When Dr. Henderson was assigning (指定) project mates for his psychology class, I secretly hoped that he would pair me with my best friend or at least a classmate I could have some fun with. Above all, I hoped he wouldn’t assign me to work with the fiercely competitive and extremely serious fellow who always wore dark clothes and apparently had a personality to match. As fate (命运) would have it, Dr. Henderson very deliberately matched everyone in class and announced that I would be working with the one person in class I wanted to avoid.I went up to my new teammate and introduced myself. He looked at me as though I weren’t there. I felt he treated me as though I would hold him back and probably make him fail to get an A in the course. He wasn’t mean or abusive; he just gave me the impression that he could do whatever project we dreamed up better if he did it alone.Needless to say, I didn’t look forward to an entire term of being brushed off, but I tried to make the best of it and didn’t say anything for fear that I would make things worse. The project required each team to develop a hypothesis (假说), set up an experiment to test the hypothesis, do the statistical analysis and present the findings. Whatever grade the team received would be shared by both students. When my teammate and I met to discuss our project, I was uneasy. Here was this challenging student who had a reputation for single-mindedness and good grades — the exact opposite of me. I actually wanted to drop the class at one point, but stopped short because I didn’t want to give him the satisfaction of my chickening out. I decided to stick to it no matter what. After long discussions we somehow agreed to do a study on the psychological well-being of teenagers. I wasn’t sure what it meant exactly, but at least we had a topic.

A Vacation with My MotherI had an interesting childhood. It was filled with surprise and amusement, all because of my mother---loving, sweet, yet absent-minded and forgetful. One strange family trip we took when I was elven tells a lot about her.My two sets of grandparents lived in Colorado and North Dakota, and my parents decided to spend a few weeks driving to those states and seeing all the sights along the way. As the first day of our trip approached, David, my eight-year-old brother, and I unwillingly said good-bye to all of our friends. Who knew if we would ever see them again Finally, the moment of our departure arrived, and we loaded suitcases, books, games, camping equipment, and a tent into the car and bravely drove off. We bravely drove off again two hours later after we’d returned home to get the purse and traveler’s checks Mom had forgotten.David and I were always a little nervous when using gas station bathroom if Mom was driving while Dad slept: “You stand outside the door and play lookout (放哨) while I go, and I’ll stand outside the door and play lookout while you go.” I had terrible pictures in my mind: “Honey, where are the kids”“What! Oh, Gosh… I thought they were being awfully quite.” We were never actually left in a strange city, but we were not about to take any chance. On the fourth or fifth night, we had trouble finding a hotel with a vacancy. After driving in vain for some time, Mom suddenly got a great idea: Why didn’t we find a house with a likely-looking backyard and ask if we could set up tent there David and I became nervous. To our great relief, Dad turned down the idea. Mom never could understand our objections(反对). If a strange family showed up on her front doorstep, Mom would have been delighted. She thinks everyone in the world is as nice as she is. We finally found a vacancy in the next town.

