Vast parts of Earth should be left wild

To avoid mass extinctions of plants and animals, governments should protect a third of the oceans and land by 2030 and half by 2050,with a focus on areas of high biodiversity. So say leading biologists in an editorial in the journal Science.

This isn't just about saving biodiverse areas, says Jonathan Baillie of the National Geographic Society, one of the authors. It is also about saving ourselves by protecting 1 natural systems,or ecosystems, and their benefits to us,known as ecosystem services."We are learning that the large areas that remain are important for providing services for all life. The forests, for example, are 2 for absorbing and storing carbon," says Baillie. At present, just 3.6 per cent of the planet's oceans and 14.7 per cent of land is protected by law.At the 2010 Nagoya Conference of the Convention on Biological Diversity, governments agreed to protect 10 per cent of the oceans and 17 per cent of land by 2020.

But this isn't nearly enough,says Baillie.In the editorial,he and his coauthor,Ya

﹣Ping Zhang of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, want governments to set much bigger 3 at the next major conference on biodiversity in 2020.

"We have to enormously 4 our ambition if we want to avoid an extinction crisis and if we want to maintain the ecosystem services that we 5 benefit from," says Baillie."The trends are in a 6 direction,it's just we have to move much faster."

It is hard to work out how much space is needed to preserve biodiversity and ecosystem

7 ,the pair say, because there is so much we don't know about life on Earth ﹣like how many species there are.

8 ,most estimates suggest that between 25 and 75 percent of high biodiversity regions or major ecosystems should be protected. Therefore,we,including governments, should be 9 when setting goals and strategies.

"There is no doubt that we need far more land and sea 10 for conserving and retaining nature,"says James Watson at the University of Queensland in Australia."Targets like 50 per cent are in the right ball park when it comes to the minimal 11 of area needed to

conserve biodiversity."

But Watson and others stress that which areas get protected is even more important than the overall percentage."The key thing is to protect the right areas," says Jose Montoya of the Station for Theoretical and Experimental Ecology in Moulis,France."If we 12 protect a proportion of the territory, governments will likely protect what's easy, and that's usually areas of 13 biodiversity and ecosystem service provision."

In fact,a third of the 3.6 percent of land that is already meant to be protected is actually being 14 ,Watson's team reported last month. So only 15 areas to be protected isn't enough.

In Germany,it's normal to wear your own clothes at school, since there are no rules about uniform. So why did a few schoolmates and I spend two days 16 around the school in uniform? In fact, during these two days,a rather 17 event took place:our MUN (Model United Nations)Conference.

It is a conference 18 for students from all German schools who want to see how the

United Nations really works. They get an opportunity to 19 a country, maybe one they don't know much about, and 20 debate with other students from different 21 on real problems the world is facing now.The aim is to write a 22 at the end, which will help deal with them.

The 23 of our conference was "Transcend Borders:Discover Peace",which 24 that the students would be looking at what caused 25 among countries and how to overcome it."Transcend" is just a longer 26 for "cross".

Not only was the conference a 30 of thinking about difficult global problems, but also everyone had to speak in English while using correct debating language too.31 job! But of course this was a brilliant 32 for everyone there, and after a while, you couldn't even 33 the students weren't speaking in their first language!

While high school does not generally encourage students to explore new aspects of life, college sets the stage for that exploration.I myself went through this 56 process and found something that has changed my 57 at college for the better:I discovered ASL-American Sign Language (美式手语).

I never felt an urge to 58 any sign language before. My entire family is hearing, and so are all my friends. The 59 languages were enough in all my interactions (交往).Little did I know that I would discover my 60 for ASL.

The 61 began during my first week at college.I watched as the ASL Club 62 their translation of a song. Both the hand movements and the very 63 of communicating without speaking 64 me.What I saw was completely unlike anything I had experienced in the 65 .This newness just left me 66 more.

After that, feeling the need to 67 further, I decided to drop in on one of ASL club's meetings.I only learned how to 68 the alphabet that day.Yet instead of being discouraged by my 69 progress, I was excited.I then made it a point to 70 those meetings and learn all I could.

