What We Can Not Afford To Lose—SerenityDear judges and friends, good evening. My name is Long Chen. My major is Business Administration and I`m s senior student. Today, I`m honoured to give my speech. My topic is What We Can Not Afford To Lose.Through our lives, we can not afford to lose a lot of things, such as, the trust of others, the health of our bodies, and so on. And if you want to know my answers to this question, serenity leaps to my mind first. We always say serenity in Chinese, that is dan ding. Right?There is a saying in Bible: God, please give me the serenity to accept things I can not change. Please give me the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. I appreciate the saying very much .If we live with serenity, that means, we won’t feel pleased by external gains, and won’t feel sad by personal losses. There, with the serenity in the heart, our life will be harmonious and joyful.I think my life is fully involved with serenity. Now, I will share my own experience with you.The first story happened in 2009. The result of my college entrance exam was bad. It was an ebb period in my life. At that time, I felt very upset and dejected. I lost my life compass. I didn’t know where I should g o. Even I didn’t want to enter university. But my Dad helps me out and taught me a lesson “No matter what may happen, you should face everything with courage and serenity”. Then, I regained my self-confidence. I should learn to grow up. This experience teaches me that the serenity will help you to face difficulty bravely.The second story happened in the campus. In the past year, people often told me”Your major is Business administration. Maybe your major sounds great, but it is too difficult to find job in your future”. At that time, I doubted whether my choice is right or not. I felt confusing and I didn’t know what to do. Then, I hear the voice from my heart “Your major is your choice, you should trust yourself”. So, I never waste my life in college. I always try to do different things and try to learn different knowledge. Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen.There is an old saying in China, a man with moral integrity will not accept food given in charity. It is about an story in ancient times when the wars brought everything in chaos and numerous people in starvation. A rich man wanted to help the poor, so he shared food with them. And even when I was stepping upstairs, I was making judgments unconsciously on which foot to set first. However, once an individual ceases to make judgments independently, he actually ceases to live as a conscious human, but maybe as a machine that’s waiting for orders, but maybe as a clueless consumer that buys whatever TV commercials tell them to, but maybe as a radical patriot that believes whatever those politicians preach, but maybe as a puppet that moves as the controller wishes.Worse still, losing our independent judgment not only harms our individual well-being, but may also damage the society as a whole. History may give us a glimpse of how terrible it could be. During World War II, countless German citizens surrendered their independent judgment to the Nazis, allowing Gestapo to gun down unarmed civilians, leaving millions of Jewish men, women and even babies to be executed one by one in the gas chambers of the death camps, or even to be worked to death as slave laborers. It is the loss of independent judgment of the whole German society that drove the country into a dark hole in which no light of humanity could be seen.And now that our hearts are vulnerable, and our judgments waver from time to time, however, ladies and gentlemen, please keep in mind that sticking to our independent judgment is actually what preserves our humanity and what protects our society from being destroyed.
