特说,又想笑出声来。

他宽阔的脸涨得通红。

他又呆了约莫一个时辰,这才起身离去。

他正往外走,叫一块小地毯绊了一下;他一心想站稳身子,又碰倒了露易萨放在桌上的针线筐,把它打翻在地。

他看看露易萨,又看看滚了一地的线轴;他手忙脚乱的纵身去捡,叫露易萨拦住了。

“不要紧,”她说,“你走了我捡就是。

”她这话说得生硬了些。

也许是她自己有点心烦,要不就是戴格特的紧张影响了她,所以她尽管要他放心,听起来总显得勉强。

裘·戴格特出得屋来,倒吸了一口傍晚的清新空气,又叹了一声,那心情活象一头清白无辜、好心好意的熊才从瓷器店里出来。

至于露易萨,她那心情,又活象是熊从瓷器店里走后那个受够了罪的好心店主。

她系上围裙,先是桃红的那条,再套上绿的。

她把撒满一地的宝物一一捡起,重新放进针线筐,再把小地毯铺平。

“我早料到了。

这要是叫戴格特知道了,他该越发不知所措,越发拘谨了,尽管他的忠诚丝毫不为所动。

他一个星期来两回,看看露易萨·艾丽丝;每回坐在她这间赏心悦目的雅室里,他都觉得象是置身于一圈用花饰编扎的篱笆之中。

他不敢动弹,生怕笨手笨脚的一下子捅穿了小巧玲珑的篱网,而且他感到露易萨一直在顾虑重重的提防着,唯恐他生事。

无奈花饰也好,露易萨也好,都要求他不得不做到毕恭毕敬,坚韧忠诚。

再过一个月,他们就要结婚了,而在这以前的求婚倒很奇特,竟拖了十五个年头。

这十五年,有十四年他俩没有见过一次面,彼此也很少通信。

这些年裘一直在澳大利亚;他去本来是图的发家致富,图不到手他就呆着没走。

哪怕是呆上五十年才能娶上露易萨,他也要呆下去,不是老态龙钟的回得家来娶她,就是一辈子干脆回不了家,娶不成她。

不过这十四年发了家了;整整十四年,女的一直在耐心等他,毫不犹疑,如今他回来娶她了。

当初订婚不久,他就告诉露易萨,他决心出去闯闯,另辟生路,等确保过得丰衣足食,他俩再结婚不迟。

露易萨听从了他,依然是平素那般恬静,即使临到情人启程远行,前途未卜,她也毫不动容。

裘呢,别看他决心坚定不移,精神也为之一振,临走不免有点伤感。

倒是露易萨半红着脸吻了他,道了别。

“走不长的,”伤心的裘说过,嗓子都沙哑了;可是这一走就是十四年。

这段时间有不少变故。

露易萨的母亲和哥哥都死了,就剩她孤零零一个人活在世上。

但是最要紧的是——一个微妙的情况,他俩都太单纯,无法理解——露易萨踏上了一条小径,尽管上有晴空如洗,脚下是坦途,但是这路太直太正,只有走到她的墓地才看得到尽头;这路又太窄,她身边容不下旁人同行。

裘·戴格特回到家来(他没有通知她要来),露易萨先是感到惶惶不安,尽管她不肯对自己承认这一点;裘则是从来没有想到。

十五年前她爱上了他——至少她自以为如此。

正是在那个时候,她一味温顺的默默听从少女的天性所驱,把日后的婚姻看作生活的一个入情入理的特征,一个值得向往的前景。

她静心恭听母亲对这个问题的见解。

她母亲头脑冷静,生性平和可亲,非同一般,裘·戴格特找上门来的时候,她对女儿一番谈吐很有见地,于是露易萨毫不犹豫,答应了他。

他是她生平第一个情人。

她这些年一直对他忠贞不渝。

她从来没有想到过另嫁别人。

她的生活,尤其是后来这七年日子,一直过得非常安宁,心情舒畅。

情人不在身边,她从来没有感到不满或心烦。

她始终指望他回家完婚,认为这是出于常情的必然归宿。

可是,她又没法不把这门婚事老往后捱,这样遥遥无期,简直无异于捱过今世,只待来生了。

裘来了,本来她一直在盼他来,盼了十四年就等结婚,可如今她又觉得意外,吃了一惊,好象从来不曾想过这事。

裘后来也惶惶不安了。

他细看看露易萨,当初的倾慕之情油然而生。

她并没有多大变化。

她旧日的风韵还在,依然是温文尔雅,而且在他看来,就连妩媚动人也丝毫不减当年。

至于他自己,也算尽到了本份,一门心思已经不用在发家致富上了。

他两耳只听得风声呼啸,奏出了往日的绵绵情意,依然那般嘹亮,那般温存。

风声里他一向只听惯了一支曲子,名字就叫露易萨,而且历久不衰,这是他长期以来笃信不疑的。

但是现在他终于觉得,那支曲调虽然音犹在耳,曲名却换了一个。

倒是在露易萨听来,这阵风声始终不过是低声细语而已,如今已经消静下来,无声无息了。

她似想非想的注意聆听了一小会儿,随后悄悄转过身去,动手做起结婚穿的礼服来。

裘已经把住宅里边大改了一番,气派很是豪华。

房基地是家传的;新婚夫妇就在这里住家,因为裘不能撇下母亲不管,而他母亲又不肯离开老家。

所以露易萨只好舍了娘家。

她每天早上起得床来,在自己那些整整洁洁的闺秀家私当中穿来穿去,总觉得象是对着贴心朋友的一张张面孔看上最后一眼。

不错,她多少可以带着点走,可是时过境迁,这些东西也就改头换面,简直认不出来了。

再说,她孑然一身,快活自在,过起来也自有一番独到的特色,怕是通通都非得舍弃不可了。

眼下的家务优闲雅致而又可有可无,将来可就艰苦多了,恐怕都要堆在她身上。

一大幢房子放在那儿,要人照管吧;来了客人,要人接待吧;裘的老母亲又是苛刻又是衰弱,要人伺候吧;而她要是雇上不止一个佣人,又违背历来勤俭持家的乡俗。

露易萨有一个小小的蒸馏器,夏天里她常常兴致勃勃的忙着采撷玫瑰、薄荷、留兰香,从中提取芬芳扑鼻的香精。

早晚她的蒸馏器也得埋进土里。

她已经贮藏了不少香精,往后就是兴致还在,也没有时间提取了。

要不裘的母亲又该嫌傻了,她对这事的看法早就有所流露。

露易萨特别喜欢把布块缝连上,倒不一定回回都要用上,只因为她有这份兴致,乐在其中。

她不止一回拆了缝口又连上,就为图个高兴,自己不肯承认罢了。

风和日丽的日子,下午时间又长,她坐在窗前,手捧精致的织品,来回轻挑银针,身心浑然一片安宁。

可是今后就难得碰上这种傻里傻气的惬意事了。