The following term, I 71 an ASL class. The professor was deaf and any talking was 72 .I soon realized that the silence was not unpleasant. 73 ,if there had been any talking, it would have 74 us to learn less. Now, I appreciate the silence and the 75 way of communication it opens.

“Mum,you’re always on the computer!”Laure complained.

“No,I'm not.”I76 .

“Every day I come home from school you’re working on the computer.”

“Well,at least I'm here 77 you!”

My daughter was right.Day after day,in my home office,I would stare into space as my 78 typed out the thoughts of a speaker or research completed for an article. It seemed that my work as a writer and speaker 79 my fingers to the keyboard and my mind to valuable ideas. What Laure did not 80 was that during her day away,I'd also be doing a lot of housework. It was only around three in the afternoon that I'd 81 seat myself at my desk for a few 82 moments of deep thought. Then she’d come in from schoo1.

I was 83 of myself on being available to my children. After all,I am a speaker on child behavior and parenting. But Laure’s observation84 my heart. In her eyes,I must have been a mom who was 85 but unapproachable.I wouldn’t make such an image(形象)before her.My relationship with my children is more 86 than any other work.

Many language learners think their pronunciation is good enough because their teacher doesn't correct them too often or because other students can 96 them.

Pronunciation is the area which is 97 the least attention to in language learning. Most teachers 98 just let their students speak and stop them 99 they say something completely wrong. Working on each student's pronunciation in class is just 100 . Also, the students who are 101 at pronunciation may be afraid that it will embarrass their classmates if they help 102 their mistakes.

If you believe your pronunciation is good enough to 103 because it is good enough for your teacher and other students, you may be 104 when you actually go to a foreign country. One of my friends was the best student in his 105 class in Poland. When he went to America, he found Americans didn't understand 106 of what he said.

Your pronunciation may still be quite 107 that of a native speaker. If this is the 108 ,other people will find it 109 to understand what you're saying and will not be comfortable with you.

110 ,don't think you can communicate in a foreign language 111 you've tested your skills on real native speakers. 112 for native or near-native pronunciation so that

people you talk to can communicate with you 113 . In order to achieve this goal, there's 114 that you will need to start thinking about pronunciation and 115 time on it.

The day I received my letter of acceptance to New York University, I was extremely excited. It was my dream university, and my 116 were pleased for me. But they also hadn’t 117 me to get into such a competitive school. In fact, the best thing they ever did for me was to 118 me from doing things 119 —indeed, when I was in elementary school, they offered to buy me a present 120 I got a C.

It 121 when I was in third grade. An only child in an Asian family, I had just

122 with my family from Taiwan to Los Angeles. Months into third grade, I developed a strong

feeling of 123 about getting bad grades. Seeing my anxiety, Dad said, “Kate, tell you what. If you get a C or 124 , I’ll buy you a present. If you score higher than that, I won’t buy you anything, because you won’t 125 it.”

Clearly my dad wasn’t the 126 Asian tiger parent, pressuring me to work tirelessly for the best 127 , and neither was my mom. They didn’t want to push me. They wanted m e to be 128 and healthy. Dad’s 129 of a “failing grade” gift amazingly 130 my worries and pressure. What’s more,I 131 getting A’s and B’s throughout high school, but without the added stress and fear of failing. I think it was my pa rents’ lack of stress on grades that gave me 132 to encourage my own desire for achievements.

I now realize I was 133 when I thought I didn’t receive a present from my dad that day. He gave me two invaluable 134 : the space to develop my own desire for excellence, and the healthy mind to 135 it.

Much meaning can be carried clearly, with our eyes, so it is often 136 that eyes can speak.

Do you have such kind of 137 ? In a bus you may look at a stranger, but not too long. And if he 138 that he is being looked at, he may feel uncomfortable. The same in daily life. If you are looked at for more than necessary, you will look at yourself up and down, to see if there is 139 wrong with you. If nothing goes wrong, you will feel 140 toward the person who is looking at you that way. Eyes do speak, right?