浙江高考英语读后续写第二节读后续写(满分25分)阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事“I’m going to miss you so much, Poppy,” said the tall, thin teenager. He bent down to hug his old friend goodbye. He stood up, hugged his parents, and smiled, trying not to let his emotions (情绪)get the better of him.His parents were not quite able to keep theirs under control. They had driven their son several hours out of town to the university where he would soon be living and studying. It was time to say goodbye for now at least. The family hugged and smiled through misty eyes and then laughed. The boy lifted the last bag onto his shoulder, and flashed a bright smile. “I guess this is it,” he said. “I’ll see you back home in a month, okay” His parents nodded, and they watched as he walked out of sight into the crowds of hundreds of students and parents. The boy’s mother turned to the dog, “Okay, Poppy, time to go back home.”The house seemed quiet as a tomb without the boy living there. All that week, Poppy didn’t seem interested in her dinner, her favorite toy, or even in her daily walk. Her owners were sad too, but they knew their son would be back to visit. Poppy didn’t.&They offered the dog some of her favorite peanut butter treats. They even let her sit on the sofa, but the old girl just wasn’t her usual cheerful self. Her owners started to get worried. “What should we do to cheer Poppy up” asked Dad. “We’ve tried everything.”“I have an idea, but it might be a little crazy,”smiled Mom. “Without anybody left in the house but us, this pla ce could use a bit of fun. As the economy was in decline, some people in the town had lost their jobs……读后续写范文(一)Paragraph 1:When Mrs. Meredith heard of John’s idea, she thought it was a good one, too. A plan was made, and work was allocated within minutes. While Mrs. Meredith sought out the largest pan in her possession, the children went to find Bernard and tell him the idea. The little boy was so thankful that he was lost for words. Soon the Meredith household was filled with laughter. The aroma spread out for miles. Neighbors popped their heads out of their windows in search of its source. When the work was done, Bernard carefully sealed the paper bags and gathered them in a basket. Paragraph 2:With everything ready, Bernard started out on his new business. The shy boy hesitated upon reaching the first door, but the Meredith kids encouraged him with a “go for it” gesture. After a short gentle knock, the door opened and a friendly face emerged. The neighbor asked if she could buy a bag of the tempting snack. As they went down the street, more doors opened. Even the less privileged households offered to make fair trades with their extra food. The basket grew heavier with coins, foods, and other necessities, while Bernard’s steps became lighter with joy and relief. After that, Mrs. Meredith, together wither three children, paid another visit to the family, and told them about the popcorn plan. The family were deeply moved, especially Bernard who could sell popcorn to make money for his family. A few days later, the machine was delivered to Mrs. Meredith's doorstep. And it wasn't long before they got the hang of using the machine to make popcorn. With everything ready, Bernard started out on his new business. Although it was a hard time and things were tight for everybody, Bernard’s business worked out quite well. He carried the popcorn on his small bike, going from door to door to sell it. People were surprised to see such a little poorly-dressed boy selling popcorn at their doors, but eventually almost all of them would buy a bag or two. It is love that makes the world go around and Bernard felt it deep in his little heart.读后续写范文(三)When Mrs. Meredith heard of the idea, she thought it was a good one, too. So, she took her children on a visit to the family, with her largest pan and the bag of corn. There, the popcorn plan was introduced in detail by John, and the family, especiallythe adorable boy Bernard, were more than grateful for the timely help. With tears of gratitude and joy, Bernard thanked Mrs. Meredith, who gave him a hug. Then all of them got down to popping the corns. When inviting popcorn finally made its way to the table, the two families smiled happily before they went on to throw themselves into packaging the popcorn into paper bags. With everything ready, Bernard started out on his new business. He carried the popcorn on his small bike, going from one door to another. The first door he knocked at with trembling fingers was opened by an elderly woman. Seeing her friendly smile, Bernard found his nervousness completely gone. Holding up a bag of popcorn, he asked smilingly, “Would you like some sweet popcorn, Granny? It costs only 5 pennies.” The first deal was made smoothly and so did the next one and the ones after. Looking at the empty bike basket and thinking of all the loving people he had met, including the Merediths, Bernard was again overwhelmed by a mixture of gratitude and joy.。

(2020年7月浙江卷)One fall,my wife Elli and I had a single goal:to photograph polar bears. We were staying at a research camp outside “the polar bear capital of the world”-the town of Churchill in Manitoba,Canada.Taking pictures of polar bears is amazing but also dangerous. Polar bears-like all wild animals-should be photographed from a safe distance. When I'm face to face with a polar bear,I like it to be through a camera with a telephoto lens. But sometimes, that is easier said than done. This was one of those times. As Elli and I cooked dinner,a young male polar bear who was playing in a nearby lake sniffed, and smelled our garlic bread. The hungry bear followed his nose to our camp, which was surrounded by a high wire fence. He pulled and bit the wire. He stood on his back legs and pushed at the wooden fence posts.Terrified,Elli and I tried all the bear defense actions we knew. We yelled at the bear, hit pots hard, and fired blank shotgun shells into the air. Sometimes loud noises like these will scare bears off. Not this polar bear though-he just kept trying to tear down the fence with his massive paws(爪子).I radioed the camp manager for help.
