My Thinking about English Vocabulary Learning

As many people speak it as a second language, English is widely used throughout the word. So it is very clear that English is important for us, we should study it well. But now, some English learners have a common problem of vocabulary during their English learning process, they can't remember the English words. They just learn words by heart again and again. Memorizing in this way not only forget easily, but also spend large amount of time. After finishing the study of English Vocabulary Learning, I realize it is so helpful that it can help us find the effective way to memorize English vocabulary. Only though understanding some rules about vocabulary, can we gradually master the vocabulary of corresponding accumulation, and then reach the purpose of vocabulary.

The expansion of vocabulary in modern English depends chiefly on word formation. There are several rules accounting for us to memorize English vocabulary.

Firstly, affixation can help us to understand the derivatives. For affixation is generally defined as the formation of words by adding word-forming or derivational affixes to base. In this way, the new words will be derived from old or base forms. That is to say, if we can remember the old words and the affixes which in common use, we will easy to remember the derivatives. Maybe some

people will feel distressed how can we learn all of the affixes and put them into daily life use? Actually, there are some simple rules about affixes in the English Vocabulary Learning. According to the positions affixes occupy in words, affixation falls into two subcategories: prefixation and suffixation. as for the Prefixation it is formation of new words by adding prefixes to base. And it do not change the word-class of the base but only modify its meaning. You just need to remember the common rules about prefixation. You can see that a dis in non un etc are the negative prefixes. Just as disloyal, unearth and Injustice. Mal, mis, pseudo are the pejorative prefixes, such as maltreat, mistruct, pseudo science and so on. There are other rules : reversative prefixes, prefixes of degree, prefixes of orientation and attitude, locative prefixes, prefixes of time and order, number prefixes, conversion prefixes and miscellaneous prefixes. As for the suffixation, there are also some rules: rules about noun suffixes, adjective suffixes, adverb suffixes and verb suffixes. If you remember these rules about affixation, you can manage the derivatives. Secondly, compounding can help us enlarge our English vocabulary by combining two or more bases. Words formed in this way are called compounds. Although a compound is formed by many bases, every compound should express a single idea just as one word. So, if we combine the words we have been learned into a compound by using its rules, we will get more new worlds. And the most important thing is that it’s so easy for us to remember.