Looking too long at someone may seem to be impolite. But sometimes things are different. If a man looks at a woman for more than 10 seconds ,it may mean that he wishes to attract(吸引)her attention, to make her understand that he 141 her. When two people are in a conversation, the speaker will only look at the listener from time to time, 142 make sure that the listener does pay attention 143 what he or she is speaking. Lovers will enjoy looking at each other or being looked at for a long time, to show something that 144 cannot express.

Clearly, eye contact should be done according to the relationship between two people and the place 145 you stay.

I lived closely related to the weather. It is surprising how you 146 it when you

live in it. Not a cloud passed 147 , not a wind blew untested. When the winds changed and the air 148 like snow, I would stay in my tree, because I had gotten lost in a 149 one afternoon. That day the storm was so 150 that I could not push against that.

However, that 151 me to stay home when the air said “snow.” Not that I was afraid of being 152 far from home in a storm, 153 I could find food and shelter and make a fire anywhere, 154 I had become as 155 my tree house as a hatching (孵蛋的)bird to her nest. Caught out in the storms and weather, I had an urgent 156 to return to my tree house, even as the deer to their bushes: We all had our little 157 in the wilderness. We all fought to 158 there.

When you don't have a newspaper or radio to give you the 159 forecast, watch the birds and animals. They can 160 when a storm is coming. When the nuthatch (五子雀)holed up, I 161 up, lit my light, and sat by my fire learning new tunes on my reed whistle. I was now really into the 162 of winter, and quite attracted by its 163 . There is no such thing as a 164 winter night. (完整版)高中英语人教版必修一课文内容电子版Unit2

Unit 2 English around the world The road to modern English At the end of the 16th century, about five to seven million people spoke English. Nearly all of them lived in England. Later in the next century, people from England made voyages to conquer other parts of the world and because of that, English began to be spoken in many other countries. Today, more people speak English as their first, second or foreign language than ever before. Native English speakers can understand each other even if they don’t speak the same kind of English. Look at this example: British Betty: Would you like to see my flat? American Amy: Yes. I’d like to come up to your apartment. So why has English changed over time? Actually, all languages change and develop when cultures meet and communicate with each other. At first, the English spoken in England between about AD 450 and 1150 was very different from the English spoken today. It was based more on German than the English we speak at present. Then gradually between about AD 800 and 1150, English became less like German because those who ruled England spoke first Danish and later French. These new settlers enriched the English language and especially its vocabulary. So by the 1600’s Shakespeare was able to make use of a wider vocabulary than ever before. In 1620 some British settlers moved to America. Later in the 18th century some British people were taken to Australia too. English began to be spoken in both countries. Finally by the 19th century the language was settled. At that time two big changes in English spelling happened: first Samuel Johnson wrote his dictionary and later Noah Webster wrote The America Dictionary of the English Language. The latter gave a separate identity to American English spelling. English now is also spoken as a foreign or second language in South Asia. For example, India has a very large number of fluent English speakers because Britain ruled India from 1765 to 1947. During that time English became the language for government and education. English is also spoken in Singapore and Malaysia and countries in Africa such as South Africa. Today the number of people learning English in China is increasing rapidly. In fact, China may have the largest number of English learners. Will Chinese English develop its own identity? Only time will tell. STANDARD ENGLISH AND DIALECTS What is standard English? Is it spoken in Britain, the US, Canada, Australia, India and New Zealand? Believe it or not, there is no such thing as standard English. This is because in the early days of radio, those who reported the news were expected to speak excellent English. However, on TV and the radio you will hear differences in the way people speak. When people use words and expressions different from “standard language”, it is called a dialect. American English has many dialects, especially the midwestern, southern, African American and Spanish dialects. Even in some parts of the USA, two people from neighboring towns speak a little differently. American English has so many dialects because people have come from all over the world. Geography also plays a part in making dialects. Some people who live in the mountains of the eastern USA speak with an older kind of English dialect. When Americans moved from one place to another, they took their dialects with them. So people from the mountains in the southeastern USA speak with almost the same dialect as people in the northwestern USA. The USA is a large country in which many different dialects are spoken. Although many Americans move a lot, they still recognize and understand each other’s dialects.
