After a while, he began humming (哼) a song and we stopped to listen to him. He had only been out there for about 15 m inutes by this time and then he said, “If you are going to do something, do it right now or don’t do it at all.”“What are you talking about, Grandpa?” my friend asked. With a smile, Mr. Morton then tipped (倾斜) his bucket towards us and when we looked in we saw that his bucket only had in a small quantity of peas compared with the quarter-filled bucket that we had. As we looked closely, we also saw how clean his work was—all the little shells, leaves and other trash from the peas that were in our bucket we ren’t in his bucket. That’s when the depth of his words hit me; I realized that I was hearing wise words that meant something deeper than peas. After he finished talking, he started to lean back, but the chair he was in was really old so it tipped over, his legs flew up in the air and all his peas fell all over the ground getting as dirty as ours. We all burst out laughing at him. Mr. Morton has passed away, but his message is not lost; it is buried in my heart and now I try to do things—the right way or not do them at all.31. Which of the following words can best describe Mr. Morton?A. Kind and easy-going.B. Proud and careless.C. Honest and hard-working.D. Polite and generous.32. The author discovered that Mr. Morton’s bucket ______.A. was very clean and half-filled with peasB. had fewer peas but it was quite cleanC. had more peas but fewer shells and leavesD. was smaller but contained more clean peas33. What can we learn from Mr. Morton?A. When doing something, do it to the best of your ability.B. Seize every chance in your life or you will regret later.C. You can’t expect to do two things well at the same time.D. Better give up unless you know the right way to do a thing.BWhat will man be like in the future – in 5000 or even 50,000 years from now? We can only make guesses, of course, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is today, for man is slowly changing all the time.Let us take an obvious example. Man, even five hundred years ago, was shorter than he is today. Now, on average, men are about three inches taller. Five hundred years is a relatively short period of time, so we may assume that man will continue to grow taller. Again, in the modern world we use our brains a great deal. Even so, we still make use of only about 20% of the brain's capacity. As time goeson, however, we shall have to use our brains more and more, and eventually we shall need larger ones! This is likely to bring about a physical change too: the head, in particular the forehead, will grow larger.Nowadays our eyes are in constant use. In fact, we use them so much that very often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over a very long period of time it is likely that man's eyes will grow stronger. On the other hand, we tend to make less use of our arms and legs. These, as a result, are likely to grow weaker. At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive because they are used a great deal in modern life. But what about hair? This will probably disappear from the body altogether in course of time because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer. In the future, then, both sexes are likely to be bald.Perhaps all this gives the impression that future man will not be a very attractive creature to look at! This may well be true. All the same, in spite of all these changes, future man will still have a lot in common with us. He will still be a human being with thoughts and emotions similar to our own.34. The passage mainly tells us .A. man's life will be different in the futureB. what man will look like in the futureC. man is growing taller and uglier as time passesD. human's organs' functions will become weak35. The change in man's size of forehead will probably be because .A. he makes use only 20% of the brain's capacityB. his brain has grown larger over the past centuriesC. the other 80% of his brain will grow in due timeD. he will use his brain more and more as time goes on36. What will be true about a human being in the future?A. He will be hairless because hair is no longer useful.B. He will have smaller eyes and will wear better glasses.C. His fingers will grow weaker because he won't have to make use of them.D. He will think and feel in a different way.37. It is implied that .A. human beings will become less attractive in the future.B. less use of a bodily organ may lead to its degeneration(退化).C. human beings hope for a change in the future life.D. future life is always predictable.CThere are thousands of products of all colors and shapes in a supermarket , making you believe that they are worth a try . How ? Packaging (包装)is the silent but persuading salesman .There on the shelves, each bottle, can, box, and jar has been carefully designed and measured to speak to the inner self of the consumer(消费者), so that is buying not only a product but also his belief in life. Scientists have studied consumer behavior recently and found that the look of the package has a great effect on the “quality” of the product and on how well it sells, because “Consumers generally cannot tell between a product and its package. Many products are packages and many packages are products,” as Louis Cheskin, the first social scientist studying consumers’ feeling for packaging, noticed.Colors are one of the best tools in packaging. Studies of eye movement have shown that colors draw human attention quickly. Take V8 for example. For many years, the bright red color of tomatoes and carrots on the thin bottle makes you feel that it is very good for your body. And the word “green” today can keep food prices going up.Shapes are another attraction. Circles often suggest happiness and peacefulness, because thesesh apes are pleasing to both the eye and the heart. That’s why the round yellow M signs of McDonald’s are inviting to both young and old. This new consumer response(反应)to the colors and shapes of packages reminds producers and sellers that people buy to satisfy both body and soul.38. According to the passage, ______ seems to be able to persuade a consumer to buy the product.A. the pleasing color of the packageB. the special taste of the productC. the strange shape of the packageD. the belief in the product39. If a package or a product is round in shape, it can ________.A. bring excitement to the consumersB. attract the consumers’ attentionC. catch the eye movement of the consumersD. produce a happy and peaceful feeling40. “And the word ‘green’ today can keep food prices going up.” This sentence suggests that consumers today are ________.A. starting to notice the importance of new foodB. enjoying the beauty of nature more than beforeC. beginning to like green vegetablesD. paying more attention to their healthy41. It can be inferred from the passage that V8 is a kind of ________.A. vegetable dishB. healthy juiceC. iced drinkD. red vegetableDSince the first Earth Day in 1970, American has gotten a lot “greener” toward the environment. “We didn’t know at that time there even was an environment, let alone that there was a problem with it,” says Bruce Anderson, president of Earth Day USA.But what began as nothing important in public affairs has grown into a socialmovement .Business people, political leaders, university professors, and especially millions ofgrass-roots Americans are taking part in the movement. “The understanding has increased many, many times,” says Gaylord Nelson, the former governor from Wisconsin, who thought up the first. According to US government reports , emissions (排放)from cars and trucks have dropped from 10.3 million tons a year to 5.5 tons .The number of cities producing CO beyond the standard has been reduced from 40 to 9. Although serious problems still remains and need to be dealt with, the world is a safer and healthier place .A kind of “Green thinking” has become part of practices.Great improvement has been achieved .In 1988 there were only 600 recycling programs ,; today in 1995 there are about 6,600 .Advanced lights ,motors , and building designs have helped save a lot of energy and therefore prevented pollution .Twenty –five years ago , there were hardly any education programs for environment .Today , it’s hard to find a public school , university , or law school that does not have such a kind of program .” Until we do that, nothing else will change! ” say Bruce Anderson.42. According to Anderson, before 1970, Americans had little idea about ___A. the social movementB. recycling techniquesC. environmental problemsD. the importance of Earth Day43. Where does the support for environmental protection mainly come from?A. The grass –roots levelB. The business circleC. Government officialsD. University professors44. What have Americans achieved in environmental protection?A. They have cut car emissions to the lowestB. They have settled their environmental problemsC. They have lowered their CO levels in forty cities.D. They have reduced pollution through effective measures.45. What is especially important for environmental protection according to the last paragraph?A. EducationB. PlanningC. Green livingD.
