Unit 5 ELIAS` STORYMy name is Elias.I am a poor black worker in South Africa. The time when I first met Nelson Mandela was a very difficult period of my life.I was twelve years old. It was in 1952 and Mandela was the black lawyer to whom I went for advice. He offered guidance to poor black people on their legal problems. He was generous with his time, for which I was grateful.I needed his help because I had very little education.I began school at six. The school where I studied for only two years was three kilometers away.I had to leave because my family could not continue to pay the school fees and the bus fare.I could not read or write well. After trying hard,I got a job in a gold mine. However, this was a time when one had got to havea passbook to live in Johannesburg.Sadly I did not have it because I was not born there, and I worried about whether I would become out of work. The day when Nelson Mandela helped me was one of my happiest. He told me how to get the correct papers so I could stay in Johannesburg.I became more hopeful about my future.I never forgot how kind Mandela was. When he organized the ANC Youth League, I joined it as soon as I could. He said:"The last thirty years have seen the greatest number of laws stopping our rights and progress, until today we have reached a stage where we have almost no rights at all.”It was the truth.Black people could not vote or choose their leaders. They could not get the jobs they wanted. The parts of town in which they had to live were decided by white people. The places outside the towns where they were sent to live were the poorest parts of South Africa. No one could grow food there .In fact as Nelson Mandela said:“…we were put into a position in which we had either to accept we were less important or fight the government. We chose to attack the laws.We first broke the law in a way which was peaceful; when this was not allowed…only then did we decide to answer violence with violence.……As a matter of fact, I do not like violence…but in 1963 I helped him blow up some government buildings. It was very dangerous because if I was caught I could be put in prison. But I was happy to help because I knew it would help us achieve our dream of making black and white people equal.Book 1 Unit 5△Nelson Mandela /'nelsn mæn'delə/ 纳尔逊·曼德拉(前南非共和国总统)quality /'kwɔləti/ n. 质量;品质;性质△warm-hearted /wɔ:m 'ha:tid/ adj. 热心肠的mean /mi:n/ adj. 吝啬的;自私的;卑鄙的active /'æktiv/ adj. 积极的;活跃的generous /'dʒenərəs/ adj. 慷慨的;大方的△easy-going /i:zi:'gəuiŋ/ adj. 随和的;温和宽容的self /self/ n. 自我;自身selfish /'selfiʃ/ adj. 自私的selfless /'selflis/ adj. 无私的;忘我的selflessly /'selflisli/ adv. 无私地;忘我地devote /di'vəut/ vt. I wanted to study for my degree but I was not allowed to do ter, Mr. Mandela all owed the prison guards to join us.He said they should not be stopped from studying for their degrees. They were not cl everer than me , but they did pass their exams. So I knew I could get a degree too. That made me feel good about myself. When I finished the four years in prison, I went to find a job.Since I was better educated, I got a job working in an of fice. However, the police found out and told my boss that I had been in prison for blowing up government buildings. 2021-2022学年高一英语必修一Unit 5 Listening and Talking原文LISTENNG PART 1As many countries speak English as a first language, there are many different kinds of English around the world: British English, American English, Australian English, and many others. Some English learners might ask, " Can English speakers from different countries all understand each other? " The answer is yes. People in these countries can usually understand each other with very few problems. There are differences in vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar, but those are usually not big problems. However those differences can cause confusion for non-native English speakers. For example, a student who has learnt British English might not be familiar with the different vocabulary that an American might use. By 2030, it will be 60 percent. With more people in cities, there is less space, and housing costs more. What can we do? Here’s an idea.Container HousingThe city of Amsterdam is using old shipping containers as housing for students and other people. The containers are small—30 square meters (three hundred twenty square feet)—but they are comfortable. There is space for a living area, bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom. These houses are also inexpensive: only a few thousand dollars to buy. Today, the containers are used around the world as homes and student dormitories, as well as shops, offices, and hotels.Tiny HousesIn the U.S., Jay Shafer makes tiny houses for people. The smallest is only 9 square meters (98 square feet). The houses are small, but they have everything you need. On the first floor, there is a kitchen, a living area, and a bathroom. On the second floor is a bedroom. It is big enough for two people. The houses are also inexpensive. Most are $15,000.1. Container Housing集装箱房屋2. It’s a three-bedroom house in a suburb in the United States. It’s a nice area, but there is a problem with this house: it uses a lot of energy. But this isn’t surprising. Houses and buildings use forty percent of all the energy in the United States. And many homes waste a lot of energy.Amory Lovins teaches people to save energy in their homes.Today, he is visiting the Cohen’s house. Lovins walks around the house, and he finds different problems. There’s a problem with the heater in one room, and the freezer in the kitchen. Lovins:“Oh, what have we here...?”Narrator:We don’t have to use a lot of electricity in our homes, says Lovins. There are simple ways to save energy. It’s surprising; homes waste a lot of energy, even while you sleep. To save energy in your home, unplug electronics when you’re not using them.Lovins:“Do you see that little red light down in the corner?”Narrator:Now, the TV is off, but it’s still using energy because it’s plugged in. The Cohens pay sixty dollars every year for this extra energy. The Cohen family has lots of electronics. They’re all plugged in. So they’re always using energy.Lovins lives in Aspen, Colorado, in the mountains. His house is very eco-friendly. All of the home’s electricity comes from solar panels. Some days, it’s below -40 degrees Celsius here. But Lovins’ house is warm, thanks to the solar panels. In fact, Lovins’whole house uses very little energy—only 120 watts. George:Ann,I am afraid I’m going to fail my English exam again. Ann: Why are you so pessimistic George?
George:Because listening is always my weakness. I’m just not good at it.
Ann: Is that the only reason? It may due to your lack of practice. George:You are probably right.
Ann: Don’t worry about it, for practice makes perfect. I’ll share with you some listening materials. They might be helpful in preparing for the exam. I believe you can pass the exam if you practice a lot. George:Oh, thank you. That’s very nice of you.

Ben: Hi, Ann. Have you heard the Top 10 Songs of this week?
Ann: Yes.
Ben: Which do you like most?
Ann: No. four.
Ben: You mean “S weetheart”?
Ann: Yes. I think it’s more beautiful than the others because of Mariah Carey’s marvelous voice.
Ben: What do you think of “Cold Wind”?
Ann: I like it as well. But I don’t like the song “Y our Lips” at all.
Ben: Why is that?
Ann: I don’t know the exact reason, maybe because the rhythm is too slow. It puts me to sleep.
Ben: That’s why I love it.
Ann: Really?
Ben: Yes, thanks to its slow rhythm I can fall asleep quickly.

I was sitting on the beach on a hot summer’s day, watching two children, a boy and a girl, playing with the sand. They were working hard at building a sandcastle. When they finished, a big wave came along and knocked it down.
I thought the children would cry after all their hard work had turned to nothing. But they surprised me. Hand in Hand, they got up and run away from the water’s edge, then sat down to build another one.
They really taught me a lesson. If things go wrong, we shouldn’t sit around and feel sorry for ourselves. With the help from our friend, we can always start again.。
